"My country, the U.S., is unrecognizable now compared even to 20 or 30 years ago." When a world-renowned anti-poverty warrior and acclaimed economist like Dr. Jeffrey Sachs makes such a striking, unsettling statement, and supports it cogently with disarming insights, it behooves us to take keen notice and consider carefully what he has to say about how we find ourselves in these straits today, and what each of us might do to extricate America from this mire. I caught up with Jeff - it has been well over a year since we had an exchange - after his latest sojourn across the globe, from Australia, to Brazil, including to the inauguration of its president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, to Taipei, Taiwan, where he lectured as the Tang Prize laureate, to his encounters with indigenous groups in Colombia, to the Saving Humanity and Planet Earth (SHAPE) seminar, in Melbourne -- to an economics conference in, of all places, the tiny volcanic island of Nisyros, Greece!!, in the South Aegean, where my own family is from!!
