My name is David and with my dog Lefty we travel the country in our ambulance conversion RV. I made this change to my life and you can too! Like, subscribe and comment! Lefty would appreciate it - he wants the adventures to keep coming!
The Campulance is a 2002 Ford E450 Marque Commando 164 Class III ambulance powered by the Ford 7.3l Powerstroke turbo diesel engine and a 4 speed 4R100 transmission. Lefty is a 68lb American Staffordshire Terrier (best I can tell) that came from the Verona Street Animal Shelter (www.vsas.org/) in March 2014 at the age of 9 months. We have been living full time in the campulance since July 2019. #ambulancelife #vanlife #staffordshireterrier

Hi David, we live fulltime in an 11-yr-old Class C motorhome. In 2011 my spouse (an RN) became disabled and can no longer work. In 2022, I finally retired at 68. We sold our home and bought a used RV and moved into it. It had been a goal of mine being fulfilled. It's been a learning curve for sure! Lots of repairs and upgrades; lots of learning how to do new things. There was a medical crisis for my spouse the first year on the road. But we both want to continue this nomadic life. Sometimes we boondock on BLM. Sometimes we stay in national forest campgrounds. This is our 2nd winter since we began and we've stayed in an RV resort during the off-season on the Colorado River. It's good to have the reassurance of electricity, water, sewer, and showers during bad weather, although I'm so tempted to do LTVA in Quartzsite. RV resorts aren't as friendly as BLM boondocking. I guess I wanted to say that we've never considered returning to sticks and bricks. We never considered leaving this lifestyle "if things didn't work out." But that's just us. We live on social security and my tiny pension. And we live more than we would've had we stayed in our house. Still, it's not all sightseeing and activities. You dont become a different person just because you take off in an RV to live. I think we do a lot of what we'd have done before. We're definitely more physically active than we were and are working towards increasing that. But no matter where you go, there you are. You know? Anyway, we both love your channel and Lefty's exploits. (We think he needs puppy boots - haha 😂). Thanks for sharing your lives with your followers.

Keep going. What you are doing right now is important, but it won't always be this way. Buy a rig and work on it to make it comfortable, and maybe get away in it for a day or two if you are able to. Short shakedown trips are important because nothing is ever perfect first time and you don't want to find that out stuck out in a desert somewhere. There is respite care available to take the load off a few days per month if you need it, and it's important to keep your own sanity. If you can afford it take advantage of it and get some of yourself back. It doesn't make you a bad person. Call in help. Eventually those people will be in a place where they no longer need you, but it's important that you get there with your sanity and goals intact, knowing that you did your best. I've been there, and trust me, coming out the other side and being able to hold your head up high is very important. Maybe also find a Lefty companion. We really don't deserve dogs, but they are the best teachers, companions and partners anyone could ask for.

I lived in a Honda Element for 7 months in 2020-21. Then 3 months in Mexico before returning to help my dad who was having health issues. He turns 85 in March. Told him I will stay until the end. Probably at least 5 more years. So yes if you're older and still have living parents then it's a factor. Just saving pennies and collecting some gear until the day comes.

I to was backed into a corner, employment wise. My job was not working out for me anymore and I found your channel, giving myself a path of escape. Thank you for that. Sold my place, purchased an 2000 Ford Ambulance with a 7.3. Left the state and have been living in New Mexico as my home base for now; staying in a ultra cheap RV park. I've order a Tiny House and will get that all decked out; buy some land and setup my Off-Grid hideaway. Planning to start a business at the same time and sell my good at Farmers Markets and the like. I do wakeup some times and say, What the hell am I doing? But I know this is the correct path and I just keep plugging away.

I have learned over the history of watching you, and as you know, I have been around for a long time. But I have learned that you are very methodical in your decisions. I have watched you as you have overcome difficulties, and as you take care of Lefty. Lefty is not a pet. He is your travel partner, your companion, and your friend. And he constantly needs you to depend on. I said all this to say that if anyone else thinks about this lifestyle, you have the very best of advice to give them. Love you videos, and I love Lefty even more.

