In this video, I’m going to tell you exactly why Apple isn’t putting M1 into the iPhone. Not the current iPhone 13, and not the upcoming iPhone 14 either. iMac, sure. iPad Pro, why the hell not. But iPhone? No. iPhone Pro. No.
So... why not? At the very least, why not the iPhone Pro? It’d give us Thunderbolt, if nothing else, yes? Still no.
And for two main reasons! Let me explain...

I honestly don't ever expect an iPhone to receive any M-Series, at least not for a long while, unless they decide to implement some kind of system or architecture where you essentially dock an iPhone and turn it into a portable Mac running some kind of OS that can dynamically scale and transition from iOS to MacOS depending on if it's docked or not.

The simple fact is the thermal and power tax of a full sized desktop CPU in a phone is not only overkill but a bottleneck in a mobile device. Sure, tablets are more forgiving due to the pure surface area to dissipate heat and clocking tricks to keep the device performant and last long enough, but hell no on a phone unless apple seriously overhall their thermal silicon solution to tackle the power draw and have the battery to keep up.

@@anthonycraig274 it’s too bad, isn’t it? Because this timing mismatch could mean that some other phone chip might get the use of it before Apple this time, as I doubt that even Apple could tell them to not use it when it’s ready considering Apple wouldn’t use it for their new chip until the middle of the year, at the earliest, other than, possibly for their current M1 replacements, which aren’t made in nearly the same numbers. So as an Apple user and shareholder, I hope TSMC won’t be ready for full production until just before Apple can use the chip in large numbers.

@FoxxFire
@FoxxFire 2 года назад
I remember some six or seven years ago the first time I've been roasted for a comment on a youtube video. And oh yeah, it's happened a ton since then lol. But I mentioned how my iPad Air 2 was faster than my Dell XPS 11, especially when browsing the web. The Air 2 as we know had the A8X, which was a generational leap in performance at that time (and the A9X an even bigger leap!), and the XPS 11 had an i5 'y' series processor (i think third or fourth gen). I was told in all caps, 'NO WAY YOUR iPAD IS FASTER THAN A CORE i5!!' This is all to say, many of us did not understand the importance of single core speed (not to mention storage speed) on a device. It's so, so important to the overall feel of 'fast.' That's why a $800 M1 Mac Mini can browse the web faster than the most expensive Mac Pro. This is all to say --- the M1's cores no longer provide the latest and greatest single core speed (nor multicore speed for that matter). I just feel personally, in my own humble opinion, that it would be a disappointment if we get a variant of the M1 in the next iMac Pro. I really hope the 12-core CPU rumor somehow, in some way I don't understand, means the iMac Pro's processor will be a variant of at least the A15. And we know Apple had to stunt the A15, as it did for the A14, in the iPhone due to the requisite cooling which is limited by such a small form factor (and a lack of a great cooling solution, let's be honest). So I think an A15 Turbo, or M2 Pro/Pro Max, will just make we tech fans feel better about our purchase. I know Apple's using, re-using and re-re-using the M1 in different variants is an important cost saving measure, and that this has resulted in the generous pricing we have received as compared to other OEMs, but selfishly, if I'm spending $5,000 for a computer, I really want the bleeding edge of tech, and not something that an Intel furnace (as you so eloquently put it, Rene, lol) beats in multicore, and especially single-core, speed.

@techinrl9869
@techinrl9869 2 года назад
Actually the M1 is a modified A14, not A15. There are no M processors yet based on the A15. We’re only guessing the M2 will be A15 based, or as Rene puts it, if the M2 extends into late 2022, they might be based on the future A16 cores which will be released this September. The clock speeds on the M1 are higher than on the A14 and seemingly match A15 scores because they are in more thermally friendly environments and therefore get about 10-15% higher single core scores.

