Even if it’s not your GOTY, you guys have to understand how important games like these are to the gaming industry Well deserved, thank you Larian Studios.
As a DM for over 25 years I would STRONGLY argue that 'it's not as good as a real life DM' It's MUCH better. A real life DM can't remember every single insignificant choice you've made, voice every character differently, or even scatter as much detail in a scene. D&D with friends is always fun, but for pure experience, I think BG3 beats meat space.
As a DM myself, I learned so much more about encounter design, character intricacies and creating builds from the way this game implements the D&D system. A MUST GET for any D&D fan because I became a better DM and player after playing this game.
I agree with all your points! But all my players agree that they can't go back to BG3 after playing Dnd irl. Probably a DM skill issue from the DMs you've played with.
To say nothing of accounting for random tactical decisions like using a hanging stalactite as a weapon or electrifying a puddle of water. BG3 accounts for all those in ways meatspace DMs struggle with. I say that as a meatspace DM.
I suppose this is where I learn the term, "meat space" xD I agree AND disagree. The game has limitations because it must follow a certain enough path and can't divulge or account for every wish by the players. It is a PHENOMENAL game, and has taught me a lot and given me so much to consider and think outside of my personal limitations. I am so grateful to have both, because TOGETHER...now that's perfection.
My gf and I bought the game yesterday because we really wanted to see what was so good about the game. All it took for me knowing this could be game of the year was watching her in the character creator, getting curious, and turning on my second controller. We didn’t know it had couch coop.
When i was in my 20s i played D&D every Sunday with an amazing group of friends, it was one of the best times of my life...BG3 reminds me of that time. Its truly such an incredible achievement.
Yeah, I remember there was an interview with a developer from another studio, where he marveled at the idea that Larian spent hundreds of hours of efforts to craft in detail storylines in the game where only 5% of the players will every see and experience. He said they would NEVER be allowed to do that... I think that's the difference right there...
Duh. Best game in 10 to 15 years. I have played 450 hours now and I’m excited to start again. This game is an astounding achievement and blows away the competition. Even after all these hours of playtime I know there are still things that I have not found, which is amazing because I have scoured the entire game.
@@koil3s it’s leaps and bounds better than Elden ring. Better than rdr2 but that’s a closer comparison. Witcher 3 was good but still very linear when compared to this. And the rest you listed aren’t even in the same ballpark. Yes this game is better than anything in the last 10-15 years. Hands down. Period.
I've sunk over 1400 hours and I've still come across different things I missed. This game is awesome, and well worthy of being considered the game of the year.
1400 hours is 58 full days. There is absolutely no chance your number is accurate, considering that sleep/work/school is a thing. The game came out 4 months ago on PC, and 3 months ago on PS5. The suggestion that you have spent 2 of that 3 to 4 months ONLY playing 1 game is suspect.
@@Lotoes BG3 was in Early Access for close to three years before release so I'd assume that at least a portion of that 1400 hours was spent playing before Full Release ;)
KOTOR. Neverwinter Nights. Lands of Lore. Command and Conquer. Fallout. There's a LOT of old franchises that desperately need Larian or someone like them to give them the love they deserve.
Knights of the Old Republic, older Star Wars RPG from twenty-odd years ago, it was *the* standard by which all Star Wars games failed to live up to until Fallen Order.@@mkmason4503
Played it with mods for the first time yesterday and I’m now confident in saying bg3 is not only game of the year but possibly the greatest RPG ever created
The Game Awards isn't the "One True Awards" ceremony. It's just the biggest that's put on. BG3 has already been taking Game of the Year from a lot of outlets, so it is GotY to a lot of people!
It’s no secret these award ceremonies are not a competition but more actually to the point a promotional event that awards companies and by extension games that help promote video games in popular culture. Always follow the money. Luckily enough I think this year Larian has pulled out a hat trick with all three - phenomenal game, exceptional treatment to fans, and certainly improved and promoted the gaming community. This game feels more than a game but rather a pivotal gaming event for recent history.
Went in with no expectations, and had no idea what the previous games were about. Fell deep into a rabbit hole, and am still obsessively planning new playthroughs 4 months later. What a game this turned out to be - absolutely earned this honour from GameSpot!
This game is a masterpiece. After Divinity Original Sin 1, 2, and BG3, I hope Larian Studios continues to maintain these standards. Truly the best game studio in the world imho.
Good video. It's only 2023 but I feel like BG3 has every chance of being game of the decade. The only thing stopping it is that 7 years is long enough for Larian or another studio to be inspired enough to somehow top this incredible game. Just hoping BG3 doesn't ruin the experience of other games that say they offer choice - it might have felt that way once, but not anymore.
@@tomasdelcampo2 I agree ER could bump it - esp in a popular vote - but two things knock it down a peg imo. 1. it's a brilliant, big version of earlier Souls games and 2. one you know what your doing, it's two fetch quests, getting your favourite kit and a bunch of grinding. I'm not saying it's worse, but it didn't push ARPG's as far forward as BG3 did CRPGs.
grinding? theres no grinding in ER. Theres countless side quests and lore. Elden Ring is far more ambitious in gameplay, bosses, map, enemies and many things all expect player freedom and branching narratives @@bjd3707
My only gripe with BG3 is that I used the seeming disguise spell on my entire party to try to deceive Gortash in the underwater base and he still knew who I was. I thought It would be a cool workaround to be able to infiltrate the base under a disguise and be able to keep our deal going so I can backstab him later.
