Why Are the Inquisitors so WEAK but AMAZING at Hunting Jedi

One thing most people miss is that prior to the outbreak of the clone wars; the bulk of the Jedi Order didn't emphasize combat proficiency as much as they would during the war. In some ways Sidious also inadvertently made the Jedi stronger. I also have to critique the style of combat of the Inquisitors; offense is good at wearing down the enemy and preventing them from bringing their full power to bear in a fight, but a pure focus on attacking also leads many of them to overextend themselves. Vader should have corrected this error, his own reliance on pressing the offense to overwhelm Obi-Wan on Mustafar is what ultimately got him maimed. Dare I say, the Inquisitors lightsaber style actually mirrors Anakin's own before being confined to his armor.

Vader and the Emperor do not want to give strong force wielders more power. They are terrified of competition so even if a Jedi was dead set on becoming an inquisitor, if they were too powerful in the force they would be exterminated. The Empire’s power cannot be questioned or even approached. Weak force users with hate and fear in their hearts are the perfect servants.

They're kind of like force sensitive FBI detectives. They are good at hunting down and locating people, investigating leads and interrogating people, but they aren't masters of martial arts. A typical FBI agent is probably more than the average person could handle, because they have some hand-to-hand combat training and more importantly a firearm. Similarly, the inquisitors are skilled at tracking people down, but they only have serviceable skill in the force and with a lightsaber. Their spinning lightsaber is their firearm, a surprise trump card to catch opponents off guard. Like an FBI agent, alone they are not the most combat effective, but their training allows them to work as a unit with deadly effectiveness. We see this in Rebels when three inquisitors are able to go toe-to-toe with Maul, Ahsoka, and Kannan for a while. Maul and Ahsoka are way out of their league. Perhaps the dark side nexus on Malachor gave them an advantage, but Maul would also be empowered. I think because they are so coordinated, they are able to stand up to their opponents who are burdened by their lack of trust in Maul. Their defeat comes when they split up to hunt their targets. Do I think they Inquisitors could have won that group fight? No. Maul was able to handle all three by himself pretty well, but the fact that they were able to last so long against some of the greatest force users and lightsaber duelists of the era speaks to the force multiplier their pack tactics is, even when the numbers are even. The Inquisitors are trained to unbalance their opponent, to catch them off guard, and to create conflict in their mind to disrupt their connection to the force. We see this when Kannan fights the Grand Inquisitor, yes he is out skilled by the Grand Inquisitor, but he is so afraid of losing his friends and burdened by guilt from order 66 that the Grand Inquisitor plays on that he cannot properly connect to the light side. It's similar to when Maul and Savage dueled Kenobi and Ventress. Maul and Kenobi were fairly even until Maul taunted Obi-wan about Qui Gon's death, then Obi-wan became unbalanced with rage and was weakened to the point Maul could take him down easily. I think the inquisitors are good at what they do, but what they do is unbalance their opponents and overwhelm them. When their primary tactic is useless like it became against Kannan in his final fight with the Grand Inquisitor, they are only unbalanced former Jedi with a basic grasp on the dark side. In a way this is brilliant because these tactics would never work on Vader or Sidious, thus if the Inquisitors ever rebelled the greatest weapon in their arsenal would be useless. I think to the average Jedi Knight who survived Order 66, these black armored hunters who betrayed the order coming in packs to taunt you and jump out of the shadows to kill you would be terrifying. Then they threaten the innocents around you, your friends, they taunt you for all the people you've lost, they criticize the order you cling to. It would be hard not to be afraid, to be angry, to question if their is any hope of resisting the Empire. The light would become distant and hard to connect to, then the red blades start spinning and the Jedi gets flashbacks to watching footage of General Grievous massacre Jedi in the Clone Wars. At that point, serviceable skill in the dark side and with the lightsaber is all the inquisitors need to finish the job.

