In this fun, passionate talk, writer and performer Yve Blake challenges the myth that fangirls are something to be laughed at, pointing out the long legacy of sexist derision of young women who love fully. Instead, she asks us to embrace the fangirl in all of us.
Yve Blake is an award winning writer, composer and comedian from Sydney. She likes to write things inspired by interviews with real people, and she LOVES to use music, silliness and spectacle to audiences hear and understand voices that they aren’t used to listening to. Yve has written the Book, Music and Lyrics for FANGIRLS, a musical inspired by 4 years of researching and speaking to passionate fans. FANGIRLS premieres in Australia in 2019, and is currently being adapted into a series with an award winning production company. Yve is an alumni of the Royal Court Writers’ Programme and has had her work developed at Belvoir, Griffin Theatre, The ATYP National Studio, Old Vic New Voices, the Barbican, The National Theatre and Princeton University. She was the recipient of the inaugural Rebel Wilson Theatre-maker scholarship at the Australian Theatre for Young People, and a guest speaker at London’s Women of the World Festival in 2018. She’s currently writing and co-writing several commissions for screenplays, musicals and even a musical podcast.

Football fans are genuinely insane and scary too.
@shreena96
@shreena96 5 лет назад
sometimes I'd see videos of them getting super mad that their team lost a game or something, they'll destroy the tv or anything they can find because they're that angry. In my country, sports fans can get a liiiiiittle bit overboard where they tend to physically fight(?) people but it would often be seen as passionate because most of them are men.
@IamClipsus
@IamClipsus 5 лет назад
@@shreena96 while it hasn't happened in the last couple years (as fas as I'm aware), it isn't uncommon in my country for fans of different football teams to kill each other. Not like everyday common, but it did happen every once in a while. Fans would sometimes just riot after big games.
@shreena96
@shreena96 5 лет назад
@@IamClipsus that's just so bizarre to me and no one seems to care that much if it happens imo. I've never heard of assault or murder cases involving fangirls and yet they're described as crazy or "will hurt you if you cross them" type of people
@IamClipsus
@IamClipsus 5 лет назад
@@shreena96 the main difference is that grown men are obviously more likely to hurt each other. We are built physically and mentally to fight, it's what we do. Large groups united under a single banner take us back to the 'tribe mentality', so it is no surprise that that kind of environment often fosters violence. Comparing hooligans (that is the word, right?) with fangirls doesn't make much sense tho. Yeah, you don't see them fighting outside of concert halls, but then again, you don't see fans of "rival" bands outside of those concert halls either, so who would they fight? Besides, saying "football fans are crazy" is no argument against "fangirls are crazy", which kind of struck me as the point of the video. Idk.
@shreena96
@shreena96 5 лет назад
Lord Clipsus It all comes down to the same thing which is passion. Those behaviours are seen as a part of the whole "sports culture" and acceptable eventho sometimes violence may take place and there's a hint of toxic too. I'm comparing both parties here mainly because of how society reacts to them and their level of acceptance, that's all.

@Roan.bot.
@Roan.bot. 5 лет назад
Madi Menzies it’s not a double standard. Guys who do the same things as fangirls for female celebrities are creepy too. Minus the squeal. Nobody is the exception. Just like men can cross the line so can women. It’s not about feelings bribed validated it about having a socially respectable level of self control. This women’s comparison from music fans to sports fans shows a skewed view of the world because they are two completely different forms of entertainment so her double standard remark is invalid and along with it her whole argument. It would make sense if she said men can be just as crazy with female stars but we can’t. In fact we can’t be anything more than enthusiastic. I see girls in the comments talking about affection for a person they don’t even spend time with. From a dudes point of view that’s not allowed if he want and if he does that it’s not something he could tell the girl straight off that bat because she doesn’t know him that way but if she find out that he thinks he knows her that way that makes him stalkerish. That’s the creepy part. One sided affection is where it goes to far.
@lauralemon4890
@lauralemon4890 3 года назад
@@Roan.bot. It's a double standard. Males don't admire women for their talent, skills or achievements, so her comparison between fangirls of boybands and fanboys of sports is equivalent and works perfectly to exemplify the double standard she is talking about. Your comment is absolutely irrelevant.

When i was in college, I hate how fangirls act until i became one. Years ago, i just don't get why do they scream and do stuff with high enthusiasm but when i became one, ITS A WHOLE NEW PERSPECTIVE IN LIFE! I started doing things i didn't know im able to do; like, having friends all over the world and create meaningful memories with them, composing and writing music and lyrics with them to dedicate to our faves, i started being more open to how i see the world, compare to who i was before i am now more compassionate and understanding to the people around me, i also get to learn educational stuff about literature, science, language, history, social issues, and great topics i wasnt able to learn at uni. Being part of BTS ARMY is a gift for many people. Not all people understand us but all the things we do for our boys, its all out of love. BTS also loves us back by dedicating their music to us and teaching us to love ourselves so that we can give real love to others too and also to not give up on our dreams and work hard for it because at one point of someday, everything we did will exactly what we will be. @Sweet Epiphany : Yea, not sure I get what OP's point is. But I agree with liking music from other cultures. I grew up listening to all sorts of music from all over the world. My dad was a musician too, and later I became a guitarist, instructor and recording engineer. I mix all sort of musical styles in my own compositions too. From, Japanese and Arabic modes, Indian and Balkan rhythms, to blues, country and jazz. Even and especially when I play in progressive metal bands, it's fun and interesting to toss in something from another culture. But also, that sort of thing is a staple for jazz-rock fusion etc, witch is what I love most.

