Hey Youthman, here's a tip for those Cable Matters plugs.... to quickly tighten the fit, just hold the threaded barrel, and tap them on a solid surface, or tap on the tips with the wire cutters, or anything you can tap with..... spreads out the leaves of the plug as good as new.... and quick! Once I'm done terminating with the plugs, I usually use red and black heat shrink over the barrels... quick and easy identification in dark, tight audio racks, and insulated against shorts from contact.

audio class for dummies...Great tutorial! I spent 20 minutes trying to figure out how to distinguish my positive wire from my negative wire. (11.2 set up that has 16ft per speaker running above the ceiling. never noted that the wires are marked from the FACTORY..Thanks!

To avoid the possibility of short circuit when using the bare metal banana plugs I have always slipped some clear heat shrink sleeve over the body and the first 1/2 inch of the wire. This also acts as strain relief.

I use unlabled Acoustic Research Banana plugs on the "front" binding posts of my receiver and Bare-wire to the floor-standing speaker's spring-clips. I might go back and tin the ends of the wire with solder. Sometimes receiver will also have caps in the binding posts. But mine didn't. I've never had Bi-ampable speakers before, except for the time I had a JVC mini system that sounded decent but the CD changer kept breaking so I had to return it to the store to get it repaired twice. I left it there the second time.

my JBL Control One Pro's are connected by springclips.. would prefer if they were binding posts.. however the sound is fine through them.. however the other end is connected vis bananaplugs.. to the receiver.

@@Youthman but it makes using binding posts usable rather than using bare wire.. as the speakers can go flush up against the wall.. Yet with banana plugs it'll put tension and stress on the binding posts if the speakers are flush with the wall.

Thanks Zoltan. I have never been able to hear a difference between inexpensive and high end cables. Although it’s highly debatable, IMO, Copper is Copper. I just use 12 or 14 gauge wire from Monoprice and it works great.

No difference in sound quality. It's about aesthetics as far as I'm concerned. Overall, after having outfitted my entire 7.2 in-wall system with B-plugs at both ends, in addition to having 5 more pairs distributed first into a channel splitter, which in turn sends the essential stereo signal to any of the 5 other speaker pairs in and around my home, I ask myself a simple question: Why? It looks pretty cool, but it was rather pricey making the purchase of all the plugs, then having to purchase all the mating receptacle ends as well. Plumbing all the wire to all the regions (two pairs outside, the first to my backyard facing deck, and second to side-yard facing patio) and then ceiling mount single cone stereo in Kitchen, MBR, and final pair in garage. Lots of work. Massively confusing when something loses a wire, which banana plugs easily do. I have all 12g mid level speaker wire, which because of some lengthy distances, was deemed necessary, whereas I know 14 was more than adequate. On one hand I COMPLETELY hate banana plugs. But bare wire looks terrible unless it's painstakingly installed. When I move, I plan to leave all the speakers in the walls. But the next buyer of my home won't be pleased with the existing wall config I installed. 32 female banana jacks, plus 4 CAT6e LAN terminations. All of which will be obsolete in a matter of weeks it seems.

I love your clarification to why you use the banana-plugs. Many people seems to believe that there is benefits in sound quality or to avoid cable ends oxidization and such. As if there wouldn't be exacly the same with the transition form the cable to the connector itself. Bananaplugs might be convenient while moving around furnitures and moving speakers or comparing as you mentioned, but the sound quality won't be beneficial. I like to solder the ends and screw clamp them for a firm fit. Those metal contact plates that you bent out with the box cutter will never have the same contact surface as a soldered and screw clamped joint. But the selling argument is often that you get a better connetion with the banana plugs, and that's nonsens. You still have to make a connection from the cable to the actual connector, and from the connector into the speaker connector. Then you have two possible weak spots instead of one. I actually ordered a complete sound system today with bare wires, and the seller asked if I wanted to buy those banana plugs to "as it will be better connection to the speaker" as he claimed. But I said of course no to that offer, since it would put me down an additional cost of like 60$ equivalens. The few times it's time for moving out or moving furnitures around, I will gladly unscrew and take the extra time, knowing that I saved 60$ and also know that I wasn't that naive. Anyways, thanks for the video! I love stuff like this. And you also had a good excuse to use banana plugs, and that makes me glad to see. =)

Hell yeah! Bare wire for the win! This is why you get bit more cable than you need you can cut the end and have oxidation free cable. Or you can clean the tip with vinegard to remove oxidation.

