Why Andre 3000 Sabotaged His Career (On Purpose)

Across generations and various waves of the genre, a fine line has existed between becoming a legend and ending up as a shadow of your former self. Taken from performing to seas of people in arenas to the diminishing returns of the nostalgia circuit, there’s a case to be made for your reputation in hip-hop coming down to whether or not you outstay your welcome. But while some of the game’s biggest rappers have tried to stand in defiance of the clock and occasionally stumbled as a result, today’s story is that of a man who has chosen to hold any dreams of reclaiming his spot at a safe distance and has basically done the unthinkable in some people’s eyes.
Of course, we’re talking about the one, the only, Andre 3000. Ask anyone in hip-hop circles about Andre Benjamin, better known by the name of Outkast’s Andre 3000, and you’re more than likely to hear them discuss his position among the greatest to ever grasp a mic. From Travis Scott to Future and Childish Gambino, his influence and the respect that he commands is more universal than practically anyone still breathing.

Class of 3000 was cool, doesn’t matter how many seasons a show is, doesn’t stop it from being a good watch. Hearing he supports open mics and others art, exploring sounds giving different things a go and playing a flute there just for fun, is such a vibe in my mind.
@genius179
@genius179 2 года назад
Also think of this with Andre, he was doing music since he was 17-30, it’s quite possible he wanted to know more of who he was other than just a man that could rhyme well. Like, it’s like those athletes who by 30 some are confused because their life just revolved around sports for so long and all relationships came from sports and they don’t know who they really are. Man, honestly if he don’t make music anymore that’s cool. I really hope that brother is in a good space. Like the vid mentioned his parents death has affected him, I remember he did put a song out on Mother’s Day a couple of years ago, it does remind you that holidays like that aren’t happy for everyone. Also that class of 3000 show was cool, I liked that show
@thewriter8762
@thewriter8762 2 года назад
I think the crux of all this is that he understands it’s more than just the music. You nailed it on the head as to where if you are so entrenched in a certain group, you see yourself as only existing in that group. That you can’t expand and grow. Rn Kendrick has taken a long hiatus and he’s been gone for so long, trying to do his own thing and he is having people practically turning on his music saying it wasn’t that good, just because he isn’t dropping a new album on our timetable. Artists are people, and if they don’t wanna be more than just that artist, they are well within their rights to do so.
@genius179
@genius179 2 года назад
@@thewriter8762 100% correct they are with their right. If they do not think they have a passion for music right now then do not release. Many of us can tell when it seems forced, and that is likely when some crap comes out. The wildest part is it seemed in interviews even though the clothing line and tv show were not huge successes (again class of 3000 was a fun show to me), he enjoyed the experiences of trying those projects. It's great too because that is how life is supposed to be, always trying something new whether it is a small as cooking a new dish or starting a new business. He always trying something different, remember he was acting in a few movies in the 2000s (Four Brothers, Idlewild, Semi-Pro). He's actually a good actor from what I remember. I never saw the Jimi Hendrix movie but I heard his performance was good in that.

His interview with Rick Rubin is the clearest window you'll get as to who Andre 3000 is as a human being. An immensely talented artist, one of the best of all-time, yet an introverted and shy soul who doesn't feel the same confidence everyone else sees within him which is why well probably never hear another solo album from the guy. It's still "thank you for everything" to him and all of Outkast.
@thewriter8762
@thewriter8762 2 года назад
It’s sad cuz it’s an artist’s journey. Immensely talented or unorthodox thinkers can be seen through a lens w of greatness. Look through another and see someone who isn’t good enough. As long as you can determine what voice is the part of you that wants to improve versus the ones that just wanna see you fail, you can be fine. But for people that can’t live with that voice forever, you just gotta stop or else you push yourself off the edge.

Andre 3000 is just madly humble and overall such a good person. From the people I heard who worked with him, they said he was a sweet, cool dude, or something along those lines. I honestly feel bad that he’s in a funk and doubts his greatness when it comes to his talent because he really is good a what he does, but at the same time he’s living the best life right now. Oh yes, Class of 3000. A show I didn’t ever forget since it came out. Great series…currently showing some love to it on my channel 😅❤

@@BIGMONEYMEDIA well that's all because what's "good" is subjective, and as Andre properly pointed out (and what a lot of us old heads refuse to accept) is that music is never stagnant. We all think that when we jumped into music was the best time, both the evolution of what was and definitely better than where it's going...but Andre just accepts that his time as being the pinnacle embodiment of what music values has come and gone. People like dumb catchy lyrics and good hooks and beats now. Lyricism has become a niche, and with intelligent wordplay being the determining factor, Andre is one of the top 5 alive.

I wish rappers, who get older, would still make hip hop. We don’t want to hear you use the slang, the pop-cultural reference, the drugs and fashion. We want to hear the tale of one of the greats after the glitter magic. Of them realizing they have changed, the new struggles they go through, dealing with getting old, but most importantly: how they continue to be that person (or a form of that person). How their outlooks have changed and/or remain the same. We didn’t fall in love with the hip. We fell in love w/ that hop even when u feel like you flop. Much love 3K. Awesome reporting btw

I mean, every Outkast album is essential, iconic, successful and critically acclaimed. The Love Below is essentially his solo within the catalog. Especially for a Southern Group in the 90s in the midst of East/West dominance. Open the Atl gates, classic Features usually out rhyming the main star. With no damper on the Dungeon Family legacy. What more do y’all want from the ATLien?
@balthorpayne
@balthorpayne 2 года назад
He made his mark. We can want the music, but if the man ain't in it, he ain't in it. It stands to reason he said what he did on being "hip". The energy that fueled his efforts for damn near 2 decades was diminished. He had new thoughts and feelings but could not express them in the same way as it is inauthentic. Instead of forcing the issue, he opts not to make the music outside of incredible features from time to time. At the very least, we were not robbed of great music, we were spared from getting mediocre, uninspired music being pushed by his past greatness. He never has to drop another song and he is already one of the greats. His bars are incredibly memorable and will live with those who heard them and he doesn't need to chase a new audience or disappoint the old one.

Or, The reasons to gamble on greener grass being in the other side = gets less and less important.. or reasonable... or seemingly rewarding enough to build or create your means, to get over, to that / the other side It’s like, anything “on tape” feels needy or grasping.... it's not that he doesn't have anything to say, it's that he knows that real people aren't listened to in the entertainment industry (yes, real people listen to real people, but that's the twist he hasn't come around to yet). there's so many underground artist's putting out just draw dropping art, yet "the industry" follow's Nicki Minaj like she's the reincarnation of Jesus. from what i can tell, he's still tied to that notion of "success" in his head, that he doesn't realize that almost everyone knows how hollow and predatory "the industry" is, and that even star's like Bruno mar's are finding subtle way's of doing it on their own. finally, after a number of year's, not saying that it's the right thing or not, you just start realizing that everything that pushed you to share with the world, either you got it figured out, or you realize the value as tom hardy put it, "Some people don't understand that sitting in your own house alone in peace eating snacks and minding your business is fucking priceless." yes, art is for all age's, but i don't think he's really understood that you CAN do it without all the toxicity you had to put up with in the yesteryear's of fame. hopefully he does, but from what i can tell, he still think's music is a young man's game, when that's really the furthest thing from the truth.
