The portrayal of wealthy Chinese individuals mirrors the fishbowl phenomenon. Essentially, Chinese people are experiencing a phase of wealth stabilization and self-awareness similar to what Westerners have already gone through. In time, they'll become just as concerned about organic food and plastic cups as yoga moms were in the West a decade ago.
That and a lot of the "luxury" brands that slap their logo on all their merch have damaged their reputation and no longer signal luxury like they are supposed to. The other day I saw a homeless woman (admittedly she was at a homeless shelter not living on the street) with a Luis Vuitton bag. I see my co-workers who I know aren't secretly wealthy because they wouldn't be working a low paying relatively dead end job with supposedly luxury bags too. In order to differentiate themselves from the mass-market "luxury" brands the ones still trying to maintain their reputation and exclusivity are dropping their labels.
There used to be a time when if you wore a tee shirt provided by a brand for free, you would be considered a walking billboard. Worst is when you pay so much to be their advertisers. Glad people are slowly waking up to their senses.😊
I grew up thinking that those logo shirts are free from the store😂😂😂. My mom bought me a fake Gucci shirt when i was young and I refuse to wear it thinking that its a free from the store. 😅😅
Soon Chinese parents will look at their children at dinner time and say : "If you don't study hard, you will only be able to drive a Mercedes-Benz and a BMW in the future."
BMW and Mercedes aint luxury brands in China anymore. Every Chinese knows those German cars are so tech outdated than any Chinese EV. Buying Mercedes and Benz is kind for stupid people with too much money that they dont know what to do with it. Rich people dont drive, thats why Huawei Aito M9 is specially designed for those people who sit back with a movie on big screen
In fact, minimally desirable women in Shanghai have been known to skip BMW drivers for being poor. Porsche is the passing grade. If you don't own a Porsche or Bentley/Aston/Ferrari/Lambo/Rolls, you aren't even qualified for a date with these women who are above 6.
Hahaha that’s not how it works. They still want to show off their worth. The vibe kinda like hey I’m rich but I don’t wanna show that I’m rich. But I am. But I am not actively trying to show it off. But. I am lmao
The luxury is more than just the name , it also means higher quality materials(and more fabric)...cashmere is gonna feel much nicer than unprocessed wool that scratches your skin. The future is gonna be opposite of skimpy clothing because fabric will be very expensive so the more fabric on your body: the richer you are.
Yes, I felt that when I was in China recent times, people more look for the quality of textile, comfort and tech of cloth, something as simple as no edge underwear ( the edge and label all gone because the extra skin rub discomfort from them)
@@ondreiii no need to have substitute chinese can live without luxury brand. china accounted for 30% of the world market for luxury brand. its a loss for them not china.
I get buying for quality and durability. Never understood the need to impress others. People who treat you differently because of what you have on are not worthy of your judgment, imo.
I always mix and match. I'll wear a Louis Vuitton sweater $4000 with pair of jeans from Levis that was purchased on sale $29.99. I bought my first and only Rolex watch when I was 24....now 57, I still wear the same watch. And I have never bought any other watch, not even an Apple watch. I like designer clothes but also shop discounted items too.
China with the population of 1.5 billion has 969 billionaires is not more than US which only have 350 million people yet 691 billionaires. If you switch over to percentage.
@@macolet9711 Poor in China is not the same as poor in America or the rest of the world for that matter. They still have high quality homes, high quality infrastructure, cheap price of living, and have good future prospects. America cannot say the same with our homelessness crisis, drug epidemic, and worsening economy.
@@macolet9711haven't you seen how the bus/train stations look like in the US compared to most Asian countries? The US looks like a third world country. Not to mention how many homeless and trash on the streets. Or the crime rates, even legally accepted to "take" items from shops without getting any consequences, as long as you don't over limit... That's never been happened else where and only shows how ragedy the socio-economy situation in USA
To people in the comment who said the anchor has good Mandarin pronunciation: guys, this is Channel News Asia, a Singaporean news channel, so of course many people there have no problem with pronouncing Chinese words.
@@NeidlichesSchwert Speaking of education, I wonder if your students can beat Chinese students in international math or physics competitions. Oh you also want to say universal education, poor people in China can not afford to go to school, sorry, China is 9 years of compulsory education, is an individual to go to school, more than 10 million college graduates every year, let me see what country you are, look down on Chinese education
Hahahaha... It's not just the Chinese who are trending that way. It should be made a norm rather than a trend. Loud luxury is more than ugly. It is downright socially disruptive.
most singaporean billionaire and millionaire do this, unless you know the quality of the garment they use, you will not know what they wear can cost $70,000 usd just for a single shirt, or a leather shoes that they wear casually was specifically custom made in england because human left and right feet are not exactly the same, which can cost around $250,000 usd per pair.
