Global energy prices are surging around the world. From heating or cooling our homes, to cooking our food, and making the products we buy, energy is at the heart everything we do and when prices rise we all pay for it.
There are a number of reasons for the spike. We explore the reasons why, how long the cost crunch will last, and what's being done to ease the burden on everyday consumers.
The BBC's Aaron Heslehurst explains.

I don't know how much help this will be, but for those struggling for food, try the following: 1) Stock up on long life cupboard foods such as lentils, rice, pasta, etc. Buy in bulk and feed yourselves for ages 2) Try buying frozen veg, works out cheaper than fresh 3) Invest in a pressure cooker, and cook with it as often as possible. It uses less energy and also preserves nutrients. Pretty much anything goes, rice, vegetables etc 4) if you have many mouths to feed, try making soups every now and then, and add water to increase it if necessary. Good luck and I hope you all stay well

Before this crisis we had 63 energy companies. We are now down to 27. There has been an enormous cost to the taxpayer, the cap will be lifted and the government was warned about this months ago. Brilliant time to be paying more tax and national insurance. The Incompetence this government has shown is astounding and the regulator allowing these business models to run unchecked is even worse. Now we will all suffer. This will not go away FYI. Long term power Contracts are already higher and being bought a year in advance meaning this is here to stay. Plus I'm not sure how much securing households who's providers went bust has cost the tax payer.

Nord stream 2 is a private investment collaboration between Germany and Russia, costing 10 billion to Germany with an energy input increase of 15% gas export to the continent, which is very needed for Germany and others. The U.S are sore because they wanted the monopoly of energy imports into Europe by charging higher prices and because Russian energy is cheaper, the U.S have sanctioned any company dealing with Russia in this sector and now threatening to shut down something they have not invested in or own because of their typical spiteful hegemony. This resulted in a shortage of energy on the continent, raising prices by energy companies and they are making a fortune at the expense of the consumer.

I don't have a problem with energy companies rising prices (if linked to ability to pay such as Council Tax Band), what I do have a problem with is them making excessive profits and giving it away to shareholders with no accountability because of their monopolies. The realisation that all countries now have to have more robust energy security will mean that energy companies will have to invest more in infrastructure, storage and surge for winter months, so we don't get in the pickle we are at the moment and get the crazy future hedging that affects our bills for months even after the holdsale price of energy come down. We need to make sure we are building safeguards for the future to stop this happening ever again, and look at other elements as well - food secirty, water security etc. What we can't accept is the price shooting up everytime there is an international issue, and energy companies making excessive profits for their shareholders at the same time. Caps need to be placed on energy prices, profits to shareholders and make it so energy companies start investing more in making their infrastructure and storage more robust and enduring.

@deep.space.12
@deep.space.12 2 года назад
You kinda needa drill new wells to produce more gas. While the production cost might not have changed much, no one is paying for the explorations, supply goes down. All the money went to "renewables". When renewables failed to do their job last summer, gas reserves were drained, demand for gas increases, price increases. Both dwindling supply and increasing demand drive the price to increase. Cost is irrelevant here. Even if gas producers are suddenly not greedy, governments will compete to pay more to secure more gas for themselves, driving gas price back to its "fair value" as determined by supply-demand.
@colinwhite5355
@colinwhite5355 2 года назад
@@deep.space.12 Thanks for that - I can see that your explanation accounts for much of what is happening however, a ten-fold increase in wholesale gas prices still seems extraordinary. Difficult not to imagine some exploitation of the circumstances you describe is going on alongside of it all.
@deep.space.12
@deep.space.12 2 года назад
@@colinwhite5355 Surely there will be exploitations, such as speculations in the futures market. Wall of text incoming: As electricity storage is still insignificant in our grid, electricity produced is consumed real-time, in factories and in households. Meaning the power produced must match exactly the power draw of all the devices we plug in to the grid. Otherwise the AC frequency will first drop. If the demand still can't be matched, then regional blackouts will be forced, then finally the entire grid will blackout. To match the load, you need spare generators, and the fuel to run them. Do you recall a while back, when Texas's electricity grid blacked out? It took a few days to turn it back on. Remember that the load must always be balanced, so the grid can only switch on a small sector at a time, with the generators carefully matching the load, which is why recovery from a blackout is really difficult. All these to say, utilities and governments are willing to pay a lot to avoid this from happening, because the cost otherwise is even greater. The jargon for this is inelastic demand. When the supply is squeezed, no one wants a blackout, price will skyrocket naturally. And whether legitimate protection or financial speculation, when market participants expect this to happen, that price will skyrocket, they will buy the gas before the other parties. Months into the future. Either to ensure their own supply, or for profit. I can't tell what the ratio is. Maybe this can answer your question of who's profiting from this situation, and it's not necessarily the producers.

