Like I mentioned earlier in this fold out thingy, we're going to take a look at audience demographics and mass media trends to explain why there are so many adaptions on #Broadway (& why they're like all romcoms from at least 15 years ago). We're gonna break down each side of the argument with a good ol' pros & cons list, talk about my reaction to #TheQueen'sGambit the musical, and you'll meet my clones!

I maintain that legally blonde the musical is better than the movie- it just makes more sense for the campy drama to occur in a theatre setting. That said, I dont like the whole slew of rom com adaptations bc they are just by and large forgettable. I prefer when musicals go off the rails with what they’re adapting. Orpheus and Eurydice but make it reminiscent of the 1930s, War and Peace but make it scene, henry the eighth but make it a pop concert. The element of unexpected is what makes those old stories fun, and the more well-known the source, the less likely you are to stray

Agreed about Legally Blonde! Especially the romance between Elle and Emmett. In the movie it really seemed out of nowhere.

yes! and musicals like six, a historical musical set at a concert! and I think that's why adaptations can be so fun, they need to embrace the original source material but also not be afraid to take creative liberties and lean away from it

The thing is, I love shows like Waitress, Heathers and The Great Comet because you could really see the writers’ love and respect for the original source material and use certain aspects of the original source to spin it in a creative way with staging, music, lyrics, and acting. I think my issue is when you do shows that already have a set source material that is already so beloved by the fandom, you don’t have enough room to play with it or make it into something interesting without confusing those who either know the source material well or aren’t avidly interested in theater.

It's really the difference between adaptations based on financial motives vs artistic ones. Not that there haven't been great adaptations based on money, but they are rarer.

Heathers is one I disagree with, as an adaptation it really doesn’t work to shift like…anything from the movie apart from the most basic form of the plot

My brain still hasn't quite processed Queen's Gambit the musical. It just never struck me as a "I need a musical of this" show. But I'll probably check it out, even if it's just the press shots for the costumes!

Princess bride is my fave movie of ALL TIME, but it's really hard to transfer to stage!!! I'm on the Stardust project right now, got 3 songs written so far, some new back stories locked down...but again, very difficult to transfer.

For original musicals, some I really like: Next to Normal, In the Heights, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and Bare. Things I think could make good stage adaptations are Pan's Labyrinth, The Graveyard Book, The Time Traveler's Wife, Bridge to Terabithia and The Fault in Our Stars.

Everyone is just copying each other (putting examples in brackets) - musicals based on books (Les Misērables) - movies based on books (Harry Potter) - books based on movies (Star Wars) - movies based on musicals (In The Heights) - books based on musicals (Dear Evan Hansen) - musicals based on movies (Mean Girls)

There are a bunch of books based on movies - they're called novelisations and very often based on incredibly popular movies. For example, there are novels based on the star wars series.

My favorite original musical has to be Bandstand! Based on troops coming home from WW2 and using music as a method of healing. It's such a beautiful show and it deserved a much longer run

I'm kind of in the middle when it comes to original vs. adaptation. I like semi-biographical musicals that take the story of someone's life and create a story about something. like "Sunday in the Park with George" or "Evita", "Gypsy", "Hamilton" of course... "Six" RAN with it.

@@faithhernandez764 It's not done yet, but the extreme tl;dr is that it's about a pessimistic dock-washer, his strong-willed wife-to-be, and a serial murderer in a small London port town, written as a narrative on the triumphs and failings of love.

When I started writing my first musical, I started following a bunch of new musical accounts on instagram and I discovered that there are SO MANY musicals being made. There are just... so many. And just knowing how many new (and original) musicals there really are, I feel kinda sad that the vast majority of them, I'll never see. Not just because there are too many to possibly watch, but because so many won't get the recognition they deserve.

Lol if you go back all the way, Hadestown is based on the first surviving opera Orfeo by Monteverdi and probably a lot more things if you go even further back

I was trying to think of my favorite original musical, but I can't think of any that weren't at least loosely based on something else. I have mixed feelings about the Nanny musical. I was excited at first when Adam Schlesinger was going to write the music with Rachel Bloom, but then he died, so I feel like it won't be the same.

Even though adaptations have always existed, it's more noticeable now because of the rise of the ":The Musical' subtitle. I mean, Nine is not named "8½: The Musical" because it sets itself apart by being really different, but if it was made today it totally would. And sometimes adaptations end up being more popular than the source material, like Passion, Oklahoma!, and Merrily We Roll Along. I think it's really important for a show to be something different from the source material, but brand recognition plays a huge factor, if Heathers was named "Seventeen" or "Candy Store" because they're its most popular songs, it wouldn't be as popular because Heathers is already a popular movie and "Heathers: The Musical" has a nice ring to it.

I think people often associate adaptations with adaptations of really popular things, which are the adaptations with the most artistic issues. Musical adaptations of lesserknown things are still adaptations and can be really awesome and bring attention to a story little people knew, but it’s not what people think of when they think of adaptations

My favorites are all adaptations. Hadestown (myth), My Fair Lady (play), Into the Woods (fairy tales), Sweeney Todd (penny dreadful), Camelot (book)... The list goes on. I personally haven’t seen/heard any film to musical adaptations I’ve loved (except Lion King), but I think it’s just most of those scores didn’t wow me.

