Im from the east coast part of the country and been to both LA and Oakland. It's funny how Oakland is like 6 hours driving distance from LA and they never fell under the gangs umbrella. Crips and blood gangs are in NY, NJ and various southern states but not 6 hours north in Oakland. Testament to how strong them brotha's are. 👊🏽

Detroit in Oakland we're the only two school districts in the US that had a black consciousness/power as part of its curriculum. Detroit didn't have bloods until fairly recent. We relate to Oakland a lot more than LA.

Im from DC and we don't have any blood or crips or any gang culture as it is in a lot of other areas. DC has it's own identity and culture from our music (GoGo) to our local clothing brands (Shooters, Alldaz, Maddness, and others). We always prided ourselves on being independent and original. We are only a 4 hour drive from NYC and I personally was shocked to see how the younger generation from NY adopted West Coast gang culture and identity.

Also, if you look at that 99 corridor highway...it runs from LA to like Sacramento. Both places and everywhere in between (Stockton, Fresno, ect) have gangs. Something to take note of.
I think prison politics played into it too. All them LA cats wanted to push back against BGF, once the crips was deep they was able to do that. But the Bay still fell up under that.

I always felt that the bay area was all about hustling and getting money, so if you went there on some gangbangin shit and you wasn't from there, they would look at you like you was stupid and not on their level, and it's just a feeling in the air as soon as you hit the bay area, that is way different from LA or any other city, it's electric and infectious and makes you wanna get that paper like everyone else there. I only heard of a small blood hood in Frisco and some dude from Richmond said they had some bloods out there back in the day. For the most part ain’t know bloods and crips in the Bay except for San Jose, I know a crip from out there. San Jose is there own thing out there even though they are the Bay Area. Fairfield and Vallejo doesn’t even have bloods and crips. The Bay doesn’t follow what others do, we had some strong figures that wouldn’t allow it, that color stuff didn’t fly in the Bay, we had our own structure of hustlers, players, Mack’s and revolutionaries. That color stuff didn’t make know sense. The Bay always had smart strong minded people shaping the culture. Ultimately it was the leaders of the underworld and the revolutionaries like the panthers that blocked it. The Bay Area was known for great colleges and had a lot of smart young people that weren’t easily persuaded. The Bay was already militant in its own way and lead its own.
A lot of the major cities didn’t have Super gangs until the 90’s. Baltimore, DC, Philly, Oakland, Detroit to name a few. Super gangs originally formed in LA and Chicago and spread to others cities that they could easily takeover and influence. It’s still surprising to see Crips and Bloods in New York and even GD’s.

Cities that will never have Bloods/Crips: Detroit, Oakland, Chicago, Washington D.C.. Detroit got hoods that been around for generations. D.C. got so many established hoods in NE, SE, NW, and SW DC, that Crips and Bloods won't bubble there. Oakland hoods seem to be about what side of Oakland people from. Chicago got they own gangs, their gangs been around so long that some of their gangs became L.A. gangs (Black P. Stones for example), so they got no room for Crips and Bloods.
A lot of people think we bloods in Oakland and the bay cus we say blood a lot but it has nothing to do with gangbangin. I can't speak with authority, because I am too young, as well as never being in the streets, but I think that BGF and prison politics also had something to do with it. That and that we were turf oriented. The Panthers were all but defunct by 75...so I don't think that they had much influence by the time the Cs and Bs started spreading out.

