Photographers want a platform to interact and showcase their work. They don’t want the ads, suggested posts, broken algorithm and crappy reach. As long as users don’t start uploading short reels/videos and turn it into what Instagram is now. VERO is a much better choice than Instagram right now. Also, you can see your photo is higher quality and don’t have to worry about the 4:5 crop
Unfortunately it won’t be long before they start charging if they plan on keeping uncompressed large files on their server. It’s going to boil down to economic feasibility either run ads or charge for the service. Memory costs money.
I installed Vero. I did like the overall feel and everything. Only really big downside is that non of my friends have it… because I want mostly share with my friends, sharing with random unknown people is less important for me….
Great Video!! I too have just started using Vero and its a breath of fresh air for photographers and for people who just want to bring the social back to social media!!! no algorithm and no adverts, absolutely love it, seeing work from people I actually follow and not just bombarded with short videos all the time! Yeah I hope it is here to stay! ☺👌🏼
I just started using Vero around 4 days ago. So far, better than Instagram. I only see what I want to see... no ads at the moment. I am new but wish (maybe it is already) there is a group style instead of just hashtag or a special tag page where you can get stream of your favourite tag. Other than that, it has been a good journey. One complaint is since a lot of ppl trying it now, it's a bit laggy sometimes.
I think you've discovered the problem (if you can call it that) with a platform like Vero. its a platform for creators, its what you want to see as a creator. I'm not knocking that by any means, but what makes a platform like instagram popular is that its a platform for the consumer.. the mindless scroller, the sitting at a table drinking tea mindlessly consuming the media they're being fed. Vero can certainly be successful in its own right, but I don't personally see if being the next big thing, but that may not be the goal anyway.
I agree, I doubt it’ll be the multi-billion dollar business Instagram is, but I see that as a positive to be honest, because it should help them stick to their goal
If the only thing Vero does is keep Instagram honest and prevent more stupid changes from happening, I'll be happy. There's definitely a mass exodus happening right now from IG to Vero
I was about to post the same thing. If you want other photographers to see your work, fine. But if you're seeking clients, a platform where only creators exist and no consumers, will be a waste of time for you. Thing is, consumers won't go where there is not content. So the more creators go to Vero, and say "Follow me on Vero" on Instagram (the same way Vine creators moved their followers to Instagram), then the more Vero becomes a viable platform. Eventually, when Vero becomes very successful, it's going to end up like Instagram. You post something, and it gets buried, because many people are posting as well.. Not just you.
That's a very good point. Trouble is the consumer wants to consume shit and not art. Instagram can go all TikTok if it wants, the people that want that don't want to see our art work.
I'm not seeing the problem. My goal isn't to get my work seen by the mindless scroller (which it isn't be seen on IG anyway, as of late). I want people who are looking to enjoy our art to see it - those who actually care. What benefit is there in the former seeing it?
Thank you for that information I saw Peter McKinnon talk about and you are the third person I heard talk about Vero, I will definitely check it out and try it. Thank you 😊 👍
Great video, mate. I am just getting into photography, and you are 100% right. As Facebook and Instagram work on more ads, I see more people will leave and find another platform to talk to people.
Signed up to the app today. Clean, easy to use, has different tabs for different things (photo/video/others). Also the photos looked more...high quality? less compression maybe? giving it a go, liked so far
Same. Also javing more traffic on my photos than I did w IG. On IG I assume at least 1/2 the likes are by fake accounts. Especially when you get comments the moment you post. Those comments saying “pot to this account”. Ya thats fake.
Been using Vero for photography for a while. Even though nobody really follows me, lol. I just think it’s a better platform and a lot more fun. It’s a really unique platform. I really appreciate the platform.
It's refreshing to see a new alternative to Instagram for photographers to showcase their work. I just made myself an account, so we'll see how this new platform pans out. Great video, Joshua!
Instagram chased after TikTok too aggressively and stop caring about its focus on photography, but just became an amped up social media platform for anything that can get more users.
I think nothing can beat having a great website where you share your work. Maybe a blog with it and then obviously your RU-vid to refer the traffic to them
Thank you for another amazing video ( tutorial) on how to become a photographer. You’re videos have been great speeding up my leaning curve and I hope to continue my progress on Vero and your channel 🤜🤛
Love Vero. I get the concerns about a lack of consumers vs creatives, but it'll always have that, especially when they start charging. And that's cool with me. We have free social media platforms that track you, and are full of toxicity, sock puppets, trollfarms and other idiocy. If there's a platform that doesn't mine data, doesn't have ads and just delivers a chronological timeline of my connections, without the toxicity that comes with anonymous free accounts I'm happy to pay for it.