It makes sense that iPhone would stick with A-series and M-series use a 2-year cadence. Apple needs to do something special with it's graphics cores though. It's being trounced in gaming & pro 3D and whilst this is small in marketshare, the propaganda wars are making it huge in mindshare. Let's hope those G15/G15X cores are packing some magic.
@jimmyjiang3413
@jimmyjiang3413 Год назад
The only way to solve this is to delay iPhone altogether to align with Apple silicon 18-month refresh cycle, so the A16 will be renamed M3 mini, the first in M3 family. It shall be revealed alongside full M3 chip. This is due to the decline of iPhone demand as the silicon bubble resides. They can simply refresh A15 to a higher clock speed this year. So M3 séries chip should be the first to have hardware ray tracing acceleration in the form similar to Neural Engine, call it Ray Engine. Another reason to delay iPhone altogether is both A series and M series share exactly the same core architecture for both GPU and CPU. What I want for iPhone is to ditch efficiency core altogether as big cores are getting even more efficient, leaving 4 big cores only for iPhone. In regards of M series, the Mx Max chip should ditch efficiency cores altogether in favor of 16 big cores only to differentiate Mx Pro chips.
@melgross
@melgross 2 года назад
Ok, I can agree with almost everything you said-except for one thing. You tried to dismiss it at the very beginning. But really, weren’t successful. That is, Thunderbolt, or equivalent. I’ve been a big supporter of Lightning over USB C for the iPhone for several years now. But its time is now past, and Apple killed the last reason why it might still be viable. The lack of a need for high speed transfer. With the introduction of the various versions of Pro Rez for the iPhone, I can testify that there is right now, no viable way to get that off the phone in any reasonable amount of time. Sure, if you’re willing to let go of the phone for hours at a time while it transfers the data over, then yes, be that masochist. But most of aren’t willing to be. It’s not though I’m the only one commenting on this problem either. So, Apple needs to eliminate that bottleneck, which, even you have in other places, admitted exists. But you stayed away from that problem here. I would imagine, deliberately. But it won’t go away. We NEED much higher transfer speeds. Speeds that every Mac and iPad user can utilize, and even those Windows users who might want to do it (after all, the large majority of iPhone owners ARE Windows users!). This needs to addressed in the iPhone 14. So a chip that includes one Thunderbolt controller, or something else with a true high speed rate has to be included. Look, Apple themselves has now set us upon this road of expectations. They’ve disappointed us before by starting down a path and abandoning it. I hope they don’t do it again.
@ReneRitchie
@ReneRitchie 2 года назад
I did a separate video on that. I'd love Thunderbolt on the iPhone Pro, but it wouldn't take M1/M2 to do it. Just surface a PCIe lane and add a Thunderbolt controller. What that does to internal volume and power draw... is something else.
@melgross
@melgross 2 года назад
@@ReneRitchie that’s why having an onboard controller does eliminate those problems, as we’ve seen for the M1. Packaging can easily take up much more area than the chip itself, as as we’ve seen in the Apple supplied chip micro photos this year. The Thunderbolt controllers didn’t take up much room at all. Apparently, neither did they consume much power or radiate much heat. As I said, Apple does t have to have Thunderbolt, though it would be the most sophisticated, and versatile so,Union. But they do need to increase transfer speeds by an order of magnitude. And soon. And since we/re talking about transfer speeds and therefore, by extension, connectors. What I would like to see is a connector with pads on the outside of the case, without any internal connector housing that would connect to a cable using a MagSafe type connector. It doesn’t have to be more than two tiny magnets on either side of those pads. When the cable is brought near, it makes contact and aligns the cable. Therefor we would have the best of all worlds, no internal connector taking room and making water resistance more difficult, a positive mechanical electrical contact, and a reversible connector that the magnets would ensure works properly. All done on the outside of the case.

