Why Apple Discontinued HomePod

Apple Explained

Apple currently sells the HomePod mini to compete with other popular smart speakers like the Amazon Echo and Google Nest. But this wasn’t their first attempt. Back in 2018, Apple released the original HomePod. Which they promised would “reinvent music in our homes.” But demand for the product was so low that it was eventually taken off the market completely. So why did Apple discontinue HomePod?

I think another reason the HomePod didn’t sell great was because according to MKBHD, you couldn’t use the HomePod with Bluetooth, which for that price is a MAJOR problem that deters a lot of people from buying it!

Well, the HomePod mini doesn’t have that functionality either (I own one, and I’ve checked with Apple and other tech sources). It has Bluetooth, but that is not used to play audio.

@@boogdoggtx the HomePods are made for Apple users. When the HomePod first launched you could only use Apple Music with the HomePod. Even now third part streaming services don’t really work that well. Also you need an iPhone or iPad to set up a HomePod. They aren’t made for android users. Therefore traditional Bluetooth isn’t needed.

I bought two right as they were getting discontinued to use in lieu of a more traditional soundbar underneath our wall mounted TV and tucked them above some shelving just hidden out of view and WOW, when I tried Dolby Atmos via my Apple TV, I was freaking blown away. These HomePods should have never been discontinued. I’d purchase more if they were still available. This video is 100% spot on though that Apple didn’t do a good job at communicating to consumers how these were actually a very solid price for the quality as opposed to $550 Sonos 5, or Bose 500 series. All people saw in retail stores was Apple’s fashionably late-to-the-party smart speaker was at least $200 more than a cheap Amazon Alexa Echo or Google Home Mini. They could have done so much more with this insanely well-engineered cylindrical speaker than they did; similar to the touchbar on their MacBook Pro lineup. 😞

Home pod is great for those who are purely into Apple and have Apple Music. If you have a mix of tech, like most do, including me, it's a waste of space when other speakers perform admirably and are arguably more flexible. As for movies, I have a dedicated home cinema for that, each speaker costing more than the price of a home pod on its own, and there are 7 of them around me, not including the two subs. Stereo sound just doesn't cut it except for music maybe, but even then my amp does an amazing job of splitting out the music into the various channels so that it surrounds you.

I wonder whether Apple made the right decision to limit the market when they introduced HomePod. In the Netherlands e.g. HomePod wasn’t available due to the inclusion of Siri, which wasn’t ready in Dutch. I finally bought one imported from Germany. When I decided to extend my HomePod collection, Apple decided to discontinue it. Which I find really sad, as I’m fully immersed in the Apple ecosystem.

I completely agree. I think now a technology-updated full HomePod, broadly available world-wide would probably sell. I have a few minis and would buy one or more HomePods to supplement them for better sound if they were still available/current. Let's hope, they will extend the mini with abetter speaker-system in the future. For me Apple ecosystem integration is really key, e.g. I have a nice B&O 5.1 setup (AirPlay, Bluetooth,... capable) in one room, but still find myself using a HomePod mini in the same room more often because of its Apple Ecosystem integration convenience (e.g. playing Apple music,web-radio,... directly via Siri).

@@zachvlasuk For its size the Mini has very good sound quality but no doubt HomePod's sound is wayyy head and shoulders above HomePod Mini especially, but not limited to, the low frequencies. For bass size matters, period. For my on the go portable bluetooth speaker I have a Sony Extra Bass model. The thing is a tad smaller than the mini and probably half of its weight. For its size it has some bass but any song that has notable bass, the Sony will vibrate itself right off of a table.

There is a very nuanced reason that never gets discussed. I consume most of my content on my iPod Pro and in situations where I use the speakers, the sound gets beamed from my MBP. For all practical purposes, including watching a movie, my MBP offers a great sound stage which negates the need for the HomePod. Got tempted and bought a Mini. It met the fate I feared it would deserve. Went back into the package it came in. :-) I am planning to buy two more and try using them as my intercom. No need for soundbars when you have the MBP (unless you are an audiophile)

I feel like Apple just really missed the mark with the HomePod. People were buying these things for more easy to use digital assistants more than they were the audio quality. For these people, so long as the speakers don't distort, it's fine. Then there's also the question of why focus on audio quality when there isn't an easy way of getting lossless audio to it? Compression tools these days are honestly quite amazing, and while 320 kbps MP3 may be plenty good enough for most people, for a certain market demographic, it isn't (and I'm not even talking about production here).