Hi David! I went through everything you did, selling my home first and used some of the funds towards my rig. I also could not afford both lifestyles. October 8, 2020 I had the keys in the kitchen and locked the doors behind me. Very bold, courageous and leap of faith of my life and it did take me time to adjust but I have always loved it. Only at Christmas time I remember my beautiful home and melancholy but it passes. You did a great job speaking about this. People need to understand it is a commitment and you will have troubles. You literally take one day at a time. And I feel I have grown so much in my confidence and self assuredness. Kuddos!! I agree with you 100 percent! ((I’m the lady with the white van and 3 dogs, lol)

I lived in my RV for 8 years before going on the road to make sure I could do this. I did lots of research. Once I came to Quartzsite and had solar installed, I can boondock with no problem. Now, I’ve been full-time for a year, and I’m loving it! I found a great summer job in West Yellowstone!

Thank You David... For many years (mid-70's mid-2000's) I lived and traveled all over America in several different RV styles.. Truck Camper, 5th wheel, Class A, RV trailer, Chevy Van,... Now in my 80's I really miss and long for those days, living that type of life. Almost every day I watch videos of folks like you and I dream of selling my home and buying a Class C and start traveling again... but the bottom line is... I'm scared.. My body is worn out and my vision is 50 % of what it used to be, so I know I'd be a fool to actually give up what I have and try to relive those younger days... So thanks to you and the other "You Tubers", Eric, Kevin, Ausa, Slim, plus a dozen more and of course Bob Wells, who allow me to relive my "Glory Days" through your videos. You have no idea how much it means to older folks like myself. John Harrelson Carson City, NV

We have different seasons of our lives. We learn so much about ourselves as we go through each season. We also cannot fight the changes that happen. We have to learn from each of them and when we look back on them we realize they were where we needed to be at the time. We also learn that things in our lives do not necessarily last forever. I am retired and living where I always swore that I would not live again. Circumstances brought me back here and this is where I am supposed to be at this time in my life. I hope that you find the happiness for you and Lefty that you are seeking.

Good to hear the water is getting your gall bladder going in the right direction. :-) As for your extra space needed for hobbies and such, have you thought of picking up a cheap trailer to build into a shop (hobbies, tools, and fixing rigs, etc.)? Perhaps something with a toy hauler drop down back door.

Amount of water needs vary by person. My doc recommended FOR ME to check urine color. Clear=water consumption a bit high. Dark=not enough,. Should be slight yellow tint like canola oil or even lighter. Reminded me that too much water is as bad as not enough.

I’m going into my 5th year of van life. It took about 2 yrs to figure out how to do it my way. And I don’t see an end to it even though I’ve looked at property. I keep coming back to how much I enjoy this lifestyle! I’ve not had the “challenges “ I hear others talk about and am grateful. Only saying this because our experiences are so different as nomads. Thanks for the balanced perspective! 🎉

You’re probably the first person that spoke honestly about challenges and enjoyment of full-time RV, or even part-time go back to their homebase. Everything that you have shared with us is definitely a great value to the ones that want to head out or the ones that are already out doing what you do. One thing about the gallbladder you need to drink filtered water or bottled water which I think you do. Also, what will help you buy a couple bottles of Pedialyte get the generic dollar so cheaper and drink half of that or maybe a quarter of a day it really helps with dehydration and it helps all around.

Thank you for such an inciteful video. I had fantasized about a nomad life because I have bouts of wanting to run away from my current life. Some days are just so fast paced and weeks just zoom by in the blink of an eye. Its times like that when I just want to escape and be alone with my thoughts. Listening to your words of wisdom has centered me back to reality that I can only fantasize and live vicariously through others RU-vid videos. It is my safest bet. On another note, I find myself watching your videos for Lefty's vocalizations with sneezes.

