It looks to me that if you are obese n loose weight the way these pple did.. u have to keep up the same diet n exercise regimen for the rest of ur life ... which is impossible if u work n have other things in life you do. No one can exercise 8 hours a day and eat 1000 calories 7 days a week and maintain a life n career outside of these that.
+dot people don't plan for a long term lifestyle. In my opinion people need to own their size. I don't get how these 400+ pound contestants expect to maintain 165. etc, a lot of them look really good at 200 but once they get down into those low numbers it becomes a bit far fetched and something they can not handle. I was 265 last year now I'm 206 and I'm doing fine, cutting fat and getting stronger as the days go on. If i ever wanna drop more weight than so be it but ill def be doing it slow and steady as you mentioned.
My parents lived through the "Great Depression" ... dad in the City and mom on a farm. They never saw fat people ... ever ... until the 1970s. I was in high school and college in the 1960s-1970s and I also never saw any fat kids (or adults). I went by my old High School and it looked like half the kids were fat! I mean REALLY fat! I don't think human biology has changed in the last 30-years; I think something else has changed ... and that's probably our "food source?"

It is true that your metabolism slows when you get older, but it's not serious enough to make you go think 'oh this is pointless'. If you put your mind to it then you will lose weight.
... My guess is that you are right Tony. I'm old now and have put on about 15 pounds. A couple issues made me less active last year. however, just being more careful about what I eat and back to swimming ... well, slowly I'm dropping the weight. I have a built-in alarm system: when the weight starts to come on, I eat less. I often wonder how, say, 100 pounds can "creep up" on somebody? I mean, it doesn't happen over night. Don't people recognize when they are "putting it back on?"
+Electrology Now I agree but I'd also add that a few other things have changed... our exposure to antibiotics and environmental toxins, especially. Combined with crappy food, we do a number on our gut microbiome, and the makeup of our gut is inherited which helps explain why obesity is familial. Sorry, the gut microbiome is my own little obsession right now... largely because I took low doses of tetracyclene for acne as a teenager and in retrospect, that was not a good idea. I think it was a large part of the reason I ballooned as a teen.
... I think you are right Wildmuff. Almost no humans were "fat" for thousands of year ... but now it's the norm. I don't think is about "self control and over-eating" alone ... but, yes, medication makes a lot of sense.
Electrology Now If we were to remove all fast food, all processed food, candy and unnecessary food from every store and restaurant on the planet and only sell fruits, vegetables, fish and lean meat then EVERYBODY would lose weight. Some fast, some slow and steady, but you would most certainly lose weight. Our bodies aren't made for the processed crap we are eating. It's as simple as that.
I am so glad this is finally being discovered and published by science. As a 7 year old back in 1967 my pediatrician weighed me, went by those old "anorexick" weight charts and told my mother I was 10 pounds overweight. Starting immediately my mother forced crash diets on me, told my aunts & uncles to not feed me ice cream, cake or candy, etc when I was present & they gave it to their own children (my cousins) they were also informed to call me " fat" in Hope's I'd lose weight. Actually, just the opposite happened. At 12 I started putting myself on crash diets, making my parents "so proud" of me. I'd lose 10 to 15 lbs, as a Jr High teenager, only to gain it back during the long winter, Minnesota months, where there wasn't outdoor activity due to the cold. In the summer I would go on a stupid crash diet to lose the 10 to 15 lbs again. This crazy cycle went on until the 90's when I got fed up with it & quit. No one should live their life with an eating disorder. Shame on people who shame overweight people for their weight!! Live & let live, period!!
Did the study look at food logs of these people. He admits to stopped working out and getting a job that is a lot of sitting. If you are eating 3000+ calories and sitting all day you will gain weight.
+Tim Doty He was working out 2 hours a day just to maintain the weight. Normally that should take only half an hour every other day. Unless he had been secretly stuffing himself, I'd say it was the metabolism.

Left Hook Larry that's actually not true. The way they lost the weight is what the body became used to. So trying to eat a normal amount and workout less is not going to work if they're trying to maintain.
The body adapts to weight loss, because it doesn't need to expend as much energy to maintain the amount of fat. Dropping metabolism is natural when losing weight, it happens to everyone. The issue with the contestants in this show is that they go from a situation where they're exercising all day every day, to a situation where they don't have time for that and they lead a sedentary lifestyle. Instead of eating less to make up for the fact that they stop exercising, they eat the same amount and gain the weight back. That is the fault of the contestants for not controlling their eating.
People seem to think that once you lose the weight you can stop exercising and start eating crap and you won't gain the weight back. Thats like working overtime and getting a big paycheck after 2 weeks then quitting your job and expecting that same big paycheck. Wrong! You have to keep working and stay disciplined to keep the weight off. And calories count. I'm on a Keto diet, I dont count calories and I lose 2lbs a week average. I also work out 4 days a week, run, bike, and make sure I stay active. People also think just by walking an hour a day or taking the stairs will make them lose weight. Hell no! High intensity is the only way to do it.
Yeah, that is something that I am coming to understanding. I have lost almost 30lbs over 4 month period. I realize that junk, processed food, fast food is a thing of the past. Fruits, vegetables, lean protein, plenty of water and exercise.

