Why are human bodies asymmetrical? - Leo Q. Wan

Symmetry is everywhere in nature. And we usually associate it with beauty: a perfectly shaped leaf or a butterfly with intricate patterns mirrored on each wing. But it turns out that asymmetry is pretty important, too - and more common than you might think. Leo Q. Wan takes us into the human body to show how biological asymmetry can be quite beautiful.

After washing your hair, comb it to the back and take a picture of your face. After drying your hair, process your picture on a PC: Split the picture in a right and left half. Make each whole with its own mirrored version. You will have two persons that look different from each other and you.

0:38 It might look pretty symmetrical at a first glance, but take a picture of one side of your face or body, flip one and overlay them, you will find out just how different they are. We use our facial muscles and our body's organs very differently on each side, resolting in major differences (and of course, some differences we are simply born with). It's actually kinda weird when you think about it. Since looking at a reflection shows us an inverted image of ourselves, we actually never see ourselves the way others do (unless we're looking at a flipped picture of ourselves).

I can fit my left glove on my right hand, just have to put it on backwards.
@prentisshaines8007
@prentisshaines8007 6 лет назад
Yes, and you can also flip your hand so that your palm is facing you and put the glove on normally, but these methods don't make the two systems symmetrical, they simply change the way the systems are asymmetrical. In your example you're wearing the glove backwards, and if the glove is asymmetrical on each face (as many special purpose gloves are), then the glove will not function as intended. If you flip your hand over to orient the glove properly (my example), then now your hand will not work as intended.

Models are usually chosen for their symmetry. Here’s a revealing little thing to do. Take a selfie and make copies; halve the images; take say 2 left halves and flip one of them over then fit them together. Then repeat for the right side images. You should now have 3 facial images: one of how your face would be if you were left side symmetrical, one for the right side and an original of what you actually are. The results can be quite horrendous.

@deboraescudeiro6874
@deboraescudeiro6874 8 лет назад
Nice video! However, I did expect a deeper answer. So, the cilia in the embryo pushes fluid to one side and stimulates different genes. But why does it do that? What is the meaning or value of being asymmetrical? Especially for our external appearance: parallel organs with the same function look slightly different (eyes, ears, hands, etc - not considering the fact that they are 'flipped'); central organs have one half different than the other (nose, mouth and so on). I don't know much about biology, but if our DNA has the 'programming' for our body parts why don't identical feet happen? Not that I'd want that though, just curious about these questions. :)

What about external asymmetry? Because most people have one boob, foot, hand, etc. that are bigger than the other, and sometimes even more differences. Like my whole left side pretty much is bigger than my right. Even my left leg is slightly longer than my right. My left arm is stronger than my right, despite being right handed, my left boob is a whole cup size bigger than my right, etc. My mother has one ear that's a full centimeter higher than the other, she'd always warp her sunglasses so they'd sit straight on her face. What about stuff like that?
@thenarrator1921
@thenarrator1921 7 лет назад
My theory is that, while symmetry has its own merits, for example, most animals are "two-sided" because of the necessity of sensing direction and movement; like stereo speakers, ears, nose, eyes gather external information in separate directions to form a cohesive data of the environment. Movement; I'll leave that to biomechanics, but most vertebrae are "two-sided" for movement. However, with all these merits from symmetry, vital parts, which are of higher importance like digestive organs simply do not have space or resource to have a pair inside the bodies of animals, and that the function of it is enough to function as a sole part of the body. Try imagining trying to fit two engines inside a car. Not only is it unnecessary, but difficult too. I forgot who mentioned this quote but; "Form follows function."

Asymetrical ears (height or shape) are not mentionned here, but i believe it's common enough..even if it's not noticeable, it really screws up your glasses? :p The dominant hand or leg should be more muscular too, i think. Some body parts that come in pairs, obviously, (i m betting you r thinking of one or two ''improper'' parts right now hh) , i'm guessing, their different shapes come from asym' muscular use or the oxygenated blood flow.. I feel like the quality of my hair isn't the same on the two halves of my head :p guess it has to do with wich side i favor in my sleep :p it's usually the kind of observation i share while poeple look at me like i m a freak