Pleased to see you both are doing well. & you are feeling better. I would like to add this to the discussion. As a retired OTR long haul trucker. And coming from a family that owned a campground for over 25 years. I've been longing for this all my life. Been involved in hobbies that fit like a key l. Rock & gem & fossil collecting since I was a kid. Now I'm planning on adding amateur gold prospecting too. Guess what I'm saying is living confined, being mobile, again. And getting back out there will be my life long dream. All those years of passing by places I couldn't park a big rig in. Just to see them. Is finally going to come to be soon. Still building my rig. Had to make several changes. But I've thought everything through & believe I'll be prepared for any situations that could arise. My van is 41 years old. But mechanically it's all brand new. From rubber to engine. My cargo trailer is a fully livable home. Or soon will be. My power, H20, set up sewer, & garage is so well planned out. I believe I could survive 45 days or more. Boondocking. Be safe guys. Hopefully we will cross paths at sometime in the future. I guess what I was trying to convey. People need to really be prepared for this lifestyle. If watching RU-vid videos is your only research. You could be in for a major shock. If they've never been camping or traveled long distances. And by camping I mean. In a tent in the great outdoors for any length of time. More than just a night or 2. I'm talking at least a week or more. Several times. Able to survive nature's wrath. Then this could not be for them. You have to be prepared for everything. This includes your mental strength just as much as physical needs. DO NOT BELIEVE WHAT EVERYONE ELSE SAY or what you see in videos. Nature is very unforgiving.

Hi David and Lefty. I drove over the road til I retired at 50yrs old. (13years ago)I sold my place and bought a class A motorhome. Lived in it for a while but had a relapse in my cancer and my elderly parents needed physical assistance so I sold it and stayed with them to provide them the mobility and assistance they need. After going through treatment and going back into remission while here, my cancer has once again returned and I'll start treatment in a couple of weeks. But none of this is keeping me from planning to get back out there. I'm saving and waiting to finish treatment again. So my goal is that in about 18 months I'll be ready to purchase an ambo this time and get back out there. My years in a truck and living in the class A has prepared me well for the challenges of the road. I eagerly await my return. Until then I'll do it vicariously through you. I really enjoy your channel. In the mean time I garden and assist my parents. Take care be safe.

Thank you for another down to earth video. After several years nearly totally bedridden due to a horrid side effect of a medicine. I used those bedridden years to research on two things. One was extended fasting ,the other was nomadic living. After finally fasting for 40 days with only water,my health began to improve enough that I decided I was leaving my low income apartment and hospital bed. When my 3 adult children said,"mom you don't have an RV." My reply was I have a RAV 4,so son ,while your taking out seats to build me a bed,if it makes you feel better take the "A" out of RAV,and now I have an RV. " lol I loved every minute of that year out of a hospital bed,and on the road! Sadly I had a relapse with my health which was causing my legs and arms trouble in functioning as well as temporary blindness. I had to quit driving and I donated my RAV 4. I had to go back into low income housing and once again bedridden for the most part and have 2 caregivers. So I live vicariously through people like yourself.I am 73 years old and do not foresee in hope of ever living the life I hoped for in more ways than one. But, I have my Golden miniture Labradoodle, his name is Teddy.Making the best out of life that I can.watching others living out their lives,at least helps me not get as depressed at times.

I think people have unrealistic ideas of the lifestyle. Doing anything that’s new will be difficult at first. I love traveling and some of my best life stories have happened in a bad situation in the RV. People have to have a little grit. If they don’t they won’t make it. Also, I respect people who try and then give up. At least they tried and now won’t have regrets. I think having a pet also helps a lot. 🐶

David, I just finished the video. You did an excellent job and I mean excellent job encapsulating what you wanted to say. I watch some of these videos of Van people and they are constantly trying to prove how much fun it is and every video is this elaborate production of them you know waving their arms and I’m here I’m there, and that’s great. Some of that’s great but it actually gets aggravating when they don’t show the real part of it because there’s nothing wrong with the real day-to-day life like you show it’s awesome and then look what it’s done to you like you said your needs now are much less for a homebase. I have two homes in Phoenix and I very much has been on my mind for now about a year That I want to get a smaller place maybe on the outskirts of town couple hours from a major city, where I’m self-sufficient, and I don’t need to raise cattle and live off the land but I’d like to have a well and solar. You know I’m worried about if something goes down like we have an extended power outage whether it’s naturally caused or from a terrorist, I’m really worried about civil unrest people are gonna go crazy we saw what happened in Covid. They’re going to go nuts I don’t wanna be right in the mist of it And on top of that I really want some community so I’ve been thinking would there be a way to build a small community for people that may be nomads or they’re done being nomads and they want a small place maybe if I bought 100 acres and divide it up into little 5 acre parcels or whatever and I don’t know I’m talking out loud here but this is all been going through my mind. I’ll be done I know it’s a long message but I just wanted to let you know this is a great video. Thank you as always.