No man, it's not the point. The thing is - "The Biggest Loser" is not a healthy guide to weight loss, it's a fucking TV show. A human being, either male or female, is supposed to lose 1-2 pounds of bodyweight per week, which is like one good hour of vigorous exercise (let's say HIIT) and you can also throw in an hour long walk, and that, combined with proper nutrition plan, will result in a steady weightloss. While people on "The biggest loser" are losing like what, 9000 pounds a week or some shit? While you're on the show, you spend all day, every day, from morning till the night EXERCISING. All this muscle wasting, muscle building bullshit for weeks, for months, and so on. Do you realise that becomes your body's baseline? And once you cut that shit off, and go back to working at office, what happens? They gain it all back.
But you did it the RIGHT way. Slowly, over time, and making changes one day at a time. These people’s systems go into shock. I’m no skinny mini. I had gastric bypass and mad the changes over time even before I had my surgery. I lost 150 pounds and kept it off by keeping to my program and I started to loose at 18, had surgery at 22 and I’m now 28 and keeping it off. I didn’t shock my system like they did.
I don't think we should ask how did those people gain the weight back, but rather, how did that one person maintain their weight and the others didn't? What did they do that was different to the others?
The one person who kept it off, eats vegetables, fruits,lean protein and exercises. Dessert is a RARE treat. Basically like you are supposed to eat to be healthy. But even she acknowledges that her metabolism has slowed down.
emerybayblues That wasn't the reason. They could have gone vegan and still gained that weight back. The problem is their bodies grew accustomed to that new extreme lifestyle from the biggest loser. So when they entered into normal society and wasn't working out as much their body began to regain that weight. To keep that weight off they needed to continue to work out as much as they did during the biggest loser which isn't always an option for people.

Vegan? I know plenty of chubby Vegans. you end up relying on eating mostly carbs for your energy. Protein is hard to come by except mixed in low percentages of carb meals, or high fat nuts.
yes to this, is so simple, yet so many people seems to be ignorant and don't do a little research, this guys gain all their weight because: 1.- No progress on their weight lifting, they just try to do a lot of reps per set, when you have to do go 6-8 reps but go heavy so that stimulates muscle growth. 2.- They think they should EAT LESS, when all they have to do is EAT RIGHT. 3.- They think they should train more hours, when all they need is a quality 1 hour weight lift training. 4.- They did it just for the money and the show, there was never a change in their mentality, so they will have a lot of excuses again, plus now they have the show to blame.
and I forgot to add that is not about the weight, is about your body fat %, you can have a very muscular person that weights the same as a very fat person, the difference is that the weight of the muscular comes from, muscle, water and a little fat, whilst the fat person has little muscle and a lot of fat.
Lets be honest. These people after the show continue to eat way too much. Thats the biggest reason they gain the weight back. How many of these contestants eat extremely healthy a year after the show? I doubt many.
They're not eating "healthy" while they're on the show... you should do some research about the crash diets & pills that these contestants are given... the issue is that they never learn how to live a healthy lifestyle

The problem is you are your habits...I lost 200 pounds 5 years ago..and kept every single pound off,how? I did not go on a diet..I changed my mindset and habits...this is the only thing I can think of that works,because humans are creatures of HABIT.
Michael Gaines you are absolutely right..this is the only way to maintain your weight off.So many people have difficulty in maintaining the weight because of the mindset.From my observation,people who have slim figures have this kind of mindset.They start to eat when they are really hungry(not just casually eating food to kill time),choose the right food,stop before they are too full and do light exercises everyday just to make them sweat.By this way,the metabolism are at their best and not messed up.

