You need to have an appreciation for the past, while also having an appreciation for the present. Old heads act like everything was better back in their day, which is annoying. But new fans have no idea about the history of the game, which is also annoying. This whole situation highlights why it’s kind of stupid to compare players across generations

First of all, no MJ no today’s NBA. Him and Chicago Bulls are single-handedly responsible for all the Euro players movement to NBA. You don’t have that perspective of a non-American basketball fan. 90s were so huge and made NBA popular worldwide.

On a side note, debating who is the GOAT is also quite difficult because of the different eras and players playing different positions. Not to mention a youtuber called Low made a good point that when having the GOAT debate with someone we have to decide what do we measure it by, accolades, longevity skill etc.

To be honest, I think holding to the the "Modern NBA Talent is Better" mindset is automatically starting off on the wrong foot, because that's not how talent works. Technology, opportunities, and available things to learn and grow from progress with time, not necessarily the innate abilities of individuals themselves. Saying modern players are naturally more talented than past ones simply because of the passage of time alone is like saying Bono's naturally more talented than Beethoven, or James Patterson more than Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It's really hard to fully appreciate and give fair due to anything that's in the past if you automatically assume that the present is superior merely because it's the present. So no, the current NBA players are not more talented than past ones. They just have access to more things that maximize their unique talents. Jordan would still be Jordan in today's era, Wilt would be Wilt, etc. As a matter of fact, they'd probably be even better. And the same goes for current players. Giannis would still be a physical menace in the post like D-Rob and Malone, but he'd never develop his handles because they'd tell him to cut it out like they did Ralph Sampson. Jokic would still be a beast, but he'd be stuck overseas until he's past his prime like Arvydas Sabonis was. Steph would still shoot the lights out, but it'd be more at a Reggie Miller level than the otherworldly level he's at now. He'd also be far more lethal from midrange.

Very well put. You learn from what came before you and adapt and push it forward. The league will evolve again somehow and we will look back and think why doesn't said player do this and that. End of the day we will all have a bias to what we grew up watching. It doesn't mean what came before was trash, just different. Which by no means disregards or diminishes the greats that came before.

TLDR: Every era has its pros and cons, but we need to stop comparing eras. Different rules mean completely different competitive demands, which is why MJ would never claim his title as the GOAT As someone who grew up with Bull's MJ, I think there's a lot to appreciate modern NBA. Also, something keep in mind is how the triangle offense is the 90s version of emphasizing ball movement among 3 players and mismatches in a physical era. Now, it's a true team sport where a successful team needs everyone to shoot and defend. I think the biggest problem right now is how offense and pace is prioritized over defense (I mean look at how many traveling, double dribbles, and offensive charges are uncalled). Sure, in the playoffs, defense becomes important, but they aren't highlighted enough. Plus, faster pace can slowly wear and tear the players. Also, Im not sure if all great modern players can play the 90s because hand checking and brutally physical defense limits a lot of basketball skills such as the 3 point shot (try shooting far when someone always a hand in your front) That being said, I think LBJ can do well in the 90s because he's today's Magic Johnson while MJ's extremely competitive spirit (reminds me of Jimmy Butler with Kawhi's successes) would carry him. I mean he had an above average 3 pt shot in a physical era and even made 7 3 pts at 58% against the Warriors (irony)

I love the current as much as I do but I also love the feel the 90's. Hakeem, Magic, MJ the most inspirational and great nba players of all time. The defense and the offense in the 90s was entertaining and they played good basketball. From where this starts with the Lebron vs MJ debate I love Lebron but I also love MJ and have respect for both of them and the era they played in. Both eras have negatives and positives. You should never compare eras because they both are way different.

I find it funny how basketball is the only sport where eras disrespect each other instead of appreciating and learn from each other. Every other sport doesn't do that; so, why this one? This is one of the reasons why I say NBA fans are some of the worst and most hypocritical sports fans in the world.

On the community posts of NBA on ESPN EVERY comment was about the defense being taken away. It makes it out like everyone wants more defense which just isn't true, a lot of us are fine with the current offense. Social media can be really tribalist, so to me this movement is a counter to people complaining about defense

Let someone like Jordan, Larry bird, Kareem, or Reggie miller grow up in the same era as people like ant and sga, and they would show you. Old players had plenty of talent, they just hadn’t developed as many skills.

And it would take like a minute for Jordan and past stars to start hitting the air mailed 3s Steph invented, just like it took Lebron and the rest of the NBA, and they'd adjust to the new strategies recent analytics has birthed. Military historians say you could drop a great general from ancient times like Julius Ceasar into the Napoleonic Wars and he'd figure things out pretty quickly and you'd want him leading your army within a few months. Yet if you dropped Napoleon into WWII the modernization revolution in every area of life would require years to get to speed and who knows how his exact traits and interests would match what is needed. And that was before we were dropping people on the moon. The NBA hasn't that type of revolution since the 90s, or even the 60s. Jordan would still quickly conquer like Julius Ceasar in today's NBA. He'd still have the best hangtime and be in the argument for best athlete. Even an ancient legend like Jerry West could touch the top of the square at age 35 jumping in Converse and that same year was 2nd in the NBA in steals per game with 2.6 as well as .7 blocks, which was the first year (73-74) those stats were kept and his last year. Give that man half a year of modern sports science and new shoes and he'd be blowing by old Buicks like Harden and Luka. The freak athletes of every era like West and Wilt will still be freaks, and every era will have unathletic guys like Harden dominating as well. The change in athleticism from the 90s is hardly discernible.

