UPDATE: Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat announced on Jan 22 that commuters will no longer be made to switch to the SimplyGo payment platform. This reverses an earlier decision to phase out the EZ-link and NETS FlashPay ticketing system.

Commuters have expressed frustration since the Land Transport Authority announced that EZ-Link and NETS FlashPay cards cannot be used on buses and trains from June. Why is there a shift to the SimplyGo system? What is the difference in payment types? And what could the authorities do better to communicate the change?
Steven Chia gets answers from Sumit Agarwal, professor at the School of Business at the National University of Singapore and Walter Theseira, who heads the urban transportation programme at the Singapore University of Social Sciences.

The expert has the cheek to tell us, "Why do you need to check everytime you go into the bus how much was deducted?" Of course when people pay for something, we need to know how much it costs! That is our right

The users should be the one writing the specifications... My requirements are rather simple... Able to see cost per trip and the remaining values... The rest you can do anything you like

Isn't that the purpose of having an app that you could see every transaction that is being deducted? Besides if you are being deducted incorrectly can you really make a claim on the spot with the bus driver?

@@ClaraFlater_than_surface_board Actually my biggest gripe with simplygo system is that it just shows the simplygo word when someone tap out. So if there are multiple people rushing to tap out, there is no good way to identify if u have tapped out successfully, if u tap while the simplygo word is still displaying, because it will just continue showing the same message. Last time showing balance, the moment u see your balance u know u successfully tapped out. It is too easy to not tap out successfully and get overcharge under the new system.

Checking for the balance amount is far more than curiosity. This is daily life for most. Not everyone has the luxury of not needing to check how much they have spent every time. Please consider inviting not only the experts but the commuters to have a more balanced session.

Public sector organisations are seemingly becoming more imposing , disregarding customer/citizen concerns /needs/perceptions. Never forget the law of unintended consequences when implementing policies . Managing change requires deep analysis of the pitfalls and the stumbling blocks and requires a people-oriented mindset, not imposing change by fiat.

They are highly educated and most of them probably drive, so they don’t understand the needs of many lower income Singaporeans who commute daily by public transport. They just want to show their bosses and the ministers how smart they are.

They sound like clowns but their behavior is due to poor accountability. If they will lose their jobs they will be more receptive to make efforts understand the commuters are the customers/ users. But these people have no sense of being accountable cos they will able to keep their jobs. That's the crux of the matter

It is wrong to say tourists prefer SimplyGo, if you watch some of their vlogs on RU-vid. True, in the beginning they are amazed that they can use their own cc to pay for the fares, but that soon turned into disappointment when they realised they don't know how much they were charged, especially when they are in a foreign land and are not familiar with the fare structure. So they have no way to make comparison of the amount spent for the various transport modes. Some only find out when they are back in their country and received their cc bills. As such, some prefer to purchase the tourist pass, as it is more transparent.

You know Steve, there's an issue that is not mentioned. What will happen to the elderly when they are going to take bus and there's insufficient amount to even allow them to board it and get to the nearest station to top up. Can the bus driver then practise flexibility to let them get on? When that happens, it might seem relatively easy for majority of us to quickly link the credit card/ bank card to the app to top up our simplygo card. But to these elderly, it becomes a mission impossible because they don't know how to use the app or even have the app in their phone.

Exactly! I was waiting for this point to be raised! It's a real point of anxiety for some. There might not be enough money on the card to pay a bus fare. People don't want to board a bus and then find they can't pay. MRT fare not such a problem...can always top up at the machine.

Yes it's very frustrating when your cars has insufficient funds and the BUS DRIVER refuse to let you board the bus. It's so frustrating when the fare (64cents) can easily be recovered when we top up our cards. I had the misfortune to meet on Bus 222 a grouchy old man driver. Please tell your driver be more understanding

Two main issues~ 1. If you top up the Simply Go card, the amount doesn't get immediately updated in the card. 2. I can't see how much is left in the card.. Yes. Instantaneously. 3. Not user friendly to Older folks. Issues are Simply these. Inconveniences

After having your meals at a restaurant, when paying your bill at the counter, do you guys check how much you're paying? Is it simply out of human nature that we're curious about how much we're paying? Or could it simply be just the logical thing to do. I sure wouldn't hand over my wallet to the cashier and expect him or her to take the right amount of money and not double check. Let's be real. If it's simply go, why even pay? Get rid of those gantry. If 1 second of having our cash balance displayed is such a huge delay using the current system that they intend to "upgrade" to a system that requires a specialized app just to check our balance. I guess removing the payment altogether would ensure simply go to live up to it's expectation. No need to check balance if we don't even need to pause to pay.

These app update every week is something programmer in early days don't dare to imagine. There was a saying, every fix create more bugs, loopholes. Told dbs 10years every year the danger, until that issues happened, then now laws are going to pass that we share the responsibility.........what a "quick and ease fix"🤦.

I think LTA should remind themselves that such a nationwide move should be done through a referendum. They have no right to coerce the citizens into something they do not want. People paid for EZ-Link, so they should let them use it until the card cannot be used anymore. If they wanted to use SimplyGo, they would have used it a long time ago.

