Had a byju's subscription for my 11th and 12th. It was seriously the worst place to study online u can't even interact with the teacher who are teaching you. They just play pre recorded videos for online classes. And for asking your doubts you had to ask via text while the classes are ongoing. Byju's is way to unorganised.
Our house maid's relative back in her native was mislead by a sales associate and got her to sign a contract. Now they can't get out of it, nor the service promised was delivered. Although it's nowhere related to me, this is very unethical and if this is their business model you know you're going down in the near future!

Byjus itself a bubble.. No proper guidance No proper Tecaher. Criteria for becoming a Tecaher in byjus is not as per the standard. Bad service after accepting their courses. Byjus is not a edtech instead it's a sales company.
As an employee who got laid off from one of these 'Well Funded`,`Hyper Growth` Ed-tech companies. I must say your analysis is absolutely spot on. The in-organic customer acquisition along with low profit margins is what is digging the grave of these companies along with the fact that social media ads have gotten much more expensive during/post pandemic due to a high surge in demand (since more and more people are going online). Also such companies have no 'business moat' because they dont bring anything special to the table (compared to personalities like prashant dhawan and aman dhattarwal) so someone can easily undercut them if they have deeper pockets.

I think the success of PW was because of two reasons- 1)The price disruption (first course was launched at 999rs,and now courses are at 3-5k per year) before that no one had that price point 2) very strong person brand because of emotional connect with students as he taught free on yt for 3 years before that when no one was teaching.

This is why I left Byjus, we were just selling for sales numbers, I had realised back then that the course was not upto the par. After the sales is done all the promises that were made would be forgotten and not even parents or the students could relate to the course.

They doesn't even leaves poor families, they took signature of the in loan papers by deceiving them and later they got to know that they're got trapped in loan instead of interest free installments system and also they promise a lot that your kid will become topper etc etc... Thanks bro firstly...i am running a coaching institute for more than a decade...put my best in serving students...but was not good in marketing nor that I had a very good financials...but our results are very good and motive is honest.. but these edtech giants are slowly killing small players like us because niether we have a good marketing budget nor we charge the students high fees ...our motive is to give service to the middle class or poor... We are purely existing in market due to our " content" and results and will continue to serve our society... yours this video motivated us because at the end good content is the winner...

This video will be very close to my heart. As a jee aspirant I will say PW was the only channel who understood the real pain of students and provided greatest of content and to the point. There were no promotions no waste of time only educational and relevant content. Most of you guys will see it as a ed-tech business which just became a unicorn but for students it was never a company and never will be. IT'S AN EMOTION ❤️❤️❤️ Which brings us to the most fundamental concept of business which is generate value not revenue!!!

yes there is quality content but they are less known as their course prices are like 30k/year. Yes I know they have quality content on youtube but no other support.

Teachers like ABJ sir, ALK sir, NS sir, etc have their own telegram channel where you can ask doubts. But it is very rare to have doubts if you are studying from them. Their crash courses are almost free for high performers . If you need question solving material then you can either buy their material which is 6k or you can buy/ download resonance material since both are same ( since teachers are from resonance ).
Alakh Sir is a boon for those students who doesn't belong to wealthy family. Before PW - Good Coaching is only for Wealthies After PW- No matter your financial Status you can go Ahead. On the top
These edutech companies are more bothered about selling courses rather considering content and quality of the course. If standards and quality are good no one stops using them. Every business grows with common recommendations from neighbours and relatives and it is the same reason to decline. Content quality and creativity are priorities…. Not numbers of courses sold by marketing team

I have personally worked at byju's, extramarks as well as unacademy ...What have I realised in all of that experience is that these people considered the students as clients and the leads as parents.... they just calculate how much money they can drain out of the parents in order to make their student any "better version" of themselves... that is literally impossible to achieve because they just are there to sell their products....and after they are sold we were told to just f*** off...and Not handle students problems...Because of the weekly sales target...you have to focus on the next one....And the next one...And So on... Its a vicious cycle...which hardly has any benefits for the students...Only further burden and Utter confusion because of the plethora of books and study materials.
I think Alakh sir genuinely revolutionized the online IIT educational sector in India. He was the first to post good quality long videos on youtube. His motive was to provide good education for the less fortunate, not to become a billion dollar company, so he focused on quality, and here we are today. Even tough I paid 1.5 lakh rupees for my coaching i still study from Alakh sir.

