Why AMERICANS Who CAN'T AFFORD America are Moving to THIS Country! 

The American dream has become escaping America for a vast majority of people. More than a few friends from the military never returned to the US. They typically visited the US before getting out of the military and immediately left again with no desire to ever return again. Soon as I can find a Remote position I too will be leaving the US.

I'm an American in my 50's who has dreamed about Portugal for years now. The American dream is dead here and has been for years now with it only getting worse day by day. Hope to be there in the next few years to retire in peace.

I was born in Tenerife (Canary Islands) fortunately here we have everything that you have found in Portugal, affordable cost of living, security, comfort, good level of sanitary facilities and even free of charge and excellent weather throughout year. I know what you feel because I know US and it is a completely different world. It is wonderful to be able to have a coffee at any time of the year in a square and enjoy the atmosphere. 🎉 Just as I tell you, I know what it feels like and how it is enjoyed. Another important factor is being able to enjoy the local idiosyncrasy, its gastronomy, customs and being able to integrate into them. Thanks for your videos. I share most of your thoughts on this. I just found your channel. Glad I did. I am an American and the new American dream is to get out of America. And it is true, safety is a huge issue more than ever. We are being invaded currently. I have been wanting to leave for awhile and I have been trying to convince my son to get out as well. There is a better life out there.

In answer to your last question, I am English rather than American but, yes, the past couple of years I have had my eye on Portugal as my doorway out of my withering country. I was half way out to Finland when the Brexit vote hit and removed my right to residency so, tho' the climate is not exactly the snow and ice I love, Portugal's willingness to let money talk when it comes to moving home is very enticing.

I understand that fully from a personal perspective. I would think the same when I would live in the US, had to work 24 hours a day (the modern slavery that is going on in the US ). Work life balance is generally much better in Europe, generally much more culture, much better quality of food, healthier life style (pedestrian instead of car centric for example ) plus Portugal offers next to that very low living costs, a nice climate and as you mentioned friendly people. But when it is happening on a large scale like you see in Lissabon, then it hurts the locals too much. Its almost if the Expats concur the city instead of adapting and integrating in the local culture. You see it also in cities like Amsterdam: there the expat communities get so big that english is pushing away the local language and you have to order in english also the Dutch themselves. A lot of expats that are coming to Portugal don't want to explore a new culture: they like cheap houses, nice weather and cheap food I am afraid. A lot of them don't even learn the local language. An attitude that I don't agree with, that I find personally disrespectfull. And I am not a nationalist, me and my wife lived in different countries as well, I like internationality, together we speak six languages fluently (my wife even a little Hebrew, learned on the Kibbutz, so 6.5 languages..) . I am part of that world, but we always respected the local culture and learned the local language. That is what makes it really interesting in my point of view. You see the same unfortunately in tourism; much Northern Europeans that are visiting Portugal or Spain just want to escape the bad weather. A pity, there is so much culture to explore. And also a pity for big parts of coast lines that are destroyed by ugly mass Hotel complexes, especially in Spain. Im glad I came across your channel. I was born in Peru but I grew up in the USA since I was a child. I’ll be retiring in 5 months and I have been eyeing Portugal to retired. I’m afraid to do it alone but you’re doing it. Maybe I should research more info on visas. Is it easy to find people to hang out with?

It's my only income from outside Portugal. I do plan to get a job in Portugal, but I am not sure if employment is allowed under D7. Pls help, thanks! 3. Can you apply for the D7 upon arrival or from the US or any Portuguese Embassy outside Portugal ? Thanks!

Isn’t taxes in Portugal very high? I was just in Northern Spain and Portugal . It seems like things in Portugal is a lot more expensive.

I am mid 50's American just starting to look for possibilities to move away when I retire. I suppose I could afford to live here in retirement if I was interested in South Detroit or Gary, Indiana. Hhmmm, Detroit or Portugal -- tough call.

Portugal could be an interesting option but one would probably have to be at least intermediate level in the Portuguese language first before moving there, I imagine. It's one language that I haven't studied.

10 years Tax Exemption might come to an end soon as I heard for the Foreigners retiring in Portugal . Time to think of going to another country , there are far too many foreigners already in Portugal causing a huge price increase in properties and causing other issues as well .

Portugal is a lovely country however a lot of older Americans can't afford such a high investment. We move to countries with a low cost of living where you can live on just Social Security, pensions and savings, spending $1500-$3000.month. This allows us to enjoy all the benefits without draining our bank account to buy property or making a long-term commitment.

We Portuguese don't have any objections on welcoming foreigners to our country but our government is not making the right policy just letting all kind of people entry event with no visa or working contract and that can be a big issue on a near future. Many are coming from cultures not suitable with our own.

Working in the United States and then retiring in Portugal is almost like cheating. On average the cost of living in Portugal is 50% less, so retiring in Portugal is like doubling your money. See you in 8 years, 1 month, and 12 days. 😊

I’m quite surprised at your remarks! Don’t want to rain on your parade but in Algarve I’ve met 1 US lady in 5 years! Health? Where? What? Hospitals closing down, loss of medical staff, rising prices, rising poverty, expensive rentals, thousands of apartments standing empty because of greedy landlords wanting tourist prices. Influx of immigrants and rise in crime. The EU a negative force for stability. You know there’s a saying which can apply here ‘Os gostos não se discutem’ good luck!