what you did, is what i'm doing right now. You are right, you did not go on a diet, you changed your diet. What you eat everyday is your diet, and most people believe that a "diet" is a temporary thing, when in reality you will go back to your original diet. I figured this out after loosing 30+ pounds on 5 different occasions but yet i always gained it back and then some. I had to sit down and figure out "what am i doing wrong?" It's because i never changed my diet, i merely adopted one for a little bit and then left it. Now i created a diet that will be my new and permanent diet.
+Michael Gaines I still think weight training would fix a lot of these metabolism problems. Dude's biking 3 hours a day, he's killed all the muscle in his body, if he isn't burning it off just from that. Then, you're wondering why your metabolism is so low? Lol, you have no energy expenditures in maintenance outside of exercise. If he spent 45 minutes doing weight training every day instead of 3 hours of biking, he would have had much better results.
Michael Gaines Clearly you didn't pay attention to the video and don't know what the biggest loser is. You lost 200 lbs in 5 years. Cool, that's plenty of time for your body to adapt to the change of the new lifestyle. The guy in the video and many of the contestants lost over 200 lbs in 8 months. Their bodies were forced into a sudden change without any real preparation. So it slowed their metabolism to make up for the sudden weight lose. The Biggest Loser contestants are working out for hours a day for months. Doing some really extreme exercises for people like that. Their mindset and habits were absolutely changed while on the show. It's that they were unable to maintain the rigorous exercise their bodies have gotten use to so when they stopped and worked out like normal people the weight began to come back because their metabolism never came back up. So any food they ate, no matter how healthy, was guaranteed to make them gain weight. If you were to lose that 200 lbs in less than a year you would have gained most of that back the moment you stopped the extreme exercise.
The Biggest Loser is fixed: a lot of contestants have spoken about how the weigh-ins are rigged/deceptive, they were fed very small portions and drugs (which fucks up your metabolism) and how they're brainwashed into thinking that overtraining on cardio with little nutrition is needed (fucks up your metabolism too)
Some of you here are missing the point. They are not defending fat people for not trying hard enough but indirectly highlighting that the producers of the biggest loser treated the show purely as racing competition between every contestant. So they just did whatever it took to cut down each contestants weigh, which was very unsustainable or at least way too difficult to maintain after the show. Hence, it clearly undermines having a healthy body and way of life in the long term.
I honestly think it's more than that because if you don't continue your diet even after the show or work out after the show of course you're going To gain it right back. You can't just finish the show and be like "okay I'm done" no, it doesn't work like that

But most importantly they don't know because they wasn't Learn how to adapt to this suppose to be new lifestyle change not new trend change for the moment.
Why should they? It's not like food production in general changed before, during and after these people went through the show, so while the levels of syrup and sugar in American food products are clearly a problem, it has nothing to do with this study.
Geoff: it's even less than that. I had an analysis done; I can maintain my weight on 2205 calories a day. I can gain weight at the rate of 1 pound a week by eating 2705 calories a day. 500 calories a day more. I can lose a pound a week on 1705 calories a day, 500 calories less than maintenance. Consider how much food equals 500 calories. Not much. A clif food bar is about 250 calories. Two of them a day added to my normal food would be enough to push me into a gaining cycle.
He just admitted himself that when he stopped exercising he put on weight... is anyone going to ask what his diet is like? or shall we all just blame science? I say if you've lost that amount of weight, then its in your best interest to continue and live a healthy lifestyle for good. That's the reason he's put weight back on, because he went back to old ways... the ways that made him fat in the first place. There is your science !

You guys really need to comprehend the previous sentences. It just looked like you got to the part where he said he stopped exercising and thought he stopped entirely. He didn't he kept exercising just not at the level of the biggest loser.
Ricky Williams if he stopped exercising enough to keep off the weight, then he needed to restrict his diet more to make up for it. This isn't rocket science. It's still his own damn fault.
Everyone will blame " not working out" but the proven fact is your diet is 80% of the equation. So if he is sendentary he will not regain more than about 20 lbs as long as he's eating his Maintenence amount factoring in no activity. Say you're 200 lbs and don't work out. 1lb of fat is 3500 calories. So you need to burn off that much by taking in that many less calories than you use. So let's say a week meaning a 500 Cal defficite a day. If your standard baseline needs to maintain weight are 2000 Cal you can either eat 1500 a day outright or you can eat 1750 a day so long as you're burning at least 250 cal through activity. Once you get smaller though your baseline also gets smaller so you have to adjust. These guys went back to eating normally without factoring their smaller size or lack of expenditure so naturally they got bigger.
I commend Danny for his honesty and openness and willingness to talk about these metabolic changes. It's so frustrating trying to keep the weight off. It's truly complex.
Nothing is worse than losing all the weight and then gaining it back. Ive struggled with childhood obesity and at 25 I lost 120lbs. Life was so much different, the opposite sex gave you the time of day, people treated me better.. then I gained it all back and sometimes I feel like ending it but I got hope.
alex reyes I rarely focus on numbers and focus more on my physical appearance. Now I can finally see my sharp jawline again after it was filled with nasty double chin. Also my hip no longer looking like an overflowing dough when I wear my older pants. This is only the beggining,though. I have to start all over again. Only now with a more consistent lifestyle change that I can still follow in the long run.

