Why Aston Martin is looking at creating its own F1 engine

The commitment behind Aston Martin’s works Formula 1 team has been unquestionable during Lawrence Stroll’s ownership.
His biggest strategic decision and financial investment may be yet to come, though.
Formula 1 has a new engine era on the horizon in 2026 and all the focus has been on whether that will tempt the Volkswagen Group into committing to an F1 project.
But is another new engine manufacturer already on the grid?

Whether you like him or not, seeing Aston Martin develop its own engine thanks to Lawrence's money and engagement would be very interesting. We would have at least 5 engine manufacturers, the last time was during the 90s and some manufacturers' engines back then were real Gp2 engines compared to the Renault and Honda engines. I am looking forward to that eventuality. ✊🏻

I am an impartial fan of the sport. I pass by the Silverstone AMR construction daily, and its great to see how its evolving. I have no doubt that the team will enjoy great success from all the changes and investment that Stroll and his investors are making. There seems some plausibility in this suggestion that AMR would gain from treading its own path. But given the way in which Stroll operates, might it more probable that he gets a consortium together and simply buys Cosworth at below market value, invests greatly and in time relocates it 14 miles down the A43 to join the then operational new premises. The bigger factor is what plans he has for the road cars, currently wholly dependent on Merc/AMG sourcing. If he want to make an Aston a true iconic brand, then he needs to severe that arrangement. Can Cosworth mass produce enough road car engines to supply the AM sales growth trajectory? Is there further space at Gaydon to build a road car engine plant. Even if its across the road, and they have to push the engines on trollies to the other side via a pelican crossing? (old timers will get this reference) Time will tell - but one thing is for sure. Mr Stroll is not messing about - and this is about more than giving his son something do at weekends. - Be sure, if they are to be challenging for World Championships within 5-years, then they need a big name signing to drive it soon. We know MV is out, Lewis is out, Lando is out, Charles? George? A.N.OTHER?

We saw Arrows build their own engine, although it was essentially a Hart engine developed in house if I remember correctly, but that didn't last long. If this report is anything to go by aston probably won't have the resources to fully commit to a complete in house engine project, given how much more investment is needed for a modern f1 engine, but I could see a similar setup to what red bull have now with Honda working for Aston Martin in the long term if they get the right base power unit supply from which to develop.

I think it would be great for British business if Aston Martin and Cosworth joined forces. A move away from German brand Mercedes could be a commercial and financial boon for the British F1 team. An F1 partnership could also path the way for Cosworth to become Aston's road car engine supplier in the future but that would depend on what deal the road car division already has with Mercedes AMG. Aston's next generation of road cars will be sustainably fuelled internal combustion hybrids and having an engine partner who is prototyping hybrid technology inside an Aston F1 car would be perfect. Mercedes will always just be an engine supplier to Aston for both F1 and road so if Lawrence Stroll really wants to own a world championship winning team I think he should join forces with Cosworth or Volswagen but I would love to see Cosworth back in F1 and possibly back in road cars.

Cosworth is definitely no joke. I always thought that McLaren should team up with cosworth and make an engine for their car but any team that does it with them would be lucky because they're very good at what they do.

I have no idea if they'll come to fruition but AM seems to have a really promising future within the next 5-6 years. I just want Seb to be a part of it. I hope he doesn't follow his idol's footsteps. Michael helped a lot when they were building the team and he left before he can enjoy his work's success. I truly hope Seb stays long enough to enjoy AM's glory days, if there'll ever be one.

Aston Martin since a long time ago hasn’t got good enough engines, they have the necessity to evolve their power unit section. F1 has got high standards, a environment like that is the best to the purpose they have now.

Well it's true they're incredibly complicated, but the new regs are going to remove the by far most complicated component from the PU, so it does open up real possibilities for others to enter.

I wish the regulations would be lifted with the spending cap in place so innovation would thrive and the cars more competitive. Being the fan of a particular brand would mean alot more IMO. That is what ultimately killed NASCAR, a lack of drivers with personality and essentially spec cars.
@Ghost-hj5jy
@Ghost-hj5jy 2 года назад
The problems with lifting Regs and not the spending cap as that creates the problem with having the best personal, tech, and experience that is heavily in favor to even more than it is can win and dominate even harder. Guess who has it? The top 3 teams still and maybe Mclaren. Non of the pecking order would change and the top 3 gap to the midfield would be larger than it is.

It seems odd that the three customer teams apparently thinking about switching PU supplier are all currently using what’s probably still the best PU on the grid. Although I guess Alpha Tauri, Alfa, and Haas are all a lot more closely linked with their PU supplier than these three are to Mercedes.

Vw is a engine supplier,.. Andretti is proposing another team. Different situations and different impacts on all the other teams. The teams are now very protective of their businesses and the disribution of funds to the teams will be diluted every time a new team joins. Tho there is room for 2 more new teams.. there is no formal process ATM to submit a proposal to join the series. They will all be worth a billion each in 3-5 yrs. One reason any new team has to drop 200million just to join the club to offset the $ they will take from the others when they start earning...

Be interesting, it maybe a victim of it’s own success. Gets bigger and more competitive and then they are left with the issue of having a weak driver possibly in Stroll if he’s still there. Big investment will want high spec drivers. Mazepin wouldn’t have a seat in HASS if his Dad wasn’t the sponsor and I also think Mick Schumacher would have gone quite a bit ago too if he didn’t have that name. Constantly evolving sport.
