Why Are People Mad About The Skin Color Of Natlan Characters? - Genshin Impact

In this video, we dive into the controversy surrounding the skin color of Natlan characters in Genshin Impact. Many fans feel that these characters do not accurately represent the ethnic diversity that should be present in a region inspired by Latin American and West African cultures. Natlan draws from a rich blend of cultural influences, including the legendary land of the Aztecs, known as Aztlán. With skin tones in Latin America ranging from very light to very dark, and the majority of the population in West Africa having darker skin, we explore whether HoYoverse missed the mark in their character designs.
Join the discussion and share your thoughts in the comments! Do you think HoYoverse made a mistake? How important is accurate cultural representation in gaming?

As a Nigerian myself (West African), I love the designs, the scenery I've seen so far, and the cute pixel pets/pokemons, but I do agree that the characters should rightfully have their melanin. The only thing that got me a bit upset was the Ororon issue. Over here, Olorun is a Yoruba god who is the ruler of the heavens (the name quite literally means "owner"). I guess they realized they couldn't give such a title to someone who isn't the archon, because they changed his name to Ororon (I hate the name, I'm so sorry 😭). I wasnt even going to comment on that, but if they were going to give such a heavy name like Olorun to someone that looks like Sasuke (got this from another post, hilarious btw), then nah. I don’t believe all games or even pieces of media need to represent culture but when the company makes a point to say and “follow through” ((using this loosely because they do add music architecture from other cultures excluding the people involved)) with adding in that culture. Mojang never stated or showed us that “adding in real world culture” was their purpose, sure they added real world elements but thats just how the game is. Genshin made a point to represent culture and has FAILED in doing so and we are holding it accountable for its claim. Also me commenting on it and not playing the game is me taking matters into my own hands what are you talking about? Take earthbound for example, there is a level called scaraba which is supposed to represent egypt. But in that level, the people there definitely do not look like average ancient egyptians, even though the level and its music is clearly taken from egyptian culture, but the people do not look egyptian There are many more levels out there that do take inspiration from other countries and cultures and not have their people represented well in the past, and guess what? Representing a culture and profiting off of it without accurately representing its people is cultural appropriation. And it has been used to exploit minority cultures for hundreds of years. I don’t think Hoyo’s INTENT is racist. I think they’re making all these characters pale and skinny bc that’s what they think will result in slightly higher profits. Due to weird ass chinese beauty standards and all that. But even if their intent isn’t racist, the effect of their actions still is. I don’t really expect they’d change these existing designs. But I’d want them to introduce future characters with darker skin.

I remember watching a fanar of Kaeya some time ago and wondering why they painted his skin darker. Then I went to the game and payed close attention to each skin tone and realized that he was slightly less white than the others. And I was like "is this what Genshin thinks dark skin looks like???!!!!" Since then I have continued to pay attention to it and it stills confuses me. Those skin colors are really really light. Here's the thing: If Mihoyo didn't want backlash because of character skin colors, all they had to do is not use countries and cultures associated with them The message they're sending to their players is "we're going to profit from your cultural heritage, but we're not going to actually show any respect to our players connected to it because dark skin is not good enough for us." Notice how nobody insists that characters like Fuirna or Diluc shouod have dark skin. Giving Natlan (and Sumeru) characters a bigger variety of skintones is not about being "woke" or "forced diversity", it's just a decent thing to do because it wouod show that Mihoyo actually gives a shit and has respect towards its fanbase. Plus, personally, as someome who really appreviates the potential genshin has when it comes to its art, I feel like making all characters so pale is an act of self-sabotage. Maualani's (Natlan Shark Girl's) tatoos are barely visible on her current skintone. It comes off as the execs limiting their game's art potential for very stupid, arbitrary reasons.

I think that the fact that these characters are light skinned is very, very offensive. I say this as a latina. They take names from gods and deities that are being worshipped till today and completely twist them in a way that does not do the cultures justice. In LATAM, we have suffered from structural racism and colorism ever since the colonizers invaded. And (at least in Brazil, where I live) they only accepted european immigrants in here to "whiten" their colonies, since the majority of residents where black enslaved people. So for them to portray the orixás and other gods from the yorubá and the many indigenous cultures over here, which is a symbol of resistance against western colonization, in such a sloppy and racist manner is a real low blow.

But it's true that some Natlan characters do look better with darker skin

@@zen0siria512 This is a Chinese company. Why is anyone shocked that their characters are literally only two shades of pale? It's what's accepted there and is a beauty standard in Asian countries afaik to have light skin tones to the point that skin bleaching is still acceptable. Asking for diversity here is admirable but futile, they don't care about representation outside of their own and never have. All of their games feature an entirely white cast if you actually stop to take a look at all 4 of them.

Keep in mind where Hoyo is stationed. Still, I was a little surprised myself since I read the manga. In the lore, it mentioned red hair and dark skin. Hell, the first grand master in Mondstadt was a Natlan native with red hair and dark skin. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I'm from latin America (Honduras) (I was literally born and lived there for 13 years of my life, and both my parents are form Honduras) And when I came to U.S everybody thought I was form UK (because of my accent) or U.S 'cause I'm White! Once someone aske me if I was from Germany or Russia... The same issue happened with my bother... So yeah... I know dark people in Latin america, but there is also white people form latin america too. I say that at least from latin america we have good representation in Natlan...

It’s the fact that they gave the characters names of dark skinned deities yet had the audacity to make them white 💀