I really don’t understand why the market rejected this product. Consumers have shown that they are willing to spend more money on something that works and sounds better if its an audio product. I think this would have sold better if the mini came out alongside it so that people could buy one HomePod for their favorite room and a mini or 2 for the rooms that were used but more infrequently. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a Home Pod max or something like that with a full touch screen so they can advertise it as the hub to your smart home. I think people would get behind that idea if the price wasn’t absurd(for apple standard not normal standards)

They seem to have latched onto the problem, which is the culture of people wanting intra-home music and speakers (as opposed to one big loud sound system as with many years ago), and that they want Bluetooth and voice activation. Most people don’t really know good sound quality and so you don’t have to sell it to them - Beats built a whole business model on marketing poor sound with great looks and connectivity - but this is shifting a bit as people are exposed to more and more quality systems.

For that price I definitely got my money's worth. My only real gripe is Siri is still dumb, sometimes I'll request a song and she'll have a struggle trying to find the song I'm talking about, even if I read it word for word off the Apple Music app. Even with the more well received HomePod mini, I feel like Siri is what holds it back from being great.

There reasons are: 1/ Overprice (most important reason) 2/ Siri is TERRIBLE compare to other smart assistants. 3/ HomePod does not play well with android, PC, and even Mac, no way to connect except using AirPlay. 4/ You have to have an iPhone. It is a smart speaker, it should have multiple interfaces for different platforms rather than stuck with only AirPlay. This product just does not make any sense.

@todd_raymond
@todd_raymond 2 года назад
@@aignasty I initially thought we'd see a replacement soon too. And we still might. For you, with just 2 speakers, the refresh isn't so bad. I put them in all rooms of my house, stereo pairs everywhere. Eventually the A8 chip from the iPhone 6 used in HomePod will no longer support HomepodOS. We will be forced into an inferior HomePodMini, or buying all new hardware again. Don't get me wrong, I was an early adapter into getting the latest phone/iPad/watch. But for something as simple as a speaker that plays music on command, it's not worth the thousands of dollars every couple years. They are always glitchy, not just latest update. I'm constantly unplugging them to restart. My stereo pairs get out of sync in the middle of the day playing an echo'd version of the music. Sometimes one speaker just gets crackly until I restart it. And often their HomeKit support goes offline until I unplug them. For the money, they are finicky. When they work, they are awesome. But it's not a set it and forget it kind of hardware. Honestly, I didn't have much trouble when I had just two. But now it's constant maintenance. And yes, they all have an APC Battery Backup to ensure issues from low voltage and spikes. Plus it keeps music going when the power goes out, as well as HomeKit.

@@todd_raymond imho even after Apple drops support for A8 chip Airplay still will work. I doubt that Apple will brick homepods
@todd_raymond

@@aignasty Honestly, I never use Airplay, and wasn't the reason for investing in a smart speaker. I suppose you could potentially be right. All of my music is played through scenes. 4:30am, wakeup music, followed by 5:00am motivating music, and then at the beginning of my work day, music changes to something appropriate and an appropriate volume automatically. When I leave the home, music stops, when I return, music picks up where it left off. If during my day I want something different to listen to, I simply invoke a playlist or scene. I'm not tying up my phone to play music. Music continues to play when I'm on the phone. This is why I purchased a smart speaker. Will AirPlay continue? Possibly, but at a greatly degraded capability, and more manual approach to playing music overall. If AirPlay is what you use, sure, you might be fine. But if I have to return to playing music from my phone, I'll just invest outside the Apple ecosystem and put a decent home audio solution in the home and not worry about quirky updates and discontinued support.

For the first time, Apple developed a product that was truly years ahead of its' time. At the time of the HomePod creation, streaming Lossless HiRes music content and Dolby Atmos streaming video sound wasn't even on the horizon... and now, I have a voice-activate dual speaker system connected to my Apple TV 4K, that I can also stream every Apple device I have into them! PLUS they're a hub for my HomeKit accessories. And the best news...? My pair of HomePods was gifted to me by a user who had no idea of their full capabilities!

