Here’s what I think we as seniors need to do. I have thought about this for a year or so now. More and more seniors are having to live in a vehicle and I also am heading to that point. My plan was to get enough seniors together and donate $500 or maybe $1000 each and put that money into a pot and take that money we collect and buy a big enough piece of land and start a senior community to where we can park our vehicles and have a building just for his and hers showers with bathroom stalls in it. Make it a place where the seniors run it and maybe one day have a little food pantry in it. We could build a community well with a water filtration system on it to clean the water or have public water added. Find an area where it is somewhat warm in the winter buy not scolding hot in the summer. Find a county that would work with us is the big problem. Not a community where young homeless people live but people who has a SS income only type of place. I think it would be a big step to help ourselves. Lord knows this government is not going to help us in any way. I mean look at senior 55+ community cost at least $1500 to $2000 for a small one bedroom apartment that’s not big enough to house a family of mice. I think it would be big relief to it. I would love to start an organization to do this. I know there is men and women who knows how to do things and build these things we need to survive our fabulous golden years. I sure would like to know who came up with that saying.

@@dodgecityvanlife I think it is too. And to help with everything have people who stay help around the property and maybe give 5 to 10 percent of their monthly SS check to help keep it running. I know there is enough seniors out there that we could build us a community. Southern Colorado has land really cheap. I’ve seen it there for 5 acres around $5k and from what restrictions is you can live in an RV but you have to have a well drilled and sewage system. That was like a year or two when I looked at that.

I agree. If we don't have the money or children to help us live comfortably and safely, a communal arrangement would be perfect. Everyone looking out for each other. I hope there are those among us who have the knowledge to get something like this started.

Sounds great - however, PLEASE look into zoning laws for any county you wish to reside in. Familiarize yourself with the County Property Appraisers Office (online, preferably) Learn how to get info on a parcel using address, or better yet, the actual Parcel ID #. See if it's zoned SINGLE FAMILY, or multi-family, or if RVs are allowed to be lived in, or if "anything with wheels", i.e. tiny homes on wheels, schoolies, etc. are allowed to be lived in. Beware of parcel with references to Conservation easements, or anything with "subject to Ordinance". Some are ok, if you aren't planning to use it full time, or if it's part of an unrestricted parcel. Learn how to navigate their GIS site. By doing so, you can view layers of the parcel to see if it is in a flood zone. Some homes right next to it may not flood, but your parcel can be the only one that does - so don't be deceived. Use Google Earth - however, some area pics are about 3 years old. I'm not a realtor, however, having been through it, I can share my experiences on how I now own 2 acres of undeveloped land. Love it. You are more than welcome to ask me for help

Landlords can ask any amount for a security. When my husband was dying of Alzheimer's I had to relocate. A landlord told me unless we had $60,000 coming in a year don't even apply. Most seniors don't have that kind of money coming in now and women especially. Unfortunately a lot of adult children are very spoiled and very hard to get along with and that's not an option for a lot of senior women either. We ain't living in the Walton era anymore. Where families took care of families.

There are laws about how much can be charged for a security deposit. For non-seniors the maximum is 2 months. For seniors the maximum amount that can legally charged for a security deposit is 1 months rent. I realize a lot of landlords are unprofessional, and don’t know the law, or don’t care. Know your rights. You don’t want to involve yourself with somebody who tries to get you to put down 60 K. There are some good, professional landlords out there. Best to you 🍀

I'm 66 now, and got divorced 10 years ago. At that time I struggled and cut back on all my expenses so I could keep the house on 1 income. I was worried about the rising cost of apartments and thought a home would be more secure financially. It has proven to be a smart choice, because tiny apartments are now more expensive than my mortgage. However, all my appliances are dying off, one at a time, so I'm struggling again to replace them. I want to downsize into a tiny home, if I can get the current house updated enough to sell it. If I can do it, the tiny home will be my final home, and I won't have to struggle financially anymore.

Smart choice indeed. Right now people that don't own a home and have to rent are the ones taken advantage of the most by investors and corporations taking advantage of long-term loans during the money printing spree by the Federal Reserve between 2020 and 2021. Your other choice may be to rent out some spare rooms. But you should definitely screen tenants carefully.

