I'm a day sleeper also (without sleep mask or closed drapes) but my vitamin D (sunshine vitamin) levels were really low and now I take supplements. Without artificial light I'd probably switch to night sleep.

my body naturally wants to go to bed around 7 AM (it's bright outside where I live), and sleep until 4 PM. During the summer this always happens consistently, despite my efforts to make myself have a normal sleep schedule. Weirdly enough, I *can't* fall asleep until there's light.

Consider looking into Delayed Sleep Phase syndrome. But you are by no means alone. I find 48 hour days (32-34 up, 14-16 asleep, and I turn in between 7-11am every other day) easier to work with.

It's probably because it distracts you from things that'll make you anxious like waking up early in the morning or things you have to do the day after. I have trouble sleeping at night but pass out on the couch while watching TV or in my phone

It is a shame more doctors are not aware of this syndrome. Only took about 15-20 years before I was diagnosed with the most extreme example of such my former sleep specialist had ever encountered (a very knowledgable specialist in sleep disorders). These days I find 48 hour days (32-34 awake, 14-16 asleep) more conducive to sleep as it also leaves me tired enough to sleep through my chronic pain (fibromyalgia, myofascial pain syndrome). So, from one to another, hello!

I haven't been diagnosed at all and I have never been able to sleep well during the night. My doctors have said I do have a sleeping disorder but they never look into it so I don't really know what to do.

I haven't been diagnosed with the fibromyalgia by a doctor that 'matters' but your sleep cycle is the exactly the same that I seem to fall into, even though I'm constantly pushing myself to have a normal sleep schedule. Had no clue this was even a thing, thanks for the comment.

I'm an insomniac who also suffers from day-night reversal, which means I'm more apt to fall asleep when the sun is out and I feel more energized during the night (my father, lowkey, calls me a vampire); or I don't sleep at all. I've had this reversal disorder for years. When I needed to start doing 1st shift work, the struggle to go to bed at night became all too real.

TheyCallMePhoenix I used to have a 3rd shift job and it was perfect. But the company eliminated that shift and shrunk it down to 2 shifts only. I've been looking for another 3rd shift job, but they're pretty hard to come by.

I think the reason we're more inclined to be awake during the day is agriculture. If you're nocturnal you're not going to be awake all day growing the food you need to survive. Hunting works great but you can't stockpile food like you can when you grow it. This way we're awake for the day and a little bit of the night if we need that extra boost of food.

The diurnal aspect of our brains developed long before we began farming. We evolved from species at were diurnal themselves, and definitely didn't farm.

I've been nocturnal since I was at least 16 and now 15+ years later I work overnight, and I'm used to it. I have no issues sleeping whenever I'm tired, be it day or night.

I am a night person. I rarely go to bed before 4 am. Light does not bother me and I can sleep during the day with windows open to the daylight without problem. Sound however.... nope. I need absolute silence (or white noise to drown out the background cacophony) to get any type of a deep, restful sleep.

I can't sleep in the dark if I'm not sleeping beside someone. I have to have a light so I have 2 lamps in my room when I sleep. I also keep my tv on and turned up. I find it easier to sleep with light and electronics. I'm also a night owl. But basically, I'll sleep anywhere.

I love night time, but my job and dogs won't allow it. Every so often I still do it though. Like tonight. I love feeling like I'm the only one alive knowing I won't be bothered by anyone. And the night air always feels cooler and smells fresher.

I actually find it comforting to go to sleep when the sun is out. I do it a lot. For a long period of time I'd go to bed when I got home from school and wake up at midnight.

I've always been able to sleep wherever/whenever if I'm tired. Day, night, outside, inside, wherever. I can drink a moderate amount of caffeine prior to going to bed. I can fall to sleep within minutes of going to bed. I'm like an Olympic athlete of sleep. I hear this doesn't work as much the older you get, so far I'm in my early 30's and going strong. My only enemy is heat. I can't sleep well when I'm over heated, which is anywhere over high 70's. So I guess my weakness is summer without AC.

I'm an insomniac. But I use my brother for comparison. He needs complete darkness and silence to sleep. Me being a soldier sleep better with lights and noises. As hard as it is for me to sleep, when it is quiet I wake up. For me quiet means a problem. When I try to sleep I have lights on and a TV on for sound. That's how I sleep best when I can. I usually sleep to docs of war. I even try to stay up durring the day. But for some reason I am always tired when the sun is up and rejuvenated when the moon rises. I've gone many days with no sleep trying to sleep at night by not sleeping during the day.

I am. I used to wake up super early all the time when I was a kid, but when I hit puberty I became more nocturnal like all teens and just never switched back. Now I can't function waking up early. I genuinely feel better getting less sleep so long as it is at the right time then I do getting more sleep but waking up early. I tried to cover a week's worth of days at work on 1st shift for extra money instead of my usual second and I was a senseless mess by day 3. I had to go back.

I sleep during the day, usually going to bed at around 6AM. I have garbage bags taped over my windows, though, to block the light out. Usually, I wake up at 1-3PM.

