The workers in my country Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 are mostly fighting for $10.50 an hour however many are not even making more than the federal minimum wage of $7.25. Our cost of living is one of the highest compared to states in the United States.
Still do, if they aren't paying a livable wage, then they are exploiting the community for their profit, wage slavery is just more civilly acceptable slavery because it focuses the blame on the merits of labor, and not on the exploitative capitalist.
In fact early writers on capitalism said explicitly that it was best to keep workers poor and hungry because they would work harder. Here's a nice quote from a writer Rev Joseph Townsend on the nature of workers. "Hunger will tame the fiercest animals, it will teach decency and civility, obedience and subjection, to the most brutish, the most obstinate, and the most perverse. . . . In general it is only hunger which can spur and goad them on to labour; yet our laws have said, they shall never hunger. The laws, it must be confessed, have likewise said that they shall be compelled to work. But then legal constraint is attended with too much trouble, violence, and noise . . . whereas hunger is not only a peaceable, silent, unremitted pressure, but, as the most natural motive to industry and labour, it calls forth the most powerful exertions;" This logic is still in the minds of capitalists now. Indeed you hear echos of this rhetoric in the politics of the right, declared openly.

I wish I could think of these of what to say when people complain around me about the $15 wage cuz I would like to say to them next time you don't have problems with bezos being a multi-billionaire. But yet you've got a problem with the average working person making a living wage. Give me a break

There was a time when US workers recognized this. I remember a job I used to have, working in the bowels of a major corporation HQ in their copy center. The execs all drove rather drab, green Jeep Cherokee Chiefs to work each day and parked underneath the building in the heated garage reserved for them. I remember asking a co-worker why the execs didn't drive nicer cars. He recalled that every time they would drive into work in one of their Ferrari/Porsche/Lamborghini cars, etc, they would find at the end of the day their car covered in battery acid. I remember making a good wage at that company but I also remember, years later, how my own coworkers voted for the executive board's recommendation to move our retirements into the company's common stock. That didn't work out too well in the long term, lol. Gone up in smoke is an understatement.
$20/hour for some workers, but not most and not all workers. My County paid caregiver isn't making that and she is a great worker and helps me survive at home.
If they are, it's likely because minimum wage hasn't grown in tandem with things like rent and other necessities for 16 YEARS. Almost 5 million workers today (1.3% of 330 million people) in the US earn this or less than (tipped get $4/hr). The problem is not workers not doing their jobs but the neoliberal economic BS that exploits labor resources in exchange for cheep goods. Don't you believe that all workers should be paid a living wage, one that allows them to afford shelter? Utilities? healthful food? for themselves and their families? Family Farms have been destroyed by the likes of Cargill, not minimum wages.
You can't just up the minimum wage. You need to give people that have been working for 30 years already a raise too. Not just billionaires and millionaires, or just people at the bottom. minimum wage workers deserve it and we all do that work for a living.
Developers and landlords are allowed to charge whatever they want for rent. The more money they get, the more property taxes local and state governments collect, and the more insurance companies charge for policies. None of these businesses run the economy. It's workers, whom provide goods and services that the world needs that are the foundation of our economy, not shareholders, whom sit on their asses, do nothing, and expect untold riches. Greed reigns at the expense of the working class and yet when workers demand a living wage to pay these exorbitant rents, the oligarchy cries poor and tells them to eat dirt. The working class must rise up in militant outrage.

I simply stated economic facts: places where you can eat out get more business when the minimum wage is higher. A higher minimum wage stimulates the economy. In fact I wish McDs would just go away, along with most other big chains. The bigger a food chain gets the more they compromise the quality of their food. Eat local.
There are a lot of explanations no one will admit to, but that surely could be one of them. A worldwide demographic collapse is looming and even if the US willo be less affected than most, there will be serious repercussions for the shrinking numbers of productive working people and the burgeoning numbers of long-living but unproductive retired people.

Kshama tried to establish other outposts when the main leverage of council seat for nearly ten years was under siege every month. Ask her about the amazon tax and how the mayor used the funds for something else. The fact that kshama never talks about what happened to the taxing the extremely wealthy shows something happened and the co sponsor of that bill doesn’t read their emails either.
