Great video, Joe. I used to live in Michigan (originally from Ohio). Just one pronunciation mistake, which you've probably heard by now. Toward the end of the video you refer to "Gratiot" as grat-i-ot. People in Michigan call it "grash-it."
I've noticed how so many (moderately) affluent suburbs of Detroit - including some now within the City of Detroit - have "Woods" as the second name. Palmer Woods, Huntington Woods, Grosse Pointe Woods...the list can go on.
I don't believe they have any connections other than the name. Since both places (gp and grosse ile) were settled by the french, that probably explains the similar names. Grosse means 'big' so 'big island' and 'big point' I guess.
Great video, I moved to the Grosse Pointe Area a while back. I never really paid much attention to the geography of the area but I always wanted too know. Thanks!

As a former 16 year old from Grosse Pointe Shores, did it not say the median income was $177,000 in your info graphic? This means not everyone is a millionaire in the GPS. Furthermore, the separation from sh1t hole Wayne County would also mean waaay lower car insurance rates too. Wayne County via Detroit has more car theft even though GPS has virtually none. A move to Macomb would have a lot of benefits for people that manage their money properly and don't crime it up like the average Detroiter.
Dad moved us there in '64 2 yrs after i was Born. We lived on Keystone off 7 Mile. Then ti 497 Rivard Blvrd. In Grosse Pointe . Then in '77 Dad moved us to L.A. Cali
@@diquebagge1112 why the word "too"? Those are not my beliefs. Like most, I enjoy folks who are not involved in crime. Those folks come in all skin colors.
Thank you for watching! I pretty much just googled 'why are there 5 grosse pointes' and used the information I found there, but when I realized it wasn't quite sufficient for the video I searched each of the 5 suburbs individual history. I dont quite remember which links I used but if you want me to try and find them again I can!
FYI - no one calls it "Grosse Pointe" - we just say Grosse Pointe City or City. Also for pronunciation Bewick is not Beh-wick. It's "Bee-wick". Other than that - very informative video, thanks!
While growing up on the eastside of Detroit, I idolized Grosse Pointe all out of proportion. Now, living in Bloomfield Hills, it seems a dull flavorless hive of WASPs whose houses are jammed too close together other on tiny lots.
Bloomfield Hills has been losing its estates and a great deal of larger lots that are being subdivided…. The opposite is actually occurring in the Pointes right now. The people that really want the acreage are going to parts of Oakland Township Rochester Hills, Northville Orchard Lake even as far as Clarkston now whereas 3040 years ago or even more, they would’ve chosen Bloomfield Hills… Bloomfield Hills is now considered “new old money “ in Metro Detroit
NOT "just grosse pointe"... it's GROSSE POINTE CITY people there tend to get annoyed when in drop down menus/ postal whatever they leave off the city, or often consider it part of grosse pointe park Otherwise, very great video! Really informative
Funny enough, grosse pointe woods was actually the regions first city outside of detroit, being known as the village of Grosse Pointe until a woman in 39 convinced Lochmoor residents to change it to Grosse Pointe Woods
@@geography_joeI had just assumed you were native to Michigan so I commented but after I left that I scrolled through the comments and seemed like everyone had something to say about it.
