The Extreme Archaeology team travel to Culzean Castle in Scotland. Built on a headland the castle stand over a series of caves whose occupation and use remains unclear. The team discovers human remains and the old legends of cannibals inhabiting the caves resurface. Undaunted the team continues their work eventually unraveling the story of the remains, and the source of much of the human activity evident in the caves

Ok. So the whole premise is how difficult the places are to get to, but, the police are on site at the cave within minutes of the call. Nice concept and we may have never known but they weren’t expecting to have to contact the police . Come on…..

I enjoyed the rope work and being a climber and repeller also a first responder SAR tech ,I could see the safety work involved class A definitely, nice to see professionalism. It makes the difference between a rescue and a body retrieval usually a retrieval because safety was ignored by climbers or canyon jumpers.

@18:00 its reminiscent of room and pillar mining a technology that would have been around in that time period for coal mines. Being an opal miner those pillars would support and spread the weight of the foundation layer or rock not necessarily the cubic weight of the castle above, hard to say without being there and knowing the geology. Just from the visuals and the construction of the pillars and how long they have been there they maybe are taking weight but more than likely supporting the rock layer above so either way they are serving a purpose. Nice old craftmanship in their construction indeed and the castles architect saw the need for them, old school indeed, hello from down under.

I am always so amazed at the amazing structures, eg the culvert here with such limited equipment. and thinking on that it reminded me of a small island with a number of villages completely washed away. a man from our technological world, loaded a plane/copter with supplies which were dropped on the island. when he himself landed on the island. he expected to hear of a lot of death and distress. Instead he found a lot of happy people. grateful for the fact that nobody died. They lived in simply built huts so there were no injuries from heavy or lethal objects, being washed or thrown around. I envied their simple life

the history of Scotland is fascinating, having researched it for a number of years - from wars between clans to the wars with England etc especially during the12th to 15th centuries - many castles oceanside had cave structures such as these to receive supplies for the castles by boats or in the case of the Highlanders aa section dug below the castle (called vaults as opposed to dungeons) to hold prisoners usually to face a slow death by starvation - there were tunnels from the castle to reach the storage areas to bring foods and other supplies up to the kitchens and other areas - a particular punishment was the use of caves near the ocean waves where prisoners were chained to the walls and as the tides came in would suffer a slow death by drowning - as the world and climate have changed over 100s of years these modern day findings and interpretations will only give us a very small view of history during those ions as we were not present during those times but attempts to understand the past are also always fascinating -

These caves are very very old and in past they sometimes buried people in such places. Caves used to be sacred places for burials. Then they have built on top of them and been used as possibly a smugglers cave and then even later in turn, a huge castle built on top of it. Those in power used to build churches and castles on top of such sacred places as they hold mystique and at times are power places, energy points. Interesting dig. x

Caves are time capsules similar to graves but sometimes better; not counting the ship at Sutton Hoo. In a few years with the help of Ai, we will be able to gain 3d maps in situ and at depth without the need to move anything. The data points and precision extrapolations would tell fascinating stories that are lost with the turning of the trowel.

Same format as the other episodes I've seen in the series. Waste Day 1 in some pointless exercise to get to the site, then mess around in the mud and finish with a half baked conclusion. Funny that the site was so inaccessible that the rope work from the castle above was required when the Police etc were able just to walk right in.

Sadly, carbon 14 isn’t a very accurate or robust dating method. Live animals have been dated at thousands of years old. The largest confounding factor is water. The more water, the carbon source has been in, the more inaccurate the dating will be.

I don't think remains were those of a cannibal feast or smugglers. I believe it was a family living in the cave living off of seafood. What are they going to smuggle fish? Maybe they scavenged shipwrecks. I believe she said of the remains...one was a teenager the other a child, doesn't sound like medieval smugglers.

The cup is gold rimmed. She puts it back. Archeology is all about finding treasure, but you have to know what treasure looks like. It looks like gold and silver. That's why they are so fixated on "high status". That's code for likely gold and silver. Some China pieces are literally worth their weight in gold. Treasure is treasure because it's a store of lasting value.

Most archeology is digging through trash and foundations. I looked at doing an archeological unit at uni because I was interested in ancient Egypt. Decided not to when I discovered we would spend the semester examining shell middens (piles of discarded shells that were basically the trash heaps of ancient Aboriginal settlements). It probably would have been quite interesting but eighteen year old me didn’t appreciate the learning opportunities provided by ancient garbage dumps.
