Love this message! I bowhunt at home in Montana and spearfish from shore in Japan where I work. My son speared his first fish at age five! We get in the ocean summer and winter and put a lot of fish in the freezer. My kids love camping on the beach and spearfishing! Thanks for this interview, Cliff.

@@CliffGray yes. IMHO, we humans are so totally out of our element in the ocean! It’s such an unknown environment for most guys that it takes either real bravery or some great guidance to get into the water. As you guys alluded to in your discussion, we are not at the top of the food chain out there and just being the water can kill you. If you’ve been spearfishing enough, you’ve been wrapped up in your cord or you’ve had a bad cramp in your leg or the waves got bigger than you expected or some other thing that can get you killed has happened. Agree? I totally agree with you that spearfishing is another bowhunt…and I’m so happy to be able to introduce these pursuits to my children at a young age.

Any type of fishing I do in the ocean, is gonna involve a rod and reel. I have gone ocean fishing before as a kid. My dad used to take me before it just got too expensive. Been to sea for several days at a time, it's hard work. There's two things I remember most: (aside from big ass fish) 1. The flood lights around the boat while it was still dark, bringing squid up to the surface and catching them for bait. We'd chuck them in the live well. The vibration of the engines through the deck, and smell of the engines, the lights, the dark beyond it, the roll of the boat, it was surreal. 2. My favorite spot on the boat was towards the back of the boat where the starboard or port rails met with the stern rails. I'd just post myself into that corner, and let the roll of the boat jig the line for me sometimes. The slow roll of the boat, and the the sun felt good. I tried snorkeling once, and only once. Froze my ass off. All of that is behind me now. Ain't nothing on the coasts that interests me anymore. It's not lost on me that I haven't been in the mountains since November of last year, and I'm chomping at the bit. Dang Easter Sunday getting in the way of a scouting trip for my LE turkey tag which starts in two weeks. Yes sir, I have priority problems. If I wasn't going to get the stink eye from the wife, i'd be in the mountains this weekend.

Spearfishing is how i got into bow hunting, to me, bow hunting is just spearfishing on land 💪🏽🤣

The ocean terrifies me. How do you just jump off into such a massive abyss that’s chock full of monsters far better equipped to survive in water than you are? It’s not discomfort. It’s terror. I’d rather deal with a grizzly, and I don’t care if that’s illogical.
