Why Anakin's Fall Doesn't (Completely) Work 

That’s where the Clone Wars really shines. Because there you see the events that cause Anakin’s fall. Specifically, how the Jedi Council went against Ahsoka and how Obi-Wan kept a very big secret from him and never apologized for it.

I’m fine with him selling his soul to Palpatine to save Padme. Where Lucas lost me is 5 minutes after that he slaughters everyone in the Jedi Temple including Younglings. It’s one thing to sell your soul, it’s another thing to become a mass murderer. I think Lucas tried too hard to show how evil Anakin is when he becomes Darth Vader.

His fall to the dark side in the movies felt like they fell short of what they truly wanted to portray in the films.

As a married man, I feel this video completely. Their relationship was not what a relationship should be (like the one I'm currently stuck in).

This is why the novelization exists. It is a beautiful book, filled with Information the movie didn't have time to show. Palpatine's relationship with Anakin is explored, Palpatine's reveal is also way better, giving Anakin the Chance to choose everything he wants. Anakin just stares out of the Windows and asks Palpatine to give him expensive things, later as Anakin has his lightsaber activated Palpatine says " Anakin when i gave you the Chance to take everything, did you think i Was excluding my own life?". Just beautiful.

This video is spot on for how I felt. I think clone wars adds layers to his reasoning for betraying the Jedi, but I feel like there’s stuff missing to complete his motivations. I hope we get a clone wars Vader series during the start of the dark times that gives more context through flashbacks

I actually feel it was rushed in the sense he goes from saying "what have I done?" & torn, to killing kids next scene. That I never bought for a second & wasnt earned enough. I feel we needed more time with anikins anguish being forced to confront other jedi. I also think a lot of good stuff & ideas got cut in editing due to time restraints which could have helped have much more fleshed out story. Also I think George over directed hayden with how he wanted him deliver lines. Feel like he was holding back

Logically: Anakin sold his soul to the devil to save Padme and in the process of becoming more powerful to save her, he started to become greedy and wanted to control faith and their lives in order for everything to be the way he wants it to be. He became more and more possessive of her and thinks she filled the attachment given to him by his mother. "I don't want things to change" "I wasn't strong enough to save you...,I promise you, I won't fail again" and "Well I should be, someday I will be, someday I'll be the most powerful Jedi ever. I promise you. I'll even be able to stop people from dying" Emotionally: Padme is everything to Anakin. Padme fills the spot that was reserved for his mother and he's attached to Padme the same way he was attached to his mother. Anakin loves Padme because of her beauty and independence. She can get things done politically but also is able to act like a fun wild innocent girl when with him. Anakin's attracted to that strength from Padme alongside her beauty to him. Padme and Anakin got married as soon as possible because of the war and because they're rushing into love which will end up being a tragedy for them later. By the time we get to Revenge of the Sith Anakin's been on a few missions where he spents long periods away from Padme and they are just so glad to each other again. After Anakin and Padme are messing around with each other while discussing the baby in the balcony scene (admitedly the dialogue could've been done better to empathize that), Anakin has the nightmare of Padme dying in childbirth and by this point his attachment to Padme has grown into something very possessive, and he just feels like he can't live without her, so he'll do anything and everything he can to save her, and hes' desperate so he'll believe lies and half truths just to have the hope or chance of being able to save her.

After watching the Clone Wars (a series i always to as my Star Wars 'education') it all made so much more sense to me. p.s. that Krusty clip was perfect 😂

Lucas's ex wife note being part of the prequels is a bummer for this reason...its been said she was the "heart" behind the OT and when things got too wooden, she'd tell Lucas to adjust things so it felt more emotionally grounded. You can feel her missing in the PT.

I see your point. I don't fully agree with it since to me the whole point of the core of Anakin's character is loss trauma and crippling fear of loss/abandonment. So I actually buy the idea he'd loose his senses over this. What I take issues with is how fast it goes. I know the movie had a length to abide by, but to me it would have been so much more believable if we had actually seen Anakin slowly, over a long period of time, spiraling down into depression, a sense of being completely lost and losing track of what he should or shouldn't do, what is right and what is wrong, who he can or cannot trust. In ROTS (my favorite SW movie) he goes from a perfect hero looking so good in his shoes with an amazing dynamic with his master and a happy marriage, to very quickly killing children.

I blame the dialogue and directing. Lucas is the one that decides if a given take is acceptable. So when we see painful scenes, he is the one to determine if it's a winner and time to move on to the next.

To me, Skywalker should have been just like Obi-Wan Kenobi described him to Luke. You know, a good man who fell to the Dark Side. His arc should have been tragic and relatable instead of being preprepared.

I agree with you I've always said Lucas should have done a 4-5 movie Arc with Anakin Skywalker and I would have made revenge of the sith a 3 hour epic

His fall doesn't work because his motivations make no sense. In the OT, Vader was said to have fallen to the dark side because he was tempted by all the power it granted him. The prequels trying to recontextualize Vader is one of the worst things about them.

I also think Selfishness plays a factor of Anakin fall when he talking about “only his power can save her” and “Ruling the galaxy together” it stop being about Padme and all about himself he thought he can controls Padme and be possessive of her actions it that selfish love lead to the dark side. At least clone wars both 2003 and 2008 gave the relationship layers it better than that toxic Reylo ship my god that is force and goddamn weird.

Not to mention, he outright Force chokes her, in the end! It's really hard for me to buy into the idea that he turns to the dark side in order to protect her after that! If he really loved and wanted to protect her in the end, then why did he leave her in a crumpled heap on the ground, gasping for air? I'm just sayin'...

They are not nightmares they are force visions that the jedi didn't help him understand. Had he been given the rank of master he would have had access to the jedi archive and would have learned about them himself. Plus Palpatine CLEARLY tells Anakin the faster he gives in to the darkside the stronger he will become to "Learn" the ability to save Padme be also his plan was for Anakin to finally become the new master of the sith. We shortly learn that not even palpatine new how to save Padme So the quickest way for Anakin to go full sith was to have him murder All jedi and Youngling's

I think it was George who had strategy but sucked in tactics He had a brilliant idea he couldn't shape properly. The thing is, had he done all this perfectly we wouldn't see the series. Shame that Disney writers sometimes have even less skill in storytelling than George has

I don't believe this to be a controversial statement. This was one of the key reasons audiences failed to connect with the Prequels 10-15 years ago. If you didn't believe in the love between Anakin and Padmé, you wouldn't believe in Anakin's fall. Because audiences didn't believe in either back then, the trilogy didn't work for them