@sandyallen1523 8 месяцев назад
You can spend the money to update and you'd be lucky to get all that money back. Most of the time you won't. Just make it look the best you can and put it on the market. Use what you get for it to buy a tiny home with brand new appliances. It's still a seller's market out there. Best of luck to you. 💕

You have clear Title to your bus, therefore you fully own it. A person who buys Real Estate only has a Deed to the property, which is actually not ownership it is only occupancy rights based on certain governmental requirements (such as paying the property taxes). A Titled owner has ownership, a Deeded occupant only has certain rights and responsibilities based on government regulations. It would seem to me it's better to own than to occupy.

Have been living in my 2002 Mazda Protégé with my canine service companion since June 5, 2015... was not planned... life happens and we survive as best we can. Regarding an exit plan, I told my daughter that I never want to be a burden for her to carry. So, when the time comes, I intend to drive up into the mountains and go to sleep in the snow. Assuming I live as long as my parents, I should have another 30 years... I'd like to fill the time with joy filled moments, engaging in activities that I crave... artistic persuits, woodworking, gardening, photography, writing, travel, etc. Unfortunately, SSDI comes up short every month, just covering necessities and essentials... nothing for extras. I'm 60 yo. I currently have a decent job, but because of the enormous rise in the price of EVERYTHING, I've come to the conclusion that this is also going to be my future. I just bought an old but good SUV for cash, and am bringing it back up to solid. This is probably going to be my future home, because if prices keep going up, I will not be able to afford my rent in two years. This is not how I planned for my life to turn out, but here I am. 😢

Good for you to HAVE a plan. Now GET SMART as you can about finances. What will your social security after any taxes be? Do you have any other sources of income? Could you join up with one or two or three other women in the same situation and get a place to park your autos - safety will be a HUGE concern? How will you pay for insurance for our SUV? What can you minimize if you have to live in your car? How will you do ANY banking? How will people communicate with you? How will you bath? Identify all the Churches that offer food throughout the week or a food bank? What about the winter--do you have a plan for that? How will you maintain your SUV in working order. You still have time. Cut back as much as possible because PROJECT 2025 is also planning to raise the age to receive social security AND medicare so you might need to have a full-time job for a few years longer. Is there some training you could get to have part-time work and have a bit of cash. Think about SAFETY issues of living in a SUV/VAN. Just sayin' that a PLAN is a good thing but knowing how to handle money is a SMARTER thing and ensuring you - as a woman - are safe is even better.

Carol I'm delighted you're pursuing this issue. I'm 74 and had the good fortune to retire to a wilderness piece of property back in1997. 1-1/2 acres of wooded land in N. Arizona off grid for $4800. $100 down and $75. a month for 8 years, tough to find these days. I cobbled together a small cabin which I was able to get county approved, also difficult to do these days. Many nomads talk about joining together and buying land and developing it, much like our communes in the 60's. I have had quite a few comments on my channel (No spam intended) where these developments were shut down do to county regulations, even up in Canada. I'm looking forward to more of your videos, perhaps you'll discover some viable solutions for our social tragedy regarding seniors having nowhere to go but their vehicles. The old safety net of a mobile home park is long gone with average space rents from $600 to $1,000. per month plus utilities. TC and continue the good work, many thanks.

Having an exit plan is a must. I purchased my 2020 chrysler pacifica in Dec. 2023 and planning on becoming a part time van lifer. I take care of my 97 year old Mother and we live in a 5 bedroom house with my daughter. I sold my house a few years ago and retired,then moved in with my retired (military) daughter. I knew I needed a stable place to bath, received mail etc. I use my van currently to go and spend a few hours for myself.I'm riding the journey with my mother and sometime it gets hard(she is seasonable stubborn,bless her soul). So my daughter offer me a permanent resident as she is aware if I'm blessed to have 20 more good years...I shall take small trips to the lake or camp grounds near other campers. This is my bucket list by choice.I think if you have family,obtain a little space in there home if possible.We are the back bone of society and it is sad to see how we have become less important in todays world. I went back and watched a few videos, and you are doing a service for the older nomads. God bless you for that. I am learning a lot from your channel. I live in a home that I own and have no plans to live in a vehicle but I think about seniors living in their vehicles and what wonder will they would do when they are too old or not healthy enough to be a nomad. I am glad you frequently bring this subject up Carol because no other you tube van life channel ever talks about this except maybe Bob Wells. I don't know why I worry about these seniors because it doesn't effect me but I just do. If I was a senior and could not afford a home or an apartment and had to live in a vehicle, I would do whatever I could to save up to buy land with zoning that allows vehicles or tiny homes or manufactured homes on it. That way, I would have a home base and if I ever couldn't be a nomad anymore, if I couldn't afford anything else, I would just park my vehicle there and live there. If the zoning allowed, I would even allow other nomads to live there and charge them low rent. That way its a win win for the owner and the renter. I wish more nomads would be proactive and have an exit plan.

