*WHY AM I EMOTIONAL?!* Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) Reaction/ commentary: FIRST TIME WATCHING 

The original ending had them getting back together. Robin Williams, Sally Field, and Chris Columbus, all of whom had been divorced before, asked to change it, not wanting to give kids with divorced parents false hope the same would happen for them.

This is a movie where no one person is at fault. He lacked responsibility, he wanted to be the fun parent and be liked. They didnt agree to him being a stay at home dad so she was working a hard job and then coming home and parenting not only the kids but her husband. He also didnt have a stable job and while he was standing up for soemthing, he quit his job out of nowhere just expecting her to pick up the slack and pay the bills. He also, obviously, didnt do much around the house as we see him learn the household basics during this film. He learned through being Mrs Doubtfire how to be the responsible parent and you saw the impact on the family; Miranda was happier, the balance was better and the kids excelled in school. He also gained a sense of acomplisment and confidence that then fed into his work situation. She is also at fault, though, as she kept the hurt and resentment she felt to herself for years, and while she says that he didnt want to talk about anything serious, it got to the point where they imploded and she undoubtedly found solace in her work. You can tell how incredibly unhappy she was at the beginning of the film and that kind of unhappiness over the years with no resolution leads to bitterness and resentment which affects those around you. Miranda and Daniel are very similar to my parents, who are no longer together and didn't have the resolution that Miranda and Daniel were able to come to in this movie. I was always grateful that I saw this film when i was younger, though, as it helped me to understand their relationship and personalities better.

One of the things that I liked about this movie was they didn’t make Pierce Brosnan’s character an asshole. So many movies would have the stepfather be a cheater or hate the kids or be despicable in some way and Stu is mostly a well meaning nice guy.

I feel like everyone looks at Daniel as the good guy here, because it's Robin Williams, but realistically, they both contributed to this happening. His only focus was on being the fun, liked parent, which left Miranda to do practically EVERYTHING else. Make sure the kids keep up with schoolwork, housework, cooking, keeping up on bills when Daniel quit or got fired from another job, etc. This went on for YEARS. He needed to grow up and be a responsible parent, and as tough of a situation as this was, it caused him to do just that. People are too hard on Miranda

The scene when Daniel is serving the tea to Mrs. Sellner, the icing melting off his face was not intentional. The lights on set were causing the icing to melt, and Robin Williams just rolled with it. He was so brilliant

In defense of Miranda. Always playing the bad cop is tough. While yes he quit on principle bills need to be paid. As far as custody is concerned he was not employed he did not have a place to live

I always feel everyone gives the mom too hard a time in the beginning. It's implied he's always between jobs or getting fired, forcing her to work extra to make up for it and leaving her no choice. Then he always does something fun and outrageous like this party, but she then has to clean up the mess. I'd be livid and over it too. He's clearly a great and amazing father, with a good heart, but isn't taking life too seriously outside of that. Either way, they are just completely different people and toxic for each other. Sometimes it is best to separate.

Being the cool dad isn't the best thing, even if the kids think it's awesome. With no boundaries and discipline, just a free for all. Fun is good, but it can't be the only thing. And of course as shown, the other parent has to then pick up the extra slack and seems to the kids like an evil parent. And of course the character even realizes that when becoming Mrs. Doubtfire and being regimented.

One of my favorite Robin Williams movies of my life!

The talented and quick-thinking brother was played by actor, playwright and screenwriter Harvey Fierstein. He was also the voice of Yao in Mulan and Mulan II. Harvey has won Tony Awards for some of the most iconic shows in theater such as Hairspray, La Cage aux Folles, Kinky Boots, Newsies, and his own Torch Song Trilogy, which also became a movie.

I have to pop onto the comments and defend Miranda as well. I think it’s quite a realistic reason for break up, sure we see a man who obviously likes to have fun and do fun things with his kids but you can also see that she takes the brunt of the household care taking, cooking dinners, cleaning etc etc while also being the main source of income for the family. You can tell by the look on her face when she walks in from work that it’s probably the first time in a decade she’s ever had a meal cooked for her when she got home. Edited to add after finishing the review: You have to understand that what I said above is emotional neglect, I can definitely understand her resentment towards Daniel because frankly instead of taking any responsibility for his actions he just trash talked her to his kids and treated her with contempt. There’s no denying he’s a great dad though and the divorce court rulings were definitely unfair.

You seem very sympathetic to Daniel's character and very critical of Miranda. Have you ever been responsible for children? or a household? you can't get anything done without their respect, & parents undermining each other is the fast track to disaster. Miranda got along with "Mrs. Doubtfire" because she helped her run a functioning household. Ask yourself, if he had done those things during their marriage perhaps it would have gone differently.

