easily the best video I've seen on youtube about the release and what lag really is. I golfed for 30 years and just worked with a coach for 6 months and this video made it all click. Shaft lean and lag isn't something you produce, it's the result of this movement. That was hard to wrap my head around and not taught very well in the golf world... but wow what a difference after seeing this video! big thanks!

Great vid Craig, l've been rattling around most of the swing gurus on RU-vid, think I'm gonna be sticking with you for some time, been trying to emulate Hogan most of my golfing life, his shaft almost looked like it was resting on the back of his neck during the down swing, your vid emphasises this retention of angle and a great way of achieving it, thanks again!

Probably the single most important video for adding distance. I've noticed the difference between pros and many of us. This actually points out exactly what the differences are. The maximum lag or collapse or fold dont happen at the beginning or end of the back swing but actually on the down swing. Good luck to us all trying to do that. Had succeses with the iron on shorter swings and felt the bal compressed at impact. On bigger swings and the driver, can't feel it.

Today after watching this video I had a mess around, I saw my average 9 iron go from 120 yards to 145.. this is my normal 7 iron distance, I saw my 7 iron go to around 170 yards. just seeing how close the shaft got to the shoulder on the downswing did it for me, just need to implement this into my wild driver now as I've lost so much control and confidence with it, I'm always chipping out the trees costing me shots 😅 great video

Thanks for the video. It took me almost a week to get this down but I can definitely reproduce it with a very minimal, as you showed in the video, take away. Maybe to hip height at max, however when I attempt to go any further, say 3/4 take away the whole process breaks down. Is it just a matter of sitting at this comfortable hip high take away and let time add some length to the back swing? or do you have any tips. At hip height things are going straight, as soon as I add more take away I'm block pushing right (right handed) or skulling things, etc. Thanks for such great content.

WorldClassGolf......in your demonstration of lag ....you're using a training club ( iron ) with a "Black" extremely oversized plastic club head. Also a training "grip". Is it possible to purchase that training aid. This would be beneficial to peripheral visioning the club head square during down swing. Please advise if that training club is available to buy one. All it takes is side bending to the right in the downswing, the same bio-mechanics as when tossing a stone across a pond side arm. Every pro does it to some degree depending on body type. Those with long torsos / short leg proportions can do it much more than one with short torso / long legs. Just stand poised at the top of the backswing at the point the club stops and reverses direction and do nothing except side bend to the right and observe what happens… the hands drop down on a circular path towards the ball and the right arm tucks into the body. That side bend move can be done independently from the hip and shoulder turn. What happens if you start to side bend to the right while the backswing of the shoulders is still occurring? The club head mass is jerked down in the hands causing the shaft to bend storing potential energy. If you try the side bend move starting at the top you will also find it creates a reflexive lateral shift of the hips to the target which will unlock the front leg and allow the hips to fire open. To maintain the bend in the shaft and potential energy to impact the hands must keep pulling down on the club head and accelerating faster than the club head mass does. If the speed of the club head catches up to the hands the bend comes out of the shaft and the potential energy is lost. How do the pros maintain that lag and bend in the shaft? By progressively increasing the amount of side bend in the spine throughout the downswing. Keeping the club shaft vertical in the downswing above the hands keeps it close to the center of rotation similar to how a figure skater pulls their arms in to spin faster. The better the golfer can lag the club and bring it down vertically the faster the physics will allow them to fire the hips open. At the point the hands reach the bottom of their swing arc the club shaft is horizontal with the ground allowing gravity to act on it along with the momentum to whip it around the hands if the golfer’s grip allows it to freely ‘waggle’ from thumb-up radial deviation to thumb down ulnar deviation, something recreational golfers fail to do because of poor grips with too much grip pressure in the fingers. The reverse bend comes out of the shaft to the point of bending past straight to forward as it bottoms out in its swing arc unless the golfer lifts the heel of the back foot to allow the hips to keep turning past 45° open. Keeping the back foot on the ground can result in the hips getting stuck 45° open and the shaft bending forward to the point of the head snapping off the shaft. Watch videos of Ben Hogan frame by frame watching the movement of his hands as they drop down below the waist, the blur of the club shaft as it accelerates and how and when he peeled his back foot off the ground then turned it to release hips and shoulders.
@CraigHansonGolf
@CraigHansonGolf 2 года назад
Thanks for sharing teddy 👍
@Bill-uo6cm
@Bill-uo6cm Год назад
You have to be careful about side bending to the right too early and to quickly relative to the rotation of your torso, I assume.
@TeddyCavachon
@TeddyCavachon Год назад
@@Bill-uo6cm I find it most effective to side-bend progressively starting with just enough when wanting to change direction of the club head to drop hands, tuck trail elbow back into rib cage and shift hips laterally, which “posts” the front leg vertically causing it to be the axis of rotation for the pelvis. At the point the hips reach 45° keeping my back foot grounded creates the “hitting the wall” sensation where hips stop but shoulders and pinned lead arm start rotating around the “stuck” hips. At that point hands have dropped to waist level with trail arm still bent at the elbow and wrist maxed out in radial deviation. At the point the shoulder swing past parallel to match the hips which are 45° the pinned front arm mass starts to fly off the chest. That considerable mass of the lead arm accelerating is what pulls the club head much faster through the ball than the speed of the shoulder turn alone. That’s the point in the swing, just before the shoulders open to target and release the lead arm mass to accelerate you want to crank in the side bend to tilt the shoulders and make that lead arm more vertical. The angle of the lead arm relative to the ground influences the direction it flies off and pulls the club. The more vertical you can get the lead arm as it flies off using side bend action the more it will pull club head mass and trail arm down the target line. That’s why golfers with longer than average torsos who can side bend more than those with short torsos tend to hit longer, straighter shots.

