Good mangers are leader's. They make their staff feel valued and safe . They inspire people and are good communicators. Throughout my working life ( about 12 different positions ) I only worked for 2 mangers who fitted this criteria.

Few examples from the IT world - a boss once came to me and said "I want you to push your people so hard to get this done that they will come to me and complain about you being to pushy. And if you achieve this u get a bottle of champagne". - a boss that pushed me an the other teamleads on the project so hard that two could only sleep with sleeping pills, one started trying when I asked her how she coped, anotherone developed a rash and I plain an simple couldn't take it anymore after a while - went to a doctor that took me out of this hell - a boss that told me "no the restructuring will not have any negative impact on your salary growth" and exactly one year later told me "for the foreseeable future you will not have any salary growth beyond inflation if any" - a boss that set a really aggressie timeline for a project to take over some stuff that made me do quite some overtime etc and few months later tells me for strategic reasons we know give that stuff to yet another company. So basically with a lot of sweat we build a house and a few month later destroy it again.... - have some more real bad ones from my current employer but am not sure they may find out, so rather not mention those...

Ive come across bosses like that. The thinking is build them, then break them, and repeat. It leads to burnout, politics, manipulation and good ppl getting tired of it. Really poor management up above pressures line managers to make short term moves and then punish them when the inevitable backfires happen. A few great points you make though

Brilliant! This video was perfect for me. I've REALLY been through the mill this year. Having been diagnosed with cancer, thrown into lockdown, threatened with redundancy, lost a manager who had been through all the emotions of my cancer diagnosis with me due to voluntary redundancy, I can honestly say that said manager has shown every single aspect of what you have mentioned makes a bad manager. It has had a huge impact on my self worth and I now suffer with severe anxiety because of it. I am grateful that this manager has now gone as I would never have trusted them to work through a phased return to work plan with me. I am also thankful for my new manager as they are really pulling all the stops out to rectify this god awful situation. Thank you for your video. It has helped to settle self doubt over whether it was me or my old manager that was the problem.

Im glad that it helped and that things sound on the up for you. I was expecting more views on the video itself but to be honest certain videos I just feel that there is more personal value in them regardless of views and this is one of them. Most of all though if a video brings real value to one person then thats what really matters. Thank you for the feedback.

@@RevorecRecruitmentSolutions give it time! There are still many people on furlough. Most likely those people on furlough are the ones who are classed as vulnerable with regards to this coronavirus. Watch and wait to see how their return to work is handled. You may find people come across your video then. The one thing that scares me most about returning to a 'new normal' after this coronavirus is that people will forget how deeply it has affected everyone is their own individual. My company over the last I'd say year and a half keep putting out surveys probably every 6mths to get the feel of how employees feel within the workplace. Interestingly, A LOT of people felt that managers do not role model the companies values and that they feel they cannot speak up. This is exactly how I feel now thanks to my previous manager. He tried to belittle my fear going through my cancer and my reflections on my life by saying he'd had a more 'shit life' than I'd had. I really opened up to them (a manager of all people?!?!) because I was encouraged to tell him everything and that they were there for me 'day or night.' When you are vulnerable, you take that sort of thing literally! Turned out that they couldn't handle the emotions and rather than having open communication whilst I was trying to still work when going through treatment, they closed the door on me because it was affecting them so much apparently. I'll NEVER EVER go to a manager EVER again with such very real problems.

A bad manager is as damaging short term as they are long term. Ive personally found that when I used to inherit a previous managers staff, many of those who had been there a long time, wouldnt trust me despite that they didnt know me. So much talent and such a loss.

@@RevorecRecruitmentSolutions exactly what I'm fighting with myself over. There's already been a few tiny things that my new manager has said that has upset me because it reflects my old manager. They don't realise it though and I know it's because I'm so very extra sensitive to the things that are said to me right now. I want to trust my new manager but if my phased return to work isn't managed correctly, I'm gone this time.

I am one of those people that is in management that shouldn’t be. I saw a shiny new promotion and took it. I honestly don’t care about how much money the store makes I care more about how happy my staff is, which isn’t the right way to go about things from a money perspective . I am looking for a job that is a better fit for me My boss is upset that I have been shortening the hours of the store for my mental health and the mental health of my employees because were so short staffed. I refuse to burn myself and my staff out.
@RevorecRecruitmentSolutions

Thats very honest of you. I wouldnt say you shouldnt be in managememt simply because you think of your staff and own well being. If thats the example of good management youve been taught, you need to work for a better teacher. Good management is about balance. People do things for 3 reasons. 1-They have to, 2- they need to, 3-they want to. The best managers create an environment where people want to be there so it almost doesnt feel like work. The idea of doing less hours and less work being directly conducive with mental health is wrong. If you love what you do, the people youre with and believe your work has purpose and holds value thats what is really conducive with good mental health in the work place.

My manager ADMITTED that she doesn’t even like her job at all and she wishes that she never became a manager. I hate my manager so much. She is also the type who lets you take time off when your sick then will turn around and start complaining about attendance and how important it is to show up even when your sick. Also when I was hired for the job they said it wasn’t sales and told me I can get a bonus but I been working here for a year and its customer service and sales. They just call it closures and say we have to meet that goal. We also don’t get a bonus at all even when we exceed the target goal. My job basically just threatens us if we don’t meet the goal

Thanks for doing another suggestion 😊 Great video as always very interesting examples. I use to work as a waiter and my manager was sooo lazy. Sorry to hear about that manipulation you suffered when in sales. That is discusting. In regards to your first example I know how you feel. I Had another job customer rang up I spent over 1 hr on the phone explained about policy and why would won't do what they ask. They swore at me so I hung up after explaining why. I got them again few days later they did nothing I had advised said same stuff as last time eventually got my manager Who let the customer have there own way knowing full well it went against policy. I was not happy I got another job not long after. The managers have to learn from somewhere so whomever teaches them can plays a part in how they manage. Hm I never thought of the upper management pressure getting advancement vs implimentong rules you have been asked to put in place even though may upset others I have had some managers that do enjoy and want to be there too. I am not a manager but I oversee and train volunteers and I always have the notion never ask someone to do something you wouldn't do yourself. One thing I have had some managers ask me is the past is. Do you like me and like working with me. I never know if it is them wanting a ego boost or self esteem issues
@RevorecRecruitmentSolutions
@RevorecRecruitmentSolutions 3 года назад
Thank you once again. Your last point is very interesting as you may never know. Often managers who ask that always keep a professional barrier up. Usually its asked out of insecurity though. Generally thats either because theyre having a hard time and want more of a reassurance than an ego boost or because theyre trying to do a good job but arent confident in their own abilities. You really need some sort of line between a manager and their staff because if you have to make a tough decision everyone should understand its best for business and nothing personal. Ive had to fire ppl for example, which is very unpleasant and you feel youve failed that person, but it needs to be done for the good of the business. E.g they committed gross misconduct or had ongoing and documented performance issues that meant they lost money for the company. Never pleasant to do that to anyone so it can be a lonely job at times.

@@RevorecRecruitmentSolutions I think the people I have worked with that ask me that is self esteem issues. I am a volunteer though so I explain if I didn't enjoy working with them I wouldn't be here. I imagine in that situation if someone is fired. I know depending on the reason other staff cannot be told. But I take it most times they will assume it is because that person had done something wrong and it wasn't personal.
