Chickens & compost systems are a perfect match of needs & yields. Chickens scratch, aerate, and speed up the decomposition process. Kitchen scraps and garden waste provide food for backyard chickens. With careful design, they can live together in a mutually beneficial system that will also benefit your garden!

The compost bin attached to the run is such a good idea, I may implement that. I am also in Victoria so I get the rat pressure. I've only had chickens for a few months so its possible the rats just havent discovered the chickens yet, but I have 1/2" hardware cloth around my entire 8'x16' run, and over the top, and 2 ft predator apron of hardware cloth and no rats yet. It was really tiring and expensive to install all that though, but i sleep soundly at night knowing the ladies are safe

I have a 20x 20 coop with a 40x40 run attached, use shredded cardboard for my deep litter, on a dirt floor. 3 years now, no cleaning yet. Just throw some whole wheat in now and then to get it stirred up good

Can you please explain it more. Our chicken run is getting very muddy and smell really bad. I have been adding dry leaves, wood shaving and also moved everything after couple of months later. Now with rain, poop and scratched by chicken its bad again. You said add shredded cardboard and also said whole wheat. What whole wheat will do? Thank you.

@@shahedayeasmeen8089 any kind of grain that I can get, usually spring wheat or Durham, I have friends who work at big elevator's and they are willing to get me spilled grain from when they load a train

Great video! Can you tell me why you have branches up high over your fence in stage three of your chicken lockdown.

I have a question about the trees. You're very close to the fence. Do your girls ever roost up the trees and get over the fence?
@hatchetnseed

Good question Vivian. Not with this particular breed - Bovan Browns. They do jump up onto the shorter peony bush, but have yet to fly right out and show little interest in that. In the past, I’ve had Leghorns which were very flighty and would roost way up in poplar trees. Probably not as good a breed for urban living as the Bovans.

can anyone explain to me why the coop can't just be suspended over the compost to catch their poop at night??
@hatchetnseed

It could be, but we don't necessarily want them in the compost all the time, so this is the system we have chosen. It is also made sense given the structures that were already in place that we retrofit.