I personally don’t like to link my transport charges to my account. People use it very often the probability of losing the card is high. More work to report to police and call the banks to stop the account

The fact that LTA and PTC did not send any representative to this podcasts says it out. If simplygo is a good system, cant they send their comms people to explain and dispel people's perception of simplygo. Thats a lost opportunity on them, a shame though.

LTA never ever listen to the ground whenever they implement changes. LTA simply "think" they had made a choice that everyone "love". Never once LTA had done any survey when changes are made irregardless whether it is road work or system. Our leaders had mentioned dozen times that public servant must listen and understand the ground need. LTA had failed to do so.

I don't see the purpose of this episode, really. Is CNA just doing something that needs to be seen to? You have the wrong guests on - both aren't the ordinary man-on-the-street who uses public transport on a daily basis, and are only offering opposition to the decision based on what they have read and heard. At the end of the day, what I hear from this episode is: you guys are just overreacting. Us elites think it's a good system so just learn to live with it in due time. There's no real deliberation of what they can learn from the feedback from the general public and a relook at the system in itself and how it was pushed out.

Where do we begin? Ah... the High and Mighty LTA. Policymakers who NEVER ride a bus to go to work. People who couldn't care less what the layman thinks or wants but does everything in their own interests in the name of profitability and "advancement". Just look at the new buses to begin with. Bus after bus with people crowding in the front, refusing to go to the back because surprise, surprise... the exit door is way up front. Buses these days have such limited seats while the design of the front of the bus has been designed with big sections that cannot even be sat or stood on. And all this time they're increasing fares for what? So, BIG surprise that they feel no need to hear what consumers want. So showing the SimplyGo logo upon going up and down the bus is supposed to do what? Marketing. Without displaying fares, they can make people spend without knowing so they can "earn more". Marketing. How brilliant. And they expect our complaints to go "quietly into the night". And we've not even begun to mention about the frequency of bus arrivals. LTA officials deserve to be slapped left right and centre.

So true, the LTA decide the new decision. Without even knowing the effects aftermath. But the people that SUFFERED THE MOST IS US ..the citizens. HOW COULD U BE SO CARELESS. It so easy of u LTA to fine the people who park Wrong places. WELL, HOW ABOUT THIS?? THAT BEING GOING ON SINCE LAST YEAR. I petty the SMRT staff who got nasty remarks from commuters. The LTA planners seem to have forgotten one of the most important condition when planning- To consult different groups of consumers to understand their needs and considerations before implementing it. If your fare-changing system is reliable in the first place, people would be more willing to trust your system.

We prefer the WALLET card - a STORED VALUE card - cos if I lose it, the loss is LIMITED! Hackers cannot steal from the LINKED account, because there isn’t one.

The post office scandal in UK is a good lesson that technology is not always trustworthy. Citizens should have the right to choose the way to pay. At least LTA should have a more complete info pack for citizens, eg what should they do if the card is lost? How should i give transport money to my children if no more cash card? How about the foreign workers who dont have credit card and dont use their bank account?

Ceo of LTA ng lang should be held responsible for the unplanned proper migration of cards.. Obviously LTA didn't aware that in the past, smrt cards were always over charged us without our notice. Simply the ceo of LTA and smrt don't have ezlink card before as they drive.

I often go to Singapore for holiday and events. I'd like to throw in my opinion, I agree with most people here the switch is arse. As a tourist I want to see the fare, like it's just in budgeting to know.

At the very least, this episode already shows that there is a very significant disconnect between the policymakers and the people who are affected by those policies. I am one of those who monitor my transport spending quite closely every month for budgeting purposes, for money is not unlimited. I would certainly wish it were so, but it is not in my case. Hence, I need to keep my spending to a particular amount each month. SimplyGo simply doesnt allow it at this stage. If it can report how much each ride costs, that would be a more convincing proposition.

I've said before, Singapore is runned like a company that maximizes financial profit and minimizes financial losses. "SimplyGo" is a progress to have higher profits while minimizing operational costs. The inconvenience that citizens have to deal with are considered externalities that doesn't affect the PnL. The painful truth is that Singapore citizens are NOT the profit-generating clients/consumers. The real profit-generating clients/consumers are MNCs, expats, the branding of Singapore and it's standing in the world arena. So naturally, they wouldn't care about nor take in consideration the feedback from the users.

Showing how much the supermarkets have saved on plastic bags since the implementation is just an indication of how much the supermarkets can see their profits increase. Why no survey whether ppl have to resort to buying plastic bags from shops (more economical than paying 5cts or 10cts per bag)? Did we really use lesser plastic bags?

