40:17 Q&A
World-renowned intellectual Jeffrey Sachs will speak on “The Path to Peace in Ukraine". Sachs was twice named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by Time and ranked by The Economist among the top three most influential living economists. He will be joined by University of Ottawa Ukraine expert Ivan Katchanovski who will provide background on the conflict in Ukraine as well as context around Canada's role.
***
BACKGROUND
Recently, the Canadian government called for regime change in Moscow and openly opposed China’s call for a truce and negotiations. At the same time Canada has donated more than $2 billion in arms to Ukraine.
Alongside large amounts of weapons, Canada is sharing critical military intelligence and training Ukrainian troops while Canadian special forces and former troops operate in Ukraine.
Russia’s war is illegal and brutal and Ottawa contributed to provoking this horrible conflict through its role in promoting NATO expansion, helping oust elected president Victor Yanukovich and military assistance that undermined the Minsk II peace accord.
It’s time the Canadian government pushed for a truce and negotiations to end the horrors.
***
SPEAKERS
Jeffrey D. Sachs is a professor and the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, where he directed the Earth Institute from 2002 until 2016. His most recent book is ‘The Ages of Globalization: Geography, Technology, and Institutions’ (2020). Sachs was twice named as one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential world leaders and was ranked by The Economist among the top three most influential living economists.
Ivan Katchanovski is a University of Ottawa professor who has published four books and numerous articles including “The far right, the Euromaidan, and the Maidan massacre in Ukraine” and “The hidden origin of the escalating Ukraine-Russia conflict”.

It's not the majority of Americans that believe this. It is Biden and his administration, and the owners of the news media in the US that merely propagates the dishonesty and falsehoods that support the US oil and gas industries, and the military defense industries. Simply put money talks and controls both the US political system and the news media. So, almost no one learns the truth and when they do learn the truth, they are powerless.

Jeffrey Sachs is Putin's bitch. He isn't on mainstream media because he spouts Putin talking points. Anyone with 2 brain cells has figured out NATO expansion is Putin's excuse, and has nothing to do with reality. If NATO were a problem, Russia would have to invade Finland now that Finland is in NATO. Absurd. In addition, when nations join together for protection against the bully, the bully has no say in who joins. This defies logic.

@@civildesobidience Let's get one thing straight--Jeffrey Sachs has been talking about finding peaceful settlement of this conflict--something any sane person should want. Clearly what you have presented has nothing to consider as far as peace is concerned, since by the 2nd paragraph, they are already talking about Yanukovich's SIN from an AMERICAN perspective, that being he was looking for neutrality. Oh I didn't know Ukraine has a border with the United States! WOW!! This narrative is weak and set up by the NEOCONS and WAR MONGERS in the collective west who have been playing their games with regime change. In 1957, Canadian Foreign Minister Lester B. Pearson won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in helping create the UN peacekeeping force and defusing the 1956 Suez Crisis. The 1972 Summit Hockey Series between Canada and the USSR was a foundational initiative that helped with Canada’s credibility in terms of international relations. Canada refused to join “the coalition of the willing” and did not declare war against Iraq in 2003 due to the lack of a UN Security Council resolution. Canada can stand on its own for peace. Trudeau is clearly an US stooge based on his record. Sad.

Professor Sachs lied here several time. He knows that by the way, just like Prof. Mearsheimer does. Russia demanded NATO not to expand at all, not just to Ukraine, justifying it by ... whatever. With Finland joining NATO, we see that Putin has been lying about the danger of NATO to Russia. He knew best that NATO was the least of any danger to Russia. That's why Putin moved all his battle-capable troops from the 1250km-long Finnish border and 12k soldiers from Kaliningrad (the Russian enclave in Central Europe surrounded by NATO countries for more than a decade) to Ukraine in 2022, where they all KIA, wounded or became POWs already. What is Finland now? It's 64x F-35s, fifth-gen air fighter bombers, which would need 45 min to get to Russia's St. Petersburg or 45 min to Murmansk, a Naval base with nuclear submarines. Is Russia going to invade Finland? Ukraine was not going to be admitted to NATO with France, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands and Turkey completely opposing it. It was another lie and excuse for Putin to invade Ukraine. No one on Earth makes any danger to the thermonuclear superpower Russia... Except for China, the only country to attack Russia since 1941, in 1969. Not to be mentioned that it is not a NATO expansion; it is sovereign nations applying to join NATO. With the latest round of peace proposals being pressed by multiple analysts, it’s worth remembering that all these supposed solutions for “lasting peace” are actually formulas for three things: • Dividing Ukraine • Preventing Ukraine from entering NATO • Giving Russia a chance to rebuild their military
@indycoon
@indycoon Год назад
@@christianevanherck6023 Ukraine is divided since it declared independence. Look at any elections in Ukraine before 2014. The war began when one part of Ukraine usurped power illegally with western help and money. When Ukraine declared independence in 1991, there was a promise about it's neutral status, equal rights for Russians and a status for Russian language. NATO is not an option. And Russia has enough military including nuclear weapons. It's too late to dream to weaken Russia militarily.

