Balancing your pet’s meals doesn’t have to be down to a perfect science every day, but since you’re formulating their diet, you do need to know the essential nutrients that are necessary for their health. Are you aware of the effects of long term nutrient deficiencies?

I am one of those people who believes that every single meal does not have to be balanced. However, the diet needs to at least be balanced over a week. So, I watch all the videos on this channel so that my dogs are getting everything they need. This is the best raw feeding channel-- Very well researched information; Great graphics; Artistic camera work; Well written and articulated narration.

Couldn't agree more! However I've myself had to deconstruct some of my long held views on meat in order to better care for my own kitties, growing up in a veg family and all that but having a flexiblr diet until as of late. It wasn't hard to let curiously win over disgust, but NOTHING triumphs precaution and sanitation!!!

The reason why I love her videos is because they’re so simple to understand and visually stimulating. Was wondering if the supplements you used are for human use? We do have multivitamins for pets available here but I’m not sure if they’re as good as those from the food sources you mentioned as we all know some of those are synthetic vitamins. Anyway keep these videos coming! Still waiting for a video on feeding raw to puppies ❤️

I haven't yet found one that discusses how much of the suggested special foods to add to correct the nutrient gaps, for example, how much oyster for zinc, or sunflower seeds for Vitamin E? I understand calculating daily total of food, (however the percent body weight estimate was vastly different than the calorie calculation for me - not sure which to trust), and the 80/10/5/5 ratio, but how much kelp, etc.? We've gotten a senior cat off of kibble entirely, on to wet canned food, with gradually better ingredients, now no corn, soy, wheat, potato, or any kind of pea or bean. Caveat, I'm not put off by meat by-products as some people are. I'd rather have some meat by-products than ANY kind of pea. We are now transitioning to a raw food diet, and it is still slow going. Let's just say, she is NOT curious about new....anything. I'm more dedicated to this than is my husband, so the days I work, he feeds the canned diet. On my days off, I introduce the raw. Just trying to get her to consider the new foods, don't really worry TOO much about balancing everything yet, But I love videos like this to show me what to introduce to her on "my" days, so that when this is a bigger issue for us, it won't feel like trying to invent the wheel over again. Long intro, just to say, thank you so much for your info and all you do.

@delphinebez3045
@delphinebez3045 2 года назад
Sorry no one answered you... raw food is supposedly the best food for GI issues, unless it does not suit your animal for any reason, in which case you can switch to half cooked or baked. GI issues require a vet consult and proper investigation. Probiotics can help (on empty stomach). A teaspoon of mashed pumpkin with food is helpful with both diarrhea or its opposite... you can also give a few ml of colloidal silver, 15ppm, 3 times a day ! Soothes and cures many ailments. Just give it at different times than probiotics.

I agree, I think your channel is the best one on raw feeding. What do you think about mixed supplements? My problem is that my rescue cat does not eat much, not the canned nor the dry nor the cooked or raw. He eats very little and so I want to add Alnutrin or Nutra Thrive (both are a mix of supplements in powdered form) to the food I am giving while I transition him to a variety of foods, including bone. He is a happy guy but seems picky about all of his food and seems to eat just enough. Is there a brand you recommend instead of us buying all of these supplements individually?

I would be interested to learn how I can calculate the individual nutrient requirements for my cat. For example Zinc. I looked into the table of the FEDIAF but I did not understand how I can use this information to adjust it to my cats weight and individual health requirements. (he is diabetic and suffering from chronic pancreatitis). I dont want to use online calculators because they only give values for a heathy animal and I cant know if they are accurate. Hope you could make a video on how to calculate each nutrient requirement on the individual needs of a pet using the FEDIAF table or the NRC.

Pink salt has all the minerals mentioned (zinc, manganese, calcium & iodine) in trace amounts. (Also, Vitamins A, D & E are found together in eggs or liver). Some raw fish like herring contain thiaminase. Thiaminase prevents absorption of thiamine. I don’t feed raw thiaminase fish very often and make sure it is fed apart from their meals. If the fish is cooked, thiaminase is destroyed (eg canned sardines).

Do you just film when you have unfrozen meat available and then freeze the huge containers and afterwards take the meat small bit by bit and thaw just those bits instead the whole huge container to avoid re-freezing? I hope I'm making sense. Just wondering how you manage to make it work without re-freezing. :D

Great video! One question though - I've never heard that beef/lamb liver should only be fed at 3%. I thought the BARF diet ratios suggest 5% liver and 5% other secreting organ. So I feed 5% beef liver because that is the easiest liver to come by, and occasionally feed chicken liver. Should I reduce to 3% when feeding beef liver? Should that missing 2% be muscle meat? Or should I just aim to feed half beef liver and half chicken liver? Thanks!