Yes. This is what I thought so too. There must a number of anonymous ez-link holders causing untraceable loose-ends to transport transactions (can't connect to other system transactions). The cost and gantry delay reasons are stupid la. Look at developing countries like Japan, Seoul with much more commuters than us. Was cost even a consideration to get rid of balance checks? Another reason given was that it delays entry by few seconds. Who the hell thinks that few seconds delay matters? Even if the gantry processes the charge in nano-seconds, it will still take a few seconds for the gantry gate to open and close + commuter to walk through. The few seconds system processing speed is not a bottleneck unless we are using RFID+gateless entry technology. The official reasons are all so dumb that it makes me wonder the real hidden reason: track identify+movement.

Another relevant podcast addressing current issues. Some brief comments: - I like how Walter does not avoid his personal “responsibility” as probably a consultant or advisor to the “clumsy” transition exercise; - Walter has also highlighted what policymakers often overlooked and/or erroneously assumed which LTA fail to factor; - regardless whether SimplyGo is a better more flexible payment system than the legacy system, IMO, quite obviously this was an implementation boo-boo; • failure to appreciate the emotional importance/attachment to realtime fare information; • management of change resistant and the time & communication necessary to alleviate it; • training of ground/frontline staff to respond/assist/explain the purpose and how-to of the exercise; • underestimating or forgetting how critical and unforgiving Singapore customers are/can be. Sadly another LTA crash.

When using the old system I always had issues finding places to top up my card. Now I can top up whenever, where ever even before the bus arrive. Last time when I realise I lack of value in the card when getting in the bus and can't pay I have to get down find a place to top up and take the next bus even more inefficient. Now can top up from phone and also check value from phone. You check value at gantry, even when the gantry tell people low value, how many people remember to top up after they reach their destination, most just forget then last min have to backtrack find machine top up hold up the queue at mrt gantry. With phone app, can implement if card low value send notifications to top up. Yes it slightly complicated at the start all things are, you think when smart phone just invented, setting up was not complicated? If because things more complicated you don't use, if that is so now we still using phone with small screen with number pad. Nowadays I see old uncle aunties play games on phone, watch their shows and blast music. If they can do all these things on their phone, using simplygo app on phone is not complicated at all.

They are also advance but it gives tourist choice to use cash and pay for single trip tickets. What all these about simply go. It’s not going to work. Give options. Try harder for the lobbying. Apart from budgeting, even in the new system especially in the context of credit card billing, there is no breakdown for each rides. It’s a lump sum posting in credit card statement which hard to know how many rides did I take vs how much I meant to pay.

Imagine if you loose the new card. You may need to log a police report, call or raise request to block and replace a new card, and raise disputes for unauthorised trips. Whoever picks up the lost card, may use it for free transportation trips.

Not true with the simplygo app you can block it immediately within 30 minutes and transfer the value to a new card while blocking the old card takes up to 48 hours since the value is stored within the card itself and it'll probably be used by then.

However, to an elderly who may not be so digital savvy may not be able to do the block and replacement. Some will depend on their family members to assist. Side note, is the block immediate? If block is within 30 minutes, does it means the block is not really immediate and during that period, any possible misuse may happen? The FAQ not very clear on that part. Some queries is a need to be clear for commuters. If no phone, and lost card during after office hours, the person can only leave a voice mail for ezlink to call back.

I believe the public shd has a right to choose if they want to use simplygo or not and not make it mandatory. the most irritating part for simplygo is that we can't see the fare deduction for the journey, can't see the balance and worst they deduct in one go for several transactions. I have one foot in each group of people that the professor talked about......lol. And it's not just a case of curiosity that I want to know how much was deducted or how much I've spent on public transport. Is technology perfect? Is it foolproof? No, it's hackable, it can make mistakes too. I remember a time when the system had an error and commuters were deducted the wrong fare. If you didn't know your fare was wrong at the time of tapping, would you know a few days later when the authorities announce that there was an error on a certain date at a certain time and that affected travellers can approach them for refunds? Plus, if the money is stored in my card, no one can hack the system to steal my money. If I lose the card, that's on me for not handling the card more carefully. That's our personal responsibility anyway. And, it works for people who are in the habit of budgeting their expenses. When you make $1000-$2000 a month, you want to know where every dollar goes. When you make above $7500 a month, you're less concerned about how much you pay for the lower costs stuff.

I don't support simplygo because im the type that is on the budget side, and control the amount, i rely totally on public transport. On the side note, what about the workplaces that has one company card to use, it is hard to tell how much balance or need to top up or not because one card is being shared among different colleagues. It has become more troublesome.

The issue is simply about TRANSPARENCY and FEEDBACKS. Whether it’s traveling consumers wanting to have INSTANT information at their fingertips OR Employees wanting to know their past daily clocking in time from a facial or fingerprint clock in machine. if you are not reminded how much is left, u will forget to topup. and ppl will get stuck trying to board the ride. this is why bus always remind ppl to topup when low value. and more ppl will jam up top up machine to check value. this is a case where decision makers prioritize the convienence of one group over the other. maybe one day we dont have paper money because of the same argument

What if you're not so tech savvy, you were robbed in a foreign country. How then should you cancel your card deductions from stolen cards or stolen phone? Poor thing would have a heart attack when he reaches home... someone would have simply go around spending free rides before you can alert the various card companies.
