In this talk, Dan Currell provides an ancient solution to a complex problem examining why people are jerks and what we can do about it.
Dan Currell is an Executive Director at CEB, working mainly in the areas of Legal, Risk & Compliance, Finance, Quality, Operations and Innovation & Strategy. A common theme in much of his work is the significance of culture in organizational success. Mr. Currell has presented CEB research to around 1,000 executive and board audiences globally.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Reporting a problem is usually where your position becomes problematic. We have a conformist society, designed to reward jerks. Smart people are jerks.

Being nice gets you nowhere; it just makes people jealous. Jealous of kindness and jealous of success. Most people are fairly horrible. and you can't say it. I live for my music and I care more about my TV than most people. It gives me more pleasure and 'good information'.....

This needs to be reposted with the audio corrected at the end! Otherwise I think it's a relevant and informative talk. People act like jerks because we live in a world of imperfect, broken human beings. People must choose to do the right thing it starts with the individual. Only the Gospel promises to change people from the heart. From the inside out. Companies can only do so much and if there isn't integrity at the top, how can there be integrity among employees. But this conversation is a good place to start.

So many stats and so much chatter here. Bottom line is: Accountability, follow through, and follow up is the only way to change behavior habits in an organization.

HOw about the manager that won't do their job, so you can't get anything done, so you end up doing their job AND YOUR job then getting grilled for it? How about that supervisor who evaluates your performance based on what other people do or fail to do and it goes in your permanent record 5 times a year? How about that idiot who hired you and then does everything they can to make your life difficult? How about that coworker who you have to work with who can't remember important dates and you are constantly having to watch out for them like they are a little kid or a senile old fart? Or that team member who refuses to communicate with you about the project as the deadline looms large? How about the secretary who shrieks, howls, blabs, and cackles so loudly all day long that you can't concentrate on your work? or that annoying asshole who pops into your work area and starts babbling a bunch of nonsense so you lose focus on your task? How about that HR person who refuses to help you deal with that workplace harassment and instead threatens you with trouble if you push things? How about that other supervisor who is gone 80% of the time and refuses to answer any of your questions when you happen to catch them? Or how about that fucker who accuses you of breaking a printer when you didn't and runs around spreading said lie to everyone? Or that old person who has been there 100 years and still doesn't know a damn thing? Or how about you getting no training or proper supervision and then realizing everyone has talked shit about your lack of skills and even your character behind your back for years? And finally, not least, how about that person they hired in from outside who knows absolutely nothing about the job/skills/processes required to be your supervisor when you know you are way better qualified?

I think the real question when it comes to a work environment is why does office politics exist? Many reasons for that, BS rolls downhill, nepotism, preferential association over qualification, lack of ethics, usury, abuse of power. For the social question of why people abuse other people? Because they know no one will do anything to stop them. To confront someone who directly about a negative practice on how they deal with others around them can get physical which can lead to legal issue where the problem maker does not get corrected but rather protected and also because of the culture going through the right channels to solve a problem can backfire and still protect the problem maker.

Yes you hit the nail right on the head. I work for the US government my entire life in law-enforcement. All I can say is everything went to the fair haired boys. The rest went to the protected species which I would call women and minorities. It sure didn’t leave much for the rest of us white clown boys. The thing that got me the most Was how quickly the protected species and fair-haired boy’s pick up on their special considerations and the fact that they just get so damn to me. Same for the fair haired girls, the nastiest people I ever met my life and that includes a few rapists and killers I’ve had dealings with. It’s like the minute they understand that they’re untouchable they just have to flaunt it everywhere they go. Then they always seem to get worse over time. I never could quite understand why anybody who had no pressures and should be easy enough to get along and had to be such a miserable SOB.

It's very hard to hear but I think he said, it's free. Meaning Jesus's words from the Gospel of Luke regarding do unto others as you would have them do unto you? Or the Golden Rule? But I could have misheard because the audio is terrible at the end.

My last manager told coworkers he thought it was funny I got covid because I was so afraid of getting it. I reported it to higher ups and nothing happened because he's friends with them. He also put something illegal on a performance evaluation and there were no consequences.