I signed up a few days ago. I think it will be good for promoting our RU-vid channels as well as the photography. Look forward to seeing how it goes. Thanks for sharing. Cheers Keith
Added you. I signed up back when this first came out, 5 years ago maybe. But I left it and all other social media 3 years ago. I only ever kept Flickr. Going to give Vero another go.
Like you I made to move to vero. I like it cause it showing photos of some amazing places, photographers, artist and amazing works of creative ideas that's translate into photos. It has given me inspiration to do better photos. I'm following you and like your work. Let's keep vero for photographers
I made a VERO account rvfit and I freaking love VERO. it gives me the old instagram vibes back again and it is actually so good. Glad I am riding this wave.
I am starting to follow you. I like your content. Originally thought with the title this might be a product review of some type, but it is more of an opinion piece. Still valuable, and the comments seem to support your opinion. I will continue this journey with you and wish you well.
Thank you for posting this video. I was searching through RU-vid for advice on creating an Instagram account after years of umming and arrring about it. As a photographer with a website and Facebook accounts I have been told many times (especially my marketing consultants and "influencers") that I MUST be on Instagram to get noticed. But it seemed to me that it was a lot of faff to have to keep posting anything and everything (reformated to fit preferred Instagram format) just to keep your head above the tide of meaningless crap. And to be noticed by who? Anyway I was just about to put my toe in the water of Instagram to give it a go after a good friend (a professional musician) said "give it a go, there's nothing to loose" And then I came across this video ! So thank you. I get the impression that, like yourself, I dont want to post "reels" either so it's time to explore VERO.
Also I like that you have common sense and can understand that our “audience” on IG is not exactly the crowd we want. Id rather have other photographers seeing my photos so that I know my audience can appreciate what went into capturing that image.
I joined Vero because of this video i also followed you too . love some of your pics on there, i uploaded some of mine ( don't rip em i'm an armature ) but i think you might like the night shot one from my garden ( this is just testing for astrophotography ) quite proud of how that one turned out , up to now that is.
I think if Vero begins a paid subscription service, that would be the death of them. A platform needs followers. Any barrier to entry would be a bad move. I certainly don’t want my Vero account to only be viewed by other photographers. I want everyone’s eyes on my work. The more, the better. I’ve been on Vero now for about a couple of years. I really do hope they become really successful.
They have to either sell your data or serve you ads to maintain that. We have platforms that do that. For creatives, the subscription service could well act like a form of curation. Corporates looking for creatives showcasing their work are going to find the subscription costs trivial. The millions of randos and fake accounts aren't going to help you, they'll more than likely rip you off.
That was my thought, too. I get that it would allow them to not have ads, but a subscription service to a social media app would turn off a majority of people from joining. A lot of people might like this, since it'd weed out people who aren't fairly serious photographers from posting and clogging up the timeline.; But if the only people on it are photographers trying to showcase their own work, who's going to see your photos? That may not necessarily be a bad thing, but it would make Vero SUPER niche and definitely not an app for anyone who isn't already a somewhat established photographer
An interesting assessment of Vero and social media generally for photographers. Am now intrigued by Vero. My IG account has gone all weird with endless reels and constant repeats of photos I have seen on my timeline. Thank you for this review of Vero
I remember when VERO blew up about 4 years ago. And everybody on IG was telling everybody else to go follow them over on VERO. It was funny. VERO did look good. But it flamed out. Pretty sure this will flame out again. No consumers.
it really did flame out like so many other applications back in like 2018 or so... but the good thing is that its still around, and I am really hoping that it wont flame out this time around, but it only depends on the users I guess at the end of the day.
Helpful vid! Missed the Vero band wagon years ago but heard it was a little shady and did not like that you had to submit a request to delete your account. Hopefully it's better now. But I miss sharing my photos (reach has definitely hit a wall) and seeing people I want to follow on IG. Definitely need an alternative
This video and the way you tell your message, made me subscribe to your RU-vid channel, download the Vero app and follow you there. The app looks like what I have missed. You are a good storyteller, keep up the good work, and hope you get a lot more subscribers, cause you deserve it :)
My understanding is you will not only share your work but Vero can do what they wish it. Subscribers will have to pay to subscribe to this app eventually according to VERO. I love the UI and the images are sharper than on Instagram, but like all social media apps, once they acquire your name phone # and email address, you will never find out how they use the info.
it seems that hashtags are huge on vero, I posted a two photos without hashtags and then one with hashtags and the one with hashtags got way more eyes on it
I'd be surprised I've Peter McKinnon doesn't have some kind of vested interest in the app. Vero has been around for ages. If the app grows, it could be ok. Still don't think we really have any answers to the Instagram problem just yet.
I started on Vero 4 years ago just after it launched. It's such a better space than Instagram for sharing and building contacts with other creatives, not just Photographers. there a;most nonhe of the associated BS you get with IG which is just an added bonus for me!