My sleep schedule just rolls around the clock, i go to sleep when i'm tired and wake up when i naturally wake up. On general, i stay up 14-20 hours and sleep 10-12, i always have the same amount of ease of sleeping no matter the lighting, and my sleep is generally pretty deep and normal.

I used to have a really bright alarm clock in my room and I would always cover it up when I was going to sleep. my mom would always say that it's not necessary to cover it up; that if I just closed my eyes, I'd be fine. recently, I got rid of the alarm clock, so minus some very dim lighting outside the window, my room is dark. I fall asleep so much easier now. long story short, I think it's interesting how light travels through the eyelid and can actually impact you that much.

I'm usually awake at night. I prefer night time because it's colder and I like feeling cold. I get what people say the recommended amount of sleep is. I go to sleep at around three pm and then I wake up at twelve or one am. All of this started because I didn't want to deal with things during the day. If I'm invited to something then I can easily go a day with skipping my sleep but then I can't rest at night so I basically go a day without sleep.

For some reason, I find it harder to sleep in complete darkness because I can't tell the difference whether my eyes are closed or not. And when I have to reach for the blanket or adjust my pillow, it's a little frightening not being able to see anything at all. Sometimes weird things happen when it's completely dark and I'm not tired at all. My eyes start seeing weird colors spiraling in weird patterns, like green waves washing over the blackness, or purple and blue mandalas expanding outward in a kaleidoscope. My eyelids and eyeballs hurt a little when this happens. This effect goes away immediately when I look at something with color or light though, like when I turn on my phone or the lamp. Is this just me or am I crazy?

It's not hard for me at all, I get to bed around 9-10 a.m and get up in the late afternoon (work 12 hour shifts 6 am-6 pm). Been that way for over 12 years, and actually, if I go somewhere in the morning I start to feel weird and get sleepy even more. When I see light I get sleepy, when I see it dark outside then I start to wake up/perk up (usually around 9 or 10 p.m.). The chemical that is released when you see light that helps you wake up for me is what I get when I see dark, the opposite. I dunno, my body has been trained I guess, lol. I was able to convert to a day person a few years back for a vacation, and it took about a week in total to really get on that schedule, where seeing light didn't make me sleepy.

What about naps? Or "siestas"? Is it a different form of "sleep", because we do it during the day, usually not in fully dark rooms? I personally feel a lot more rested when I sleep during the day, I also like waking up with the sun's warmth on my body and oh boy, nothing's getting me out of bed when the room is fully dark - I'd probably sleep for 12h non-stop.

i tried many times to sleep at night at turn off the light and i actually become more alert and keep on thinking instead of sleep.....i have to turn the tv on to sleep while watching something and i could never sleep before 2 am...even as a kid i used to stay awake at bed till after midnight

I usually go to sleep at around 4-6 am and wake up at whatever time the sun rises and becomes bright enough (or the earth tilts lol), but no matter when you wake me up I only feel tired at around 4 am, and I'm naturally an insomniac but idk it doesn't really bother me, probably because I'm still young.

I wrap the arm of my snuggie around my eyes when I need to sleep to block out light (Yes I have a snuggie. It was a graduation present and it rocks). I also used to lay my digital clock face-down when I needed to sleep, because it had intensely bright blue light. That messed up the cord, and the next clock I got was a normal red-light one. That isn't as bad.

I am naturally a night person.I would not have it any other way. It is amazing how many people think being a night owl is wrong or evil. Especially a lot of elderly folk, many of them can't seem to understand that there are people out and about while they sleep.

I love the night and don't really like the day time. I just feel more productive at night when no one can bother me and it's nice and dark out. Day time makes me feel weird lol. Sometimes the sun is nice and it can be pretty out, but I would take night time over that any day (:

I'm nocturnal and i need to be; i sleep so much better in the day, i dream better, and feel completely rested waking up at sunset. When i sleep at night i have nightmares and i wake up multiple times in the night with anxiety, i get water retention all over, and i feel like i was hit by a bus in the morning; it's just not for me. ill stick to being apart of the 80% of mammals

To me, it is not a mystery at all. Early humans had to hunt and gather food during the day time because they did not have night vision eyes, and they had to stay in safe areas during the night time to avoid nocturnal predators. In order to save the energy to be active, finding food, during the day time, they had to sleep during the less productive time, which was the night time. Doesn't this explain it perfectly?????

Dont Matter what you say I will always need my night light cause this darkness kills me it feels like something is stalking me and having sleeping paralyzes as a child/young teenager didnt helped at all. But I reduced my light to a smaller light I try but I dont feel ready to sleep without a light. The only time I feel better to sleep without lights is when somebody sleeps with me in the room. :3

Before even watching this video, I assume the reason we aren't nocturnal is because we can't see anything when it's dark, making it nearly impossible to get work done.

