Love that you put this out. I see so many people hate on S30V, S45VN, D2, 154CM for no reason other than they heard or read that 1 stat is superior ❤

To be fair S30V can be a bitch and a half to deburr. And d2 can be a bit finicky to sharpen, but it offers so much edge retention at such a low price. s45 is fucking amazing, basically elmax.

I like all except D2. I have knives in D2, so don't hate it. But for me, 154CM has the same toughness, negligible difference in edge retention, and much better corrosion resistance, so it makes more sense.

haha I am going to hate on D2 as well because it's a pain to sharpen and wears stones quickly I am not a fan of the mega super steels for the same reason. My favorites S30V, S35VN, S45VN, 154CM, and Nitro V too they nail the balance on ease of sharpening and corrosion resistance.

@jacobgebman4666 5 дней назад
I've carried my trusty Griptillian in 154CM for a very good long while. Most of its time was in my pocket while in pharmacy where it would cut plastic straps holding medication shipments. It's also been in my pocket while working on cars, and doing nearly every daily task around. I've honestly never oiled or really done much to maintain the blade but it's had no corrosion whatsoever and after nearly 10 years or so (of admittedly fairly light use) it's probably finally ready to be thoroughly sharpened. It's for that reason I love 154CM. I've been able to keep it tucked away in a pocket and essentially forget about it and it just keeps right on trucking. It's been a fantastic steel for me over the years and I've recently purchased a few more knives in the steel to give the benchmade a break lol. It's not the newest or the greatest of super steels but for me (a fairly average knife user) it's been great.

That is a very important point. If you have a 65hrc blade and you bring out your 20$ amazon whetstones, you will have a frustrating evening. If you go hard you have to buy expensive tools to maintain it and "learn" how to use them. You don't give it to your scissor sharpener at the local Mall. Same goes with cars. If your car is incredibly fast, you must learn to handle it properly.

Not even remotely true tho D2 and S35VN take about the same amount of time to sharpen WITH THE RIGHT TOOLS Use a good diamond stone, not a 20$ “whet stone” from Amazon And you’ll be surprised at how fast you can sharpen a hard steel Why buy a 100$, 200$ 500$+ knife Then sharpen it on a 15$ sharpening stone Like buying a Lambo and cheaping out on the tires

Many people don’t realize you can only strengthen 1-2 attributes of steel while having to sacrifice another of the three, edge retention, toughness, and corrosion res; you can’t maximize all three. Maybe a better rephrase idk. Edit, people also need to look at Spyderco’s steel chart on their web and see how similar cpm20cv, cpm s30v, cpms90v, and magnacut are in terms of composition. S90v being the oldest of the four made in the 90’s has the most basic composition but shares all of it’s elements in the other three steels described and has the highest vanadium amount. S90v also shares the same chromium amount with s30v. While inferior in amounts of vanadium to s90v, Magnacut also shares the same vanadium amount as 20cv and s30v. Just saying there is lots of similarities between these four.
@bornonthebattlefront4883
@bornonthebattlefront4883 5 дней назад
That’s why S90V for example (side note, why don’t we get S110V blades? It’s tougher and more stainless than S90V, while not losing too much edge retention) S90V at 60 HRC, will have like 35% higher edge retention then 20CV at the same hardness But 20CV is like 25% more stainless and 10% tougher then S90V It’s all a trade off Most people don’t need the endless toughness of a 56 HRC low alloy steel, so losing 50% of the toughness of a blade isn’t all that big of a deal when you increase Carbon and Chromium carbides Then there are other carbide makers such as Vanadium and Molybdenum, which are both significantly better at their respective roles over Carbon and Chromium Needing less of the more expensive materials, but getting similar edge retention and stainless properties That’s why Magnacut is so tough It has fewer total carbides, while using more expensive carbides in higher amounts then normal, to get a tougher blade as well as the other elements That and added nitrogen and niobium carbides make the blade tougher We are getting closer and closer to the best possible material science

Wait… so when a new steel is created, the steels that came before don’t cease to function?! Wish I hadn’t thrown all my D2 knives away!! 😆 It’s funny how the average knife user will obsess over a steel’s composition but doesn’t obsess over much more important things - like the tires they put on their automobile for example (which are used FAR more often and on which their lives and the lives of their families actually depend). Such is the power of influence and marketing. It’s an upside down world we live in!

Yeah, I hate that I had to throw away my dad's old Buck 110 when came out. That old Buck skinned a lot of deer, elk, and pronghorn, it used to do every job asked of it and was easy to sharpen and maintain, but when came out, it suddenly just stopped cutting and then dissolved into dust. I hate it when that happens.