Once you leave the set - you're _bound_ to gain the weight back. You no longer have a sole purpose of losing weight. Family, job, and typical life stressors are reintroduced. Did you hear when he said he was working out two hours a day and biking all over town? How realistic is that for the typical person?
Someone didn't watch the video, their metabolism dropped!! By at least 430 calories so yes, in a way, my 1,800 diet would be" over eating" for their body. TBL fucked up their body.
Thank goodness! Finally, someone that understands! Rapid weightloss = tons of muscle loss. Tons of muscle loss = low metabolism. If any of these idiots on the show or after had just told them to do some weight training, they probably would have gained back the muscle they lost and returned their metabolism back to normal, so that they would keep the weight off. Losing weight is one thing, maintaining weight is another. This is the problem with the biggest loser. Muscle is good for maintaining weight and bad for losing weight.
+Alex Reyes I'm doing weight training with my weight loss and it has not failed me! More muscle and exercise will do wonders to make up for failures in dieting. I remember one weekend I went on vacation and ate really bad food. Rather than having it turn into fat, because I worked out, it turned into muscle. There are several reasons that you will want to weight train, like keeping a healthy metabolism. However, I find it's just a generally good idea to weight train while dieting for an overall greater effect. It not only helps with sustainability, but also dieting mistakes. If it were me, I'd rather do weight training than cardio, if I had a time crunch. I actually think it is that much more beneficial to weight loss. The only downside is that it doesn't make your weightloss as obvious at first, but the upside is that you won't look like a skeleton with skin hanging off of it by the time you are done. I would highly recommend doing it.
Your body does not want to suddenly drop 200 lbs. It's going to fight to put that weight back on because that's where it'd been for a long time and that's it homeostasis. The key is to slowly and with ACTUAL NUTRITION (none of this 200 cal of chicken and 10 cals of spinach for lunch bullshit.) People need to eat and eat in a way where your body is getting the nutrients it desires along with a level of activity that promotes weight loss without destroying your joints. No one wants to hear slow and steady BUT think of it this way 2 years to lose weight slowly (and WAY more happily) or 2 years to just get fatter and more miserable. YOU GOT IT!
Your body is not getting as much food as it used to, so it will slow down metabolism in order to store more food. This is known as adaptation. When you suddenly make such a drastic change to your diet, your body will respond to this as sort of an attack to its usual system. The trick here is to not suddenly change your diet, but rather in a gradual manner.
There's a definite correlation between exercising and getting complacent. He clearly stated he was working out 2 to 3 hours a day, which is known as overtraining. No one can continue their new lifestyle and maintain it through burning yourself out. Let's get this clear he said it. Not me!

I enjoy Danny's answers and seeing that he has the understanding that he HAS gotten less exercise and he HAS started a desk job, in which both assisted in his weight gain after the show. In another comment I made, one of the biggest issues is how quickly they lose these massive amounts of weight. The slower the weight loss, the healthier it is and the more likley you are to keep it off.
The science is accurate. The problem being is I assume when these people lost the weight they didn't know what they need to do to maintain it. It's not really dieting it's changing lifestyle

Alright this is a TV show and the only thing they really care about is ratings. A good friend of mine is a certified trainer and has both bachelors and masters in kinesiology. He has three clients who were formerly on the show and regained the weight. They have lost the weight again but it took 4 times longer. They have managed to keep it off. The horror stories they have about the show is why it needs to be cancelled. I knew one woman trainer in Minneapolis who had a client who weighed 620 lbs. She got him to just under 200, but it took 5 years. He experienced ups and downs but kept at it. His trainer did it with hard work, changed his eating ;pattern , and no drugs. Personally as a trainer and strength coach I find the show highlights a growing problem, but their solutions are way off.
Intermittent fasting changed my life. I could not get off the floor and get up on a chair. I was on my lower legs and arms on the chair. My kids called the fire department and they picked me up. In that embarrassing moment I decided to stop eating so much. I watched Dr. Jason Fung's videos, that changed everything. I lost 95 lbs.in 6 months. I can walk and move much better. Now I am exercising at home because they have closed all of the Senior Centers. No exercise room, trainers or group exercises.
I lost 85lbs over the course of a year. One thing I learned is that the easiest person to fool is yourself. I don't believe any of the bullshit in this video. Those who keep the weight off usually have a much better understanding of nutrition. Losing the weight is one thing... maintaining a healthy weight & lifestyle is completely different.
i was overweight once upon a time, tried lots of diets, slimming pills and teas, none of them worked, fortunately someone actually recommended agoge diet to me, never been happy with my weight loss journey
sorry to say it, but if you continue what you were doing that made you loose all that fat, you will stay healthy. the problem is these people go in there, get forced to eat right and work out, loose a tone of weight, get off the show, then just think they are cured like being fat is akin to chicken pox or something, once you've had it you'll never have it again, when thats just plain wrong, you have to keep eating right, and keep working out.

