Anime pilgrimages changes you. I recently went to Uji and did a Hibike Euphonium pilgrimage. Then when I rewatched certain animes set in Kyoto, there were quite a few moments like "I stood on that temple stage!", "I gasped for air on that staircase!", "I've been here before!" Etc. It really enhanced the anime watching experience for sure!

I really love your channel, and the effort you put into recreating the transitions from anime to reality and vice versa. I was an animator in Italy for 30 years before becoming a RU-vidr. We don't have the passion that is put into creating anime, here it would be unthinkable to recreate real landscapes just to put them into a cartoon. This makes me adore anime and all those who produce them, and no less channels like yours which, however... is actually the only one I follow!

Man I need to go back to Japan and visit more places. On my first and only visit thus far I never really did a full pilgrimage but visited a few places each: Steins;Gate: I mean, it's Akihabara, not that hard to find everything, even met other people doing the same at the shrine. InitialD: Few locations around Shibukawa, Mt.Akina/Haruna, the lake, the vending machine and Irohazaka (man that's a wild road definitely worth a drive or 20). I really want to re-do this one and visit all the Touge featured. Higurashi: Just went around the village, sadly arrived pretty late so had to rush through there in like two hours. Tenki no ko: Interestingly before the western release and without even knowing of it, because my last AirBnB was near Tabata station. This was a super awesome feel when watching the movie and seeing the places I've just been to a few months before. I heard that the Bocchi locations were super overrun both by locals and tourists this year, so it's definitely growing. Though they're mostly creating Instagram and TikTok content so unless you're into those platforms and following the right people it's easy to miss.

Thanks for the info! I’ve always wanted to do a Higurashi pilgrimage as well. I’ve got a Steins Gate video coming in a few weeks.

@@KindaNeet The problem with Shirakawa-go is that the parking lot closes quite early so you can't really take in the evening atmosphere unless you stay the night. I also cannot recommend going there by car from Takayama and not taking the expressway. The expressway is quite expensive for the short distance but it took almost two hours on normal roads.

On my trip to Japan in 2017 I went to Hakone and visited a couple of places that reference to the anime Evangelion. It was fun, Hakone is pretty much an Eva town with lot's of Eva merch and advertising. Also one funny thing is while on the bus in Hakone, There was a military convoy (trucks, jeeps, etc) that passed by. Deep in my head I was imagining the NERV mobilizing their forces with the famous Eva background OST (not the OP or the ED song) playing while the military vehicles was passing by. And then when I went to Kyoto, I visited most of the places that the K-On! girls went when they were on aschool trip to Kyoto. really fun doing anime pilgrimages. In 2018 I went to Shirakawa-go. I didn't know it was the place where Higurashi was based until when I was walking around and started noticing the similarities from the game/anime. Tokyo is easy as there are a lot of anime and games that were based there. Shibuya for Persona 5, Chaos;Head comes first on my mind. Also in Tokyo while I was in Akihabara, I was visiting iconic places from Steins;Gate and Love Live!. I even visited Kanda Myoujin shrine and was hoping I will see shrine maiden like Nozomi, LMAO! Also not a pilgrimage but I rode the Evangelion Shinkansen that was running that year from Osaka to Fukuoka.

Woah those sounds like awesome trips! I didn’t realize there was many Eva spots you can visit, it’s my favorite anime. Any recommendations in Hakone?

@@KindaNeet It's been a while but here's what I remember. I start off in Hakone-Yumoto station, this is the station when Shinji first arrived, also when he quits being an Eva pilot only to change his mind. There's also an Eva store in there that sells a lot of Eva related merchs and others. Then I took a bus to MotoHakone port and rode a ferry across Lake Ashi, a scenic lake with a view of Mt Fuji and also a place where some battles in Eva occured. The iconic red torii gate near the lake can be seen and visited as well. I then took the Hakone Ropeway at Togendai station,a nother beautiful view of Mt Fuji. I stopped at Owakudani station to eat the black eggs as ssen on episode 4 (I think). The ropeway ends in Gora then I took a bus going to Kintoki shrine, this where one of the episode wher eToji and Ken was almost crushed by Shinji's Eva. That's basically all of the things I did. Hakone is just a small place, an overnight stay should be enough to visit those places.

I'm not huge into the idea doing anime pilgrimages for the sake of anime (like me personally going to Japan JUST to do anime pilgrimages), but I love seeing the locations in real life from the anime and there are many locations I'd like to go just because they look beautiful and unique. I really want to go to the island where Bunny Girl Senpai takes place in particular. It seems like such a nice place.

In terms of foreigners, I don’t think many realize the places in anime are real. Those few lucky enough to be in Japan, will go for a mainstream touristy place instead of committing weeb pilgrimage. Some YTbers will make an ancillary reference if they are happen to cover that certain area, but no on purpose trips like yours.

I feel like Jujutsu kaisen gets super hate for being popular but it did a decent to great job of using the look of the real life locations in a limited time...people hate it for not being perfect but im happy it shows artist dont need to limit their work like they though...anime can find a way. looking at you berserk giant battles or eden zero space fights.

I succesfully did a few anime pilgrimages on my latest trip to Japan and for all of them I just used your videos and your maps. Unironically, the pilgrimages were the things that I enjoyed the most, so thanks for vlogging and speaking about this. I think that this kind of stuff isn't popular in the West because you have to flight ~12 hrs and spend +4k bucks just for going to Japan, so there's definitely a huge barrier.

"I really don't get why anime pilgrimage isn't more popular in the west" I feel like we can come up with some quick answers to this one without much effort. It is an expensive hobby, regardless it is frustrating to learn just how niche it is. The entirety of the English speaking community is concentrated around a handful of small social media accounts. My wife, who doesn't even identify as an anime fan, has been on more anime pilgrimages than (I am confident in saying) 99,99% of fans. It just feels like an activity that 100% of fans going to Japan should do, but don't for a plethora of reasons.
@KindaNeet
@KindaNeet 8 месяцев назад
I supposed I mean why *watching* anime pilgrimage isn’t more popular exactly for the reason that not many people can do it themselves, so you’d think they’d want to experience it vicariously.

@@KindaNeet On this point, I have a small anecdote to share. Back in 2016 I put together a travelogue for a mid-sized con. I visited and presented all sorts of anime locations, there was something for every person in the crowd, but the response was simply lukewarm, to put it mildly. My non-professional opinion here is that RU-vidrs just don't see the numbers, or they don't believe this type of content can hit their targets.