Thank you for your comment - I was bumbling on trying to convey my feelings on this topic so I'm glad I came across:) Your idea of a community area I'd excellent - I hope that I can get us set up somewhere with a home base where Lefty can make his home :)

@@TheCampulanceMan you should check out Rio Verde. It’s a little community north of fountain Hills Arizona. Fountain Hills is in far north east Phoenix. I lived in fountain Hills for 4 years and I really liked it. It felt like a Mayberry had a real small town feel, but just on the other side of the mountains were Scottsdale and everything you could want. Rio Verde is another 5 to 10 miles north of fountain Hill so you’re really kind of secluded but you’re only 40 minutes from Scottsdale. so you’re secluded enough in the area area is similar to court site but I think prettier but it’s desert but you’re still close enough to the greater Phoenix area if you need to be for health reasons or to catch a commercial flight. Also, there are some water issues out there but if you bought some land and you could have a well, that might make it all the better as the land will be cheaper. The water issues had to do with Scottsdale supplying re-over a water and then they decided not to supply water any longer. They’re working somehow. I’m not sure the details.. PS, sorry about any typos I use talk to text.

Hi David. I've been watching your vids from the begining and and I've finally caught up with you. What a journey. I don't want to go all Mr. Spock on you, but it's been fascinating. We found little things to do the 5 months we were out there. We spent a lot of money because we were in retirement trip mode. We will do things differently when we come back. Right now , the rv needs 2400.00 in tires . People need to think about that when buying whatever they buy ( costs of upkeep on the rig ).

I can fully relate to todays topic. I`ve been on the road since Oct 22 I have thoroughly enjoyed it 10 states Mexico many miles. Slowing down now and have not looked back. 65 yrs old now and plan to continue as long as i can. It is getting more and more expensive to go back the other way. So always keeping on my mind. Not going back to work is not an option for me so for now ill just keep on trucking & enjoy the journey....

In exploring this lifestyle. In my research, I’ve discovered remaining in connection with people is essential, having purpose, ‘projects! I am an Ambivert leaning toward one side more often than the other. It was suggested I rent various types of rigs, spend time in nature before making such an investment. And the medical / dental are a concern. Van repairs are an issue that are inevitable. My family is spread throughout the nation so I’m looking forward to visiting. Safety is a true concern these days!

How much more space do you think would work for your traveling needs? Are you thinking a medium duty ambulance? A schoolie? Maybe just a trailer for your rig to pull could give you what you are looking for?

Hey David, When I started watching your videos I was still a caretaker for my mother, and I started building an ambulance to enjoy once retirement came. I figured I had 10 years. My mother recently passed away and now I am free to make more of my own decisions. I still have 10 years until retirement, but I am considering selling the house and buying some raw land and living in the Ambo until I can get a little shack built on that land. I would still be commuting back and forth to the city for the 3 day (in office) work week. I have a considerable amount of fear about it, mostly centered on the lack of hot showers and being able to just open the door and send the little dog into the backyard to do his business. I am sure I will get past this fear and make it to the other side. Happy Travels to you!

Thank you so much for sharing. I already have my own rig nearly done. It's scary selling the house but if I can get it sold this summer I look forward to being in Quartzsite all next winter. I have to get away from the stress of the business world and working 60 - 70 hours a week. Finally reached a point I can't take it anymore. I'm retiring in May and it'll take a few months or so to get things straightened out to where I can leave.

I’ve been watching you for about 2 yrs now and it’s been great! My wife and I left our home state of Colorado and moved to Texas in a 5th wheel rv. It’s cheaper in Texas but we’re both on SSDI and are limited on funds. We love it here. Watching you and other you tubers make the whole nomad experience eye opening. The ups, the downs, the crack ups. But it’s all,of you nomads that make this enjoyable and not to sugar coat it. Thanks. By the way what happened to your partner in crime from the sugar beet harvest? 1 question. What would be your breaking point of saying either no more, or even maybe staying closer to New York?