Serhat Tonbul Look at 2:10 and 4:45 because you've missed it. Their metabolism is slower than others at their same weight who DID NOT lose weight to get there. The argument is that the weight loss results in a hormonal imbalance that has to be corrected. So they need a diet to correct that, which this program oddly didn't address. I'm thinking IF or ketosis.
The other thing is, when people are at the Biggest Loser ranch, they work out for six or eight hours a day, and they have a nutritionist to measure their food, and their whole lives literally revolve around losing weight. When they go home, they have families, friends, jobs, et cetera (like Danny said), and all of a sudden, they have maybe an hour or two to work out each day, if they're lucky, and they try to eat healthy, but they're eyeballing portions, and maybe having a treat or two at a birthday party/happy hour/holiday dinner here or there, and their bodies aren't used to that, because the kind of diet and exercise regimen that they've gotten "used to" at the Biggest Loser ranch, is impossible to maintain anywhere else.
Most people in this comments section can't seem to grasp your point. To say to a former Biggest Loser contestant, "here is why you had a difficult time keeping the weight off" is an opportunity to figure out what will actually work to keep the weight off rather than an excuse to stay obese. If I was a former contestant who found myself back at 300lbs despite diet and exercise and followed to blanket advice of many of the yahoos on this page with no results I would get discouraged and quit trying. Since my early 30s I was able to keep my weight at around 170-175lbs with intense cardio. If I drifted away from the gym for too long, I would hit the dual elliptical or spin bike and the weight would fall off.This past year at 52 that stopped working. I gained 20 pounds and as per SOP I hit the gym and the scale would not move no matter how hard I worked. I stopped working out and began intermittent fasting at 24 hour periods. The weight fell off and then I returned to the gym to continue cardio. The metabolism argument isn't BS as many here are saying. However, the individual needs to realize what is going on with their body in order to find a solution. Simply saying to someone, "You're lazy" is very short sighted when considering all of the people out there who have failed repeatedly to lose weight.
Mine slowed down after I lost 100+ pounds. I have to stick to an extreme diet and workout at least 3-4 hours a day to keep the weight off. It really sucks sometimes but i don't ever want to be fat again.
After losing weight you use 100 less calories per 10 pounds lost, thats simply due to just your weight. You have to keep your calories in at the same or less than the calories out to maintain weight.
simple answer: they didn’t continue their balanced diet with food chosen and measured by nutritionists and exercising 8 hours everyday with a trainer like they were supposed to do