There was no ethnic conflict because radical nationalists and banderites were a minority before they seized power with violence and western support in 2014. @@indycoon You're wasting your time if you think you can mislead readers this way, by now everyone is familiar with all those typical Russian propaganda narratives, or you're just doing your job working at the trollfactory. Russia tried to get Yanukovich elected in 2004, and that fraud triggered the Orange Revolution. After 2004, Russia began a campaign to create separatist movements in Donbas and cranked up the propaganda targeted at those areas. After Russia got Yanukovich elected in 2010, Russia controlled Ukraine.
@christianevanherck6023
@christianevanherck6023 Год назад
@@indycoon By definition, a coup is when members of a country’s political elite, most often military officers, seize power by force. That is not what happened in Kyiv in 2014. Yanukovych was not removed as the result of machinations of his country’s political or military elite. He provoked protests through his own actions (refusing to sign an EU association agreement he had promised for years and then violently cracking down on protesters), and then planned to flee the capital, apparently hoping he could rebuild his power base outside Kyiv until planned December 2014 elections. Instead, his allies abandoned him, and so he abandoned Ukraine.

Ukraine is a multiethnic democratic nation whose elites and governments mostly spoke and spoke the Russian language at work and at home. Far-right have never influenced Ukraine's policies, unlike in Russia, where Nazi-bolshevik (Nazbols) took over and ruled the country for at least two decades, waging at least five wars. Moreover, there were never any organised separatist movements in Ukraine (even in Crimea) other than those that were organised, supplied, commanded and controlled by Moscow. Ever. Russia carefully planned the hybrid war on Ukraine since 2005. Russia invaded Ukraine in Crimea around 5 a.m. on 20 Feb 2014, when the Russian Special operation forces (CCO) entered Simferopol, Sebastopol and the cities near major Ukrainian military bases, ceased the govt offices and arrested officials and officers loyal to Ukraine. That all had begun before President Yanukovych signed the agreement with the parliamentarian opposition at 4 p.m. on 21 Feb 2021. Why? Putin wanted to take over 10 eastern and southern oblasts of Ukraine, cutting Ukraine from the sea. But he failed to do so in 2014, so he began the war in the parts of the Donbas. April - August 2014 Russia mostly used proxies, mercenaries, and spetsnaz in the Donbas. But, when Putin realised that the Ukrainians were taking their cities back, he moved regular Rus armies in and shot the MH-17 down. Thus Russia forced Ukraine to stop and sign the Minks agreements. Then, using both Minks, Putin wanted to insert those two small regions (even now, 1/2 of the entire Donbas by territory) back into Ukraine. Why? Those two big cities and towns around them were too small for Putin to annex (although both officially requested him for that in May 2014). So instead, he wanted to legalise them in Ukrainian politics, but with all Russian mercenaries and two army corps stationed in Luhansk and Donetsk, but commanded and controlled by Moscow. Of course, he wanted to keep control over the Ukr / Rus border to himself. He thought that would allow him totally control Ukraine. When in 2019, he realised that his plan to control Ukraine via those two proxies was failing, he began planning the full-scale invasion, which he started on 24 Feb 2022 and wanted to complete by the end of March 2022 by replacing all the central and regional Ukrainian governments (regime change in Ukraine), by imprisoning and killing all Ukrainian patriots, subjugating Kyiv to Moscow. Why? After Ukraine, he would go and take over Moldova in one-two day. Then he would re-establish USSR2.0 of some sort or a resurrected Russian empire, which would include Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Russia. Perhaps, some northern parts of Kazakhstan. Why? Professor Sachs lied here several times. He knows that, by the way, just like Prof. Mearsheimer does. Russia demanded NATO not to expand at all, not just to Ukraine, justifying it by ... whatever. With Finland joining NATO, we see that Putin has been lying about the danger of NATO to Russia. He knew best that NATO was the least of any threat to Russia. Counties can decide what to join)