Funny how I am a natural night person and my body heat is hot as the devil at night, as if I am running a fever; during he day my body is cold and I don't like to touch hands with people because they feel out about how cold they are. I love the night shifts more than day shifts

Hear me out on this one... I do think that night owls exist and I'm most likely one of them. First of all, yes i do prefer dark rather than light to sleep, but that is most likely because light makes me feel exposed and dark feels safe and cozy.. Kinda like sleeping out in the open or inside a cave or whatever shelter. The whole "leptin makes us less hungry" part also doesn't seem to be the case for me, I eat the most at night. I realized that i like being up at night way back when i was a kid(21 now) pretty much as soon as my parents stopped forcing me to bed early :D Every vacation/holiday id flip my sleep schedule and stay awake all night.. Even today it's easy for me to stay up all night but its sooo hard to "fix" it. On average i sleep for 9-10 hours. This one might be weird but i like going out at night, for walks or whatever.. When going up the stairs or waiting for the elevator i don't turn on the lights..Might be a vampire though

i hate it when there's a minimal light source even if it's a tiny gap of light. The room needs to be completely dark. Or even better darker than dark... advance darkness.

I would think they are but it is also more likely that most people didn't keep such things burning at night because either they wanted to save resources while not really needed or because they did not want the chance of their houses burning down while they slept.

Will L While awake, of course, but to keep it burning at night ... I learned as a kid to not keep candles going at night during a power outage to prevent fires and less items in the house are flammable in modern times.

It wasn't discussed here, but it's often said it's blue and green lights that keep you awake. Which is why 'night mode' on newer smartphones makes the screen more yellow. Yellow like the colour of fire? Speculation but it seems to make sense.

I've been trying to change my sleep lifestyle from night to day, I try and stay awake with coffee and during the day I am able to sleep for roughly half the day.

i highly disagree i'm human and i'm NATURALLY nocturnal. i'm dead fuckin serious there's several reasons why -i'm scared to death of the dark, so i sleep in the daytime where the light makes me feel safe -warm sunlight makes me sleepy -darkness/artificial light makes me awake. only natural sunlight can make me sleep -i try hard as shit to sleep in the night but i can't. i try turning off all my electronics. i try turning off my phone. i try closing the curtain (the streetlights keep me up). i even tell my neighbours to turn off their loud ass music. but even all that turn down, i still can't sleep even in natural darkness and silence so yeah. my body learned to be awake at night and sleep when the sun is up. even when i'm camping and have no electronics on me, i still sleep when the sun is up. i'm dead serious. i'm human and i'm a 100% NATURAL NOCTURNAL. others are nocturnal because they are on their phones or working too much. i'm nocturnal because i cannot sleep when there's no natural sunlight

i work nights and its hard for me to sleep with light. 1/8 inch this black vinyl on my windows sealed with dap liquid concrete... its like i dont have windows anymore i love it.

Ehhh... I naturally sleep during sunset and sunrise during Summer, and during Winter, I sleep fully nocturnal... naturally... Even when I tried to changed to a full diurnal, I still start falling asleep when the sunrises. Sometimes when I can't sleep, I turn on the light and then I can fall asleep. While something might be applied to the majority, it does not apply to everyone.

At one point our ancestors certainly were nocturnal. That's part of the reason human beings can choose our sleep cycles unlike many other animals.

The reason we're awake during the night is already answered in this video - 80% of prey animals are ASLEEP, making them easier to catch. Furthermore, humans also sweat precisely because it gives us an advantage to catch swift animals that overheat and tire in the hot daytimes of E. Africa where we're all from :)

I prefer to be up at night and sleep during the day. but I prefer it dark where I sleep. I think it has more to do with less people bother you at night. and if you go out to a concert or whatever by the time that you drive home you are never tired because you are always awake at that time. in addition I have less wrinkles due to not having to squint in the sunlight as much.

You should always get up when it starts to get light, sunlight gives us energy and helps regulate our body. Millions of years of evolution has made us naturally diurnal, no amount of "scientific theories" will ever change that. Sleeping during the day will cause significant complications over time. Most sleep disorders are actually caused by artificial lighting. All artificial lighting should be significantly dimmed at night and absolutely no blue light at all.

Ummmmmm..... I slowly adapted to the point where I can sleep with the lights on and even in sunlight. sometimes, the heat and sunlight can make me sleepy.

heat is energy draining for everyone. and so are large amounts of bright sunlight, "fresh" air. you know the type in nature. and the salty scent of the sea or ocean.

I literally can sleep well under any conditions. My natural rhythm, which has quickly reclaimed me after retiring, seems to be ~2 am to 10 am.

Personally I have no solid preferred schedule, i sleep when i'm tired and wake up when i naturally wake up. On general i stay up 14-20 hours and sleep 10-12. I fall asleep just as easily no matter the lighting, and my sleep is generally still deep and normal. My schedule probably leans into being nocturnal a bit more than diurnal, as my schedule rolls slower when i'm awake at night more.

Yeaaaa no... I sleep during the day 100%. The only time I see light is sunrise, when I go to sleep. This is during the summer. Also I love background noise, I always have my tv on when I go to sleep