Show me a food and activity journal from all the people who gained hundreds of pounds AFTER the show and then maybe their statements will have more credibility. Of course I can see gaining back 20-40 pounds after Cuz they are not going to do the same level of intensity during the contest. Which is one of the key words: CONTEST. Who could lose it the fastest. But I'm not buying gaining hundreds of pounds, that's way too much. Also the fact that he got a desk a job means he has even more energy to workout after work. Everyone has time for 40mins of high intensity workouts. Put down the cell phone, pop in a DVD and do the workout! You don't even need a gym to get in awesome shape these days. Smh..
Exactly. One friend I'm helping train says he doesn't wanna workout after work he just wants to go home and watch Netflix to unwind. I told him ok watch Netflix but when you first get home change into some workout cloths first and then when you first start watching the first 45 minutes you're gonna do a circuit training workout. Once he started feeling the pay off he started dedicated it soley to a workout and noticed he was getting even better It's a shame how sometimes we have to break the brainwashing our loved ones apply to themselves
So instead of only lose weight, muscle work is very important, dont only lose weight in that short amount of time, try to gain muscles to a point where you are happy with it.... And dont rush on weight, give your Body a chance to relate to everything. in 2011 i started my journey to lose weight and 2 years later in 2013 i was down from about 320 pounds to 210 pounds and i can hold it the easy way. just with 3 workouts a week. Know what you eat, make yourself a bit smarter and invest the time for knowing, what you are eating. sorry for my bad english, not my common language.
I have lost 160# 6 years ago with diet and exercise and have kept it off, but I have to do twice as much and with fewer calories. Everyone thought I was crazy when I said my metabolism is crappy. I have worked diligently to walk my calories up and be able to decrease my exercise, but it is still more than most people do. I was running 40 mi a week and eating 1300 cals a day just to KEEP my weight off. I started weight lifting, which has been the cornerstone of increasing my metabolism. It is so true that our bodies want to hold on to this weight--but Danny is right-the numbers don't define you, and I am living proof of that. You do what you need to in order to keep it off. Some days, I won't lie, it is terribly draining. I can gain 5 lbs eating what "normal people" eat one day, and it takes 2 wks to get it off. I am so glad that with this study, people are opening their eyes a bit more and seeing that the "fat person" isn't lazy, but they really do have metabolic issues.
It's simple, weight loss isnt a question of diet or biology, It's a question of life style and changing your life style (eating habits, activities, and mindset etc) is much harder then losing weight.
I know this is old...but I lost 165 pounds 3 years before this segment came out. Dropped from 250 to around 120. It's not the exercise that counts as much as a change in the way you eat. I started out utterly addicted to junk food and sweets. Now 5 years later I can't drink a whole soda or eat a whole donut because of the sugar content. I didn't change the amount of calories I ate in a day...instead I changed the type of calories I was getting. Now all these years later I'm at 110 pounds and I can eat everything that is not nailed down right before bed, then go to bed and not have gained a pound. I'm trying to get back up to 130 as well. At the moment my BMI is only 17.4 which is under weight...a proper BMI for my body should be around 18.5. The problem with the biggest looser is the diet they put these people on during the show is completely unsustainable. They take those people and put them on a 1200 calorie a day diet which is fine if you are over weight, but it's not something you can keep up with after the weight is gone. They need to take a more holistic approach. Starving people for six months and working them near to death is not the answer. Keep them on a 2000 calorie diet but change the foods they eat....change their thinking about food. Part of the problem with being a food addict is with any other addiction you can learn to abstain, you can't live without food. In order to learn to eat differently you have to change your thoughts on food. Realize that over eating only gives temporary comfort, then find something else to comfort you when your stressed or whatever. I'm not a trained nutritionist but after loosing all the weight I have and keeping it off for more than 5 years now I'd have to say I'm more of an expert than those people on the biggest looser.
One of two things happened: 1) They went back to their old eating habits, or they didn't go to the gym as much once their schedule was rearranged even though they were eating as they were. 2) When your body starts losing weight, yes your metabolism starts slowing down, but that's why you start maintaining your metabolism and working your way back up to get it back to its previous state by slowly adding calories week by week. If you reach your goal of weight loss and start eating food out of your diet or large servings of it, of course you're gonna gain weight because you're body isn't used to it
Maybe because 95% of the people who lose weight regain it back with in 5 years...The problem is the truth: the body fights and usually wins the battle to regain the weight...watch the video
+Second Rule that's the case if your not fully commuted. I understand these guys aren't full-time athletes or muscle heads , but if u say jog like every other day and try to eat healthy, you should be okay. I can see the winners gaining say 10-20 pounds, if not a little more, that part is where biology takes effect. But when you gain over 100 pounds, that's on you .
Iv lost a lot of weight. When I started to see I was gaining it back, I worked hard again to get back to that ideal weight. Its just consistency. You can never stop. Its a life change
+mikekoz68 Wow mikekoz68 I didn't know that you were a Phd researcher in this area, or are you some dumb fuck who thinks that their intuition allows them to grasp the same knowledge on this topic that researchers who study this topic for years have by looking at the studies and the physiology of people. My guess is that you are some dumb fuck, reasoning like yours is why people think the world is flat because it seems intuitive. Leave the psychology and the dietary science to the experts aye.

