Why ANDOR made me ANGRY

Andor is actually pretty great. But something just felt wrong and we will get to that. The show is very well shot, the costume design is on point, the sets look real and weathered, the lighting, the acting, it is all very well made. I don’t think the show moves at a glacial pace like some others think in the fandom. None of the episodes outright bored me but I also wasn’t glued to the screen and gasping the whole time.
Despite the show centering around a character we already know the fate of, it still has a lot of meat on the bone. I would give the first 3 episodes like 7.5 death stars out of 10 or whatever. What had me bumming was all the positives. How is Andor, a show about a forgettable character from a one off movie, leagues above a Kenobi show? Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t HATE Kenobi but it looked like an ameture production in comparison to Andor. The small editing mistakes, the bizarre camera movements, the Volume being used heavily are not present in Andor.
It’s insane to me that they could make such an eh show with Kenobi but seemingly knock it out of the park with Andor. Kenobi and Boba Fett were the most lukewarm, skim milk shows. What do you think of Andor so far? Let me know in the comments.

They relied too heavy on the Obi-Wan Kenobi name and the cameos from Darth Vader and Leia, they didn't focus too much on the details like in Andor a character from a one off movie, they needed to draw people in, everyone would watch Kenobi, they needed to make sure people came and stayed for Andor

Then how does that explain Rogue One being amazing. It has the droids, aliens, and battles but still has engaging and personable characters who you care about, acting that isn't cringe, and no need for campy/cliche moments that don't make any sense (I'm looking at you fire pit separating Obi-wan from Vader. They show it in wide shots, it's like 20 feet wide. They could have just walked around it and grabbed Kenobi in like less than 10 seconds; but no, they stare at each other for several minutes while you see time isn't frozen because storm troopers are running back and forth in the background panicking at the small fire that they're not trying to put out but rather manically gesture towards like cavemen who have never seen such a thing before).

Andor Fantastic! This is solid cinematography and writing at a peace that builds up anticipation. The shots and sceneries remind me of a full blown movie epic, and I somehow forget I’m watching Star Wars because the environments seemingly blend into the story, where all I’m wondering is “what’s the this team n heist? And okay, this is a interesting in-depth look into the imperial world n process.” We’re also allowed a moment to see how the rebellion has to hide and act in a Post clone war, Empire. And the drama of the politics without it being to dull / ham fisted.

Andor shows you what Lucas wanted: politics, bureaucracy etc. But done well: Not too much, not too little. Just enough so we get the point. Andor could be straight out of the history books and that’s why it’s so relatable. It could be about the British Empire, the Soviet Union or Hitlers Germany.

I really think people misunderstand how "disney star wars" works. I think too many think of it as some conglomerate "pumping out content". The reason Andor is better than Kenobi is because the creative team behind Andor is better than the creative team behind Kenobi.
@BarbsBasement
@BarbsBasement Год назад
I’m definitely not confused by that. There isn’t a chart somewhere that Disney has that’s from the best to the worst. My whole point is that Andor is great and I’m perplexed by how someone could have made such a medium show about Kenobi. They learned a lot from Mando Season 1 and that was to barely use practical sets and film everything in the Volume. Kenobi suffered greatly from this.
@Lava589
@Lava589 Год назад
@@BarbsBasement Right, what I am arguing is that Disney has less oversight than people think. I think they give more control to the creators than what is expected. Look at how some shows use the volume but then Gilroy was given full range to use an entire set. Even with the sequel trilogy, there's an entire rivalry where Abrams is single-handedly retconning what Rian Johnson did in the previous movie. I don't think Disney's Star Wars has a Kevin Feige type person behind the scenes, as much as we think. I wish we had someone behind the scenes to make sure Episode 9 made a more cohesive trilogy or that they kept the Kenobi on track to make a better show, but I don't think that's the case.

It's a very well-written, grounded and hard-boiled spy thriller (so, John Le Carre, not James Bond), that could have been made at any point in the last 60 years. The downfall of the Kenobi and Boba Fett series, is that they are pinned down by expectations - there are a lot of people, who want a lot of different things, and who have very different ideas of who these characters should be, and what they should be doing. Ultimately, they ended up playing it safe, so that nobody got too angry online, and that limited what they could do.

Simply, someone had a story to tell for Andor and cared enough to put work into it, focusing on making a well-written story first. When the pandemic hit and work ceased entirely, Gilroy…took the opportunity to redraft the script. Versus other Disney run projects where the script was literally being written as filming was going on.

I think it boils down to a higher censorship rating to express their creativity and direction. In my region here, it's given an NC16 rating. It's definitely much more mature. The violence is more brutal than every other Star Wars content that we're normally used to. And why it's more enjoyable than the Obi-Wan or Boba Fett series is because they're not limited by its legacy. Every character in Andor is morally grey. Lines are blurred between good and evil. Even the "good guys" can cross the line in the name of rebellion. Taking children hostage, even if they're the offspring of the bad guys, is a war crime in itself. Great writing, great production, great acting, great direction. I can't give it enough praise. It truly is an outstanding series.