@mamabear9389
@mamabear9389 3 года назад
@@PawsofPrey I do feed liver at 5 percent and have feared too much vitamin A, however I have not seen any issues in 11 years. I would think if it is too much for the dog you would see some loose stools long before vitamin A toxicity occurs. I think what is dangerous is people who feed commercial food which has synthetic vitamin A and then they feed extra liver or lots of liver treats on top of that. I have also seen issues where people feed way too much heart meat which is very high in phosphorous. Liver and organ meats are high in phosphorus.
@mamabear9389
@mamabear9389 3 года назад
@@PawsofPrey Beef liver is very high in copper and some dogs have copper storage issues. However, from what I have read beef liver is also higher in zinc than some of the other kinds of liver and I understand that the zinc helps control the absorption of copper. Nature has a way of figuring this stuff out. Many animals like wolves are chiefly single prey species and are eating liver with high amounts of copper. But definitely good to be aware of high copper and vitamin A.

where can i find the daily or weekly requirements for dogs?
@PawsofPrey
@PawsofPrey 3 года назад
NRC guidelines - they give daily dosage recommendations per 1000 kcal. So if your dog's caloric intake is around 1000 kcal, it will be easy to look at the numbers, then figure out the numbers in the food source you're feeding. You would have to adjust depending on your dog's calorie requirement if lower or higher. Or, you can consult a nutritionist! perfectlyrawsome.com and rawpetsrule.com are great

It'd be helpful if there were accurate numbers on how much to give, especially for the supplements made for humans.
@incognitomode2616

Most of these videos don’t give out exact numbers for dosage as the dosage differs based on the individual animal. There are formulas you can use to calculate what the recommended dosage for your pet is.
@PawsofPrey
@PawsofPrey 3 года назад
The dosages all depend on the pet's kcal intake and NRC guidelines. You can figure it out on your own or go through a nutritionist that can get the numbers for you/formulate meals! perfectlyrawsome.com and rawpetsrule.com are both amazing.

Feed oily fish! They are a great addition and wont cause any overdosage when fed a few times a week. The AVERAGE dosage for fish is 1oz of fish per 35lbs of body weight. If you have a very small animal, I'd give under an ounce cause 1-35lbs a pretty big range.

Man I'm honestly having a hard time trying to learn everything and budget my dogs food. I'm thinking of switching back to kibble because it has all the nutrients that the dogs needs. I'm currently feeding my dog homemade cooked meals and I'm unsure if I'm doing it right. I feed my dog everyday Chicken leg quator Egg Spinach Kale Green beans Blue berries Carrot Sometimes like 3 or 2 times a week I feed him all that with chicken liver and chicken hearts. With gizzards
@gerardop7965
@gerardop7965 3 года назад
@@FirstnameLastname-xw5pb that's not a complete balanced diet, of course the kibble seems better, synthetic supplementation. Read and research, and learn the gaps, and regarding money, I spend 4$ for 2 dogs a day, with everything, and I do 3 secreting organs, oysters and dairy. Don't focus on plants, dogs eat mainly animals, plants are for minimal requirements. Look up "the Primal pack" channel here on RU-vid.

Heres my next meal prep 4.5 ounces of the cooked protein source (dark chicken, turkey, lamb, pork, beef or eggs), 2 cups of cooked carbohydrates (rice, sweet potato, barley, peas, corn or oatmeal) 1.5 tablespoons of vegetables (carrots, bell peppers, green beans, baby spinach, squash or broccoli) 2 to 3 teaspoons of a fat source such as vegetable oil
@gerardop7965
@gerardop7965 3 года назад
@@FirstnameLastname-xw5pb why do you cook the meat? Where are the organs? Why in the hell do you give your dog rice, potatoes or any grain? They need meaty raw bones, at least 2 secreting organs, muscle meat, fat, and some plant matter, like some berries or some low carb food. You're giving your dog a S.A.D. diet(Standard American diet), and that's deficient already for humans. Where did you learn that? Ask yourself that. Also ask yourself if the nutrients that a dog needs are present in the meal You're giving. There's zero reason to cook meats, when you cook it, you create carcinogens, you deplete the nutrients and makes it harder to digest. Do not copy anyone, but go and learn a little of dog nutrition. The channel I mentioned, it gives tools to use, to be successful, but learning is needed. You're doing great by not feeding kibble, but you really have to make sure you're providing what the dog needs