I've lost a lot of weight and my metabolism slowed down. The secret for me was to stop eating processed food. When I eat healthy food I feel full for around 4-5 hours. When I eat processed food I wat to eat again in an hour or two
It's because these people thought that this whole losing weight thing was only gonna be for a few months or a year or two, therefore, after the show was done, they got hit in the face with reality, just because u lose all this weight during a short time, does NOT mean that you're gonna remain healthy the rest of your life just cause of that, you are ALWAYS gonna have to eat well and exercise in order to be healthy, and that is the real reality of this situation
He already admitted that when he stopped working out that’s when he started gaining weight. Some people have a bad habit that once you lose weight, you automatically think you are going to stay thin. You must keep your body active and watch what you eat.
This its not your fault crap is bullshit to me. im WELL over 200 lbs and its because of eating crap and not moving. ive lost over 30lbs more then once and regain NOT because of my metabolism but becase i restricted myself so far down in calories i would bindge my way back or higher then before. we have to eat a balanced diet set realistic goals and be PATIENT
While true small amounts of processed foods are inevitable, here in the UK processed is cheaper and more heavily subsidised I.e marketed directly to kids, fun day out for the family. For ten pounds you can get shed loads of cheap convenience foods, frozen pizzas, microwave meals etc which last you for four five days. Try with the same budget to get chicken breast, mincemeat, kidney beans, rice, red sauce, and frozen veg. Cannot be done. Food systems are fucked up in every country.
It's because they didn't fix their insulin resistance problem and that's what fasting does. They never talk about insulin on the show, totally missing the point of why people are fat.
Except they weren't eating their maintenance, they weren't even eating rmr calories. They were eating maximum 1200 and I bet, for the sake of scale numbers the contestants restricted even harder.
The reason these people have lower metabolism when they lose the weight is because the body believes it is starving. That is exactly what diets do, they cause the body to react to starvation, which causes lypo-genesis enzymes in the fat cells to grow and absorb fat more quickly. The body also slows down metabolism to conserve energy hoping the person finally finds more food and starts eating it. Animals bodies are genetically designed through millions of years of evolution to survive starvation, and restricting calories causes the body to go into this mode. The trick to losing weight is to eat no carbohydrates or sugar, and keep your insulin down. Eat a mostly meat diet, and this will do the trick.
You can’t “take responsibility” for your physiology. Didn’t you listen to anything the doctor said? Their metabolism has slowed down to the point that they’re always hungry, and even if they eat like a normal person, they will still gain weight. Let’s see how long you can keep your weight down when you’re always hungry and constantly have to rely on your willpower to restrict how much you eat. For most people that’s just not realistic.
@@therealtulip Hunger and cravings are different, We don't KNOW if this guy is even training anymore, we don't know if he stuck to his diet. He sure as hell isn't training as much as he should now. So of course it'd be easier to go on this program with his doctor and be like "Yeah, not my fault I gained the weight back! I just have a desk job and am probably eating doughnuts!"
I understand the ethics behind this kind of study but it would've been a little more genuine IF the study included a separate group of former contestants who actually kept the weight off and lost even more.

gzarza All they needed to do was ask for contestants who kept the weight off. You mean to tell me out of ALL the people who were contestants not a single person kept the weight off?
+Trent Timoy they chose people from a single season. the point wasnt to compare the two groups (those who kept the weight off and those who didnt) but to follow one group of contestants for six years and see what happen to them after the show. they could have lost more, maintained or gained it back. so yeah they could have searched for people who kept the weight off from another season but when 13 out of 16 people from one season get heavy again it tells you something.
gzarza yeah, it tells us that they were all prone to subjective weight gain. some people are predisposed to packing the pounds even with the best of intentions to keep it off. exercising 6 plus hour a day is not sustainable for any person. funny thing about fat cells they never forget.
see..you figured all that out without the help of the individuals who kept the weight off. pretty easy. this study isnt about everybody its about one group of people and their situation. simple as that.
Long term studies of how people who have lost significant amounts of fat and kept it off for years all show that exercise and 8 hours of sleep are key to keeping the fat off. They all did about 10, 000 - 13,000 steps per day. That is about 3 1/2 km in the morning and the same at night, which is quite doable if you don't make excuses.
This is so dumb. OVER EATING is what makes you gain the weight back. If you return to the habits you had when you were overweight , the weight will creep back on. Also other studies have shown that even complete starvation does not slow your metabolic rate down permanently. Whoever actually believes these people re gained the weight even on a healthy diet and weekly exercise is crazy. All they did was return to old habits hence why some did not gain it back.
So you didn't watch the video. They literally said your body is literally trying to gain the weight back, by slowing down your metabolism and reducing the leptin hormone that makes you feel full after eating. A lot of people don't need to exercise everyday and obsessively control their diet, and yet we are telling these people they basically need to do that forever. It is not sustainable.
This guy is fantastic, I'm from the UK and have had a weight problem all my life, and its not that I'm just greedy which I am of course, but its low self esteem and soo many different things that leads a person to be a compulsive eater, its a struggle, but again I'm trying to lose the weight I've gained back in the last few months!!!!! Starting with all sugar is to be banished from my diet, and bread, and convenience meals etc etc!!!!
that is 2.5 pounds a week, that is not hard to do at all. Just decreasing calorie intake by a little, adjusting what types of food you consume and even just walking every day will do the trick
+镜云和 it is physically, and scientifically impossible for that to happen. If you consume 1 pound of water every day for a week you will loose weight. Water has little purpose after hydration and filtering. Water has no calories and thus will not stay in your system. If you consume salt you may retain water, but that would be breaking the "just water". If you meet a person who makes this claim, not only are they lying, but you're an idiot for believing. Only water diets or "water fasting" is the fastest way to loose weight without supplements and all of that. It is dangerous so it is not recommended.
Nutritionists, personal trainers, doctors - many have criticized this show and no not the ones who are trying to sell a book or are on tv - so I'll take their word for it.
I do eat healthy and only once a day , i lost 10 kg in 2 month the last few days my weight stoped to change but im trying again to add more healthy habits