Fun fact: When this movie was being made, Robin went around the streets of San Francisco dressed as Mrs. Doubtfire; one of the places he went into was a sex shop… the results were likely hilarious because at first the proprietor did not recognise it was Robin.

Saw this at the cinema when it came out - when he got up from the fridge with his face in the cake…..whole place roared with laughter! RIP Robin ❤

As the youngest of three, and a child of a broken marriage when I was a year or younger, this movie is both hysterical and awfully tear-inducing. I had a great upbringing (generally speaking...), and watched this movie often, but it tackles some heavy material.

Mara Wilson, playing the youngest kid, did such a phenomenal job for her age. Going on to play Matilda, and more recently I know her for her cameo role in Helluva Boss. What a career for someone who started so young!

This is such an enjoyable film and still still stands the test of time 30 years later. I'm sure that there had to be so much improvisation from Robin Williams. He was such a great talent and able to give a fantastic comedic performance, both physically and verbally. I remember first seeing him when Mork and Mindy aired when I was a child and absolutely loved him/his character. Such a shame that for someone that brought enormous pleasure to millions, went the way he did. Thank you as ever for your reaction, it was certainly enjoyable and heartfelt.

Rip Robin Williams- he took the soul of comedy with him when he left us. May he rest in peace and joy.

One thing that stuck with me from Adam Ruins Everything is why people hate divorce. Divorce isn’t the end of a marriage, it’s the end of a *bad* marriage. There’s an important difference. It’s when one or both partners no longer want to be together

Sally Field was Forrest Gump’s mother and was in Steel Magnolias as the mother too. She had the starring role in the movie “An Eye For An Eye” which is a movie about a mother’s revenge for her daughter’s murder. I recommend it!

Kid me saw that movie and thought the mom was such a buzz killer. Dad me sees it and think “he got a fucking donkey in the house! A donkey!!!” I just love how Pierce Brosnan’s character is such a nice guy. He’s supposed to be an antagonist but he’s respectful, caring for the children, there’s nothing to not like.

My parents didn’t officially divorce, but they were separated. The tension while they were together was bad. Once they found their space and peace, it was much better.

Please can we go down the Robin Williams rabbit hole now? Good Morning Vietnam, Aladdin, Dead Poet's Society, What Dreams May Come, Bicentennial Man, Patch Adams etc. he was brilliant in them all. But his greatest role and my favourite ever movie will always be Good Will Hunting, his Oscar-winning performance brings me to tears every time I watch it

I wish Brosnan’s character showed up at the end too. He’s the most unambiguously good character in the movie. Definitely not the “evil stepfather” vibes. He deeply care for her and loves hanging out with her kids, even tolerating the annoying nanny. I believe he doesn’t show up because the original script had the divorced couple get back together. They changed that part but didn’t add the boyfriend back in

One of the things I like about this movie is how Pierce Brosnan's character isn't a bad guy, which was refreshing.

One of my favorite Robin Williams movies that and Jumanji (there are so many tho). And one of my favorite Sally Field performances I've seen and also Steel Magnolias (she has the best scene in the movie imo). Her reaction to the reveal it was him was so great and felt genuine. There are so many scenes that were so well done like when she was talking candidly to mrs. doubtfire about her not liking the person she had become and him realizing things he never knew because he didn't normally talk about serious things before.

I think you missed some of the perspective in the beginning. Daniel was just being the cool dad without actually considering what’s best for his kids, and how it affects his wife’s relationship with them when he’s always being irresponsible and fun and then she has to come in and be the mean one. The irony is when he’s Mrs. Doubtfire, he’s doing everything Miranda wanted him to do in the first place. If he could’ve just gotten it together and been that more structured but still loving and supportive parent when Miranda asked him to over the years, they may have never even gotten divorced to begin with. He learned to be a better father through acting as Mrs. Doubtfire.

I love this movie. When I was a kid I memorized the raptor rap despite knowing very little English and I still know it by heart today at 38.

Mrs. Doubtfire is a Robin Williams classic. This movie is one of my favorite Robin Williams movies. He was such an incredibly talented actor. We lost a good one when he passed but its great being able to go back to his classics like this and laugh

They did not have any kind of thing like Uber Eats or Grubhub or DoorDash back then. You had to order from a restaurant and they charged heavy for delivery plus the tip.