Unacademy gets a lot of bad reputation for seemingly no reason.... Its often clubbed with byjus, but tbh Unacademy has always been playing honestly..... I started studying from their coaching RU-vid channel back in class 8 (2018) since I wanted to study class 11.... And not only I was easily able to understand concepts of class 11… I also got a self assurance that things might not be as complicated as they seemed because the teachers were always supportive.... Now 4 years later the edtech industry has changed a lot, new players are coming into the market but still the Unacademy RU-vid teachers are teaching with the same passion as they used to..... I don't watch their channel anymore since I bought PW lakshya batch but those 2018 times will always be something that will come to my mind when I think about Unacademy....
True, people say unacademy bad and stuff. But they teach so good. People like these watch first lecture and leave saying its bad. Probably the reason why first lectures of playlist have more views.

Unacademy is high priced but pays off if you know how to use it. Whereas PW limits you to the course you've purchased which makes sense. PW does a good job at providing content at cheap prices, we shouldn't forget that they're making money not helping atudents for free. Channels like mohit tyagi, physics galaxy provided free content for almost an decade yet somehow PW somehow claim credit for giving it free for first. Anyway we must not waste our time to defend edtech corporate anymore and study hard perhaps.

I took one course from BYJUS due to my college I was unable to give much time to the course .... They never called me or gave me guidance ... Only I used to call and it remained one side study .... Initially the salesman told me mentor would call , check my scores ,, guide me ,, always keep track of your preparation but it was other way round ... Completely relatable video. Being a MBA entrance exam aspirant, have followed the edtech space for a while for CAT coachings. To be honest, I feel the RU-vid channels, coachings that operate through facebook, etc. are doing better than big players like Byjus, mainly because their overhead expenses and CAC might be less than Byjus and they offer cheaper & good quality content. In the end, you forgot to add Think School's name while mentioning about Study IQ and other channels 😅. Even you guys are doing an amazing work, great business / geopolitical content everytime, now it's like I wait for your videos every Tuesdays and Fridays.

I have used both PW and Unacademy. I can confirm Alakh sir and all other teachers really cares for students. You can feel the connect. Where as Unacademy has mix of teachers where some cares and some not. And surely both produce quality content much better than offline.
If you think so about offline then you really have a bad taste in quality. Online is no where in comparison to offline in my opinion, because I have experienced all these two and offline also.
Brands like PW, apni kaksha will always succeed due a strong word of mouth advertisement (considering they also adapt to change). Also students have seen their journey from the start, and these people have gained so much trust from the students. Each student recommends the course to other people. Also the people who started the company were themselves teachers, so they know everything about the industry and the student's problems. One more thing noticed in unacademy and byjus is that they offer so many teachers that the student just wastes time in just selecting a teacher. Yes options are good but not much. Also people have claimed that the teachers leave in the middle of a course, so the students are left hanging in the middle of their syllabus. These companies treated students and parents as a customer to aquire money, and not merely just as a student.

When I was in Allen [ In their TOP JEE Advance batch ] --> When we could not understand a topic well , we use to refer Physics wallah sir , From there , I got to know him , his Quality and his capabilities . My best Friend who also came to my Collage , cleared JEE in 3 month prep from Physics walla RU-vid Chanel only. Thus , My for my smaller brother , I have given him physics walla sir's class course . [ and the results are 10x more than expected ] And thus , yes , without getting paid by sir , I do his promotion whenever someone ask me from where to study for JEE and NEET .

He came in India's Top 100 Competitive programmers [ CodeForces ] list in second year itself . [ we are of batch 2024 ] so let's leave his 3 month JEE story, as his is not normal , But sill the Allen Story is true [ even in top batch , even if the Teacher is from IIT bombay , even if the teacher is himself AIR under 200 , it doesn't mean he has Good Teaching skills , even if you are in top batch , that don't mean you will understand every teacher and every teach will be equal ] thus for some topic , we use to refer him . | Personally if I had chose to chose Allen vs Phyics wallah . it would be PW . it's : ) My personal opinion

This is what happened with me to BYJU'S I paid 5000 to HOLD SEAT for ias classes I cancelled it and applied for refund but some senior told me to pay full amount of the course 71000rupees then apply for refund. Bullshit now they're not responding well God knows when they will pay me i am gonna take legal action

