Those first few bars are some of my favourite sounds on the planet. The notes, the performance, the sound of the piano and the room. Its gorgeous. Not perfect, but gorgeous.
The Beatles were a fake manufactured band with professionals writing their music and playing on the records. That's why the stopped touring when their music got more inventive.
Been listening to jazz since the early 80's and I never heard this recording. That's what great about music. Discovering new music that's 50 years old!
I never bought a Beatles album. I had one 45 with Hey Jude or something on it. I did buy some of the band members solo albums. I just didn’t like most of the stuff they produced as a band and thought they were much better on their solo efforts. Unlike Zeppelin of which I owned every single album, I never really thought any of them were any good on their own.
Great job david: you should listen VERY closely to the silence, just before Keith's first 5 notes. You can just hear the bells signalling the start of the show (da da da-da-da-), and Keith took them and made a beautiful song out of them, on the spot.
Thanks for telling the story of that album. I got the vinyl from a local record store back in the seventies. I was still going to school then and I remember immersing myself into the soundscapes of the Köln Concert as I was lying on my bed. I still know how in those hours this music that at the time was unknown and foreign to me revealed itself to be so captivating and meaningful. Thank you for bringing back those memories.
One day I came to school very late. I opened the door and crossed the classroom to a chair in the bottom. I still had my walkman on hears. The teacher was completely out of himself and came to me ready to punish me the hardest way he can. So, I stop him and say « Sir, I was listening Keith Jarret Köln Concert ». Then he smiles and told "in that case that’s ok". I knew he was Jazz lover as myself ;)
There is a flip side to "thought is the enemy of flow". The Beatles, especially later, recorded lots of takes. So they actually did spend a lot of time working and reworking songs. Sorry, the video sort of gives the impression they walked in the studio, recorded a take and were done with a song.
I'm going to make it as clear as I can for people. No one, (and I mean no one) is going to be perfect. The situation regarding Pattie Boyd, Eric Clapton, George Harrison happened no one really wanted this, I wish things had gone in a different direction for all of them, but this happens to real people everywhere. No one in this story is a villain, no one is victium. Life just happens.
Great story. I knew the bulk of it but to have these extra insights is illuminating. The clonk sounds in part 2b is actually the lid being banged against the piano, not the pedals. Jarrett would often do this in his concerts.
Eric only wanted her because she was married to George. Then he dragged her along, got bored, threw her away and then called her up for a few days publicity. I'm not religious, but George was and he married her and he was a huge star and member of one of the biggest and most famous bands of all time. Maybe Eric pulled her away from George because of that. Then that's also why he then used her for publicity for a few days. He also took her from her marriage to George because George probably at that time believed more in the sanctity of marriage and was a person with more compassion and a need to spread love. This story tells us that George gave Eric musical opportunity over many years. He took him in and Eric was jealous and spiteful. Let's not forget immature. Eric clearly did not see Pati as anything more than a groupie even when he spent time in their home with her and her husband. That's why after dragging her along and ditching her and then calling up out of the blue and asking her to marry him he knew she'd say yes because he mistook her love for him as nothing more than a needy wannabe. So we can and dumb to his CV because George would never have divorced her. Then he goes and makes a baby with a random woman and says something stupid about that situation and that sentient being.
Those who have devoted significant time and effort in studying the details of their history, such as the frequency of the album releases, mixed with the heavy demands of touring, movie-making, on top of the prolific music composition, have conclusively shown that it would have been _impossible_ for them to have accomplished on their own, all that they have been credited with. In reality, they wrote a small fraction of the music they performed - mostly the early, simple three chord rock & roll. Most of the studio instrumental work was done by a somewhat loosely knit group referred to as 'The Wrecking Crew', and included top notch studio players like Glenn Campbell, Bernard Purdie, Carol Kaye, and others. George Martin no doubt wrote a lot of the later and more sophisticated tunes, such as Michell, and so much more. They were a Tavistock creation above all, chosen to be at the forefront of a socially engineered social revolution. Now move along, nothing to see here.
A fascinating video! One question I have that isn’t answered is what caused Keith Jarrett and his team to release this recording, one that they thought, at the outset, would be only for themselves?
I agree with most of the comments, Case in point lennon’s song, I’m only sleeping and the story behind it. The guy has been churning out records and tours for 60 years
this reminded me of a lecture from my music history professor where she took objects from the class and put them in a piano to teach us about prepared piano pieces like from john cage. i (gently) pressured my friend into raising her hand as she’s an excellent classical pianist, and when she went up she played one of the most captivating pieces i’ve ever heard. i wish i recorded it
