Hard drugs consumption increased since weed was legalized in Canada. Now the government is starting to give out hard drugs to addicts to lower death caused by illegal drugs in couple provinces. In addition, hard drugs are now legal for personal consumption. Yes, it is a gateway.
If you ban weed, you need to ban alcohol and gambling as well. It's how frequently you choose to engage in the behavior that makes it a problem. Drinking is fine, but alcoholism is not.
Agree, I really don't mind all these things got banned together with weed. Since I don't really consume them. Let's brings all these to the parliament then.
I usually like what Talking Point is presenting but this episode just reeks of government oversight. If they're so up on banning drugs, what about tobacco? Did they even interview people who take it recreationally but are not addicted to it? And what about medical usage of it?
This is round two of the story on Undercover Asia. This time it is not even balanced out by the Thai perspectives which were shown previously. Credit where credit is due though, if we read between the lines of what is presented here on Talking Point, it isn't all bad; but they definitely framed it as such. For example, the point about THC being 'the evil guy' was mentioned, the fact that people can research online on the potential benefits and harms of cannabis, and also the point about cannabis being a gateway drug more because of the environment of people that deal with it, rather than the plant's potential use and misuse as a drug. Still disappointed though...
Why do weed addicts always like to bring up tobacco? This is a documentary about cannabis not tobacco. There's more than enough documentaries about tobacco and in not a single one you see commenters go "but what about weed!!!!". Makes you look like a child.
@@sebastiangruenfeld141 It is the classic whataboutism. Cause they know that their base argument holds little water so all they can do is divert. i rather we not face not thailand is facing right now tbh. On a side note, I am all for banning tabacco but that is a different topic for a different time
yes cannabis can be quite dangerous but there was actually quite a bit misinformatoion in this video. for example NOBODY is spraying cannabis with thc, thats not a thing, however people do spray more and more spice/synthetic cannabinoids on weed which can be MUCH MORE dangerous than thc (and this is a problem created by prohibition). Also why is it so bad that popular people use weed? i mean like 99% of all celebrities drink alcohol and nobody cares either
Did you even see the video? Cannabis affects brain development. Literally makes you stupid. Do you want to be stupid? Because stupid makes you take more weed and makes you even more stupid. Its a vicious cycle
You can’t preface your comment with cannabis is dangerous and then go on to say this is misinformation (which the entire video is) . Cannabis isn’t dangerous nor harmful and it’s sad to see some isolated island banana republic hold onto outdated science
@@Dark_Dial_Watches have you actually read the science? Cannabis isn’t all wonderland medicine. It can make people addicted and even stunt brain growth in adolescence. In some cases it can „cause“ psychosis if the individual already had a predisposition. It is way less harmful then alcohol, but definitely not harmless. If it is used in from time to time and not frequently, then cannabis most likely wont do anything bad. And cannabis does have its fair uses in medicine. But it still has some dangers associated to it especially in adolescence, and i hate how many people pretend its a completely safe drug. And the highest danger from cannabis is actually cannabis treated with synthetic cannabinoids and less so but still a big factor cannabis with extremely high levels of thc and close to no cbd. All results of the black market. Which is a reason why i‘m for legalizion.
Hope one day CNA will have an episode on the alcohol crisis in Singapore. Oh nooooo, alcohol is all good, alcohol does not cause death on the roads, fights in public, rapes and abuse in family homes. Instead they'll make an episode of the wonderful blessing of alcohol in our lives and promoting the Singaporeans to drink up and let your hair down and have a good time
If you drink alcohol and cause problems, that's your problem. If you smoke cannabis and cause problems, that's the cannabis problem. That's CNA's logic.
I go home after work, have dinner, and than have a smoke to relax after. My kids are almost grown and I have a good stable job. In the meantime some poor sap in a different country is arrested and filmed for a news program filled with action music and talk of addiction. Weed addiction is actually lower than alcoholism according to the studies we have looking at users.
@@mingzmings88 The concept in business is accessbility to goods. But it is hard to measure what goes underground so its lower in studies. that’s the point im making.
Alcohol is more of a poison than weed and yet it’s condoned in this video and also legal in Singapore. Hilarious. I love how the host emphasizes how disgusting it is to leave joints around but what about leftover vodka that toddlers could slurp? At the very least, focus on fentanyl which is actually a horrible drug.