Tell them they are eating the wrong food. Stop lying for those people. Tell them to cut out the dairy products, especially meat, eggs and or milk. There are many substitutes.
Because people addicted to fried food are going to suddenly adhere to a plant-based diet... Nah, they need to start learning portion control and eating the leaner cuts of meat.
The reason they regain the weight is that their metabolic rate from all the exercise has slowed down. So after the show everything they eat turns to fat no matter how few calories they eat. Its better to not exercise like this and follow a ketogenic diet with intermittent fasting. This keeps your metabolic rate high and you dont have to exercise. The fat come off easily. Works for me. I lost loads of weight.
***** It's not fun, it's repetitive. Listen either you have big balls and you don't need to lift or you don't and if you stop lifting you'll loose muscle mass. Plus you can lift to much. Having to much muscle doesn't look good. The point I was making is that the biggest looser puts these people on the Atkins diet and it makes them work out a whopping 10 hours a day! This much exercise is not necessary for people on a plant based whole foods diet.
***** I don't have any friends. When I do bench press I do it myself and just lift the bar slowly until I get it back up. I'm not the type that puts on muscle so it's not worth it.
Lots of contestants from The Biggest Loser left the show with permanent injuries. Knee injuries was the main one. Basically from day one on the show, they had to run. The contestants knees were getting worn down, their weight was putting so much stress on the knees while running. The contestants weren't allowed to leave the show (it was in the contract). The show needed all the contestants to lose weight in order for the show to remain successful. The contestants in physical pain, were bullied off camera by the trainers. But on camera the contestants were edited to look lazy. The trainers on camera acted like they cared about the contestants. Some contestants did she TBL. But I don't know the outcome. I wouldn't be surprised if part of the reason the TBL contestants put on weight is due to recovering from injuries due to the show.
+imageaware to be honest when I learned about this way of eating I was sceptical but I was just so tired of losing and gaining. Yes it has positive impact on the animals environment but my main motivation for living this way is the fact it's easy and it works. I don't need spend countless hours counting calories, portion controlling and exhausting my self in a gym.
The reason true vegans are so disciplined is because there's a cause behind it - they're doing it because they're genuinely against using animals for human products (as well as food)... being vegan is more than just not eating meat - it's avoiding certain clothes, shampoos, makeup, etc... trying to push it onto someone who could care less about the meaning behind veganism is no better than just pushing a crash diet because in the end they will simply revert back to old habits
***** You misunderstood - I'm not saying that eating a vegan diet is difficult for *everyone* or that everyone requires a cause to follow it. These contestants aren't endurance athletes or trainers like Bob Harper or even people who eat a "normal" non-vegan diet... these are people who have an unhealthy relationship with unhealthy food. Some of them even claim it's an addiction. They're accustomed to eating these unhealthy foods (they WANT to eat these unhealthy foods) - so yes, for someone who clearly has no desire to only eat healthy food (let alone a strict vegan diet), they will need some additional motivation to stay committed. You said it yourself - "the contestants balked at vegetables" Also, the situations you mentioned like wearing a leather jacket... that would make them vegetarian. Vegan is a all-around lifestyle; not just a diet :)
People need to understand that when you decide to lose weight, you don't agree to a dietary change, but a lifestyle change. You have to eat properly, stay active, and don't go over your cals. Then, you keep that up, not for a week, or a few months, but for LIFE (or a couple years at the very least). That is how you lose the weight and keep it off. The main reason many are unsuccessful is because they lack the self control to stay consistent. That's kind of the main reason a lot of these people go on Biggest Loser to begin with. However, once that strict coach is gone, it's up to them and them alone to keep themselves healthy.