I'm aware my opinion is just another one that will get lost in the internet void. But I'll share it anyway. I must say from the start that the argument of today's players being more talented and skilled is disingenuous. It looks like players are more skilled, but it is not necessarily that way. Players today look more skilled mainly because of the rules and how referees call the games. Referees are very lax calling basic infractions like traveling, carrying, and double dribbling. Many players will look like wizards with genius handles under those circumstances. When there's no really hard defense opposing you, you'll look like a superstar scoring uncontested layups and 3-pointers. Let's keep it real. There's no way to really quantify how much better are players today if compared to players from 30 or 40 years ago. That being said, I'm confident that if players from the 90s play under today's rules and conditions, they won't look as untalented as many people say. Under the same token, if players from the 2020s play under the 80s/90s rules and conditions, they won't look as super talented and skilled as they allegedly are. Unfortunately, we will never know for real. This stupid trend of 'We Done With The 90s' is not about a clash between generations of fans. This is mainly about LeBron James fanboys who can't cope with the reality of their idol not being universally loved and respected, much less considered as the GOAT. Because they can't win the GOAT debate with arguments and statistics, they now are relying on trashing an entire decade of NBA history. Many consider the 90s as the gold era of the NBA. For me, the best period of the over seven decades of the NBA's existence extends from 1979 to 2010. The highlight of that period was the Chicago Bulls dynasty (1991 - 1998). So, it's not enough to demean Jordan's skills. They have to demean the entire decade to create and push the narrative that Jordan can't be the GOAT because his era was trash. It goes without saying that it's completely stupid. It's no coincidence the 'done with the 90s' trend began shortly after LeBron reached 40k points scored. It's a great achievement that, regardless of how much ESPN and mainstream media celebrated it, most NBA fans didn't care about it. Also, the allegations of LeBron's alleged usage of steroids/PEDs are starting to gain traction. LeBron's career is starting to look too similar to Barry Bonds'. To counter the lack of love and cheating allegations, LeBron fanboys took the stupid path of trashing the 90s. Since LeBron became the defacto face of the NBA in 2011, the league has regressed in quality and popularity. Sure, players today are more "skilled" and "athletic". But what they have in skills and athleticism they lack in competitiveness, basic fundamentals, discipline, and respect for the audience. You cannot expect the NBA to be highly regarded and liked considering how overrated and uninspiring the present era is. The NBA of the 80s, 90s, and early 00s, set the standard of what is great basketball. Today's NBA is not living to the standard. Michael Jordan set the bar for what it is to be the best in basketball. LeBron James has never reached that bar, much less set a new one. Young fans and media pundits can't or won't acknowledge that because acknowledging that would destroy their narratives and their minds would explode due to cognitive dissonance. The only way some of them can shield their minds is by keeping with the hypocrisy and lies. Others will keep with the narratives to perpetuate the discussions because is what's best for their personal and financial interests. Those who really like or are complacent with today's NBA can feel fortunate to receive the product they like. But do not pretend to not receive pushback if you keep defending today's weaknesses by bashing past strengths.

I feel like preferring different eras is fine, but disrespecting different eras is dumb. Like, I prefer slow, grind it out, post dominant iso-ball era play, cause I grew up in the 2000s. My dad grew up in the 70s, so he preferred the Showtime run n gun style of play, it makes sense. I'm always gonna prefer that over the travelfest I see on TV today, but I won't disrespect someone for liking the game today more than in the past.

Just because the players are faster and stronger now, though, doesn’t mean the game itself or the league itself wasn’t at its peak in the 90s. That said, much of society was in the 90s. Basketball, hockey, pro wrestling, hell, you could argue that media as a whole peaked in the 90s. And that’s coming from a kid born in ‘98.

In 60/70's, dribbling touching anything other than the top of the ball is 9 times out of 10 called as a carry. They are playing a different sport now, and the player's skills reflect that. Don't denigrate players for doing their best with the rules they were forced to play under.

Kyrie’s ball-handling probably wouldn’t be allowed in the 90s. Just watch what Allen Iverson would get called for even in the late 90s. There’s a lot of examples of great ball handlers from the pass trying popular moves of today and be called of for a carry or double dribble. I went back and watch games from the 90s since I grew up in the 2000s. The rules were very strict on ball handling.

I agree with most of your points. I think comparing eras has always been silly and a lot of times dishonest. But I will say the rules back them were so much more strict. So if you threw Kyrie Irving into the 90's league, he would get called for traveling literally every play. I am not saying ALL 90's players would be able to have that skill, but I am saying players were not allowed to be skilled in that way, Travels were called if your hand hit the side of the ball when dibbling, let alone palming it. lol And also the gather step wasn't allowed. So a lot of players today would get called for traveling, for doing moves they normally do. They are just two wildly different times, where I think each era would struggle being in the opposite era.