@Broski Snowski Food is very addictive, humans and other animals can die without it. Humans and other animals can live without cannabis but not without food. Human body produces sugar from calories even no sugar was consumed.
I almost classify this video as propaganda. Like many other comments, alcohol and tobacco are both legal to over 21’s and carry their own health risks. Prohibition is clearly old thinking and doesn’t work. Based on this video that thinking it’s still Singapore’s go to. There have been studies in the USA that post legalisation, youth consumption goes down. The allure of cannabis goes down. Can you please provide some medical references regarding the link to cannabis (gateway) and harder drugs. You reference it in the video. It’s the least you could do.
Exactly. Canabis is less addictive than coffee itself. Lots of people lying in this video such as saying one time use us dangerous etc. This video is misinformation
which one is easier to get addicted to ? which one has a higher rate of dependency? what are people's purposes for consuming alcohol or weed? There are people who drink to get drunk or high feeling or to 'escape from your problems' but there are also people who do it to appreciate the flavour, pairing with food and the overall experience. But why do people do weed? The same negatives as people who do alcohol? And the benefits? There have only been very few proven, credible benefits of cannabis, most often being used for pain control e.g. morphine, see where it's going? There have been reports of 'many' other benefits but there are also reports that contradict them. But if cannabis is used as a tightly, regulated and controlled healthcare drug (if there are no less harmful alternatives) for people who really need them, then I'm all for it.
The part at 10:38 where they compare alcohol and weed is eye opening. Alcohol has worse side effects, it is more addictive, more expensive, etc. And still the host and the interviewed pretend to not understand why youth is shifting from alcohol to marijuana. They send the message that marijuana is more dangerous because it's illegal, but that's circular reasoning.
Lol, I've been smoking up for 15 years.. My life is fine, have a steady job, loving family. Nothing like what this video portrays. This is like a documentary from 80's Reagan era..
The comments section really displays how ignorant and close minded many Singaporeans are. - You need to specify which "drug" you are talking about as their effects vary greatly. - Weed is less damaging than alcohol or nicotine - Many drugs are highly addictive with more side effects, including medical ones that are used in Singapore. - Weed addiction happens in 1 in 10 users estimated, and varies with age and frequency of use - Alcoholism is much more damaging. - Assuming someone is consuming weed just because he is against it's ban just makes you look like a clown. At the end of the day, large majority of Singaporeans are manipulated by the government into docile sheep, none of us can do anything to change this either way. Their country, their rules, we are just their workers that happen to be born here.
The government’s stance on drugs is often influenced by political and social factors, it was never really for the benefit of its citizens. While some drugs can be harmful and addictive, others are less so. The government’s approach to drug policy has been criticized for being overly punitive and ineffective
@@maximus6884 they tried to make public spaces for smoking that are nt on the main road in the cities but at secluded corner to avoid transferring smoke into the healthy general population lungs
The breweries must be pressurising the government because they worry about cannabis being a more popular drug than alcohol (and people do not get violent with hash).

All drugs will have good and bad effects depending on the way it is used. Morphine is an incredibly effective and useful drug to relieve severe pain especially for after major surgeries. But morphine too is extremely addictive and can also cause serious or life threatening medical issues in its ease of overdosing. And yet we still use Morphine in careful medical prescriptions because we cannot overlook its medical benefits. Why not do the same to Cannabis, make it medically available through proper medical perscriptions; it is harmful when abused or misused but when used correctly we too should not overlook its benefits. Whlist you are pondering on this subject, remember that cigarettes and alcohol are readily available in Singapore that are undoubtly the cause of various medical illnesses (and also agreed by government it is harmful when abused). In Singapore, tobacco kills approximately 2,500 smokers and 250 non-smokers each year. Singapore also has a relatively high prevalence of 12-month heavy drinking of 12.6% of adults, and lifetime heavy drinking of 15.9% of adults. What possible justification is there for allowing these highly addictive drugs in Singapore despite all these harmful irreparable damage to society? Oh yeah, tax money. This talking point documentary is incredibly bias and probably more so because it is heavily screened by the Central Narcotics Bureau to send the bias mesasge it has been trying to convince for decades that Cannabis is as harmful as Heroin or Methamphetamine; and demands decades of jail sentencing and/or being sent to the gallows for being an offender.