I'd not heard of Vero before so I signed up. I got the sense it was like flicker; perhaps it was the likes/shares images underneath. I guess we shall see. We miss the Heather of the Highlands since we left Scotland, but we now get to take pics and paint Pigface. Pretty even if it has a rude name.
I manage the estate of a photographer, Sam Haskins, due to my own research and the endorsement of RU-vidrs I set up an estate account on Vero and the sense of being there is just ...dead...there is nothing happening, no interaction, no serious presence, no followers. See for yourself, make a list of 20 famous photographers and try to find them on Vero. I will stay loyal to the platform to give them a chance but right now there is literally nothing to inspire me. Instagram is basically saying become a TikTok'er or die. Maybe we have to dance to that tune and drive traffic back to our own websites and blogs...remember blogs?...where there's no corporate control. Some people say Twitter is an alternative to IG for artists...perhaps. Something in the Vero business model is not right and the technology is laggy.
I don’t know why Flickr isn’t more popular with photographers. Maybe it’s the cost for a Pro account which has no ads? They let you upload any size photographs in high quality.
For me personally it's rather a matter of their mobile app just not being as user friendly as for example Instagram and TikTok are. Either you need to put your work in several groups on Flickr in order to get seen, and there are only so many groups out there that are somewhat active still, or you have to play along their own stupid algorithm game in order to get into Explore.
@@jdjphotographynl agree, i think that is one of the reasons that Flickr got forgotten, relative to IG... Flickr came a few years too late to the mobile app game.. i remember thinking to myself in those early IG days, why doesn't Flickr have smart phone capability?
Hi Joshua, I'm a recent subscriber. Love the content and your natural presentation style. Is it possible to get music volume lowered? I'm getting a lot of complaints from the rest of the family, it keeps making them jump. 😅
Have also signed up. Like it but the problem I cannot solve is to change privacy of a post later if I change my mind. On my Iphone or PC app it seems not possible. The only alternative is if you want to change afterwards who sees a photograph (make it public or private) is to delete the post and upload it again. This seems crazy and a big waste of time. Or I have missed something or this feature is really needed.
Had signed up a few years ago and stopped using it. Any new app has a very difficult task to gain users. One thing I don't like about it is that one cannot look at their own profile/grid as easily as in IG. And there's a "Call" feature as one of the main features, which I think is pretty useless for such an app.
@@julieack7427 doesn't work. Right swipe opens the menu and i have to click on the profile to go to my "grid". I use Android. Not sure what you use. Even if it did work, I'd rather have it front and center. I reached out to the Veri team and they said they're adding a feature to have multiple account within the same app like IG. Maybe then we will get it featured on the main page. Imo for an app with a low userbase and with multitude of other call/messaging apps available, it's a waste of time and resources to develop calling/messaging functionality.
Subbed cause we use d same gear...and you proudly use it for work...seems these days if u don't have a Sony A7s3 or a Canon R5 u don't have a camera based on most RU-vidrs
I too just join VERO I seen the video to with Peter McKinnon and you guys are right Instagram's going down with Facebook it's time to get out and grow my handel is John Hollywood thanks for the video great stuff
The thing I don’t like is with more photography style apps that are mainly used by other photographers if u start out taking pic it ain’t gonna rly get ur work out there unless other photographers post and help u out but Instagram is potential customers and ppl who like ur work and spread it so u can make a living if of photos but they just want u to pay to grow so I’m struggling as a beginner but I’m willing to do anything at this point to get my work out there and get advice
If you’re looking to grow, slow growth is sustainable growth; so don’t worry about getting big quick, look at building a solid foundation across multiple platforms
@@TheJoshuaPeg I think he's stating in a sense if Vero is mainly all working photographers there's no business potential. Growth amongst a community of photographers is nice bc you can get inspiration or learn a new technique. Vero has been around since 2015. I had my account a few years back but it was meh. I believe they also fell onto some controversies.
This is interesting.. I think if you like something like Vero in its principle you would love to follow Cal Newport for his world of digital minimalism...
Had an account on there a few years ago, but I lost interest because there was just so little activity on there at the time, so I deleted my account. Now I have made a new account on Vero a week or two ago, let's say how things are going now. And maybe I'm skeptical, but I suppose we better enjoy Vero as long as the fun lasts, because you just know they will sooner or later also cave in when they see big buck potential.
if Vero paid me to promote their app, i would also tell all my photographers friends to move on that app 😕 I might be sinical but i don't think that Peter made a video about it without some sort of sponsorship behind it.
I don't trust people easily, but Peter is very transparent. He did say he didn't get paid by them in the same video - 09:50 "the end of instagram" - so I believe him. He has a good reputation and has a lot more to lose than what he would gain by being dishonest about that.