There's plenty of purists who advise against any plugs because they indeed are additional components and material in the line there. - Myself I think it's all a load of nonsense either way. I've been in the guitar world, and even though that's different on a technical level (lo-fi instead of hi-fi, mono instead of stereo, and so on), people are way too nitpicky and up in arms about almost mythical stuff when it comes to sound quality. To me it's just mostly "on or off" and you'll notice if the signal is actually bad. A plug in between, unless faulty, isn't going to make it better or worse, no matter material (unless it's wood or something). A solid connection is important, it just needs the contact, but I've used the most basic and even "ruined" stuff, like crappy cable ends and corroded plugs, and it sounded like nothing was wrong. And I mean in hi-fi setups. But even if I'd have to go back to the guitar-stuff; In that world, people hook up many components with home-made cables and just screwed on plugs and it all doesn't really matter, let alone just 2-4 plugs on a hi-fi cable. I'm just looking into these plugs because I'm sick of dealing with stripping the ends, twisting the wires and trying to get them into the terminals properly, almost every time I want to take them out and put them in. - Just use plugs, it just makes it more neat to deal with is all. :)

I just got Sewell Deadbolt banana plugs from Amazon.ca and they are the same style as the Monster ones you have. I put a magnet to the tips and the plugs were attracted to the magnet. Should I be worried? Doesn’t this imply the tips have something in there other than copper or gold plated?

Figured I’d let you know I’ve since switched out my banana plugs and speaker wire. I have the monoprice gold ones so much. Similar to the cable matters ones. 12 ga install gear wire from amazon replacing 14ga audioquest x2 wire and the red and black bfa plugs

Unfortunately that is a really old video and at that time I had a really old camera that would not auto focus. By setting the depth of field at 2.8, it provided a really shallow depth of field, but anytime I moved the connectors close to the camera, of course it would go out of focus. I have screw type banana plug (feeding the wire inside and tighten them with screws on each opposite end and cap over to cover and close ) but I found they degrade some quality of sound and when connected bare wire to receiver, I found punchy and nice sound. I am in way upgrading my receiver to YAMAHA Aventage 70 series 2070 found it built heavy and nice compared to Marantz. Thx

spade connectors are great as well. they can be used if you have limited space behind your gear since they mount on an angle, not straight out the back of the speaker terminals like bananas.

I've never used Spades before. Seems like they would work descent for speakers but depending on how your binding posts are laid out on your receiver, they may or may not work.

i use them on my 2 channel amps you are correct the spacing has to match. i used to use bananas for everything until i got a massive power amp that couldn't fit bananas between the terminals and the rear cable management bracket on the racking.

I have a question what if you have speakers that have no banana plug speaker terminals on the back but the push button positive/negative terminals, is it possible to replace the back terminals with banana terminals if so how easy is it to replace

You could possibly but the easier thing would be to buy spades instead of banana plugs. They would work just as convenient but would be a whole lot simpler than trying to replace the terminals

You know what you could do with the Harmon... add 2 more pair of speaker cables and bi amp the towers as opposed to single wiring. The towers have 4 binding posts as well, so you would be driving the tweeters and mid-range separate from the base drivers with different amps in the Harmon. I couldn't imagine you were going to get better sound with the Harmon though. What are your thoughts on the home theater, prefer the Klipsch or the SVS?

Hi Tactical, Several years ago, I did some testing with bi-amping and did not find any difference. All of the research I have done suggests that unless you are going to bypass the internal crossover in your speaker, bi-amping won't make any difference. I have not done any direct A/B comparison between Klipsch and SVS for 2ch or for movies. I now have the SVS Towers in the living room and just setup the Klipsch RF-7 III and RC-64 III in the theater room. Today I'm going to work on a video setting up the speakers and running Audyssey. My guess is the RF-7 III and RC-64 III would easily take the win for Home Theater. Much larger tweeter, larger drivers, larger speaker cabinet, not to mention that the horns on Klipsch are brighter and more detailed than the SVS. But then again, we are comparing a $3200 pair of speakers to a $2000 pair of speakers and a $1500 center to a $700 center. I would expect the Klipsch to win being in a totally different tier as the SVS Ultra Towers. Which do you think would come out on top? Thanks for watching.

Youthman I think that when someone is used to the sound of the Klipsch horns nothing else seems as detailed. I still think you will certainly prefer the Klipsch over the SVS Ultras, no matter what amp you throw at them, but I do think the SVS Towers sound unique with movie details when turned up really loud. I certainly love my SVS Towers however when it comes to 2 Channel music playback I run a pair of KEF omni q speakers that differ in a few ways when driven with separate power amps.