Prohibition is causing much harm and its benefits are few. Use has been reduced in some suburban communities but in poorer communities, drugs are still widely used and prohibition has totally failed in its objective of reducing the availability of drugs. The consequences of prohibition fall on poor and powerless people.
Because it filming, if not all hokkien vulgarity will come from the CNB but I did saw once when they raid and arrest a man around 50plus in gentle because he is totally gone and very frail in health and they did it slow and gentle because anything happen to him during the arrest, the CNB will be in deep trouble. The old folk kenna arrest one really too weak even in walking. The CNB officers still must hold him while walking to the car in slow motion.
hahahahaha! Trust me... there is nothing decent about the CNB and how they operate or handle civilians. They are extremely harsh and extreme in their methods. Of course, all of it is for the greater good.
Weed is a redundant addiction. We already have plenty of addictions from tobacco to alcohol, we don't need ANOTHER. Less weed for Singapore, more for your grandma.
As someone who smoked everyday for a few years then suddenly stop, the beginning of this video is hilarious st best. Quitting smoking cigarettes was harder than stopping smoking weed. I hope all of Asia will legalize one by one.
Same, I smoked like you Stoped for six months when I was living in Asia and for a few weeks recently due to surgery and my reaction with anesthesia. No problems honestly, maybe just extra tired or missing the hand to mouth thing but that's really it. You can go smoke your brains out in Thailand!!
Agreed - here in California before it was legal, it was readily available and the pot here is top notch coming from Humbolt county so you get serious high but I have never experienced any cravings and have just stopped indulging now that I am older so yeah no addiction whatsoever. The myth that it's a gateway drug is just scare tactics. Wonder why there are so many videos from CNA on cannabis - guess the S'porean government is getting paranoid and for nothing really.
@@cinpeace353 What an odd question. Why did I quit? Well it's not something I "need" to do, it's just something I did in the past. The same with smoking cigarettes, I don't think I need a particular reason to quit, if I decide to quit then just do it. People have all sorts of reasons to quit.
To be honest, the only drug i can compare cannabis to is coffee. I doubt 99% of people will understand this comparrison given the general flawed preception of weed. Note - we shouldn’t give caffeine to children either…..

The shocked face of the reporter during interviews haha. Had my share of weed during university days. Good times! It's much easier on the body than alcohol to take the edge off after a stressful week. Not much interest in it as an older guy. It's now fully legal in my country and I don't see it around anymore than before. I would not say it's not harmful of course. Edibles and synthetic especially can be more dangerous. In terms of comparison to other drugs, I think classical psychedelics are safer and weed is safer than the rest. It would still fall in the personal range bad choices of an adult, as junk food, cigarette and alcohol. Actually the social and health harm is much worst for alcohol and we trust people with it. For a good overview of the health effects of cannabis, huberman has an excellant podcast on the subject.
Yes, good for you. I think Singaporean have better way to deal with stress, there are marathon event, gym, good food, and coffee shop everywhere across the country. I think it still cheaper than weed even if you spend for everything above.
Out of curiosity, how are edibles dangerous? I have heard of no overdose deaths from edibles, and the danger mostly seems to be about children or pets eating them by accident (all of whom survive) rather than irresponsible usage by adults.
@@constitutionalcarrot3720 its basically a different drug when it's eaten. It is first decarboxilated and then processed by the liver. It ends up being much stronger, like factor 4, and the effect don't saturate as quickly as if innaled. It also takes about an hour to kick in, so it's hard to manage the desired effect accurately. The typical bad story is someone makes some brownies at home, eat some, don't feel much and decide to eat more just to start feeling the effect 5 minutes after. The effect is then way too strong and they might have a horrible time. Some might need to get medical attention then. This can't happen while inhaled as the effect is almost instant and it saturates, meaning it gets harder and harder to get higher.
@@constitutionalcarrot3720 I mentioned it needs to be decarboxilated. This means it needs to be put in the oven for a while. It is then fat soluble. They act like it’s a personal problem not a societal one. What is society forcing its young people to conform to? Is there safe community support for youth? Are parents economically successful and emotionally well-adjusted?
people can do all sorts of these stuff for tons of reasons, I say mostly thru their circle & friends influence. u hav any evidence that being poor makes you wanna do drugs? Is that even true for the majority of population? Its easy to say, if you have better ideas why not share your ideas or volunteer with the gov services. Talk is easy.
