Why Are Companies Posting "Ghost Jobs"

The rise of ghost jobs, or fake job listings, has become a growing concern in the U.S. job market. In 2024, it was revealed that 40% of American companies posted such listings, with an alarming 8 out of 10 recruiters admitting to this practice. Ghost jobs are job listings that companies have no immediate intention of filling, creating a false perception of opportunities. Estimates suggest that half of all job postings could be ghost jobs, contributing to confusion and frustration among job seekers.
One reason companies post these listings is to build a talent pool for future hires. Others use them as a strategy to project growth or conduct market research. While these listings are not outright scams, they deceive candidates into applying for non-existent positions. This practice harms job seekers, wasting their time and effort, and distorts employment data, making the labor market appear healthier than it actually is.
This growing trend highlights the disconnect between job data and the real struggles of workers. Addressing ghost jobs requires more transparency from companies and job platforms to prevent further erosion of trust in the job search process.

There should be a system for this where companies would be afraid to draw attentions to themselves like this… Government workers should be thinking like a detective and a lawyer going at this with the mindset of “What else are they lying about?” It will be different for each company, but they might be able to make them pay more taxes or cut undeserved supports. Company’s worth/size → total numbers of employees → average work hours → average wages + average annual salaries → numbers of new hiring + numbers of employee firing/leaving → company profits…etc

What scares me is someone out there looking for a job is going to kill themselves because they never heard back.

What they fail to mention is the mental health impacts it has with consistently being ghosted or rejected especially when you're starting your career out and you have no contacts whatsoever.

Posting “ghost jobs” should be illegal because if it is used by companies to boost investor confidence in growth then the act is deceptive and can deemed as market manipulation.

Not normally a gov. intervention fan... but this is too important to our economic and quite fankly, our psychological health. We need some regulation and oversight of the 'recruitment industry'. It should really be a concern of the SEC (for pub traded entities) at the very least...

I know of 3 concrete companies that constantly spam job postings because they pay the lowest lol. They aren't real job openings because nobody wants to work for that low.

Many companies do it so they can see how low of a salary they can offer for a role and still get applicants. Don't fall for it!

I applied for two jobs that were backdated about four or five months which I found suspicious because the job requirements weren't supermassive just to give you an idea it was education-related and the pay was between $50 and maybe close to 60 a year so it wasn't like you know you had to have like a PhD or you know 20 years of experience I was wondering what was up with that

There should be a data to show many job listing - hiring - how long a job posting is posted etc
@2livenoob
@2livenoob День назад
There is nothing you can do about it because its not technically a fake job. They need 10 people for the job so they hire 9 and put one more job posting out there. That one job posting racks up hundreds, thousands of applicants. They can take their sweet time blowing off thousands to find the most genius, talented, robotic hire for that "last" position. Then they repeat that process 9 more times and lay the first nine off.

Constantly complaining about what the companies are doing isn't going to change anything. Start complaining to your government so laws can change and change fast.