It's one of those things that, I feel, if they had the time to train themselves, a few inquisitors may have grown in power. I'm sure that's why their missions kept them as busy as possible. Because fear is just a spark of that darkside potential. Anger brings forth an all-consuming flame. Finally, hatred hones that flame into a point of power that can't propel as well as cut apart anything, usually including those that attempt to wield it

It’s not only that, but most of the Jedi and Sith we have seen are exceptional. In contrast, the majority of them are weak. And the Jedi instilled restraint. This was part of the reason why Jedi like Exar Kun and Anakin believed that the Order was holding back, and withholding knowledge from them, and in part why Obi-Wan was able to hold his own against the latter.

Agree with most of your points, I would also include that many Jedi survivors, like Kanan, were padawans by the time of Order 66, who had not yet passed the Jedi Trial of Courage. We the results when Kanan finally overcame his fear and was then able to best the Grand Inquisitor, yet was no match for his Jedi counterpart

This is the best explanation yet. I always wondered why they disappear in the era of the Rebellion. It makes sense that while helpful in the early years, were ultimately useless.

The rule of two is really dumb for ruling a galaxy from a practical view point, yes Vader is powerful, they can send him if the iquisitor fails but he can't be in every place at the same time, the galaxy has like over a million planets and Vader may be needed somewhere else, realistically all the jedi has too do is keep moving from planet to planet and not use the force in front of anyone and most of them should escape from Vader and a handful of Inquisitors just by luck.

Some of the Jedi, such as Yoda and Obi-Wan were too powerful , and too risky to hunt down. If they were causing no trouble, they weren't actively hunted.

I always wondered, how powerful can a force user get? Because you have Jedi and Sith being able to screw with Black Holes, planets and I think the entire Galaxy in Legends while in canon you have the Dark Dimension Vader stuff. Is there any limit on what force users can possibly do?

I just love the inquisitors, they look cool and have story's as to why became what they are.

I think that the main difference between a truly powerful sith lord and an inquisitor, dark jedi or lower level sith acolyte is fear, but in a different way. Sith mostly leave behind their fear, they channel dark emotions, but they don't have doubts about their powers or choices. Trilla hated Cere, but she was afraid of many things, like the day they met again- and she could let her hatred go before her death. Lyn had doubts about what she was doing, and the moment she hit Barris, her anger evaporated. They used numbers to replace their names, but they were not transformed into different persons, they were transformed into a mutilated version of a jedi knight they used to be. Vader had absolutely zero doubts about hating everything, including himself, and there were not many things he was really afraid of (he did not have anything else to lose). A sith is not the person they used to be, they are truly something else. Even Dooku, who literally kept using his name for everything, is a different person.

You should make a video on the comparison on the Inquisitors of the Galactic Empire and the Lessor Sith of the Old Republic Sith Empire, both there strengths/ weaknesses and which was more effective or worse.

As Jedi, they weren't especially "weak". As dark siders though, they were fairly weak and poorly trained so they they didn't become a threat to either Palpatine or Vader.

The first wave of jedi eliminations were executed by clones troopers. Inquisitors arent 1v1 against jedi and more they are hunting arent master jedi. Then they are backed up by Vader. Like using a dog to find the prey. Sometimes the dog will mess up a rabbit and the rest if the time the real hunter gets the prey.

They were only taught the bare minimum for using the Dark Side of the Force. Fear only works on so many people, eventually there will be someone who realizes they are all bark and no bite which will lead to people fighting back. Unfortunately Fear tactics are a bit of a 2 way street, it won’t work on people who are either more effective at using those tactics or are aware that you aren’t as powerful as you present yourself to be. Ahsoka already experienced the fear of being falsely accused of a crime and being hunted down because of the accusations. It’s a “Been there and done that before” mentality for her.

Theory: If Palpatine knew he would be going thru apprentice, could Maul have been a protype design for the Inquisitors? He played a similar role before being beaten by Quigon, the fact he survived and became a threat to his plans, could've led to the idea to not fully train the Inquisitors...🤷 and of course by not making them SIth it essentially was a loophole to the Rule of 2 And could be why Maul was referred to as the Shadow, he was essentially a better trained version of them and could always stay ahead of them.