I live in London: I don’t mind if people use it. We just need to create good etiquette around its use as the stuff just stinks if it’s smoked and I know my neighbours consume and it wafts into my bedroom window in the summer which is frustrating for me. I think in a residential environment people should close their windows or choose to consume it as an edible in a baked good. Whippet canisters, balloons and drinks bottles should be thrown in the bin but people seem to be happy to litter which is unfortunate and I think more of a problem than people getting high. We also need to define types of addiction as there is process addiction and those who are actually dependent on the chemical substance and its effect on the brain, which is very high among alcoholics and smokers/vapers due to nicotine. Where is the outrage on those that drink in excess and the damage that alcohol does to the body and society? Why were the visuals for the vaping segment you did more light-hearted? Banning something creates an unhealthy situation around its use and is exactly what the producers and dealers want because they can charge more, its content is unregulated (in synthetic and harder drugs this results in deaths), not taxed and they can use violence to control production and distribution. People can then buy and use as much as they can afford so we can't monitor usage either. The whole illegality aspect makes it more desirable when people are forced to follow the rules for very little return in day-to-day life. The war on drugs has never worked and countries that take a more open approach with education, harm reduction and treatment at its core have better results regarding addiction problems and crime. It's funny that Singapore has the toughest laws and people are still finding a way to use, this in a city-state where everything can be monitored and the police aren't overstretched. It's an ideal situation that many countries do not have. When people ask why and don't answer the question with deep honesty about what is going on in the world and choose to go the moral panic route it's disappointing. Look at the structural problems in a capitalist society that continues to tell people: "you are not enough, you do not have enough, you don't deserve to be paid enough, you are locked into staying the same due to lack of social mobility with expensive education prospects, you must live with very little and be happy with it, everything about you is wrong but this product will solve it, you cannot just be yourself, something or everything about you is wrong" Is it any surprise people have depression and will turn to something to help them disconnect from themselves and their problems? We don't deal with the real problems, just blame easy targets.
Bro....I like all the point you make. Everything make sense. We human living in a society. If the society bad, so...the people also going into that way. All is about how we supporting each other and not just blaming others meanwhile we living in a good life. Not everyone success in their life, so as the person who is success must and it's an obligation for them to share their happy life with the unlucky person. We must look out each other.
As though London is a place to model after… a dangerous place after dark with druggies around the corners waiting for rob the next guy. Is Singapore interested to become like that? No…
A little education can be worst, I’m shocked to see so many people support use of marijuana because of fabulous arguments! Let’s remain status quo, say no to drugs in sg!
Singapore has a higher consumption rate of meth and heroin than any western country. No idea what they're doing, but it doesn't work. End prohibition and put dealers out of work!
They need to study other countries where pot has been legalized. It’s only a problem when it gets connected to criminal access. Making it a crime makes it more trouble than it really is.
Legalize illegal activities as a way to lower crime is disasters. Look at US. Their social problems are increasing. Violence, drug addicts, homeless, ... It is stupid to make the public think it is ok once you legalized illegal activities.
The first 30 seconds is like a 1920’s prohibition and propaganda film and that weed looking like absolute poison… get a grip Singapore and reform your drug laws…
I think more and more Western countries are legalizing cannabis because their societies are becoming more and more chaotic and stressful. Legalizing it chills out the population a bit and less civil unrest. Singapore can consider legalizing it eventually since it's not much worse than alcohol and better for you than cigarettes. There are also lots of medicinal uses for marijuana. Pain relief one of them and marijuana derivatives like CBD oil which has all sorts of good benefits with which don't produce a high since THC is reduced or removed. It helps as anti inflammatory helps with anxiety and sleep as well as immune system booster. Fun fact. Marijuana was once an herb used by traditional Chinese medicine. It was for digestive symptoms. Regulate it tax it and standardize it so it's safe. The reality is many people who get addicted to anything is because they have a personality that is prone to addictions. If not marijuana he'll be an alcoholic or a fatty food binger. People even can get high off ink markers and cough syrup. A lot of things can have destructive outcomes if you abuse it. In order to succeed a society must adapt. If something has potential to benefit your society you should at least keep an open mind and not draw hard lines. What if one day it's discovered a marijuana product is found to cure a serious disease? Will Singaporeans have to travel to Thailand to get cured?!
Alcohol is way worse because so many people when really drunk can be such rude violent idiots. Weed, you just fall asleep if u smoke to much. There is no comparison between the 2.