Yes, some of those things are intrusive and a bit scary. It's easier to teach those limits I suspect when people's enthusiasm is embraced and respected, and say if we don't police emotional expression in men maybe things will also get better? I don't know if the whole deal with sexism is just teaching emotional control gone awry. Invasion of the body snatchers used a high-pitched scream to indicate a non-converted human which is interesting: and honestly, which is scarier - enthusiastic men in terms of far right football firms, incels & stalkers have committed far more actual murders and terrorist incidents as far as I am aware!

The way they describe anything in TED talks is always rubbing the subject in the right way. People not only learn from their mistakes, they must also receive a feed-back of this mistake. One does not learn from a mistake he never knew he committed. I'm afraid this is the issue here, we are literally in the middle of a giant Survivorship bias, where people who survived to tell the tales, come and talk about how you should quit your precious job to travel, how your instinct is always right, how anything you thought was negative in yourself is in actually a strength, etc. I never saw TED Talks about how people attempted things but got nothing positive in the end, yet it's much more common in real life.

I am reminded of a passage in Douglas Adams' novel "Dirk Genty's Holistic Detective Agency" in which a venerable old professor points to a particular cobblestone and remarks, "Wordsworth once got sick on that brick. Great man."

DAMN! as a fangirl, i'm crying. this is what people need to know. we are just as sane as the other. we are just as normal as the other. i agree, our scream is not a crazy sound, it is a hopeful sound. i hope no one would ever underestimate and judge fangirls again. let's love with no fear and apology towards the one we love. and let's just respect someone's love and interest towards something and someone because we never know how would 'that person/thing' means to someone. have a good day!♥

Being a girl, I think that fangirl affection is awesome, but being obsessed with Harry Styles 24/7 is a bit unhealthy in my opinion. Though I had my own share of squealings in my time, hence I do not discourage these young girls from letting out their affections.
@jellyrulzify
@jellyrulzify 5 лет назад
Nancy K you can’t hate the girl obsessed with Harry 24/7 because that is how the world is pushing her to behave. The 14 yr girl is told to love harry styles and the 14 yr boy is told to love video games. So in the end, please direct your unhealthy opinion to capitalism
@Hitogata

Sure, being passionate about your interests and loving things is great, no matter if you're male or female, but... believing you're going to marry Harry Styles because you're willing to slit people's throat over it is crazy and delusional. It's not OK at any age. Also imagine what it's like to be a famous person and not being able to have a normal life and go to public places because a mob of crazy fans, crying, yelling and shrieking will come running after you and trample over everything and everyone in their way... People need to chill. Seriously.

Because ANY criticism of female behaviour is obviously caused by sexism, apparently. If you say a female is behaving badly, there will be a TED talk shaming you for criticizing the pure angels that absolutely all women are
@aylbdrmadison1051

@Harry M : Why are you so lost? Just how hard was your heart broken to fill you with such anger? Women are not your enemy. More like you are your own enemy here guy. If you want to be loved, then you yourself have to give love, it's as simple as that. If you can't find it in your heart to love others, then don't blame them for not loving you back dude, it's just simple math.

@@aylbdrmadison1051 hahaha I have a beautiful wife and we love each other, but nice try. I'm actually worried about my children. Marriage rates are going down fast, and that has to do with how courts always side with women (men get resentful and women do whatever they want cause they know they can get away with it). If you stop trying to ad hominem every time you hear criticism, you might actually see the problem.

To be willing to kill for a love interest, either it be a game or an idol is psychotic however you spin it. One could even argue that placing a human so far up above all else as to the status of a demigod is psychotic in of itself.
@Roan.bot.
@Roan.bot. 5 лет назад
Yes this is why I reported this video for promoting terrorism 😂 this woman’s view of reality is skewed. Her comparison was invalid because guys are held to the same and even stricter rules when it comes to female celebrities and women in general so no there isn’t a double standard if she compared it right instead of framing it as if women are just a victim of their own feelings. It’s any socially unacceptable behavior that stems from lack of self control that is the problem.
@ipromisethatserendipityisa9656
Yes its psychotic but you are assuming that every fan girls says or does that. There are outliers everywhere, be it fans of sports or movie actors.

I'm ARMY & 44 (BTS fan). I'm in a BTSARMYmom group full of mom fans that rang in age from 20s to 60s. My two kids 3 & 11 are also huge fans. I took my daughter to the LA concert this year and it was the most bonding, loving moment we've had in ages and did a lot to heal some hurts. When we were in line to exit the stadium this elderly couple in their 80s came up and I let them in. She shuffled along holding onto her husband on one side and her ARMY bomb (light stick) in the other. We are family and we are supportive & inclusive beyond anything I've ever felt - including my religious faith. That night was the best night of united fangirling (and boying) and love I've ever felt.

Everyone who is relatively sane and engages generally in healthy behavior feels a sense of revulsion and disgust when in the presence of fanatics who will engage in violent and destructive behavior with little provocation. It's called self-preservation. The gender of the psycho is irrelevant, the lack of any real parenting is very relevant.