Speakers have jumpers on the outside to connect the low and high speaker terminals. By removing them, you can then provide separate amplification to each speaker. Google Biwiring speakers and biamping speakers. I myself have never heard a difference with my ears.

i use solid, reasonably thick copper wire for my speakers; as opposed to stranded thin copper cable. I’ve got lots of banana plugs; but never use them for my pioneer home cinema network receiver. i think they are solid brass. i don’t like surround sound. 3D is alright. Thursday 16th March 2023. As long as your cables look fine you should be good. I had a set of Monster Cable many years ago that began turning color so I replaced it. I didn’t hear any difference but it gave me peace of mind. Good thing is cables are cheap. Don’t need “fancy” cables. I buy most of my cables from Monoprice.

i found an L type banana plug branded Nakamichi which would suit when your worry about back of speaker being close to the wall. but the disadvantage again is the L arms might come into contact.

I love the video! Very helpful and informative. I disagree with your statement saying that banana plug’s are meant for only convenience. I agree that banana plugs are convenient, but they also establish a better contact with the speakers than plain wire. My wires used to get blackened over time, but with banana plugs, no more! Just a little thing I picked up on. If there is a speaker wire principle I don’t know of, please feel free to correct me and teach me otherwise!!

It’s not that banana plugs make a better contact that bare speaker wire, it’s just that your speaker wire is oxidizing over time. If your wire is not hanging out of the AVR, it shouldn’t be oxidizing over time.

What makes a difference as long as you have a good solid connection. The only good thing about banana plug connections is the convenience of being able to unplug and plug in quickly. Wrap-around screw down terminals are just as good. Once you have your speakers connected, in reality how often are you going to be changing them out or do you have to have a quick disconnect?. A solid connection is a solid connection, continuity Remains the Same. Unless your speakers are bouncing around hard enough to cause terminal damage and wire shearing, any solid terminal connection is sufficient.

You can use any type of connectors that will work with your speakers. Some have even recommended 90° angle banana plugs. I just personally have not used them

@@Youthman that's why I was thinking spade connectors might be best when speakers are flush to the wall.. such as Height speakers, surround speakers.. The sound quality should be no different to that of bananaplugs as it's still copper on copper.

@@Youthman but you just said that was your second choice? Maybe I am misunderstanding...I just installed Fospower screwdown banana plugs on the back of my AVR last night. The two screws locked it so solid and the plugs were so tight that when you try to put them in or pull them out you have to hold the AVR with your other hand or it all moves. I stripped 3/4 of an inch so BOTH the little screws provide wire contact. My old Sewell plugs are exactly like those monsters and they got pretty loose over time.

The longer locking plugs with screws work VERY well, they are just more tedious to install since you are working with small set screws and they are MUCH longer so they do not fit in some AV cabinets.

Hey John, it doesn’t matter which side you use for positive. Just make sure it’s the same on the speaker side as it is on your AVR.

I tend to use the white stripe as my positive, but again, it could be used as the negative cable since the copper inside the jacket is the same on both sides of the speaker cable.

Hi Philip, as long as there isn't a drastic difference between the lengths, you will be fine. I wouldn't recommend 6' cables for your mains and a 30' cable for your center.

Thank you for answering my question but it was a difference between 6 feet and 30 feet it was only a difference between I 10 feet because of a rack I’m amp being done in 6300 H to a definitive technology 9080 speaker system and I have a rack to the side so naturally one cable will be going shorter or we would be going directly to the speaker right next to it next to the rack and then that would be the center Which would be approximately 6 feet and then the far side which would be somewhere around 8 to 10 feet that was the difference

Actually I’m about to order SVS speaker cables and there’s no real difference between the price of the 6 foot and the 10 footer so I’m just gonna go with the 10 foot to keep everything pretty equal the only one that will be a little bit shorter will be the center channel the rears I’m using 16 I’m sorry 14 gauge cables for the rears

Those are used if you are not going to biamp or biwire your speakers. You remove them if you biamp or biwire.

I’ve never liked the idea of the wires being folded over then pressure clamping the wires. I don’t think it’s secure enough or making the best connection. I do have some and have used them but never trusted them. I’ve just bought some locking ones like the last set in the video. I’m going to tin my wires with solder before fitting the banana plugs as the screws will have a solid wire to tighten to

The fewer parts between music and speakers the better. I use thick ass fine stranded pure copper audio cables with just bare wire that's been tinned. The posts have a side hole and it gets clamped down.

Nope, banana plugs offer no sonic benefit, they are merely a convenience to be able to easily connect and reconnect which is a necessity for my setup since I’m always swapping speakers around

I'd argue that if you can't use them because there's no space behind the speakers, you have a problem to begin with. I probably shouldn't be talking considering I put most my speakers very close to walls (by lack of choice), but surely I have a little space left over. - If you don't and really put them flush with the wall, that's not good for sound. Near them isn't already, but like right up against walls... probably even worse. - Many people even recommend at least a foot away from walls, which isn't realistic for most homes, but to give the soundwaves space that's where you should have them.