The difference is that with kenobi and boba fett, their only purpose was to draw fans in with characters everyone already knew and loved. They were money grabs that disney demanded be made, and the creatives had to half-heartedly form a story around these characters. Andor being about a seemingly inconsequential character from a one off movie makes me think that the idea was birthed from the creative team behind the show, and not disney execs, because they had a story they wanted to tell. They were much more passionate about telling andor’s story than about rehashing characters we have been seeing for years

Kenobi was made to make fans squeal like small children. The question being asked by the writers was “What would a drooling fanboy want to see?” And the answer was: Order 66, Bale Organa, clone troopers, the Inquisitors, death sticks, Hayden Christianson as Darth Vader, Mustafar, Fort Inquisitorious, Owen and Beru action scene(?), Kenobi vs Vader rematch, and most importantly “Hello there”. It’s things you know, but not thing’s you’ll care to remember. The show was made to satisfy the memes. They never cared if what they were doing with the character was accurate, or even harmful. All that mattered was the meme… and Star Wars fans swallowed it like the good little nerds they are.

Obi wan was an event in obi wans life, it wasn't actually about Kenobi.

If I had to guess, I think the issue is that Andor wasn't expected to be a big hit due to the low profile of the characters involved. Since it was expected to flop, the executives at Disney werent focused on it and didnt give much input to the show which allowed the writer/s to create a genuinely good story.

To me it felt like the production team focused on certain things they wanted to see, and didn’t really spare much thought to the rest. Classic example was the escape from fortress inuisitorious. They wanted a snowspeeder strafing run, that would look cool. Consequently you got that awful scene of kenobi smuggling leia out under a trench coat, and them seemingly forgetting that kenobi etc are essentially in a three sided box that is the hanger, so when the snowspeeders fly over their heads they should crash straight into the back wall of the hanger

Andor actually started it's production around the same time as mando 1, where as kenobi and boba were put into production after mando 2 had begun filming as well as andor stopping during covid and the other shows kept filming meaning the the crews were smaller, and those shows rely on cameos, nostalgia and is written and directed by people with very little experience, only j fav has experience of everyone making those shows, where as andor has a very experienced writing team and successful projects behind them like house of cards and the Bourne franchise, which you can feel in the dialogue, in andor characters are smart and don't have to spell everything out, one of the first scenes shows this when andor is putting together his alibi, brasso doesn't need to know what happened he just knows his friend needs him and we the audience can tell they're friends and have lied for one another before by how they react, where as in the other shows, we'd get his name, andor would call him his friend, how long they been friends and a quick history. They used real and practical effects, real sets and locations, like I've been to where the heist arc was filmed, it's a damm in Scotland. On the story front andor drew inspiration from philosophy books on oppression and rebellion, as well as real life people who went through things similar to the characters, where the other shows don't have stories or if they do very simple ones that require characters to be stupid, andor is really that complex it's mature sure but it does something the others don't and it respects the audience and it doesn't rely on constant action because it doesn't think the audience will pay attention unlike the other shows, like the other shows have really interesting and cool ideas but they never explore them, instead they have dumb action, like when a town is being attacked and a character decide to head home and get his rancor instead of his much fast and more powerful starfighter now that's fine, if that's what the finally will OK but the writers have to justify why boba didn't grab his ship or if a jedi was in a fight to the death with his enemy and instead of killing him he just walks away, now I understand kenobi can't kill vader cause the new hope has to happen but again you have to justify why, not because he decides not to, the first time in rots obi is heart broken but he even says the vader isn't anakin so you can't just say the same as that contradicts what you already said, I personally wouldn't of had vader in the show at all but if he had to be they should of done it in dream sequences, like obi relives mustifar and wishes he did thinks differently and that's why he's so focus on if Luke is showing as he must train him and right his wrongs but no we have to watch obi and a chilli pepper chase a little girl.

An entry level, but still reliable, take is that the production team upped their game for Andor simply because the eponymous character lacked the infinite quantity of goodwill that fans have invested over decades of time into a Kenobi or Fett. Most never head of Andor, and Rogue One didn't even come out that long ago. Basically less room for error on Andor from the outset meant the team couldn't afford to mail it in.

Andor finally treated the old school Star Wars fans like intelligent adults, and tried to make a grounded story revolving around the start of the rebellion and what that would actually look like. Obi-Wan was just empty and pointless fan service. Also worth noting is apparently the higher ups in the studio mostly dismissed Andor and gave it creative freedom because they didn't think much of the show. Boy, were they wrong.

It’s complacency. With the other two they relied on the names and popularity to draw people in and didn’t need to get all the little things right because they knew people would watch it. It didn’t help the Kenobi was a side character in his own show. With Andor nobody was going to be drawn in purely by the name and idea so they actually focused on the details and writing to keep viewers. Andor contained multiple simple sequential stories that demonstrated what life under the Empire and being a rebel truly entails. What was Boba Fett about? The best episodes were really Mandalorian season 2.5. Kenobi was about an inquisitor who wanted revenge on Vader.