I think it's due to 2 reasons: 1. The Sith rule of two makes it so that there's no incentive to make them stronger than the two that were in place: Sidious and Vader, already 2 of the strongest sith ever. The were meant to get subpar training. 2. Inquisitors were trained to capture the Jedi of the fallen republic, but Jedi during the reign of the empire had evolved. They were much more wily and clever, not the type to play it by the old ways. They did what they needed to survive, and connected to the force in ways the Jedi of the republic never had. Yoda noted this during his battle with Sidious: the Jedi hadn't evolved in thousands of years, the Sith had. When the republic fell, it was the Jedi's turn to evolve.

Jerec would overpower all of them with a thought. To be honest, he wouldn't even need to fight, Jerec would probably let Boc Aseca have fun with them.

It was an absolute waste. The more Sith they could have had, the more they could have been spread throughout the galaxy to ensure their reign never ended, but short-sighted are the Sith.

I consider them the weakest among the five lightsaber force user groups; 1. Jedi 2. Sith, 3. Dark Acolytes (if we view them separate from the Sith) 4. Inquisitors and 5. Imperial Knights

I mean it’s kind the design they are meant to be effective at hunting padawan and some knights but if they come across anyone who actually knows how to properly fight they get destroyed But palpatine doesn’t want to train up potential threats so they’re training is kept to a minimum skill wise Cals a good example as soon as he is no longer scared he destroyed the inquisitors

The part that falls flat for me for the Inquisitors is Kanan and Ezra, who are a former Padawan and a kid from a dusty planet. The fact they can hold their own against two Inquisitors just feels wrong. They are strong when they need to be, weak when they are not. They never feel consistently strong

The Inquisitors were basically blood hounds sent to flush out Jedi and soften them up for Vader to come in with the kill.

Anakin/Vader, and the clones killed all the strong jedi. The inquisitors are hunting "jedi" with padawan level of training.

Part of the reason is so the inquisitors don't become a threat to the empire, most of the strongest jedi were killed during order 66 so many of the jedi who did escape were padawans who hadn't completed their training,the inquisitors can handle that but they don't have much change against someone like Ashoka or Obi Wan

Rebels showed that perfectly, they barely defeat the Grand Inquisitor, then Vader shows up and the gap is apparent immediately

The inquisitors were flawed from the start, both in the concept and the execution (no pun intended). The fact they were former Jedi made them fundamentally flawed and ultimately a failed product at the end of the day. When Cal Kestis faced the Ninth Sister on Kashyyyk, her words to him disturbed me, revealing her experiences from how she was turned from Jedi to Inquisitor: She was isolated, tortured, and mutilated, turning her from a keeper of the peace into a broken and hateful creature driven by her fear, anger, and pain to make others, especially the Jedi, suffer. In other words, the Inquisitors were unbalanced. They were taught fear, by Sidious, by Vader, and by the other members of the Inquisitorius, and so used fear, their own and those around them, to fuel their power in the Dark Side, but it was rudimentary and inferior compared to the likes of Asajj Ventress when she was (unofficially) Dooku's Sith apprentice. While it's understandable that Sidious and Vader would not want the inquisitors to grow too powerful, their methods were honestly sloppy, and so the inquisitors were sloppy, unable to fully and truly grasp the full powers of the Dark Side by learning Anger and Hate along with Fear. Thus, the Inquisitors made up for their shortcomings with other methods, such as utilizing resources, soldiers, equipment, and dirty strategies and tactics that enabled them to track down and flush Jedi survivors out of hiding for them to kill. As the GI said, the Jedi hunt themselves by their inability to stand by and do nothing when people are suffering, and these good deeds do not go unpunished by the Inquisitors, the Empire, bounty hunters, or Vader himself. It was utilizing these methods that enabled the Inquisitors to effectively hunt Jedi, but let us not forget their jedi prey were often padawans, inexperienced knights, or even jedi elders, all of whom were not in the same league as the likes of Obi-wan, Yoda, Quinlan Voss, etc., and many survivign jedi were traumatized by all that had hunted, the downfall of their order, the galaxy turning on them, losing everything and everyone that had mattered to them, and living the rest of their lives in hiding or on the run, always afraid, never at peace Not to mention the Inquisitors themselves were victims (not all of them, but still) who had been stripped of who and what they were originally were and reforged into bitter killers, afraid of their master for the one thing they had left, their lives. Sidious took a perverse pleasure in breaking jedi and turning them into these fallen wielders of the dark side, but his disappointment in them is hypocritical in that they turned out to be exactly what he had Vader train them to be. Had Sidious started from scratch instead of with these wayward jedi, he could surely have produced far more powerful and competent agents skilled in the Dark Side. His plan before, to turn force-sensitive children, would have yielded better results. He did basically the same thing when he abducted Maul and made him his initial apprentice. Maul would likely have been a perfect inquisitor thanks to his training, but even he was a pawn that was discarded after his downfall on Naboo

