Why Are People Buying VHS Tapes In The 2020s?

Here we are in 2022 and VHS tapes have come back into vogue, at least for a small segment of the population. Nostalgia leads the charge behind this resurgence, as well as collecting and design enthusiasts. Many people over 40 remember popping in a tape during the 1980s and 1990s to watch a movie. Now many people are amassing large VHS tape collections, despite the streaming services. The clunky old technology brings back memories even though it doesn't always offer a perfect picture.

Yes, nostalgia is such a huge reason so many people are buying and watching VHS tapes. There's something soothing about the sounds it makes inside the VCR.

I practiced at a video rental store 20 years ago. And my boss sometimes used to bring in VHS movies, which maybe had a print run of 1000 copies. Such as concert movies made by varied local bands. My guess is that these VHS movies will most likely be forgotten by time. Which is extremely unfortunate.

I've been using them for years, when I was a kid my family didn't have cable, so my great grandpa would record our favorite shows to vhs tapes for us since he had cable. My sisters and I grew up very outdated but it was fun! Cassette tapes and vhs tapes are certainly not better than their digital counterparts in terms of quality, and though I do pay for spotify and use streaming services, vhs and cassettes are just a lot more fun and enjoyable personally. Same here buddy, in Australia we have the salvos, same thing different name basically and the same reason towards not selling videos, “too obsolete for any sales” but you can tend to find some im not joking you between books in the book section, that’s happened to me a couple times when a young employee I guess confuses a tape cover for a book they shove it in there. Honestly your best bet can be eBay, but if you’re more privy to physical purchasing try these: Vintage stores/record stores, I went to one last night and they had more than just vinyl, every vhs you could think of and a few different players, LD in there too! I’m not sure if they have these in America but libraries here have a old media stock box which the public can take what they please out of, found a mint 1979 copy of grease for free there And honestly just walk around and see if any people have piled old stuff they don’t want outside their house and check there

I just can not understand why anyone would actually want them. I have not bought a movie of any kind for around 12 years. I have not owned a VHS player for at least 17 years. When I want to watch a movie that I own (one of about 20 I just don't want to throw away) I dont go get the dvd I just stream it online. Widescreen VHS WAS made for widescreen TV's 16:9 ratio. Even streaming today's movies in widescreen, they have the black box on top and bottom. I have Star Wars in regular and widescreen. The regular has more top and bottom picture while the sides are cut off. The widescreen has less top and bottom but the sides have more picture. On one specific screen where Darth Vader is speaking, you cannot see the guard on his side when in full screen but when you watch that same scene in widescreen, you can see the guard next to him. I was raised on full screen and when widescreen came out, i HATED those top and lower black bars. Even on my 60 inch widescreen TV, todays movies still have those black bars. I have grown to like the widescreen and prefer it now.

There's no way I could watch one of these things again lol some people like living in the past even when the past is a massive downgrade. I'm always for the present and future looking for the best experience possible. People can be strange, no doubt. But I guess that what makes us all individuals. I'm 55 years old and I still don't get it, probably never will.
@510Books
@510Books 7 месяцев назад
Nostalgia is the driving factor behind the resurgence in VHS purchases. The sound and feel of popping in a tape and hearing the machine whirring away negates the downgrade in quality. Also, there is programming that is only available on VHS tape and never made it onto DVD, Blu-ray or streaming. Thanks for watching.
@alwhitney68
@alwhitney68 7 месяцев назад
Yeah, I understand, but nostalgia never outweighs my common sense. Nostalgia or not some tech just doesn't age well which is the case here As far as something that didn't release other formats. It wouldn't be anything worth watching especially for me under those conditions. Especially something I have already seen, which I assume is usually the case for these people. I do understand but I still don't get it. I guess nostalgia for some is very overwhelming regardless the price you pay. Don't think I would ever want to be in that state of mind. Vinyl I totally understand, it still sounds good and you can still buy newly released material. I do wish I had all the VHS tapes I have owned in the past. I'd have them all on eBay for sure laughing all the way to the bank.

@510Books
@510Books 11 месяцев назад
@@westonhecker VHS tapes have come back into vogue, albeit on a minor scale compared to the 1980s and 1990s of course. Currently on eBay there are 3,000+ listings for "VHS rewinder" which indicates there is a nice size demand. Nostalgia is a powerful force and those who grew up in the 1980s and 1990s want to hear and feel the VHS tape, not to mention that there are still thousands of titles only available in the VHS format.

The issue with VHS is that they degrade. The tape wears out, breaks, the magnetic coating wears off, rendering the plastic useless, the magnetic recordings degrade, etc. Given absolutely no new tapes at all are being made, this won't last, sadly.
@510Books
@510Books 2 года назад
Yes, they do degrade but there were so many VHS tapes made and sold in the 1980s-2000s that there is a tremendous supply. I have a hunch that this VHS resurgence is going to propel some people to start releasing new VHS tapes. We'll see.
@992turbos
@992turbos 2 года назад
Not if they’re kept out of heat and away from moisture/humidity. I have a LOT of the earliest releases of tapes from 1978 and 1979, and they all play flawlessly, actually a lot better than the tapes made more recently. The older tapes were certainly made with better quality tape stock. Quality all around was better, those early heavier cassettes are like bricks. But they only degrade if you don’t take care of them, like anything else. Also, I have a Tapechek machine, which restores tapes back to their original condition. Retensions the reel back to factory tension (that loosens over time), scrapes the dirt/debris off the reel with a sapphire crystal, rubs additional dirt off with a cloth. Ive had tapes with dropouts, excessive lines, audio and tracking issues, play like brand new after one pass through the machine. So, its not like every vhs tape is doomed. It all depends on how you take care of your stuff.