My swing doesn't have what these guys do. But I've found what works for me. And can hit if 280 at times. Even 300. The fundamentals are there. I've adjusted my face to close so my swing plane hits it perfectly for a fade. Pulling the club down. And elbow tucked in. Let my hips open. By placing back foot behind lead foot. And swing in to out. Works well. First season using a driver. Period. And I should of used it more the last season. But stuck to my irons. And 2i. I ain't no pro so getting 220 200 with my 2i was decent. Now I see how forgiving and further a driver is. Big face. Especially these new drivers.

You didn't mention anything about rotation of the upper body. Isn't keeping the arms moving in sync with the rotation of the upper body a big factor in maintaining that shaft angle? Doesn't that angle break down if you stop or slow your body OR your arms are thrown faster and out race your lower and upper body? I ask because I've worked and worked on lag drills and I've made very little progress. In fact my game has taken a turn for the worse

So, what was the answer to the initial position: "Why amateur golfers can't create lag" ? What you explained (very well) was HOW professional golfers create lag... But I didn't hear you explain why I can't do it...?
@CraigHansonGolf

You didn’t watch the drill at the end did you? - you see that’s the thing if you watch the entire video your question will get answered.

Honestly I think there is one point to mention. Average golfers are by far not flexible enough in the hands and shoulders to swing that lag without the hands gettig active and the club into the wrong position. That's the real reason in my eyes why we can't achieve that lag.

@@Aoughi it’s actually talent or lack of it. Sorry to be rude. It’s about reaching the next level. The amateur lag is a result of ability. I’ll post a video here

@@CraigHansonGolf alright i ll watch and try out. I myself as a 7 hcp with 40+ years can get nice compression on the irons when I very actively use my hands for holding the lag but then the timing is getting really difficult. Just feels like being too stiff for that 😂

Because they release the club to hit the ball, instead of catching the ball with it and releasing both!

They have very poor released there is no release really ..

Absurd to think a average golfer can get anywhere near those pros
@CraigHansonGolf
@CraigHansonGolf 2 года назад
Your absolutely right Greg. I never once mentioned that they could. The video shows extreme lag with Tour pros which is interesting. It’s about getting some LAG .. can you please show me where I said that the average golfer can get that much lag? Did you actually watch the drill at the end to help club players get a feel to get some lag? Because most can’t get any at all it’s that bad

Good way for the average player to end up in a car park or someone's garden. Ok if you're practising all the time and this is great instruction here but just saying.

So, a person who doesn't lag as much yet hits the ball further says what?
@CraigHansonGolf
@CraigHansonGolf 2 года назад
The video is about lag and for people who want more lag. - this creates compression , shaft lean and more speed for most people. The Video was not made for people that don’t lag that much but are still so amazing and able they hit to hit the ball SOO FAR! 💪💪

It is strange that People want to copy professionnels players. We all want to play football like Mbappé but we known we can’t. So play golf for fun.That's all.

@BenzeneHex57 2 года назад
@@CraigHansonGolf Yes I did. I thought you would address shallowing the club and the fact that the club head moves away from the ball initially. Some pros argue that a lot of the lag is an illusion due to the shallowing. The female in the video really shallows the club. I also thought that you would address the squatting move and how it causes shallowing of the club. Don't get me wrong I do none of this stuff well which is why i'm watching the video.
