Charles de Gaulle sent France's US dollar storage back to the US and asked to redeem the gold. The US complied. Other countries saw this and started asking for their gold as well. The US lost 50% of it’s gold from 1959 to 1971. In 1971 we had 12 times more dollars than there was gold for those dollars in the US. before other countries could try and redeem their gold and essentially bankrupt the US - Nixon took us off the gold standard in august. denying countries from exchanging their US dollars for the gold which the US claimed it was redeemable with. people think Nixon was a crook because he rigged votes, but his worst crime was keeping the money other countries had, giving them IOU's for that money, then denying them the ability to get their money back.

He was totally wrong in his predications after 08, and if anyone took his word seriously; they would've lost a HUGE fortune from not investing.. I do believe alot of the stuff peter says will come true eventually, but I also believe that the government will do everything in its power to prevent the inevitable from happening. So this massive doomsday that peter talks about may not even occur in our lifetime for all we know... Or in the next 30-40 years.. Or in the 70s when gold had one of its historically large run ups in history. Things happens in waves and cycles, just because gold hasn’t performed over the last decade doesnt mean if wont in the future. Heres a fun fact. If you owned a median sized family home in America in 1970 and sold it to buy gold. By 1980 you would be able to buy about 12 housed outright. When gold outperforms it outperforms big.

Nothing, it's value is entirely the price the man next to you will pay for it, It's speculative. You don't actually use gold to trade for valuable resources, that's that's we have a convenient representation for it. You can go to the bank and exchange it for gold. But it isn't like that anymore, we had it taken off gold standard and the feds create value out of thin air. The bitcoin is no different than the dollar to Peter in that way, but he does see the block chain value. My question would be why not use bitcoin if that's the case, and utilize the good effects and system of block chain and bitcoin rather than the dollar. I'm only halfway through but haven't seen him talk about this yet, maybe the gov will create one and use their own kyc centralized network digital currency

The amount of gold in your phone is ridiculously tiny, and is not a justification for why gold is worth as much as it is. There is .03 grams of gold in a phone and that much is worth almost 2$. And your phone is worthless without power which is the real valuable thing in the modern age. The majority of the value of gold is just because people think it is valuable not because it actually is useful.

Gold of course has its place. It will always have value. Its also extremely boring and doesn't evolve with the times. There are better stores of value. Peter is valiantly fighting a battle he will lose. Crypto is inevitable, digitization of money is inevitable. A lot of the things he talks about in this podcast is why crypto is flourishing and will continue to. It is unreliant on government policy, everything is transparent. I'm not the biggest proponent of Bitcoin but it is 1 of thousands of crypto. Peter has been speaking for gold and against bitcoin for years and the performance of these assets over that time is not even comparable. What he fails to realize is the younger generation doesn't care about what the older generation thinks is best. How well has the old way of doing things been working out for people now? Not very well.