@Sacto1654 2 года назад
The answer is absolutely *NO* . Reason: battery size limitations and heat dissipation, even if the iPhone 14 goes with vapor chamber cooling. They'll use the A16 with the possible CPU cores derived from the ARMv9 design.
@ReneRitchie
@ReneRitchie 2 года назад
ARMv9 won't mean much to Apple. ARMv8/64 was basically an Apple ISA and since then they've been going their own way. ARMv9 will mostly reverse-engineer and standardize Apple-style iterations for other ARM licensees. The vector stuff will be nice, but I'm not getting my hopes up for much else. Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 has a performance close to A14 but the wattage is close to M1, so M1 in an iPhone is technically doable lol

2 issues, iPhones have much smaller batteries than Android smartphones and still have similar or better battery life, put a Snapdragon into an iPhone and you lose that advantage... Second, it's not just wattage, it's heat. There is so little room in a smartphone (let alone no fan) that when you put that much heat it will throttle immediately, making the additional power only theoretical... It's like making a Mac mini the size of an external SSD, it would just throttle like crazy (the iPhone with A15 already throttles....), especially without a fan...

@@_Digitalguy ...and third, do we need much more power in smartphones anymore? The A15 and SD8G1 just had about 5% extra benchmarks suggesting that power may not be number one when designing new iPhone chips. Better thermal and efficiency, for battery life, should maybe be priority as we move forward?

@@andyH_England Absolutely Andy, iPhone performance is already plenty. I have no doubt most people would trade more battery life for slightly less performance (A12 performance is already plenty and is roughly on par with current Qualcomm chips...) By the way, single core performance of A15 is already higher than M1 and that's what can be perceived more easily in terms of smartphone snappiness rather than the multicore advantage of M1, since iPhone cannot multitask much

Apple A16 processor exposure: 4nm process, CPU single core upgrade back to 20%+ Sep 26, 2021 in Apple, News, Tech Gaint 0 Apple A16 Bionic Processor Exposed: What Are The Details ! (image credit : TechnoSports) Performance of the A15 Bionic Processor on the iPhone 13 is average. The GB5 CPU single core is around 9% faster than the A14 due to an increase in main frequency of 8%. Furthermore, multi-core is 15% quicker than single-core. GPU performance is uncompromised, the version with 5 cores showing a 38 percent gain in overall performance. Apple has lost A-series chip team executives in the last two years. As a result, the CPU design of the A14 Bionic and A15 Bionic CPUs is nearly identical. The Apple A16 Bionic chip is slated to undergo core replacement at this level. According to reports, the A16 bionic chip is manufactured using TSMC’s 4nm process. Larger CPU cores are upgraded to Avalanche, while smaller cores (efficiency cores) are upgraded to Blizzard. Process-level transistor advancements are limited. These are the replacements for the A14 Bionic Firestorm + Icestorm and A15 Bionic Firestorm + Icestorm combos, respectively. Until to the A13 Bionic, each iteration of Apple’s A-series processors saw a 20 percent increase in single-core performance. Starting with the Apple A16 Bionic chip, similar advancements are predicted. Despite the fact that the A15 processor has 27% more transistors than the A14, the transistor density (number of transistors per square millimeter) under the N5P (5nm enhanced version) has only increased by 1%, according to agency calculations. ADDITIONALS → The 4nm Process To Be Used In The Apple A16 Bionic. Apple’s iPhone 12 series smartphones were the company’s first to have 5nm CPUs. At the same time, network sources claim that the company is already planning a technical process improvement for future new items. Experts from the analytical firm Trend Force stated this in a recent study, naming the projected release dates for the first American-branded chips made utilizing the 4nm manufacturing technology. The report also includes an estimate for 2022, when Apple is expected to convert to 4-nanometer technology for producing microcircuits at a Taiwanese chipmaker’s facilities. The Apple A16 Bionic will be the first CPU of the new generation. It’s probable that the ARM family of Apple M1 CPUs for laptops will see similar improvements

Rene, I’m really sorry to be annoying and I know it’s one of your favorite mannerisms, but this has been bugging me. If they shipped a new iphone “every year, on the year,” it would be shipping on January first. “Every hour on the hour” means at the top of the hour. So “every year on the year” would imply at the beginning of the year. Or at the very least, at the same time each year. Which is not always true, they don’t always ship things at consitantly the same time every year. So it’s not “on the year,” it’s just every year. Thank you for indulging my pedantry.