They could track jedi down no problem but fighting other force users no way even some of them were former jedi. Still they didn't really fight that good against force users. They were amazing at tracking and fleeing like scouts in a wolf pack in order to bring the rest hither. Then in numbers they are deadly for sure.

Definitely hurt them, I mean even Agent Kallous from Rebels, a non force sensitive could probably fight some Jedi with his Bow-rifle. Palpatine should have trained the Inquisitors better

Yeah Palpatine wouldn't threaten his rule by having a bunch of super powerfull dark side users running around, that just asking for them to gang up on him it's smarter to have a bunch of weaker force users in that roll so he doesn't have a coup

The inquisitors are kind of like hunting dogs in that way.

Because basically they are kept weak as dark side adepts in both power and ability so that that they wound never be strong enough to overthrow the Sith. Yet in pack Hunter groups and bully style tactics would be enough of a match to kill Jedi.

Don't forget that the most powerful of Jedi has basically been extinguished. and most Jedi still alive were basically weaklings themselves except a few exceptions, which Vader dealt with Personally.

Dunno if they was particularly good at Jedi beating either.. seeing as they in most cases NEVER got far enough to figure out enough of the Darkside to truly become good at it an thus sorta become new age Sith... where it mattered the most.. Kal, Asoka, Ezra... an if they'd crossed paths with alot of the super powerful Force user counter parts ESPECIALLY in EU a Cannon like Starkiller or Luke Skywalker.. they become near useless an get their ass kicked. An against someone that DOESNT play, like finding themselves having to fight Starkiller, Luke or Yoda or maybe Kenobi back in his active days on Tatoonine... they'd probably not live long enough to have to worry about explaining themselves to Vader and/or Sideous.. if Palpatine wanted them to have a better showing he shoulda had WAY more of them trained and/or had them trained hella better... he got lazy on this one

Dark Jedi and Dark Side adepts tend to be weaker than real proper Sith Lords for the most part in general.

So basically inquisitors are useless against any lightsider or darksider who knows what they're doing

I do not think the inquisitors are weak. I just believe the opponents we saw inquisitors fighting against were master chemist. And that why they seemed weak.

They didn't fight like Jedi that's why they were able to defeat Jedi. Think of it like somebody with little dark side training running up and kicking a Jedi in the nuts.

Cuz they played plenty of Barbarian in Diablo. Spin 2 win. Jedi might identify as many, woman orr something in-between. But inquisitor's identify as attack helicopters, the flesh is weak they crave the strength and certainly of steel.

inquisitors are hunting dogs. they sniff out and chase preys. obviously they are expected and strongly encourage to kill but at the end of the day the hunter (Vader) is the real killer.

In the new show it shows how weak minded and sloppy they are when it comes to attacking

"Amazing at hunting Jedi" pfffft. Absolutely not. It took THREE of them to find and kill a random young Jedi in Kenobi on Tatooine, and they couldn't accomplish the simple task of locking down every avenue of escape for Obi-Wan when he was running loose IN THEIR OWN BASE. Ahsoka while barely trying solo'd 2 at once, killed at least 2 in 2 separate occasions (one in tales of the jedi, one in her own series, 3 died because of Maul barely trying, and Bariss (spoilers) is highly likely to not even make it past the first couple years of Imperial reign before dying pathetically. Literally, the only Inquisitor who actually did their job was Trilla in fallen order, with her only mistake not taking the holocron with the list of force sensitive children on it straight to Coruscant once she had it.

I was never keen on the concept of the inquisitors… consider that most of my head canon consisted of legends lore. Lightsabers after the destruction of the Jedi were intended to be scarce.. not doubling as a helicopter 🙄