But: As western media, many points that are worth talking about, they do not even mention. The tale of "heroic Euro- Maidan" for example just does not even touch reality. And saying, the US- administration had nothing to do with the developments is just a bad joke. The authors as we in the west, just deny the existence of pro- russian Ukrainians, especially in the eastern Oblasts and how they were treated by Kiew´s authorities between 2014 and 2022. I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for globalist oligarchs. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents.”― Smedley D. @@civildesobidience I read the letter. And I remain convinced that Sachs is right. First...the expansion of NATO is the fundamental issue. If you can't see that, I don't know what to say. Ukraine was in a state of civil war. Since the fire at the Trades Union Hall. The West armed and trained Ukranians. Russia did the same in the East. It was a very divided country. Peace talks are inevitable. This war can't go on. There is a fascist element in Ukraine. It's not large, but it certainly exists. Russia is biding its time. The Finland Sweden will be part of the eventual settlement. Demilitarisation probably. Well see. Russia will demand very comprehensive scope of settlement. Ukrainian sovereignty. Not legally established under international law. Regardless. Real world, too bad. Neutrality and autonomous. Independence ok. But no NATO. Sorry. That's just the way it is. See the Monroe Doctrine. Russia will keep Ukraine. Just a reality. The way it is going to go. Sevastopol and the other two big bases. Hawaii...Pearl Harbor. No Belt and Road for Hawaii. Too bad. Real world. Russia commits war crimes, is a bad actor, is dishonest. So is the US. Too bad. Reality bites. The point about Prof Sachs is that he is a realist, not an ideologue. It's clear to me that Ukraine should have accepted Minsk II. This war could have been avoided. There are many aspects of the situation here that are imorral and wrong. But there is nothing more wrong and immoral than this war! It has destroyed Ukraine! Damaged the world. Endangers global security. Caused multiple crises. What will be left of Ukraine after this. For the rest of our lives it will be a disaster area. Was it worth it? The Ukranians fought with such valour, bravery and determination. They have suffered so much. They are a magnificent people. But they made the terrible mistake of following NATO down the path to destruction. It's an absolute tragedy.

God, I love Prof Sachs. His intelligence and integrity give me some hope, slight as it is, that the tide can be turned against the growing darkness spread by US empire. Ever more people must hear these perspectives and weigh for themselves where the truth lay on Ukraine, China, etc. On a side note, as a Canadian citizen, I can't express the depth of my disappointment and despair in the actions of my government in perpetuating the Ukraine conflict. The propaganda I witness in Canadian media and in the statements of government officials makes me want to scream. Nobody is thinking. It's beyond shameful.

As a canadian citizen I strongly support Ukrainian people in their struggle for liberty, independence and territorial integrity. I am proud of our federal government that is at the forefront supporting Ukrainian people. Moral bankrupt people like Sachs and co, supporting Russian barbaric invasion should be ashamed.

My government (the danish) is just as pro-ukraine as yours, and I am satisfied by that, even proud of it. And I am glad that the british, german, french, finnish, swedish, norwegian dutch, spanish, czech, slovakian, italian, polish, bulgarian and other governments thinks the same way. All these governments consisting of well educated, well informed and democratic elected people - and their supporting officials - are WRONG according to mr. Sachs. It is pathetic. Maybe our differences is due to the fact that we live on different shores of the Atlantic? Who knows?

Beginning the discussion by saying Russia broke international law begs the question: hasn't the US been braking international law with every war it has started since Viet Nam? And didn't they provoke Russia into crossing borders in this one?

It's obvious Prof Sachs is extremely frustrated by all this & his anger is mostly directed at the so-called adults, US, Canada, EU. These adults of yesterday have grown old & senile it seems. They have a fantasy strategy of successfully defeating all their perceived enemies with minimum loss in this nuclear, hi-tech age. They've all gone demented. I can understand Prof Sachs frustration & concern & hope more do b4 we are at point of no return.