I’ll admit I initially started to get caught up in steel composition when I first got into pocket knives, which wasn’t all that long ago. I have a lot of hobbies though and always end up deep down a rabbit hole so I did tons of reading and got a better grasp on things. Even now knowing what I know I still catch and have to remind myself of two main things, 1. there are many factors that affect the properties of a blade and 2. many of the “lower end” high quality steels are amazing. The single biggest thing for me was learning how to sharpen a knife really well, that relieved the bias of prioritizing edge retention so highly. I now get just as excited for new sharpening stones as I do for a new knife or instead of spending time hunting for a new knife I’ll go spend time seeing how good of an edge I can get on my current knives. I still understand people who get caught up in collecting and owning different knives/steels, it’s all fun if you can remember to not take things too seriously.
@zdbrownie

I think the issue with this rant really comes down to two main issues. First is that most knife people know s30v is more than good enough for the vast majority if not all pocket knife tasks. MC is cool if the price is right but I love s35vn for most of my folders personally. Rarely would be able to notice a difference between s30v and s35vn in all honesty. The issue is then putting premium price tags on s30v g10 type knives. Bodacious for example, I'm sure its a great capable enough knife but $280 for s30v and flat g10 is, imo, at least $80 to $100 overpriced. Especially when Kershaw has well priced MC and aluminum knives available. Wheres the disconnect? That is a very valid complaint. The Second issue is most knife collectors aren't really knife users. Thats not a dig just facts the people who work in an office and don't camp or do outdoors things aren't using a knife as an actual tool. So it then does become about the newest greatest steel available. It's pocket jewelry to show off to other knife people first a tool second. They do want to phase out s30v for that reason.

My experience has been that even using some of the more got to have steels such as 20cv, s90v, maxamet are all wonderful steels for what they are designed for, however as a professional first responder when I look at what I do and what I need a blade for I generally have 2 go to steels…s30v and magnacut.. I find those to be very well balanced with good toughness…and quite honestly in my line of work I’m still not pushing those steels to their limits…the interesting thing is both of these steels is they were specifically designed for cutlery…and s30v is very similar to magnacut with the exception being in corrosion resistance…when heat treated correctly of course…now I may be in the minority but when I get asked what I use and recommend from my experience I recommend s30v from a good manufacturer known for doing heat treating and geometry correctly…my daily carry is either a manix 2 …shaman or a griptillian

On day one with the Maxamet Sage 1 I damaged the blade tip cutting straps around pavers. Must have caught a piece of gravel that was wedged between the strap and the paver. Sure, I have many different steels and I enjoy the variety but I don't like to feel bullied into buying the newest steels just to have them! If you think about it, America was built with knives and tools made from far less quality steels! Lots of rough country was conquered and many trails were blazed with plain old carbon steel an somehow we made it to where we are now! If you want to be a true collector...enjoy new steel offerings but don't be afraid to embrace tried and true steels! They will still serve you well.

Just as a reminder, high hardness steels are stronger than low hardness. Hardness and strength are directly correlated. Its just that high strength and low toughness skips right past bending right to shattering with no warning so they seem like they break more easily when you would have stopped prying when your low strength steel felt like it was bending. Its a false argument that they break more easily.

I remember when knives with D2, 154CM or ATS-34 blades were considered PREMIUM knives. S30V was a major upgrade to those steels which relegated them to obscurity. I much prefer knives with S30V, 154CM/ATS-34, or D2 knives. Knives with these steels can be cheaply made, and the steels’ best heat treatment are well known and documented. Give me a knife made with 154CM/ATS-34 over 14C18N any day. Give me an S30V knife over an S35VN knife any time.

My Sage 5 with carbon fiber scales in S30V gets the most pocket time. I sometimes wonder why CPM even made S35VN and S45VN, given how little difference there is between these 3 steels. I guess S35VN and S45VN are slightly tougher, but S30V is probably slightly more corrosion resistant and holds an edge slightly better. And then Spyderco had SPY27 created, which seems almost identical to S45VN. Seems like a lot of R&D for minimal returns.

I love S30v. That said, new steels sell knives. Personally I prefer the easier to sharpen steels over the super hard high edge retention steels.

I remember when BG42 was used on Sebenzas and customs and I never see it anymore. I used own a $400 Dosier custom folder in D2. I used to have a double lock back traditional knife by PJ Tomes in 12C27, I bought around 2001 and it was the most expensive knife I ever bought at $600. Realistically, it was a gents knife and it would have lasted for years with that steel if used properly. Wonder steels are great, but most of are not going to come close to wearing out our expensive knives. One trend I do love, however, is 154cm on inexpensive knives. Kizer uses it on lots of inexpensive knives.

I’ve been collecting for close to 30 years (mostly in the sub $150 range), I can remember when S35VN was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! Way out of my price range! Of course I can remember when it started dropping as well, I bought as many knives with that steel as I could afford! Truly if my collection could consist of 14c, S35 and Elmax…I’d be totally happy! Like most collectors I have enough knives to keep a solid monthly rotation, I don’t even come close to using the potential of 14c…let alone S35 or Elmax. But I do enjoy the variety.

I am not saying that S30V sucks but I personally don't like it. I have cleaned and sharpened a lot of knives for friends and family and S30V almost always needs some rust cleaned off and chips sharpened out. I've seen much fewer issues with S35VN. It's edge retention isn't quite as good but it's so much easier to work with and doesn't rust or chip nearly as easily. I wouldn't be upset if S30V became less commonly used.

