Why Airplanes Are So Noisy Inside

BRIGHT SIDE

You’ve just taken your seat on board your airliner, and your palms are sweaty, your heart is racing, and you just can’t shake your anxiety. That’s okay - a ton of people are nervous flyers! You’ll probably be paying extra close attention to every sensation and sound during your flight.
For example, 10 minutes before take-off you’ll hear a soft pound from under the plane, and a drill-like sound. This is just the crew closing and securing the cargo hold. Creaks, rattles, and whooshes are also all completely normal sounds that every airplane makes in the air. Don’t let them scare you; such a large aircraft is bound to creak, and the rattles are things moving and sliding around.

SUMMARY:
- About 20 minutes before you take off, you’ll hear two high-pitched dings in a row over the intercom system. This only means that one crew member wants to talk to another, just to get into preparation mode for the flight.
- 15 minutes before your plane takes off, you’ll hear a single ding. This is a call from the cockpit to the flight attendants to pick up the phone.
- 10 minutes before take-off: you’ll hear a soft pound from under the plane, and a drill-like sound. This is just the crew closing and securing the cargo hold.
- Love it or hate it, there’s nothing quite like feeling your plane leave the ground! You’ll hear the sound of the plane’s wheels going back up into its belly.
- 5 minutes after take-off two loud beeps will go off. This is the pilot telling the flight attendants that the plane has reached a certain altitude.
- If there’s a lot of turbulence, the pilot may send a ding over the intercom system, warning flight attendants that it might get a little bumpy.
- When the plane has reached a certain cruising altitude and you’ve been flying for a while, it’s safe to take your seatbelt off and move around!
- Just like there were two dings when you reached a certain height after take-off, the two dings will ring again when you’ve reached that same level on your descent.
- A bump and deep thunk 2 minutes before landing mean the airplane’s landing gear is coming out, which includes the wheels and anything else in the plane’s undercarriage that helps it land.
- The wheels will touch down on the runway, and you may feel and hear some bumps or thuds.
- Bumps during a landing are totally normal, even expected. You’ll cruise along the runway for a while, so that you can slow down.

A lot of this is inaccurate, procedure is different for each airline. The “dings” are not for passengers at any point and you missed the fact that a single ding is likely a passenger call, use the overhead lights; rear, mid, front to determine where call is from, tripple ding is not from flight deck and does not indicate turbulence. I appreciate the effort but please research in more detail.

@T TwinerSingle ding 15 prior to push? It varies by carrier but most cockpit to cabin calls are a double ding, which on most (not all) airliners, results in 4 individual chimes. But when you’re at the gate? You don’t need to call the cabin crew to leave the flight deck. You just get up and walk back. Until you’re securing the flight deck for pushback, the pilots don’t have to call the cabin to “let them know” 10 minutes prior to push: Lots of narrowbody airliners like 737’s don’t even have powered cargo doors, the “drill like” sound is usually the B System hydraulics being switched on. Since the nose wheel steering is powered by the A hydraulic system, a lot of carriers (again, not all) switch the A pumps off and the B pumps on at the gate prior to pushback, so that the nose wheel steering is unpressurized for the tug crew. (Some carriers just use a bypass pin, some do both) The engines “revving up”? Not at the gate, unless the APU is inoperative(MEL’d) At least the cartoon was accurate and showed the airplane pushed back before they “revved up” (Silly verbiage) Pro tip for ears? No “Pros” use gum or yawning, they use a Valsalva to open the eustachian tubes and equalize pressure. (Google it) 5 minutes after takeoff: The plane has reached a “Certain altitude” Specifically, 10,000MSL. The real reason for that being an issue is you’re now out of sterile cockpit, which changes the communication priorities. Same thing during the descent passing 10,000. The cartoon shows 31,000 feet. Not even close to accurate. Intercom dings for warning the FA’s about turbulence? No, you call them and actually speak to them. How long until it gets bumpy. The expected severity and duration of the bumps, how long they’ll have to finish service before landing. None of that is conveyed by chimes. The chimes are to get them to pick up the intercom. Video makes no mention of where the worst turbulence is typically encountered? On the polar side of the Jetstream or downwind of a positive vortmax? “Sending a beep over the intercom and turning the seatbelt sign off” The seatbelt sign chimes when you move it, there is no separate “beep”

My favourite sound to hear on board a plane is that humming sound when you first board the plane. This is coming from the plane’s auxiliary power unit, or APU, which is a generator near the plane’s tail that provides power before the pilot starts up the engines. The APU also helps the engines start up by providing an electric jolt

One aspect you did not mention is the kind of " hicup feeling the plane does? What is it?'
@m1x1s81
@m1x1s81 5 лет назад
While taking off, you might feel that hickup Feeling. Thats Because of the G-force, which means that beacause of gravity, it's pushing you down in your. The reason because og that feeling is because prushes your organs down.

@@jejewa2763 the reason for the enginge changing Noice is because planes have a takeoff speed it can either be high or low. While the plane is climbing it either reduces or increases it's speed, thats the cause og the sound Change

Turbulence isn’t actually irregular air waves,they’re more like invisible runways and you’re pilots are going full Ryan Air mode

Well, now thare are some sounds from the cabin that you definitelly dont wanna hear. Like "GEAR NOT SAFE" on the landing or "OBSTACLE AHEAD" or "ENGINE FAULT", but the worst is probabpy "STALL STALL" or "SINKRATE", "BANGANGLE". But dont worry, with experienced pilots you wont hear that lol

Hey Bright Side: What about flaps during takeoff? If you don't use them you might crash&die. You also totally forgot the sounds of the apu, GPU being disconected and generators during taxi of the a320 a300 a321 a330 a350 a40 a380 etc.

This video is problematic on so many levels. There is no mention of the engines starting on the ground. The flaps have to be extended before take off, that makes noise. The flaps are only mentioned before landing and before landing the flaps are extended not stowed. After take off the nose wheel hits a plate as it has no brakes, that makes a distinctive noise. Ahhhhh I could go on and on and on. Would be better if they skipped the attempts at humor and focused on what really happens. Did they even research for this video.

This was made by someone who hasn't been on a single plane in their life. Their focus is on the dings when they are the least frequent audible and least frightening noises made during flight. Talk about what you know and know what you're talking about.

It's the airports that scare me. I relax once I board. I like all the sounds but my favorite sound is the engines spooling up.

This video is just full of beeps and dings which dont need to be explained as signs light up when they happen, and completely missed the startup sounds the engines make before takeoff or the wheels coming out before landing
