Professor Alice Roberts and Dr. Nisha McWeeney take us on an exploration of Britain's West, revealing remarkable archaeological discoveries. Highlights include, an Anglo-Saxon dig in the Cotswolds, where high-status artifacts like a silver-gilt sword pommel and a silver buckle are uncovered, shedding light on early 6th-century history. Plus at Barrow Clump, the team finds human remains, examining the impact of military activities and investigating the unusual coastal burials potentially linked to shipwreck victims.

To those concerned about the excavation of graves - be aware that actual grave robbers operate in the UK, in the form of 'nighthawkers' - unscrupulous people with metal detectors, usually operating at night. I suspect that first dig in the Cotswolds was for just that reason - I remember a similar dig in a later episode where predation by nighthawkers was cited as a reason for excavation. Once word got out - those graves would have been destroyed by criminals, with all knowledge of the past lost. Far better to learn about those who went before...

NOTE TO THE EDITOR: Please lower the volume level at your ad for History Hit because it makes me instantly stop the video to fast forward past it every time. I understand you do it to get the viewer's attention, but you're not thinking about viewers using headphones or people who are watching trying not to annoy or wake-up others around them with the noise from the video. I know I'm not the only person to comment about this so please consider it as I think more people would take more notice of the ad if it wasn't blasted at them in the middle of a calming history video. And for those who wish to complain about my complaint,....I'm allowed to have and voice my views, just like you. Have a great day.

A truly spellbinding documentary. I have such mixed feelings about the digging up of bodies. I understand the need to "know" but why can't they be left in situ and simply photographed after bone samples and some teeth are removed for testing? I'm fascinated by all the archaeological discoveries, but the 10 year old boy and his little teeth got me. My Grandson is 10 and that little boy became real to me. I wish he could have been left to rest in peace.

In England, Sir Walter Scott's romantic literature restored the dignity of the Saxons and, in a way, stimulated the development of both historiography and archeology. Echoes of this can be seen in Brazil. First in the romantic literature of José de Alencar, who later encouraged the study of indigenous societies and the archaeological sites they left in Brazilian territory. But no one produces TV programs like this in Brazil. Here the memory needs to be buried because there are still landowners who covet indigenous territories, invade it to cut wood, extract gold, etc... Businessmen like Elon Musk bought tons of gold criminally extracted from indigenous territories during the Bolsonaro government. Even today there is a well-structured political right that propagates hatred against Indians and encourages organized violence against them. These conflicts do not exist in England, but I suspect that the proliferation of programs like this serves another purpose: to divert the population's attention from the distributive conflicts caused by neoliberalism to concentrate income. The same problem (the institutionalized greed of the rich) produces the same results through different devices (erasure of memory in Brazil, overexploitation of the past in England).

Glass is actually one of the strongest materials around It is very hard and very stable, it has very high compressive strength but very low sheer strength. It is also extremely stable. It is already a rock. I think it is so rarely found intact has more to do with the fact people don't generally throw out intact glassware, but the often throw out broken glass.

The burial of the teenage/young man with the arms over his head wasn't put in there in some weird manor he was rolled in by someone who couldn't lift him or didn't care how he went in and kicked him in. The arms go like that when they are rolled in and the always land on their face like he was because of gravity, he was on his back next to the grave and then once they dug it they push or kicked him in and when you do that, they go face down 9/10 times.

These burials are really fascinating, BUT I can never completely feel comfortable about digging up someone’s grave and poking around their possessions. It’s a FREAKING gravesite, forCRYING OUT LOUD!That is sacred. I’d be out for blood if somebody dug up my husband‘s grave and started poking around his things. I mean this woman is looking at this glass bowl and they make the comment, “gosh, this could be even from the Roman times and an heirloom.” a private and treasured possession of this human being, carefully placed with him when he was laid to rest! Yet they’re totally OK with taking it. Kind of sickening when you think of it like that. So yeah I’m sorry I just can’t get past it. What’s really creepy is I recently saw a video of someone’s clothes taken off their corpse, put the corpse back in their burial spot but keep the clothes and put them on display at a museum. And I’m not talking about ancient ancient ancient grave, I’m talking about one that was in the 16th century AND they knew who it was, yet they still thought that it was perfectly OK to take their clothes and stick them in a museum. I’m sorry. That is a completely disgusting thing to do. I mean, how long does a person have to be dead before their burial items become “fair game“? So gross! It really cracked me up when the guy goes, “yeah we’re the only people that’s looked at this guy and his stuff since the day he was buried. I’m just can’t help but feel emotional!“ Yeah sure buddy. wasn’t emotional enough of an experience to stop you from grave robbing.