Daniel pretending to be Mrs Doubtfire made him into a more wiser man and father it’s a healthy example of a father being forced to use the fake it till you make it strategy to get back his kids and ending up in a much better position.

this movie came out when i was 8 living in a house with violent parents and the subsequent divorce between them, which led to me and my brother to be raised by a TV set... so, its was very validating to me at the time, and even though it was a comedy it was the saddest drama to my kid-brain

I actually agree with Miranda more than Daniel. It's great to have a funny dad, it's not great to have a dad that is a clown. Imagine if your husband can't keep a job and is always in between jobs. You become the sole provider which is still fine, but if I am her since I am the sole provider I would expect the house to be clean and for him to get the cooking done. But she has to be the sole provider and doing cooking & cleaning. Then the kids education was falling behind, Miranda wants to discipline them but Daniel wants her to take it easy. It's like Daniel doesn't care about anything except for having fun. Being a dad is not just about having fun time with your kids. You have a lot of responsibilities to handle and the responsibilities come first before having fun. If Daniel would have step up like he did at the end, they wouldn't have been divorced at the first place. I do however agree that Miranda was being cruel by refusing to share custody with Daniel. Women who do this type of stuff are not doing it for their kids best interest. They want revenge which is horrible. Miranda managed to come to her senses and realize what she did was wrong and what matters the most is the kids future. Not many women are like her.

This is definitely a classic, it has a powerful blend of comedy and hurt. I too can relate to it on a personal level because my parents divorced when I was eight. The end message is heartfelt, sad, yet true. Thank you for giving us this reaction!

Of course it's Robin Williams and we want to sympathize with him, but the truth is that he comes across as such a devoted father because his attention was not divided among any of the exhausting day-to-day tasks of running their lives. A lot of men end up being more responsible caregivers after divorce because their spouse isn't there to manage things and they actually experience carrying the full emotional load along with conceiving, planning, and executing every little task.

"Patch Adams" is also a underrated movie with Robin.

Wait, what do you mean "what a ruling!" ? Let's put it into the judge's perspective: Talented actor gets professional make-up artists to fashion him a disguise so he can invade the home of his ex-wife, stalk his kids and her for MONTHS and drive away possible new suitors in her life, claims he did it because he is obsessed with loving his kids. I think the judge did him a favour not putting him in jail, hah. There is this video on RU-vid in which someone re-cut footage from the movie into the trailer of a horror-thriller, it's quite hilarious how well that works.

Best line in the whole movie: "My first day as a woman, and I'm getting hot flashes."

This is one of my favourite films ever for three reasons. 1. My parents are divorced too. 2. I am one of three children. 3. Mrs. Doubtfire's voice reminds me of my grandmother. God rest her soul.

This movie came out right after my parents got divorced. There were many factors, to it, but what I've always loved them for is how they were willing to be adult about it and not turn visitation into a pissing contest. This movie showed me a family, like my own, who is willing to work to be a family even when you're not a family anymore.

This is one of those childhood movies I really loved, and its meaning felt deeper when I grew up. I love it so much. It's one of my very favourites to this day. I'm so happy you reacted to it. What a fun ride this was!

This movie's character development is really something. Daniel starts off as a well-meaning butterfly who'd rather be the 'cool' dad than an actual responsible one. The party shows that, he goes behind his wife's back to undermine her parenting. There was no way this marriage would've survived. Thanks to being Mrs. Doubtfire, Daniel grows into a much more responsible father. Both their lives end up in a happier place at the end, which is the best way for their family, and I really like that the film took this route.

She played Forest Gump"s mother in Forest Gump. She did an incredible job in that one as well

In Marandas defense when Daniel is saying let’s go to therapy and she says it’s too late for that Felt like she probably suggested that he Brushed it off and wasn’t listening and then when he says we love each other don’t wait and the camera looks at her I don’t think people get it but she has finally realized she does not love him anymore and if you don’t have love in your marriage, and you are not happy then why are you saying you can’t stay together for the kids that’s not a good thing. Also living in San Francisco in the 1990s that house was have been about $800,000-$900,000 so she would’ve had to climb the corporate ladder in order for them to survive in that city. That’s what she means she didn’t have a choice she had to go to work she had to be the breadwinner I feel like she probably put her dreams aside to make sure the family was taken care of, this is one of those movies that we watched as a kid you hate her character so much but when you watch it as an adult with children of your own, you get her better!

This movie marked my childhood. It aired all the time and it was one of my favorites. It is a comedy ofc but it has so much heart in the story and besides the fact the character managed to be in disguise like that for a long time, it is very relatable and you can understand all the characters pov in this situation. Robin did an excellent job and Sally did as well bringing so many emotions to those characters :)

It is the BEST movie. RIP Robin - you give us all so many emotions & so much joy, & will continue forever. What a legacy.

"Who looks for justice in a courtroom?". That was poorly stated, Thor.....oftentimes justice can only be found in a courtroom IRL. Otherwise another good reaction - but that was uncalled for IMO.

