Have you ever wondered why Chinese strokes are important? Chinese strokes help us write the characters faster and easier. The shape and movement of the pen can also help you read someone else’s handwriting.
There are three main reasons why Chinese strokes are important:
1) It helps you remember the characters
2) It helps reduce errors
3) It builds muscle memory
In general, in Chinese, we write characters in the following way:
-From top to bottom and left to right
-Horizontal before vertical
-Diagonals right-to-left before diagonals left-to-right
-Enclosures before content
As you are considering why Chinese strokes are important, you might feel like you are conforming but you could always add your personal style without you having to compromise on the structure.
There will be some exceptions where natives write using a different stroke order than the dictionary recommends. See more about those and what to do in the video above.