Just goes to show how insane the game is that not being able to do the Iron Throne disguised is a disappointment. But, you are right... it would be cool and doesn't seem like it would be THAT hard to implement. I think everything around the Gondians in Act 3 is the least developed part of the game. I think it must have been very late development and they ran out of time. I suspect they'll flesh it out.
My only complaint is that there are no special class-based interactions when you talk to Sovereigns Spaw and Glut as a Spores Druid. You'd think they'd throw some love to the fun-guys if you're a moldy-boy.
@@whatiswhat8061 same thought I had. The disguise spl doesn't feel that fleshed out narrative wise. I just feels like a temporary race change then the npcs treat you as if nothing happened when you dispel disguise
BG3 is going to be to the 2020s what Skyrim was for the 2010s. Something that can be played over and over again with players still discovering new stuff each time.
Xbox players will be eating good when it drops. The new epilogue at the end perfectly ends the epic adventure. My first play through I dragged my feet getting to the final fight because I didn’t want it to end. Reloading that save and doing the epilogue I got that same feeling again at the camp party. I just wanted to chill there with all the cool companions and soak it in.
As someone who adores Larian studio games and don’t have a ps5 yet to experience this masterpiece, I can definitely say it’s my game of the year just by the videos I’ve seen and the music I’ve heard🤍 absolutely can’t wait to get my hands on my own copy and dive into it😍 never been this hyped for a game before
@@joshnizzle Those flaws are mostly "personal" thing. Biggest one was the last portion of Act 3, which was recently improved with Patch 5 but I haven't tried it yet. Another one was underwhelming tactician difficulty in Act 3, especialy boss fights. I hope that they will allow to enable those new boss moves from patch 5 to tactician instead of locking them behind Honor mode. Last one(not a major one but would've improved my overall experience of the game) was lack of companion interaction/activity in the camp. I wish from time to time they would change their locations, chat with each other, or siimply do something instead of just standing near their tents.
@@marcuskane1040 I understand what you’re saying. Those just seem like minor complaints to me. Especially when compared to what they managed to do with the game.
This year, man! Tears of the Kingdom took the prize early on for me. Breath of the Wild was one of my favorite games of all time, but Tears improved on every element of Breath.... But then came Baldur's Gate 3, which is just objectively God tier. And then came Mario Wonder to make me question even BG3 as my favorite game of the year! BG3 still walks away with the prize, but the fact that it was such a hard choice is extraordinary!
Could not agree more, this game feels like magic and is the most incredible experience I had with gaming ever, I could not believe how much choice there is the game, it feels like witchcracft indeed. GOTY!
As I was playing this game through three different playthroughs I found myself feeling the same I felt when I played games with NO campaign meaning that your choices for REAL matter in this game, being these games Project Zomboid, Kenshi and Minecraft.
never had played dnd or turn based games besides kotor and dragon age origins, 200 hours later BG3 is in my top 3 games of all time. its genuinely one of the best gaming experiences ive ever had
I took a year off gaming. I made up all that lost time in BG3. Hands-down, the most amazing game I've ever had the pleasure of playing. Even though I've moved on to new games. I often notice myself thinking shoot there's still stuff I can do in BG3. Game of the decade 👏🏾💪🏾
I have over 580 hours in the game since release, I'm still discovering new things on every playthrough, and I haven't even played as an origin character yet. It's absolutely absurd how much acting is in this game.
Tell me, how did I end up starting an Honour Mode campaign in the middle of a Shadowheart playthrough after I already beat the game once as Tav Sorceress and 3 times Early Acces during different patches? 500 hours and I still haven't played the Monk class, nor did I ever recruit Minthara.
@@DaDude2011 You, Sir, are a Divination Wizard. This Honour playthrough is Good Bard Dark Urge so the next logical step will be an Evil Barbarian Dark Urge with Astarion as the monk, Minthara Gloomstaker and yes... i will finally bring myself to make Shadowheart a Dark Justiciar.
No doubt no doubt. No other game this year took me back to the purity of gaming again. That constant feeling of surprise and delight over doing something you just thought of and it works/the devs thought of it, is just on a whole other level.
I was on the same boat, so I played divinity original sin 2 first (another larian studio game) and let me tell you, from a guy who mainly plays cod and nba (low attention span player) this game changed me, I love turn-based combat now, never going back to spiderman or any other game again, this game literally makes you use 100% of your brain.
I remember when GW2 devs went away from idea of choosing answers, because it would be too hard. It still saddens me. BG3 is a prove that it's possible in the CRAZIEST way.
If it wasn't for Elden Ring, BG3 would be game of the decade. Edit: Guys, please. I love BG3, I got 3 campaigns running simultaneously. But if imma marry one, it would be ER >.o
@SeelsOfElation Sure I agree with you, but I am saying this in the terms of popular sentiment. Popular sentiment ER slightly edges out BG3. And ER is not complete. ER's DLC, which usually catapult From's game, is coming. BG3 does not seem to be getting a dedicated DLC.
@@AstonMartinStig oh yeah ER is definitely the more popular one, BG3 unfortunately suffers being a much more niche genre than ER. ER’s popularity also had the great effect of people going back to the other souls games to experience them for the first time, all of which are better than ER bar DS2 & Demons imo
One big reason why I wanted BG3 to win Game of the Year and sweep all the awards is because not only do they deserve it, but I really truly sincerely hope that other companies will try to emulate at least a few of the aspects that BG3 did so well. It has the potential to be a tremendous positive impact on the industry as a whole. I want more companies to at least try to be more like Larian.