He was a fun dad but a bad father. There’s something to be said for love being an action and a daily choice, not a feeling, as well as working it out because you made a lifetime commitment, but he was definitely not the “hero” and her the “villain” They were not good together.

As for other movies to watch -- I always recommend Buffyverse reactors watch Bring it On and Can't Hardly Wait, they're hilarious and have a lot of Buffyverse actors in them!

Helllooooo, Every broken family childhood movie, I have such a hard time watching his movies now, that as a kids brought me laughter and helped me remember to laugh in world full of hate, and he couldn't make himself smile and relieze how a country loved him, and have missed him. Every life is a ripple in the lives of those around you. I wish my father mad this kind of effort, but he did it in his own way just always felt like a 5th wheel.

As a child with divorced parents, this movie reached out to me so much growing up. But now I find myself crying knowing such an incredible star was lost too soon. I miss seeing Robin Williams so very much. This will always be my favorite movie of his and will always remain an important part in my life. 💕

One of my favorite movies of all time. It's fucking hilarious and incredibly moving. Robin Williams is astounding. And the rest of the cast is perfect as well.

Also the fight at the end is Miranda just trying to end their feud and do the right thing for their kids. They actually cut it from the movie but there is a deleted scene that takes places after the restraunt where Daniel comes over and they really have it out while the kids sit upstairs listening just crushed. She doesn't want to start something like that again and it shows they just don't work, barely in the same room for 30 seconds and they are already at each other

You should see Robin Williams in One Hour Photo. One of his great thrillers. Also, u should see Sally Field in Soap Dish. An all star cast of Elizabeth Shue, Kevin Kline, Robert Downey Jr. And Whoopi Goldberg. She was also in a crime movie called Eye For An Eye with Kiefer Sutherland and Ed Harris.

Just have to clarify when you said "What, $300 a week? That's only $1,200 a month, no wonder he can't afford a nice place!" You have to keep in mind money changes over time, you need to account for inflation. $1,00 a month in 1993 is equivalent to about $2,500 a month in todays money! Considering he not only was working as Mrs. Doubtfire but also had the main job at the film place, he was definitely making enough money to afford a perfectly fine place to live, especially considering the average rent in San Fransisco back in 1993 for a 2 bedroom apartment was anywhere from $1,000-1,300/month. He had that covered just by being Mrs. Doubtfire, and surely he was making at least an equal amount at the other job as well I think he would easily manage it, and he did, as you saw once the film continued. I've got to ask, just WHAT was your dog eating at 17:02?? LOL Pup is too cute!

11:00 - maybe if he put more effort in keeping a job and being a father (instead of a friend) to his children, he wouldn't need to crossdress to see them. Daniel maybe a great father, but a sucky husband. He just allowed his wife to take care of all the bills, of the house, the kids and then blamed her for working too hard! He was basically a child number 4 when she needed a husband.

Ah, coolies! I still use this account to watch some old saved videos and this reaction came up randomly on my feed. I’ve been really “good” so far but I just HAD to watch this! This is my favourite Robin Williams film because it combines comedy and drama so well. Now I totally get that you’re siding with Daniel more because that’s how I felt when I first watched it, but that heart to heart scene between Miranda & Mrs. Doubtfire changed everything for me when I rewatched this as an adult. You see how Miranda felt unsupported by Daniel (how she felt she had to be the “bad cop”), and I love that the film did that because you could see the attempt to not take sides (even though Robin Williams is more loveable). I love the irony that by deceiving/ being someone he wasn’t, Daniel was able to be truly honest/vulnerable and that translated over to Miranda as well. The film also handles the theme of divorce exceptionally well, like how it affects everyone involved and the “realistic” ending as you mentioned. Although, while I do appreciate that ending because it’s relatable for many people, I’ll admit I’m slightly conflicted cause I do have a fixed view on what love is (changeless/ a constant). Everyone has their own stories and reasons for why divorce is sometimes the only option, but I personally believe that if you both go into it knowing it’s true love then you can overcome anything. In Miranda’s case, I feel like she kinda settled for Daniel. On a lighter note, I’ll say that I’m always amused at how I never realised how serious this film was as a kid. I always watched it every time it came on TV because it made me laugh so hard but I never felt the weight of the divorce at all and I certainly didn’t get the innuendo at the dinner scene between Daniel and Stu. I remember being confused about why he was mentioning random stuff like Humpty Dumpty haha. I think it’s cool you were able to appreciate that on first watch. Favourite as a kid: Face in the cake Now: “No. He was hit by a Guinness truck. So, it was quite literally the drink that killed him.” Anyway, thanks for reacting to this amazing film! It made me miss this channel again haha. Seeing you get the jokes but also connecting on an emotional level with Daniel is what makes your reactions so great.