FEEDBACK I really appreciate the time and effort you put into creating these case studies. But I doubt your methodology to approach them. The things which I am most sceptical about are the figures and estimates you use. They often seem baseless and just arbitrary. Examples 1. The cost of advertisements through different modes. Have you researched about them or just random figures? 50000 for billboards, etc 2. What made you arrive at the fact that organically built brands would require just 1/10th for customer acquisition. Is this a mere opinion? Once again, I am not trying to ridicule your videos. I hope you will find my feedback helpful.
Your videos are always valuable and give surplus satisfaction to me. I always believe that a subject is never boring, it is the passionate teacher who by his pleasant way of teaching , provides interesting corners to the students and they start liking and loving it. Damn, you're a UPSC aspirant and learn from Prashant Dhawan? That guy is not a UPSC teacher even if he acts like one. Don't rely on his videos as UPSC material, choose better teachers like Divyakirti, Ojha, Rahman etc and even some former IAS officers. There are many names and all are better than him.
@@lol311 Everyone has different taste. I am not sure about UPSC, but that guy really made geopolitics very interesting and for me , no doubt he is good at teaching.
@@butterman0 Just take a look at all his videos and then try to align with UPSC syllabus. Except few, majority of his videos are just statements of leaders or some news articles that you can easily watch anywhere. If you've carefully read syllabus and PYQs, you will find out his videos are just generic opinionated news. MCQs are okay but relying on him for UPSC is too much.

I think Aman Bhaiya is currently not utilising the leverage to its fullest Potential, that is College Students. he has got a Million+ subscribers on Apna College and Engineering college are the REAL SCAMS in India. theres huge scope to replace them.
Tbh with the current state of apni kaksha i don't think they will thrive in the edtech market...cz he lost most of his brilliant teachers and the energy of apni kaksha is fading with time...students of different batches had a terrible experience and ofc they won't recommend others to join paid services by apni kaksha
Here is a basic problem I see with Indian startups in general, almost all the startups (the so-called unicorns) are rarely (if ever) based on some new technology. Sure companies like nykaa and byju's may have a good business model. But the problem with a good business model is that you cannot make it proprietary. Anyone can copy it. I think the focus should be more on novel technology/ processes that a startup has to offer and not just on valuation and business models.
Physics wallah started from a small youtube channel, and consistent videos slowly gained subscribe due to quality content. and in last two years hired mote teachers and become a company with paid batches. earlier alakh sir ( founder and the person who taught on youtube) used to ask for donations by giving bank account details to support himself. now paid batches and free batches both are available with highest quality content. no advertisement. just spread by word of mouth. highly profitable unlike other Edtech companies. 500 total teachers 1900 total employee. also started offline coaching by the name pathshala with fee of 25k rupees. Really cool

Lot of equations change once you are funded. Biju’s was also built on personal brand where Byju used to take CAT coaching classes in a rented auditorium. If you dig unacademy you’ll find similar stories too. Most of the Edtech’s had the humble beginning. Problems came with the funding and the unrealistic scaling desires.
Personal branding with ads helped me get 10,000+ paying students at low CACs. Completely agree with your points. One of the factors that helped us scale is the cashback model for assignment completions. It helped us increase Course completion rates which is one of the biggest challenges with online education.

Aman dhatterwal sir helped a lot and turned me from a kid who had 70 marks in physics to 95 😭😭 and same goes for chem , and all the teachers on his channel motivate and don't degrade one's motivation
Well Unacademy has 10s of youtube channels for each and every exam. Unacademy also has a concept of special classes which are also free and has quality lessons and question practice. Unacademy was the one who dared to bring out teachers from renowned offline coaching centres and that too at a fraction of price. Well I support Unacademy because I was attending RU-vid and special classes for exams that helped me at lot clearing those exams.

First of all awesome video ...i would also like to say that among all the organic players u talked about like Prashant sir , Aman etc...u also talked about telusko of coding segment but there is also one more player in coding field with very huge following and that too for free...CODE WITH HARRY ...he too is awesome..( not doing any comparison with anyone ). Its just that he is also one of very few person who not only makes videos in Hindi but have put most of the content on RU-vid for free.

Physics wallah case is exceptional, here people and even students sees the physics wallah as it's their own institute, people seened the physics wallah from the starting where he teaches in white board with gloves to remove something written in board , it's like students attach himself or herself to physics wallah.physics wallah online course is so cheap that other ed tech platform ( atleast it's true for this time) can't able to match physics wallah lowest cost with their top notch study material and videos.physics wallah is emotion for students not a company. It's my personal experience you may differ from my thinking
