If you look at global statistics, football is unchallenged at the top with about four billion fans. But another ball game has turned into a lucrative and rapidly growing export hit - responsible for billion-euro deals in broadcasting rights and sportswear: basketball. The game is expected to have more than 800 million fans around the globe.

I remember it started out as baseball for me growing up as a kid and then the Micheal Jordan phenomenon happened. You could see a commercial, ask your dad to lower the hoop go outside and practice his dunk or moves. You could shoot a 3 and pretend to be Bird, make a behind the back pass and pretend to be Magic. I think the marketing of the stars really allows you to be them for a moment and feel good, which is why you'll buy into something that further helps you pretend.

It mostly depends on where you live, but in France elementary and middle schools propose Baseball as a mandatory sport class. We played it on football field. They didn't need to dumb down the rules, what you need to grasp to play is actually simple - It's not rugby union. I bet the 188 pages are more about definitions and the run of overall league than how the game should be played. As far as the needed gear goes the minimum thing required is a bat. You only need an "armour" if there's someone behind the batter. Sure it's better if there are gloves for everyone but, if not, that's still a pleasant game to play "low cost". And that's probably why some schools propose it to their pupils. Basket is not that much simple with its rules. It's just everything happens quicker. Some rules are only there to prevent slow pacing - and if referees have to intervene it feels more seamless on your TV.
@stephanelk7930
@stephanelk7930 3 года назад
@@Thorpal It might also depend on where you live in France/or on the facilities of your school because it has never been mandatory in my schools (and from what I know of other schools around). But! We had a derivative of baseball, much simpler, called Thèque. I had it as part of one of the trimester programs at least once out of the four years of middle school (each year in september, you need to choose one program out of three or four, for example: first trimester, football, second semester, athletics and third, handball). Nice trip down memory lane :) I agree though, you just need a bat and a ball. I would never watch baseball on TV though. Basketball, on the other hand, is a fun game to watch!

Videogames is a good place to start. It's how I got into football. Currently if you have a PS4/PS5 or Xbox you can give MLB the Show a go. Once you get into the perspective of a batter/pitcher and understand on a rudimentary level what they are trying to do out there, it's very interesting. The face off between PItcher vs. Batter especially in high leverage situations is a mental (and physical) chess match that I think has no comparison in any sport, and if you understand probabilities in baseball it can be fascinating how a single pitch in a certain situation can send the probabilities of a team winning crashing to one side or the other.

The hardest part about getting interest in baseball (outside of MLB ownership, broadcast rights, etc) is the best way to experience it is in person with a friend and a crowd around you. And the only way that really lasts longer than a day with people is if they have played before and can really understand what it is they are watching. Understanding rules aside, not knowing what it feels like to stand in the box and have your legs buckle from a curveball doesn't easily translate. And the biggest issue that really can't be changed is just how terrible baseball is as a TV viewer. It's baked into how the game is played and there really isn't anything that can be done about it without it becoming a different sport. Not just pace of play, but the most effective way to play the game is absolutely the least flashy as the goal is to have defenders be as irrelevant and stand as still as possible.

It really is the ultimate team sport while still highlighting pure individual talent., Trout is genuinely one of the best to ever do it, but stars don't really win in baseball, u need a stacked team, bullpen, rotation. It's hard to market that, whereas in the NBA if you have a few good players ur team will always be pretty decent.

@@Floww23 I would say they're more understated, yes, and "classic" is relative: are they old? Sure. But do they visually represent what a team _is_ ? I'm not so sure. Also, just like legacy leagues like top tier European soccer leagues, the color palettes are often very similar and restricted (MLB uses plenty of red, white, and blue, predictably; lots of red white and blue in Premiere league as well-again predictably; lots of red, yellow, and black in the Bundesliga in Germany. As you can tell, the trend is country flags). The NBA's "shape catalogue," let's call it, is fairly consistent, with sharp lines, boldness to edges, simple shapes, but the color palette across the league is far more expansive. A "point" in baseball is scored a "run" (same in cricket). Basketball games can last up to 2.5 to 3 hours too, due to all the time-outs and stoppages in play. Sometimes, in fact many times, a very long baseball game (extra innings) can actually be thrilling and full of suspense precisely because it's gone to extra innings. Tailgating is associated more with the NFL than Major League Baseball and other top North American sports leagues. Intrinsically, you can't prove that basketball is a better game than baseball or vise versa. And baseball is VERY popular in some countries outside the US: in many Latin or Caribbean countries, and some Asian countries such as Japan and South Korea. But YES, the NBA is really tops in marketing. It's part of their tremendous success.

For me, as a spanish, what makes european football or basketball more exciting than baseball or american football is the pace. In fact, what makes me not watch NBA lots of nights or quit the game are the continuous time outs in the fourth Q quarter. But the game itself can be pretty fast and it stops if there is a foul, what usually means easy points in basketball and can mean a dangerous play in european football, so at least the stops mean something. But both in american football and baseball the game is literally meant to stop after every play. The only sport I can enjoy sometimes even with its stops is tennis. But sport is also quite cultural. Probably not many US kids would play and watch american football if their parents had 'taught' them about the sport by watching it, and probably the same happens with european football in other places.

Let's be honest: basketball is 1000x more fun to watch than baseball. That's the real reason

Football is the most famous sport because is the most simple. Obviously, the top teams play with super smart tactics, but we still always understand the games, we always know when someone plays really well or really bad. Football can easily become part of your life, to play it you literally only need a ball (sometimes not even a ball), I remember me and my friends playing improvised football in the streets of Brazil. I feel like it's very similar with Basketball, it can definitely become a lifestyle, you always know when a team or player is doing well even if you don't know much about the sport, it is very exciting and the players usually show off crazy skills during the games, I love watching NBA highlights.
@KiraDaBeastNY
@KiraDaBeastNY 3 года назад
Yeah that's about the gist of it. It's more highlight worthy than baseball- both sports are, on top of that unlike baseball you don't need a lot to play them just a ball, and some sort of goal, most people don't do it anymore in America cause hoops are everywhere but back in the day when they weren't so plentiful people would nail crates to walls for the goal.

The biggest thing holding back esports is the vogue game frequently changes.Basketball and football are basically the same game over a hundred years, with the occasional balance patch that might introduce new elements to the game. Esports went from StarCraft to DOTA to Fortnite.

This is a good video that makes a lot of good points, especially the bits about basketball superstars apparel and ease of access, but there are some things that could use a little clarification. First, baseball may have less of an international presence than basketball, but it is out there and very strong. Countries like Japan, South Korea, and the Dominican Republic are countries with great baseball leagues and strong interest in the game. Hell, there's a bill in the United States Congress called the Baseball Diplomacy Act that allows Cuban players to maintain their citizenship when they come to play baseball in the United States, which is fantastic when you consider that the U.S has imposed an embargo on Cuban businesses for decades. This has led to a fair number of very good international players coming to the MLB and becoming incredibly famous. Names like Yoenis Cespedes, Sammy Sosa, Ichiro Suzuki, and Hideki Matsui might not be as big as LeBron or Jordan, but they are very well known and beloved names in baseball. Again, not trying to drag this video down, just offering some additional information.

I really think you could do a video on Tony Parker and his post nba career. Became full owner chairman of ASVEL basketball club in Lyon and has one of the biggest markets among nba players in China due to his many Chinese partnerships. Many say he could become the next Oly,pique Lyonnais president one day.