I really enjoy these Archeological digs, the people doing them are just in awe, but there seems to be a lot of preconceived ideas still from these people. Why would it be so unacceptable for a man who might have been an unparalleled warrior, wearing amethyst beads? There are LOTS of Cultures that were filled with ideas of men being just as blinged up as the women, especially a well to do Warrior who might have well become the ruler of their little tribe of village of whatever it would be, and a status of his position might have been wearing something that we, today consider more feminine, in our current culture. Comments like this make them look really unprofessional and kind of sexist if you really think about it, with the standard Female entitlement standing there speaking about Feminine things such as amethyst beads and other fineries then telling about the weapons and armor and other things that are more masculine. Gimme a break. What was considered masculine and feminine back then likely would have been vastly different than today, or in the woman's own mind! I as a man would have no problem wearing amethyst beads, if in a proper configuration with other items, that would have likely long rotted away since. so preconceived ideas are enemies to the professions of Archeology and Anthropology. Kind of irritating if I'm being honest and it doesn't give a good impression about this person's talents and knowledge. If you look into Japanese Culture, the very artistic nature of the Culture and the great devotion to the arts would mislead the uninitiated into what a man would wear and what a woman would wear. the type of Cloth worn in Japan's ancient History saw a great deal of floral motifs worn by both men and women. the higher up in Japanese Society a person was did not differentiate in what was on the cloths so much as the style of the clothing made from it. So, do we really have enough information about the old Saxon cuture that we can say a man would never wear Amethyst beads? I think not.

Well the history of early man came out of the east and also out of the west, so is this a cultural argument or a geo political argument both have merit and none of the political science people agree with the former either so.... I digress.men had legs, boats, and they also had more wander lust back then to explore, and as well as we know every culture did the same, hence the history of man kind.

I'm sorry... what? Who is getting rich? This is archaeology, science. Most of the people involved are volunteers and the paid professionals involved earned their positions and they do NOT get to take artifacts home with them. When someone dies the place their remains are buried does not belong to them in perpetuity... we'd run out of places to farm or build houses or do pretty much anything. Permits to dig are granted after very careful consideration. How does anything you say make any sense? WT actual F are you talking about?

I can’t help but feel like they are doing wrong pulling people out of the ground who have passed and been placed there by loved ones. Not saying I don’t enjoy these types of documentaries. Just on the fence about it.

I totally disagree with you. Learning who these people are... is bring them back to life in a way. We bring their history and culture into our future.

Yes agree. They were buried with the items for a reason. But these people are greedy for the items and the science.

The ocean is going to take the bodies once the cliffs erode anyhow so what's it matter? Shouldn't we at least learn something from them, pay attention when you watch and that would be obvious.

Well, I would have watched your video all the way through. You ruined it with your cheap, nasty and commercialistic trick. Maybe next time you wont hike the audio gain for your nasty little advert. So no, I shall not, on this occasion, be subscribing.

People are ignoring actual known human history. The actual historical records and DNA migrations show that everyone spread out from Mesopotamia. Ancient history is essential for everyone to know, especially the sixteen original civilizations… from the sixteen grandsons of Noah. Learn ancient history before trying to learn science. 1. The first inhabitants of Italy (K) Tubal 2. Thracians (L) Tiras 3. Mediterranean Greek sea people (T) Javan 4. Siberians (N) Meshek 5. East Asians (O) Magog 6. Medes (PQ) Madai 7. Western Europeans (R) Gomer 8. Hebrews and Arabic (IJ) Arphaxad 9. Elamites (H) Elam 10. Assyrians (G) Asshur 11. Arameans (F1) Aram 12. Lydians (F2) Lud 13. Cushites (AB, C) Cush 14. Egyptians (E3) Mitzrayim 15. Canaanites (E2, D) Canaan 16. Original North African Phoenicians (E1) Phut The D paternal haplogroup Sino descendants of Canaan migrated from Canaan east to China all the way to Japan and Tibet. The C paternal haplogroup descendants of Nimrod migrated as far as South Asia, the Pacific, Mongolia and all the way to the Americas accounting for the Olmec civilization as well as the Q haplogroup descendants of Madai ancestor of the Medes that crossed the Atlantic to Central America. The A maternal mtDNA haplogroup belonging to the Semitic N lineage accompanied the Eurasian Q paternal haplogroup to Central America. The C&D maternal haplogroups belonging to the Eurasian M lineage also accompanied the Atlantic crossing of the Q paternal haplogroup Medes and probably the C paternal haplogroup to Central America. The Semitic B maternal mtDNA haplogroup seems to have crossed the Pacific Ocean to South America. The Mediterranean paternal R1b and the maternal X2a also found in Galilee represent another Atlantic crossing of the Phoenicians in the days of King Solomon considering also the Mediterranean paternal haplogroups of T, G, I1, I2, J1, J2, E and B in addition to the R1b in Native American Populations. J1 and J2 is Arabs and Jews. (I1 is most likely Dan and I2 resembles the movements of the tribe of Asher) Of course there is also the Cohen modal haplotype of J1 P58 as well which identifies the IJ lineage of Hebrews and Arabs that are descended from Arphaxad. J2 M172 is the largest group of descendants probably of the House of the kings David and Solomon. Now you know a lot more of what is verified human history. Neanderthals were Eurasians descended from Japheth and Denisovans are a mix of Eurasians and Canaanites and or Cushites descended from Ham.

Disrespectful to the dead
@wandapease-gi8yo
@wandapease-gi8yo 8 дней назад
Digging up bodies to grind for fertilizer, tossing the opposite side’s bodies down wells, yanking out the teeth of any dead soldiers to make dentures leaving people to die alone, that kind of thing is disrespectful. These people’s bones are being carefully handled. No one is being disrespectful of them. The badgers aren’t evil either. “From dust we came to dust we will return.” I find Archeological work like this to be very respectful.