Luckily friends allow me to plug into power n get a shower during the winter months. I still work part time so that helps. .

I’m so glad you brought this topic to light. Many seniors are/were caregivers to their parents which does affect their finances and options. I was caregiver to my mom for 18 years in which I could only manage a part time job to adequately care for her. As the time was coming for her to pass, I knew I would be homeless as she was dividing the house among my siblings and me once it sold. At the time my son was 9 years old so he was present too. I did find a very small home several states away on several acres and as it was very cheap, I could get a mortgage. It was not my preference to relocate my life but I couldn’t afford the high housing market/property taxes. So I took a leap of faith. And it has turned out pretty well. I have attained a job, we have developed friends/community. The cost of being a caregiver can be very high as I have discovered. And siblings may not help so it really does affect finances. As I now am a senior I will be relying on social security which will be very modes but with a small home my expenses are very small.

I am also 62 and feel very blessed. My husband's job allowed me to be a stay at home mom to my 5 kids. We didn't live beyond our income and saved as well for old age. He has a nice pension we live on comfortably now, but if something happens to him, that pension, for me, is cut in half. If I kick off first though, he continues to receive the full pension! I think that is so 'not right'! But, our savings are there if I need them. We spend most of our year either traveling in our trailer or at our Yukon cabin. I do a lot of solo car camping and really enjoy the freedom of living out of m car! While living fulltime out of a vehicle is something that I aspire to, it's not what hubby wants, so I make do with short expeditions solo. I feel terrible for older people who are forced into living in a vehicle though. If it's not something you've ever considered, and see as an adventure, it could feel like you've hit rock bottom.

Hi, Carol first of all, I just wrote you a long comment regarding this so important video. And of course it erased, it right when I was gonna hit send. So I'm gonna make it shorter. But I want to start by saying you have found your niche woman. And you are blessing so many people. And there's nothing like your channel on all of RU-vid. So what I want to share is I did have an exit plan. And I wanna share it with others. Because to me It's a miracle from God. I was on the road for many, many years as a nomad. And then I became seriously ill to the point where now I am basically bed-bound and disabled and in very serious pain. So my partner here is my service dog Finn, So here is what I did. I came to the worst pace. Because I came to Southern California, Where I'm from. And Carol, I think you will know Redondo beach, Torrance, Hermosa Beach. So in these 3 cities.. Torrance and Redondo Beach have 24/7 365 signs all over that say, no large vehicle parking, which means anything over 20 feet. And 8 ft high. They did that so that no motor homes would come here. And I know that because I went to city hall and I asked. They felt too much trash etc. The first few months were horrible because I didn't know where to park without every other night at or morning 3 AM 2 AM. The police Are knocking on your door, or I should say bashing your door, and that's one thing a nomad hates, is people bashing on the front door. so I got to thinking. What am I gonna do? And here's the EXIT PLAN. I went to a mechanic I once used. And I asked him Would you let me park my RV in one of your empty spaces at the end of the lot? And he said yeah, why not? I'm not here. And here's the big reason that you don't need to be afraid. They want you there because you are security for them. And what I did is I had my mechanic. Write out on his letter head. Something that said the following, Kavita is his tenant and is used for security purposes due to theft in the area. I have electricity, I have water. And believe it or not, there's a little thing with metal top, And it says sewer, and that's the dump station. So if you are a little bit courageous, go up to any place that you think would like you there, and it wasn't only him that said Yeah you could stay here. It was other places too. But anyways he did write up something You know, and he also directed a part of this contract letter that said law Enforcement Please do not hassle my tenant as she is my security. Anywayes, Places always are open most of them Not all of them to having a nice clean person who doesn't trash up the place there, For security. And I know in so many towns They don't want motor homes there. I don't know why I mean I could guess why but when I first got here, I was on the street and there were 19 other RVs And they were all using drugs except me and I mean that because I knew them all. I got to meet every person for how long I was there and I hated being on a street. I don't like any tension that someone will call the police which they will do, and tell the police dispatcher a lie. They come right out. So, if the owner of the property wants you there, it's totally different. They don't bother you ever. They can't so I hope that helps. It's not the end of the road. When you're completely disabled like I am. I have a mobility scooter and it's in a shed right behind the motor room. And that's how I get around. If I need to use my RV I don't go far but sometimes I have to use it. IMPORTANT FOR MAINTAININGYOUR ENGINE. YOU DONT EVEN HAVE TO DRIVE. JUST LET IT IDLE FOR 1 half hour a week. I have a caretaker. Who comes for you know a part of the week a few days but she doesn't drive. Carol, you are on such an amazing helpful Mission. You don't have to go around the world to help people. You're doing it right where you are. God bless you I always watch what what you put out Because I realize I'm not alone and I don't wanna lose my RV ever. I want to be here always in my RV with my service dog. Because I would never want to live in an Apartment or assisted living or anything like that. Thank you so much. And love to all my Senior Sisters. ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Once you tell me the cross streats where are you now?
@MaxMiniTV
@MaxMiniTV 8 месяцев назад
@@kavitadeva It's actually where the Redondo Beach dog park is! I saw you've got a spot, I was mentioning Dominguez more for anyone who happens to read the comment who is looking for a spot in the area. The park is on Flagler at Beryl Street. About half the acreage of the park is the enclosed dog park, but dogs are not allowed in the main park, which is comprised mainly of a couple of little league diamonds and some batting cages. The parking lot closer to Beryl, away from the dog park, is the one that allows overnighting. The requirement is that everyone had to leave for two hours on Wednesday mornings for park maintenance. I think that serves another purpose, as well, because it means to park there you must have a running rig, and that keeps the lot from filling up with broken vehicles. I'll be in that area in a few months; maybe our paths will cross! I am actually setting up my domicile address there.