Stupid to pay afew thousand dollars or even afew hundred only to make the owners of these lux brands already billionaires into trillionaires & yourself much poorer😢
Yeah right, the rampant laundering in Singapore was never ever discussed but swept under the disguise of MFO, SFO... what investments when their monies obviously do not have tangible benefits to SG's economy. The topic discussed here is an irony and irrelevant. Who cares about these Chinese people going luxury or not... any sane local should know better about their behaviour and intention. Stay classy even if you are wealthy., class is not bought by monogram logo shirts or Rolls Royce.
Billion dollar insight. People buy luxury that they can wear to feel good when showing off. It’s hard to tell the difference between real and fakes unless with specialist equipment or trained professional eyes. Pivotal. How do you wear land or property deed titles or tell others you own this land or that property so they know at a glance that you are ultra rich and not pretend rich?
You didn’t read news? Chinese government has recently banned accounts due to their ostentatious show of luxury wealth. It’s a sign that showing wealth is a no no now. 😂
1 billion is a lot of money, that's a thousand million, let alone 691 of them in the states.. there's suckers and there's people who builds wealth & riches off suckers
Chinese are used to wealth now & beyond showing off, this is related to a shift from flashy western brands. Now it’s period of real growth of technology
The talk about quiet luxury and art/luxury collectibles are totally 2 different concepts. I do not mix these 2 together. The motivation to obtain these are not the same. If I spend money on quiet luxury items, I treat it as sunk cost.
Asians seem more clueless about this distinction than westerners in my experience, especially the Chinese. Quiet luxury is an exaggerated 'trend' anyway.
Then when everyone bandwagons onto to trying to look quiet luxury, market sales go up due to new trends. Then many years later loud luxury pieces will come back, and everyone will be like "ouu it's so bold and daring", then repeat the trend cycle and spike sales again
Don’t forget the sourgrapes, cynical community too. They are everywhere especially in the comment sections. They couldn’t mind their own business most of the time. 😂
After I bought a $10 million luxury item and I want to resell the same undamaged “second hand” item the next day, people only buy it for less than $5 million dollars, don’t I make a loss of $5 million+? Luxury cars and luxury retail items are known since ancient times not to give birth to future new or more money.
Because they have luxury properties costing tens, if not hundreds of millions, in the worlds top destinations. They own custom leather shoes and bags in limited edition from the world’s top brands. They own items in exotic skin. They have super cars, haute couture clothing, luxury fine jewellery from the world’s top jewellers and they have global influence due to their pedigree. They know who’s who in every top city. They’ve worn logos when they were young. They own plenty of logos. They eat at Michelin star restaurants. They have dreamy weddings. They have private jets and yachts. They have friends who have the same or much more. Everyone always knows how crazy wealthy they are. It’s been established for decades. Its obvious. They could wear plain white for £5000 and they’d still nail it. No one would suspect that their plain white outfit for £5000 is cheap because it won’t be. They couldn’t do it when it hadn’t been established how well off they are. This only applies to a certain segment of society. 99% of people can’t get away with this.
China is doing fine, thank you. The official PMI covers a lot of 4th rung areas and semi rural industries as well, and these have been in decline since forever as people migrated to the coastal and larger interior cities. The Caixin index's strength is a reflection of that. China's GDP is almost certainly growing faster than the country you are from, still.
CNA running cover for the fact that Chinese disposable income and spending is plummeting. "Chinese are not broke. They're just intentionally buying less luxury goods". Lol..sure
The younger Chinese generation starting to display their“ Confidence” based upon their own “style” of luxury, instead, being blindely following the “Foreign” trend defined by the west.
I almost came for you if you said that *gtdupe* was worth the money. LOL. I mean worth the money is relative. If I had heaps of money and could buy that bag, it could be worth it to me. I love this video. Great information and agree with your choices. Love that little orange Alma. So cute and it's in the BEST COLOR.
Real quiet luxury is being 42 walking down Wukang Road in Shanghai and having social media vloggers stop you for interviews due to your bulging delts and visible 6 pack through a shirt that cost 30 rmb on Taobao.
Nothing we can do about fakes…I could care less how many people have the same bag as myself…that makes it really spoken for.. I hate when people say they don’t want a certain purse because everyone has it….well everyone has a hole are we gonna get rid of ours because of that? Everyone one does something different with their niceshopx for example their style, your style will set you apart.
Then eventually no one will wear brands because everyone will want people to think that they’re all into quiet luxury and the rich will start being flashy again ad infinitum 😂 It’s like how British upper class stopped using spices when it became cheap but hoarded it when it was rare and expensive. People are such silly beans.
The interviews completely got sidetracked from the original point of topic. Not only were the wrong people interviewed, no further discussions about the quiet luxury trend were ever asked. Very bad and confusing journalism.