Oakland most def has crips they not black tho they Tongan and Vietnamese. It wasn’t the Black Panthers. Remember, Panthers existed between 1966 and 1982 (all the other “Panthers are knock off’s who don’t even understand nor respect the original BPP’s ideology and identity beyond wearing berets and leather coats, but I digress). An OG (in Santa Rita County Jail) told me that the Bloods and Crips was trying to come out here and set up shop but the OG’s who was getting their dope from down south wouldn’t let them bring gang banging to the Town. It was during the 80’s when Mickey Moore and the Family was beefing with Felix Mitchell and the Mob. They both had connects in LA and they both resisted bringing Crips/Bloods to Oakland. The Black Guerrilla Family (BGF or Jama) and 415 (aka Kumi) had a hand in it too. A lot of early Kumi cats did time in California Youth Authority with a lot of Crips and Bloods and did not like them (especially the Crips since they was so deep) so when they started going to prison, a BGF member created Kumi because all of the other members of Jama were in the hole and the Crips tried to smash on the Bay so Bay niggas came together and created the Wrecking Crew which eventually became 415 to protect the Bay who remained neither Blood nor Crip (although we started to align ourselves with the Bloods since we used, and still use, the Blood greeting and they could relate to us as anti-Crip). We could have become Bloods but we chose not to for whatever reason (my thinking is the Bay was on their own shit and already had our own culture as we still do). So gang banging (as we know it) never expanded to the Bay (as it could have during the 80’s and 90’s when they was expanding all over the country). It’s another thing to be proud of and as murderous as this city is, we don’t need no gang culture adding explosives to the fire! Shout out to all the Jama and Kumi bruthas who held the line for the Bay! 💪🏾✊🏾 Just another note, Jama was influenced by the Black Panther Party and was inspired (if not started, since he was gunned down in San Quentin the year the BGF started) by BPP member George Jackson.

Early on as Crips began flooding the CYA and the pen, they were not taking orders, and allowing themselves to be subjugated by the BGF. Because of that, the BGF wanted to smash but couldn’t because they didn’t have the numbers. A Crip got into it with the AB and they wanted to move on the Crips and according to Joe Rock Head, Jama threw them under the bus. I couldnt believe it but I do cause one; he did it on camera for all to see, and two; I’ve heard of the foul ways Jama would recruit people back in the day and matches with what Joe Rock was saying: slide paperwork under the cell door and now your a member, then send you on a crash dummy mission for them. So they wasn’t always down with the Blacks and they moved as a criminal organization, not for the community, so they were NOTHING like the Black Panthers…don’t mistake the two!

I’m from L.A., 135ives PIRU. I’ve notice when traveling through Oakland, Vallejo, Richmond and other parts back in the 90’s you never saw Bruh’s flagging the Red & Blue. However, you saw a lot of Players.
The Bay always fell up under Jamaa. Crips from LA especially have an adversarial relationship with them because of how they were treated when the first Crips started hitting the cdc in the early and mid 1970s. My older homies always told me Jamaa went from being revolutionaries to slangin and extortion around that time and that’s why most of didn’t willingly fall in line. Once Crips got deep Jamaa power and influence was gone on cats from So Cal. Damus might have maintained a relationship with them but they weren’t under their authority.

Respect to whatchu sayn cuhz, but I got put on in East Oakland (Seminary) by the Undercover Crips. We was heavily linked to Rollin 60s which were from Sacto. You got a point tho I agree there wasn’t AS MUCH bloods and crips as there is in Socal. But Piru was in Antioch and Pittsburg and when I went to school in Hogan High in Vallejo there was a heavy crop faction there.
Also, my cousin from Sacramento interviewed on of their older guys, and he pretty much said that when the LA guys hit, they had bread...that and organization. I think that's how it was in most places where gangs spread, whether Seattle, the Midwest, the south. It's like the Cube song Summer Vacation. And in the mid 80s, the Town was already super breaded out, and turns established. Again, this is just me talking out my ass, from what I've heard through the years. A lot of them Diamond Crips from LA moved around and started hoods outside LA. Fresno has a deep set of them. I believe Sac Garden Blocc was started by them, also NSGC in Stoccton

Growing up I watched whole neighborhood come out to fight a gang of crips & bloods. Plus + many people have Southern Family connection so Segregation was not big being Black Panthers Foundation community
LA had Panthers(Oakland started) Oakland has Crips((Los Angeles started). If Blaccs in Oakland don't (color)bang... that's cool. Most Crips try not to color bang(just get money). Crips is Blocc neighborhood turf reppin. Where people think sets come from

I'm not to sure, but when we had basketball games in San Leandro/Oakland a lot of them were from the blocks, & called you blood. Maybe it has something with Notherners, & thinking norcal is all red with more southerners in south part of the state.
We say Blood all the time in the old sense of the Black brothers from the ‘60s who called each other Blood in Vietnam. Blood brother was a common black slang term in the day had nothing to do with gangs.
