Thanks for watching, and please consider supporting here! tiltify.com/@anotherroof/maths-marathon-2023 Also, this isn't a new set, it's just my flat. I'm also working hard on MOG Part 2 as you can see from my scribblings in the background!

I'm of the observation that undiagnosed Tism causes a lot of social issues for many people. Don't worry, I have know many that discovered it in adulthood, and they are doing much better.

I was diagnosed with schizophrenia about a year ago or so now. I can recall feeling terrified about telling people, due to the stigmas, and that everyone I knew used "schizo" as a joke. Granted, it can be kinda funny, but it meant I also wasn't able to express that I was actually schizophrenic due to all the stereotypes surrounding it. I remember once, one of my college mates was trying to explain schizophrenia to one of their friends, and he said "it's basically Ted Bundy syndrome" :(

Heart breaking. The bike ride I did for Rethink was primarily centred around dispelling stigma. We've come a long way, but still have a long way to go. What I will say is that being open and educating people about what your experience is actually like is the best way to destigmatise the condition. But on the other hand, it isn't your responsibility to do that and you shouldn't come out if you don't want to have to deal with all that. Thanks so much for watching and sharing your experience though and I wish you well 🙂

I've been diagnosed with ADHD and high functioning Autism (I recall another term might be preferred but I can't recall nor find it) around 3 years ago when I was 30ish and it was very liberating for me. There was a lot of self-loathing stemming from trying and failing to be "normal" and failing at it, not understanding certain things. Being able to switch from "You can't do this because you're stupid/lazy/broken" to "You can't do this because that's how you are" has been really helpful in finding new and functioning tools to cope with challenges of everyday life. You know, you made me realize that I am also quite lucky in that my extremely tiny circle of friends is very understanding of my, erm, circumstance. Or at least they're trying - it's perhaps easier for them because even before my diagnosis I was pretty good at masking and dealing with a lot of the more annoying functions of my brain, and since then I only got better at it. The upside for me is that I always knew something might be wrong with me and I understood that being able to give it a name would be helpful. The downside is I wanted to get ADHD diagnosis for two years before I got it, but ADHD in adults in my country is still a fairly new topic. Still, it was funny seeking ADHD diagnosis and be told "yep, you have autism".. I think technically my diagnosis is for Asperger's syndrome but that's because we're still using older medical classification. All that to say, it's good for content creators to cover difficult or taboo topics. I guess as someone on the spectrum I don't really believe in taboos anyway ;).

yeah, my adhd is a real bastard. my dad has anxiety and used to be depressed but he's a lot better now because he got a less crappy job. thanks for opening up! the more ppl talk about it the more ppl will realize that having a mental problem is no different from having a digestive problem or a heart condition or something. it's normal. also, your videos are really interesting and cool, thanks for making them!

Appreciate you speaking out about mental health, looking forward to the marathon & will be there as long as I can! Likewise long-term depression & adult adhd here, studying and practicing stoicism & cbt has done wonders over the last decade. Wish everyone the best!

I've been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome since early childhood and actually think it is slight misdiagnosis and I'm actually more on the Autism spectrum due to my heightened (almost unhealthy) capacity of empathy. Face general anxiety and depression disorder today and am confused or have been victim of prank culture in workplace plus I had an unfortunate falling out with my therapist. (I am still very grateful to anonymous person for all they have helped me so far) Your marathon inspired me and so I have donated. Cheers - another fellow math content creator on the spectrum.

I am 42. Diagnosed with depression 6 years ago and taking medication (Sertraline). Also, some people said that I behave like an autistic person, and this was prior to my diagnosis of depression. Other people have told me that I have Asperger's. I do not know and think they all are wrong. But at the same time I refused that I might suffer from depression a couple of years ago. I do not know and honestly do not want to know. Ignorance is bliss.
@AnotherRoof
@AnotherRoof 11 месяцев назад
So, a couple of things: "Asperger's" isn't really a term that's used anymore. It all falls under the heading "autism spectrum disorder". You know yourself better than anyone but if people are pointing it out, it might be worth considering. That's how it started for me. For the longest time, I thought: "So what if I'm autistic? What difference does it make?" A lot, as it turned out, and it's one of the best things that could have happened to me. All of sudden, so many of my behaviours and tendencies had context. Employers can make reasonable adjustments etc. I'm not saying that you should persue a diagnosis, just that knowing isn't always bad. I wish you well, and thanks for watching 🙂

@@AnotherRoof Thank you. Honestly, nothing would change for me, at least from my point of view. I am too old, lazy and found a way to get by. Nothing would change in any way. Maybe if it was 15 years ago, it would have made sense, but today? Nope. Best wishes to you, thanks for your work on this channel. Might give you at least some compensation for the years when you were bullied. Have been bullied myself, so I know how it is.

@@jonathonjubb6626I advise against self-diagnosis. There are other syndromes with similar features, and the treatment isn't always the same. Having a starting point to recognize that something is there can be valuable, but I would recommend getting a professional opinion.

I unfortunately have a very similar experience to you, I have been diagnosed much earlier than you fortunately. Maths was a huge influence for me and helped me through some really dark times. Somehow maths has one of the most accepting and amazing communities and I'm eternally grateful

I have been suffering from social anxiety and stuttering for a long time, and in the fall of 2020 I also developed depression, which appeared simultaneously with tinnitus and chronic pain. The first symptom of depression was a lack of pleasure in mathematics (anhedonia). In high school I was "obsessed" with mathematics, full of energy I stepped forward, but I burned out much sooner than I should have. My depression also had significant cognitive-deficit symptoms, which made learning math impossible. That symptom (anhedonia and apathy) still prevails today, although medication helps. SSRIs dampened both positive and negative emotions, but after half a year the deepening of depression began and I had no strength to get out of bed. I ditched them and now take Pregabalin for pain and Wellbutrin for anhedonia and they definitely have my recommendation. My road to recovery is not over yet, there is a lot of room for improvement and I am sure that progress will eventually come. Cheers! ❤

Truly wonderful and open video, thank you. My wife has ASD and I have Asperger’s and we are in our 50s and only recently self diagnosed. We are both teachers too. It was never something to discuss in the 80s. It was wonderful to hear you speaking openly about this, and we both LOVE your maths videos, bravo ! ❤️😎👍

i have adhd, shizotypal pd and hEDS having adhd can make some things tricky and i dont normally act normal either, my memory is also rather poor but hyperfixating on my work can make me learn much faster being schizotypal makes me subconciously believe in weird magical ideas, also known as an excess of lateral thinking, as well as making it much harder to have a need to socialise or act correctly when socialising and hEDS (Ehlers Danlos) is just the hypermobile variant of a group of degenerative connective tissue disorders and causes all sorts of shenanigans across my physical health

In the future it's worth pointing out where the charity you're advocating for is based in. As I suspected from your accent and I did look it up - Mind is based in the UK. I don't have anything against helping UK but I live in Poland and mental health awareness is basically non existent here and we also need a lot of support.

I had untreated major depression for years. SSRI’s/sleep aids helped turned my life around. I also think people rely heavily on medication they don’t need.

do you find it hard to do math the formal way, writing it down, like a professor wants you to, instead of your own style, because you're afraid, that using an external method could lead you to accepting the potential flaws and limitations of it, instead of creativley being able to solve any problem in theory, while staying with your own methodology?