You are correct. Speakers typically perform better when moved away from the wall. Sometimes people do not have the room behind their AVR for banana plugs due to being inside a cabinet.

So when are you supposed to use the jumpers on the speaker he showed? I have Klipsch speakers on my 5.1 setup and each speaker has two connections. I always thought they were connected internally so they drive both speakers in each unit. Have I been doing it wrong?

Hi Ozzie, when you remove the external jumper, you are separating the highs from the lows for either biamping or biwiring. If you are not biamping or biwiring, leave the external jumpers in place and connect your speaker wire to only one set of the speaker terminals. Doesn’t matter if you connect to the HF or LF terminals as the jumpers connect them together.

Not really sure what biamping or biwiring is. The Klipsch speakers I'm using have two woofers and one tweeter in each speaker. I just connected the speaker wire to the black and red and called it a day. I did remove the jumper. I don't know if I was supposed to or not.

If you removed the jumper and only connected your speaker wire to the top terminals, you will not hear the woofers. If you removed the jumper and connected your speaker wire to the bottom terminal, you will only hear midrange and bass but nothing from the tweeter. My suggestion is install the jumper and connect your speaker wire to the top or bottom terminals.

I'm not sure. I've always used 12 or 14 gauge and never had an issue. I've never had a need to use 10 gauge wire. Are you running really long runs?

Nice tutorial thank you. The only problem I have is that my onkyo receiver rear surround sound connection design (which I use for my bookshelf speakers), is different. The connections are the ones that you have to strip the tip of the wires then lifting up a lever before inserting the wires in, then releasing lever for wire to remain secured. I'm positive you'd get an ideal of what I mean. The hole underneath the level is a bit small for speaker wire to pass through. In the end the naked wires are nearly touching each other for being too closed together at the entrance. I had wanted to send you picture but RU-vid doesn't have any option for that. Which connectors should I get to make things easier please. I do not even know you name for this sort of connection. Please could you give me an idea. Thank you

It sounds like your surrounds use the older spring loaded connectors. You might be able to use a spade connector but honestly bare wire is sufficient

Since I’m using a thicker ga. At super low volume I hear the towers of power even better than with the 14 I’m liking the cheaper wire and plugs a whole lot better. Seems like this is more solid overall.

I bought these banana plugs only to find out they actually do not go into the back of the receiver where you secure the speaker wires.; They are too fat. I don't get it. I also don't understand why no one ever mention such issues. In fact they did not fit either Denon receiver. Denon 1612 AVR, 5 channel. And another Denon AVR-S760H, 7 channel. I do the typical unscrew out the nut, feed the speaker wire in that slot and then screw the shit back in to hold the speaker wire in place. One big fat hassle as they really don't give you enough room to feed the wire in there. Plus cluster fuck. So I ended up sending them back to Amazon.

Hi Jorge, The camera was in perfect focus. I focused the camera on the banana plugs on the floor but because of the 2.8 Lens I'm using, it has a very shallow depth of field (google it if you aren't familiar with depth of field). Basically as you move close to the camera, the object becomes out of focus while the ones on the ground remained in focus.

Actually the video is in focus but because I was shooting at 2.8 aperture, the shallow depth of field causes closeup shots to be blurry when I move my hands towards the camera. Would love to upgrade to a camera with autofocus for video.

You will notice I was focused on the binding post but because the shot was so close and I was filming at 2.8 aperture, it’s such a shallow depth of field that the banana plugs themselves were out of focus. Again I should’ve shot at a higher aperture but back then I did not have lighting so I needed to shoot wide open to gain proper exposure

As mentioned in the video, the only benefit is convenience and time saver if you need to connect or disconnect. Banana plugs are essential for me since I love trying different speakers, receivers etc. I’m currently reviewing them three receivers and several speakers. That would be a pain without banana plugs to swap 11 speakers each time I wanted to swap receivers. Banana plugs do not sound better or worse than bare wire...simply a great convenience.

Banana plugs where used in old telephone switchboards by the millions. Low current, frequency response from 100 HZ to 3000 Hz. Voice comm. Useless for home audio.

Youthman stated clearly that his main motive for banana plugs was CONVENIENCE...which he considers invaluable. If you also compare speakers frequently like he does, you may not think it's so stupid after doing the disconnect-reconnect-repeat shuffle with naked wires over and over again. And installed properly, banana plugs are well proven to be trouble-free since their invention almost a century ago. PLUS, your ears will never discern any difference in sound quality. Been using them for years without a single problem. Yes, it took some time and added some cost...but, I was so thankful I did it the several times I needed to move my system. It's a wonderful accessory that serves a useful purpose. ツ