Great rant and thanks for giving s30v and family some love. Given proper care, its ballance makes it one of the all-time greats. I have two chefs knives one s35 and the other s45. Two of the best knives I own. The steels are perfect for their designe brief.

Magnacut is about 3x as tough as S30V with the same edge retention. S90V has about 33% more edge retention than S30V with the same toughness. Sorry, it's obsolete.

@Jmon808 Mostly because they are used to working that steel, and it's cheaper than the better steels. The only real benefit to the consumer is that it's slightly cheaper.

This rant made me think of the Spyderco Subvert and why I didn’t want to go near it until the sprint run came out. Was it because S30V was unacceptable and they finally made a version in CPM-20CV? Nope. It’s because I loathed the abomination that was the orange G10 scales on the standard version and jumped with both feet when they offered it in carbon fiber. S30V would have been fine. Hell, G10 in another color would have been fine, too, or some flavor of micarta… don’t care… anything but the orange.

The only time I've had a problem with s30 is on my Shaman; factory edge was super chippy, probably just overheated, but after putting a new edge on it? Great. Now, would I love a Smock in rex or cruwear? Yes please and thank you, but s30 is better than great on it. D2, nitro v, 154cm, 14c28n, etc all get as much pocket time at work as the rest if I enjoy the knife. On a different note, all but one knife I've given away has been s35 though. Not sure why I added that. Ah, well. Happy Sunday.

Blade steel matters not if your edge angle is incorrect. People just want something new for that momentary satisfaction that just leaves them wanting more. This will never be answered but I do wonder what percentage of knives being produced get out to use. I am fortunate to have a job that I can put knives to use. But even then it is not hard use. Been super happy with 15v. Can bust straps off of lifts of lumber and still be sharp enough to whittle with. As does s30v though.

No. The cost is coming down dramatically on everything (save for S30V) so there's still plenty of reason for people to pick these steels up. Also S90V still destroys magnacut for edge retention. That steel is still in its own class.

Always a great discussion MC. I must point out that you are part of that "problem" by pointing out different steels in knives and how you do it. If you look at your Maxace Black Mirror video, you specifically point out the quality of the steel for the price. Same thing with your Kunwu Padre review when you say "This steel is usually reserved for much more expensive knives". I've heard you say that in several videos. I'm not saying it's bad, not in the least, but whether you like it or not you are an influencer when it comes to viewer purchases. I've purchased several knives based on your particular review and I'm sure I'm not alone. I'm part of the "problem" because I'm sick of M390 and would like to see more S90V, lol.
@Naptosis

What difference do you find in those two steels? And how do you think S90V benefits you more? If you don't mind me asking.
@timothy9596
@timothy9596 5 дней назад
@@Naptosis Like most folks around here, including MC, I'm a casual knife user. Meaning I open packages, cut up cardboard boxes and other light duty things. I've had bad luck with M390 when it comes to edge retention. I'm sure that has to do with bad heat treats as MC has pointed out on several occasions. S90V is easier to heat treat and holds an edge 3-4 times as long. At least in my experience.

The steels in reference didn't become expensive/popular after I pointed out that they were expensive/popular. I don't have any effect on the cost/popularity of this stuff. S90V/M390/ZDP have actually come DOWN in price since my presence on RU-vid. There were simply nowhere near the same number of S30V blades out there. I think this comment is off base, but I appreciate it anyway. My point was that S30V/D2 etc are still great. Definitely not outdated.

I will buy almost any composition of steel (440c 👍🏾). Using knives extensively at work (contractor) I'm very conscious of which steel I use for which task, and after work use can be almost anything if I like the design. BUT, I am one that is very conscious of how much money pay for what. I will use anything that is priced accordingly, and I'm sure that's the area where my opinion may differ from other's. Btw, I love it when a good steel falls out of favor with the community and the price ends up reflecting that😂

I love forums where people complain about 154cm or S30v on a Leatherman Multitool. No understanding whatsoever about what great steels they both are for a multitool. I don't blame them. This whole Magacut train is a good example. It is a REALLY great steel, but it's like people have tunnel vision for it the past year or two. I think it's a case of trends becoming even bigger trends because of feed back to retailers from customers dialled up and pumped back out to customers and then fed back to retailers and so on.

Haha. I've never heard anyone (other than myself) call another a troglodyte. Tbh, I never knew that word until seeing an episode of Big Bang Theory. Now I use that word frequently. Lmfao. I cut a lot of cardboard and cut open a lot of ingredient bags on a daily basis and my 3 most used knives are the MSI (M390MK), the Microtech Auto Stitch (M390), and my ZT0562CF (CPM20CV). For me, edge retention is what I tend to gravitate to when it comes to blade steel and those 3 have done just fine for my daily needs and they never really need anything other than a good stropping once they start dulling out.

What I wonder about is cost of different steels. Buck makes some knives with the old 420hc and its $50. But if you want a better steel like s35vn is $140. I understand its different and in demand but does it really cost $100 more? Its not like there is more steel in one than the other. Is it just manufacturing costs or is it just perceived value?