All I can say is that the original HomePod is outstanding. I have a pair that I use with Apple TV. I have a HomePod mini by my bed for going to sleep. It’s the quality, Apple makes the best looking, best quality product. Compare the new Apple TV Siri Remote to a Fire Stick remote sometime.

I wish the homepod mini in my country was that cheap, here it is 240$ and it comes with UK charger so buy adaptor separately. I wanted to buy 2 of them but it is really hard to justify the price, because apple products in europe get double taxed.

I have two full-size HomePods and they're all up today and no issue with them although it does take a while for some things to happen when I ask Siri and the original HomePod does kind of like a little bit but it still works and if either of them or both of them break I'll probably get the minis

I wish Apple would release a competitor to the google nest hubs - I have all Apple tech in my house except for the 5 nest hubs as there is no Apple equivalent and it’s nice to have the digital photo frame and video chats etc on the nest hubs.

Many reasons why it failed. And it was all decisions they chose to make. Their biggest competitor was sonos. 1. Could only use two at a time (sonos can use as many as you want) 2. No subwoofer it was really supposed to replace your home music 3. Would only work with Apple music (from when I bought mine at least) you had to airplay the rest, which sonos can do too 4. Couldn't connect them to your TV or even hook up 5.1 5. No sound bar It just doesn't make sense what they were trying to do. Either go after the high end speaker market or don't. Don't sell a speaker that costs more than sonos but does less and sounds the same. In the end they didn't want to compete so they gave up and settled with the mini because it's just a speaker and it isn't high end.

As much as I love and own a full-size HomePod, I kind of see the point. When you can buy three smaller speakers for the price of one large one, which are you picking?

My family has the original homePod, and I think it looks so much better than the Mini, the screen on the original is smooth and connected to the whole thing while the mini is basically a sphere with the top cut off and a screen stuck to it

I feel like for the most part, people want a voice assistant for the functionality of asking things. I barely see people with expensive smart speakers and for a good reason. You can get better speakers in every way if you separate your assistant and speaker. It's a nice concept and I am sure that lots of people are happy with it. But siri and subpar speakers for that price is just meh. At least at release, even Bixby had smarter functionality than Siri.

Unless you went to the Apple store, other stores did not have a demo unit to show off the rich sound. For the price, who is going to take a chance on an expensive speaker.

I’d rather have a og HomePod vs the mini in my opinion the only reason I don’t is due to price and I’d want to have multiple in my apartment if the HomePod was 150 I’d definitely buy them

Actually if memory serves me right, at WWDC 2017, they aimed to compete with Sonos Play:3. Sonos One and Google Home Max didn’t even exist until October 2017 after HomePod was already announced (but not yet shipping). HomePod was to take on The Play:3 and $99 Alexa. You also left out that $50 price drop from Apple in April 2019 and the frequent $199 sales BestBuy and other retailers had to move inventory. Also worth noting that other smart speakers and Wi-Fi streaming speakers like Sonos could play Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, Pandora and more while compatible with iOS and Android. HomePod being limited to Apple Music and iOS devices only surely didn’t help justify $350.

I have the original homepod and somewhat disagree with your analysis, it wasn't the "premium sound doesn't justify it's premium price" issue at all as far as i'm concerned. The quality more than justifies the price, it was the limited ecosystem, homepod has amazing sound but basically can only be used as a speaker for your phone or mac computer or apple tv I.e. if you didn't own at least 2 of these, for some people all 3, it wasn't worth it because it was useless otherwise. And most apple consumers only have 1 apple product, not multiple, usually an iphone or macbook/ipad. Especially when you take into account the duo-pairing and Dolby Atmos sound it would have made for a fantastic home theatre setup, except it only worked if you had apple tv, which itself is a very limited market when compared to the iphone or macs/macbooks. If it had had the possibility to work with regular smart tvs by downloading the apple tv app instead, or even just with smart tvs with integrated homekit or airplay it would have made a world of difference and a more attractive product. I myself purchased only 1 instead of 2 or more because it's limited usecases didn't justify getting more of them and my tv is a premium LG with integrated homekit, I was not going to buy an apple tv just for the sake of using it for for stereo audio, it should have been integrated into homekit compatibility.