Husband and I have been part-time RVing most of the year SINCE 1998. We found having 2 livable vehicles is a wise key 🔑 for times when vehicle repairs are called for. Our Conversion Van is comfortably outfitted for any temporary living needs, roadtripping, sightseeing, boondocking, etc. But our Class A Motorcoach is our primary full-on RVing vehicle for campgrounds, state parks, and longer extended stays along our journeys. We find that most places have a commonality for things to do, so each year we look at our Travel Calendar and make our plans based on type of activities we want to do during each month-to-month. Whether that's fishing, kayaking, antiques, car shows, sporting events, Rockhounding, Sea-shelling, etc. Then we plan where to find those activities regardless of where we are located at any given time (weather allowing of course). We, simply put, do what makes us feel alive and fulfilled. If it doesn't, we move on and seek 💯 to make it happen 💯 elsewhere across the vast roadways out there. For us, too much planning can quickly spoil a great adventure since even the best laid plans are ALWAYS subject to changes. We're NOT RICH (far from it), we're NOT YOUNG of age (70 plus years old), we move SLOW as we Go Forward. BUT WE ARE always full-on seeking out and planning for the things that bring us the MOST ENJOYABLE 😊 HAPPINESS. That's out KEYS 🔑 to the RVing Lifestyle. Hopefully this might help others as they venture out there on the Roadways.

This video really stuck with me. I'm just a few years younger than you, the only one I really talk to is in the Navy. I bought land in Wyoming a couple years ago and plan to move out there when I retire. Just my mom left, so I have to be here for her, but like you said, that won't last forever. It will he a huge culture shift, but the way I see it, I'm pretty much by myself here, so what could be that different living 1200 miles from my hometown. Just a totally new life.

Hi bud looking for a red for a couple years I wanted to build, but my health got bad and I couldn’t do the work but I’m amazed now in the last eight months to a year how many rigs are available. I’ve looked at many of them at least over a dozen And the pictures look great online however when you get up close they don’t look like what it is in the picture. They’re also asking a heck of a lot for their rigs, almost like they need the money to restart their lives from abandoning living in on the road.

That was a really special episode David. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the nomad lifestyle. I toy with those very thoughts myself. Should I? Or should I not? Will I be happier or not? I go out camping most weekends to figure out if it's really right for me to do full-time or stay put in the situation I am in currently. I rent a small Casita from my folks plus I am their main caregiver. Plus work full time. Sometimes I really want to just break free, full time on my own. And then I think about all the things I would miss. So you got me thinking about it more. Thank you. I look at yours and Leftys situation and I think, how wonderful would that be. To just be with your dog full time and have lazy days, with of course other days where there's lots to be done like work on your rig, going to town etc. Even have neighbors to visit with, which is so nice. Now I'm rambling on. I think life is give and take. And right now with this economy it's hard to be sure if you should make a move or not. You know what I mean?? Anyway, I love how you zoom in on our Beautiful flag here and there. I'm such a patriotic American girl. God Bless you and Lefty and God Bless America. I also love that you're a Family guy. You love your Daughter so much, and your Mom and stepdad. You have a lot of integrity David. Have a Beautiful week. 🙏🇺🇲🗽✌️

I like having the freedom to travel and see spectacular places. I stay on the road a minimum of 6 months in my short Class C which feels like my studio apartment - I love it!. I would like to be gone from my stix 'n' bricks a month or 2 longer but my husband gets lonely... he doesn't like to travel & prefers to garden. I've been doing this for 13 years and it's still exciting; I dread the day I have to give up my drivers license☹ ☮

I used to hire and train truck drivers. I always tried to get them to understand it takes a full year to give the trucking lifestyle a chance. In a year especially the first year, you learn a lot usually the hard way. After that, it becomes a lot easier. It is called paying your dues. The other thing I learned from training new people was that they often do not listen to everything you say. They filter out the negative parts. I said the same thing during interviews like you said trucking and living on the road is not for everybody. In fact, I had a presentation I gave to large classes at truck driving schools. It was very negative in parts where I talked about worst-case scenarios. I recorded the presentation and when someone was quitting and they claimed I never told them the bad stuff I had them watch my presentation.

The first year can be a real challenge - I've seen a lot of people decide its not for them in that first year. I know it was tough for us but after some rig changes and sticking with it, we got comfortable and into our routines. Now it's something I barely think about - I wake up sometimes and for a few seconds I forget that we're even sleeping in a truck.