Why isn't Congress sounding the alarm about the unnecessary, extreme price hikes (GREED)? Who are the Congress members, state legislators & governors that are invested in these industries, especially in the ENERGY sector? Some politicians or their family members are on the boards of these companies that are price gouging and making huge record profits because of it & of course they're not tell the public about it; they'll just keep raking in the high dividends at our expense. Media doesn't seem to want to communicate these facts either, WHY NOT? Let's CONSISTENTLY talking about BIG BUSINESS (big essential retail) & ENERGY COMPANIES' record profits during times of massive economic struggles for the MAJORITY population, but their CEOs are making millions in bonuses. Let's pay attention to these corporations' quarterly PROFITS going back to before pandemic to the beginning of 2022 & then beginning of 2022, every quarter for at least the next year; let's keep their RECORD PROFITS in the forefront of the consumers minds.

Here's a small part of the problem. * British Gas made a profit of £1.3bn between January & June * BP announced profits of £6.95 billion between April and June alone * Shell has profited by £9.4bn in a year The MEN at the top: * John Pettigrew, boss of National Grid received £6.5m bonus on top of his salary * Chris O’Shea, chief executive of British Gas owner Centrica was paid almost £2m last year in salary and benefits * Centrica's non-executive directors were paid almost £1m * Scottish Power's CEO Keith Anderson is on £1.15m. * E.On boss Michael Lewis is on £1m * EDF's Simone Rossi is also on £1m * And their top execs enjoyed a share of £4.65m * Peter Simpson of Anglian Water earned a £1.3m pay package * Welsh Water bosses awarded themselves bonuses of over £930,000 * Severn Trent bosses awarded themselves bonuses of £5.56m * Thames Water's Sarah Bentley, received a £727,000 bonus on top of her £2m annual salary Meanwhile there are... * People who haven't had breakfast and/or lunch TODAY, because they can't afford it. * People using FoodBanks because food is becoming more of a luxury than a necessity. * Children celebrating a birthday without presents. * Parents worrying about new school uniforms - and some schools enforcing rules which are not cost-effective. * People who can't get to work because they can't afford to put petrol in their cars/pay for public transport anymore. * People who are working so much they're making themselves ill, and they STILL CAN'T AFFORD to pay their bills. * People who have been given fines by these same energy/water companies because they couldn't afford to pay their bills in the first place - increasing their debt. * Customers being told to do STAR JUMPS TO KEEP WARM for crying out loud! * Hose pipe bans when gallons of water leak away everyday. * Elderly people NOT DRINKING because they're worried about running out of water!!! All this and energy prices are set to rise up to 75% in October... THIS IS MADNESS!.. I'm all for supporting profits ..I'm not for supporting greed at the cost of lives of others.. Something needs to change.. Why are customers' money being used to make life more comfortable for those who are making life more intolerable for the rest of us? I actually don't understand how the energy companies are allowed to get away with this and why the government aren't stopping them instead of handing out money... Please pass it on

If all workers demanded 50% payrise twice within 1 year society would collapse so why are these greedy energy companies allowed to charge rediculous ammounts of money. We are in another form of 'Lockdown'. With the increase in costs for utilities, food, fuel etc, most people won't be able to afford the luxury of going out for meals, holidays or frivolous spending - this will have a repeat impact on the retail industry, global tourism and economy in general. It doesn't make sense to me? Will we also have a repeat of financial incentives - furlough etc? My fear is people will begin depending on credit cards and loans (if they aren't already).
