In this video, Brad discusses the importance of micro OLED displays for the Apple Vision Pro and how it compares to other display technologies. He explains that micro OLED displays have the potential to provide higher resolutions and brighter displays than other technologies, which can lead to more immersive and realistic VR experiences. He also mentions the challenges of producing micro OLED displays, such as the need for brighter displays and the limitations of current lithography equipment. Brad believes that as micro OLED technology continues to improve, we can expect even better VR experiences in the future.

We're finally there. Been waiting since the Samsung Odyssey+ for the industry to move back to OLED. Micro-OLED is a dream come true. Have a BSB on order, about to go into production, and have my eye on the Visor, next gen DPVR headset, and Samsung's upcoming headset all later this year. VR has been in a massive lull but I believe this is the next gen that will launch VR to the next stage as mainstream products. Something like Immersed's Visor with controllers and standalone gaming + SteamVR support is really the sort of package that everyone is truly going to want. It's a shame that Visor doesn't come with its own controllers and such support right out of the box. But this is where it's headed in the near future. Should be glorious.

As for now, this is the most thorough vision pro channel, hopefully you will also tell us tips, best apps, ways to have like "emulation or kinda side loading" apps, or new ways to use it, I already have for myself a real world use, I want to try the vision pro on a bed, since ar VR headsets need one to be standing or seating, but not in the bed like we see on anime or movies, so hopefully with this headset that thing will be possible. Also I would love to know if there any data possibility on the battery or the only way to transfer would be airplay and icloud, but I guess we will have to wait until the vision pro launch. Best

People should use megapixels; everyone understands megapixels and its fast. Basic 4k monitor is ~8Mp. Then you can at least understand easily about how much more resolution is there in a 11.5Mp panel that Apple uses.

TVs cannot used MicroOLED due to the fact they are based on Silicon Backplanes. Which max out at 12 inches (300mm). I don't think they need to actually. They are figuring out how to lessen the pixel gap on TVs using other methods which work out for their use case: far distance viewing

The person who has studied and understands, for example, how a computer actually works (from the gate or transistor logic up) is different from a person who uses a computer and has a varying degree of actual understanding. Without a specific requirement, neither is more important in general, mind you but I have witnessed so many self-proclaimed ‘experts’ such as the fellow who admonished you for Apple already having declared the VP resolution of “4K per eye”. Sometimes it’s more important to know what you don’t know than what you do know. Great vid Brad - thanks

"We use the measurement candela, which is another name for nits that everyone uses these days more than candela. Basically it's the same, it's actually directly correlated to lumens...so that's what a nit is, it's the pressure of light rather than the amount of light that's present from the light source." The two parts of this are directly contradictory; the first is incorrect, the second is correct. A nit is the we-got-fed-up-saying-it, informal name for a candela per square meter. The situation is analogous to a pound vs. a psi or a newton vs. a pascal. Luminous intensity, or nits, is important because it's very easy to increase luminance, or candelas - just use more or bigger panels. However, that wrecks the optical properties of HMDs and/or makes them deep/big/heavy/hot. Making higher luminous intensity, nits, requires new tech and allows more brightness in the same system or the same brightness in a better system.

Nice overview! The comment on the current color filter approach makes me wonder what could be achieved with a prototype monochromatic headset.. Also interesting the LED produce white light, maybe it's just a bunch of RGB crammed together or layered? Lastly, with micro lenses to collimate light then a lossy optical assembly to focus it properly, it makes me wonder what the eventual possibilities are with screen tech. I think people have mentioned basically having a micro-array of lasers which just beam directly into your eyes (with appropriate focus) though I am sure there's nothing even close to reality for actually manufacturing something like that, at the moment.

Oh Brad, don't think we didn't catch you in 12:20 teasing the >90% of transmissive holographic lenses. I get why; based on Meta's whitepaper, it needs an exotic light source (lasers, not display panels), so it's a ~10yr future tech. The next step would likely be folded holo (~25%) + RGB uOLED (15k nits). I can see (heh) this w/in 5 years on a slim, HDR standalone by Apple or Meta.

Hey Brad, thanks for another great video! Curious if you might be able to speak more to how the size of the display chip itself and optics all affect perceived field of view as I don't fully understand all this. I tried the Quest 2 back when it came out and felt like I was looking through a tunnel with black borders all around. Based on the specs that are available for the Apple Vision Pro, how do you think the perceived field of view will differ from the Quest 2 or other devices on the market? Do you feel they will be making any major strides in this area? Thanks! :)
@Shiffo
@Shiffo 4 месяца назад
Fov is reported to be smaller than Quest 3. But Quest has a higher Fov than Quest 2 (I believe due to the fact that Quest 3 has a LCD per eye and Quest 2 only one) and maybe because of the pancake lenses.
@hishnash
@hishnash 4 месяца назад
One think about VR resolution that many people forget when compared to TV or phone is that each eye gets an offset image. And the human brain composites both eyes. Do in some ways you can compare 4K per eye to having 2 4K pannels in front of each other with a small offset so you end up with twice the resolution. But the human eye does even more as our brain has some temporal image memory (human TAA) so as you head moves a small amount the extra image jitter you creat adds resolution. Howe this only works if the images you are viewer are rendered correctly. On issue many HMDs have for 2D content (like watching a film or reading text) is they render this out to a single texture and then reproject that texture onto a plane for each eye. Such systems limit this texture target resolution for VRAM and bandwidth reasons. So you end up with artifacts (in particular if your viewing content that is not perpendicular) Vision Pro renders per eye and for UI and text renders foveated. The underlying UI stack apple are using for this is very impressive how they can do variable resolution off axis text rendering per eye without exposing were the user is looking to the application.
@GladlyItsBradley

Yes! Also they're doing absolutely the correct way to do it, as well.

@@GladlyItsBradley yer from a SW perspective they are way ahead of the industry on this. For MR productivity apps all the other headsets more or less force devs to build apps in unity. It is a nightmare or completely if you’re doing anything that is not a game like experience.