I am 71 living in my motorhome. In Q now but will be leaving next week for where summer will be cooler. Exit plan: none at the moment but I am always keeping an eye out. If I could find a place to park with low rent or property with low payment that would be nice. I have about 3 years before I need to replace the MH tires - that's when they start aging out. New owners greedy and junk fees on ridiculous things . Then they invented new regulations on parking, yard requirements, porch presence, can't hang out clothes, cars getting towed when not inspected bc trying to save the money to fix it. Processing fee, garbage pick up fee now went up again 15.00 a month. It crazy paying almost $700 for a small lot. I own the house. Bought it few yrs ago when lot rent was much lower. I'm sure my lot rent will go up $55 again this summer when my 1 year lease comes up they have been so many rules and regulations like it's a HOA place but it's not. I agree with her idea of living in community - independent yet friends nearby and a mild climate - and consider all the peoples pets too. That someone can help with them.

When the poop hits the fan and I have to move out of where I live and my client passes away, I have to go live in my van - one of the first things I’m going to do when I do that is I am going to join all the housing lists for low income seniors that I can find in & about my area and South.

Well, my exit plan, if you will, is to look for a small town with older infrastructure and a dwindling population with a median income that is similar to mine. Many of these are not on the main interstate but not that far away from cities on the main interstate. They are on arterial FM roads slightly off the beaten path. But much cheaper to live and you might even be able to afford to buy a small house. If there are a couple of fellow nomads, you might be able to put together a Golden Girls roommate situation. They glamorized it on the television show, but there were pretty practical reasons behind it. All of them were probably on SS and had to work part time to subsidize their incomes, but they also had company and someone to check in with/on them.

The exit plan is what is keeping me from hitting the road. My homeowner's insurance is now almost $10,000 per year and I still have a mortgage. Not sure what they will jack it up to next year. I would like to sell my home and buy some land where I could put a tiny home or just camp in my van. The problem is the cost of land in CA is extremely high. I live in Sonoma County which is a bit of a climate/social/culinary & wine mecca. Having lived here for over 40 years now, I have yet to find another place that I would like to live. I don't have any children to stay with or pass the house on to, but if I sell, I have to purchase something else again with in 6 months-- due to capital gains taxes. My house is in the woods -- if it was on the river front, it would be worth a lot more. I would like to be able to stop working so much just to support my house. I will be 75 this year!

That’s my problem: I lived in my dream place for the first 12 years, then it became overcrowded & noisy (like everywhere else), & whenever I go to look at places, I decide that I’m just as well off staying put.