Okay the con thing is reminding me of a problem me and my friends were talking about a few days ago. The Newsies fandom. Basically, fans of the Broadway are fine, they appreciate the original movie, but prefer the Broadway. But then the 1992 movie fans, tear the Broadway apart and say that the 1992 version has no problems, even though it has plenty of problems. And so yeah, a con of the Broadway coming from something existing already is that it can become toxic from the fans

Thank you 👏🏼 I was just coming here to say this. I love 1992 Newsies. It’s my favourite movie, always was and always will be. If anyone is an OG fan, it’s me. Going into the Broadway, I was a bit wary, sure. But I was blown away by it. It’s everything I wanted and everything I didn’t know I wanted. It made up for things that I didn’t know the OG was lacking. I see it as a new addition to something I already love. It gives me more Newsies to love which doesn’t seem like an issue to me. But seeing some of the OG fandom’s reaction was shocking. I cannot believe the way people tear the Broadway apart. Like I said, I absolutely love it. To each their own, I guess. @@addie_iaccino90 I have seen so many cases where toxic og fans have unnecessary attacked the Bway. On a comparison video for the Bway/tour Jack's a few people showed up in the comments, insulting each actor (and an extra one who was a child but was included) because they weren't Christian Bale. Then they get mad at Katherine existing instead of Denton because there's a better romance existing now, along with the, one comment from someone "I don't care if the story dies or not, the 1992 version is the only good version". I get that there's a lot of nostalgia connected to 92sies for some people, but there isn't a reason to destroy someone else's nostalgia just because they don't like it. It's upsetting to me namely because one woman attacked my friend just because she didn't like a small detail from the original movie. I'm glad you're someone who appreciates them both though

@@addie_iaccino90 I so agree! There was one summer I watched Newsies *every* saturday morning. Ive got it memorized. And I LOVE the stage version too! At first I wasn't too sure about Katheine cuz I loved Denton. But once I got over that, I realized that Denton wouldnt work as well in the stage version. The bigger romance i think is perfect for the stage. I love both versions equally. :)

I was just having a midlife crisis at 15 over pretty much the opposite, the Spring Awakening film adaptation. No offense to Steven Sater but h o o o boy I'm scared. For the qotd I'd definitely say Falsettos! It's gorgeously written and surprisingly underrated, if anyone hasn't checked it out yet you definitely should :)

An adaptation of Bombshell was in the works, but I think it's been shelved. There were never any plans for a Hitlist adaptation though and there still aren't, though they did once do a concert on it ages ago.

I've been waiting for a Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants musical for wayyy too long. I know it had been in the works a few years ago but now I'm starting to think it's been scrapped. 😭 Also, can we get Across the Universe as a stage musical? And if we're going the animated classic route, my vote is for The Road to El Dorado.

My gut reaction to adaptions lately has been "no more." But when i think about it most of my favourite musicals, Fiddler on the roof, Anastasia, even into the woods are adaptions in some form. They all stem from a source outside the theatre. I really liked what you said about how to make an adaption right it has to feel new. Anastasia changed the conflict and villain of the story just enough that it appealed to a broader and more mature audience. Into the woods takes multiple source materials and entwines them together, Fiddler on the Roof is based on characters and a community from a book but is in no way a carbon copy of it. I think my main problem is with the musicals that come from movies (usually comedies) and seem like they are just put on stage to make money. Their isn't anything in them that hasn't already been said in video form. For an adaptation to be done well, it needs to say something or evoke emotions that the source material did not. Side note after rant: My favourite original has to be Bandstand

My favorite original musical is The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals. My favorite musical adaptation of a movie is Heathers. It took an 80s movie with risky topics and turned it into a good modern musical. It only changed what’s needed (like the way JD is written, fusing Betty and Martha, etc). All the necessary stuff like the time period, the Heathers themselves, etc, remained the same. They knew how to write Heathers for a modern era and I’m glad that Hamilton indirectly pulled it out of obscurity

I watched promo videos for Flying Over Sunset last year which was supposed to open previews right when the pandemic started in March. I was so excited for it to be on Broadway because it was completely original and sounded really good just from the few videos they shared. I really hope once Broadway comes back that Flying Over Sunset will also come back :(

I would love a Zootopia the Musical!! Btw, just watched Pride and Prejudice the Musical and was surprised how much I enjoyed it. Favorite original? Oh boy! Okay Next to Normal, Hamilton (does that count?), In the Heights, and Music Man, and Bye Bye Birdie. And I realize as I wrote that, I now see how so many of my fave musicals are adaptations!

honestly, my favorite adaptation musical is frankenstein! i'd argue it's one of the best frankenstein adaptations in general. it's really good at staying true to the source material (unlike other frankenstein adaptations) while also taking creative liberties that just make sense for a musical. it keeps a really well balance between the creature being in wrong & victor being in the wrong, where other adaptations tend to choose one over the other. it has it's flaws (like how it romanticizes victor & elizabeth's relationship when they're cousins), but i'd highly recommend it. the music is absolutely wonderful (also yknow pultizer from newsies? same guy plays the creature! hunter foster plays victor!)

I was also in the zoom class with JRB last summer and I remember his comment about A League of Their Own the Musical. Many of the original shows he wrote had relatively short runs on Broadway, which is disappointing because those types of stories are the ones I want to see more of. Adaptations may be safer financially, but I don't always want to watch a retelling of a story I can watch at home. Sometimes, I want to watch a story that I would otherwise never get to see.

OMG YES as a musical theatre writer it’s so frustrating. It’s already such a male-dominated industry, and as a young woman who writes original musicals, it is so tough to get through the door. Of course, legally blonde is an example of a fantastic adaptation but we need original musicals for the art form/broadway to stay interesting and diverse and innovative 😭 (but I’m not gonna lie: please please please let me adapt confessions of a shopaholic and my big fat Greek wedding into musicals it would be my dream lol)
